this is from the tournament website:

Open Gaz de France / Safina: « It’s unbelievable »
12 February 2005 - Nicolas VOLLAIRE

Russian Dinara Safina reaches the final of the tournament by beating Tatiana Golovin in an ecstatic semi-final. Marat Safin’s little sister seemed delighted by this new achievement.

Was this semi-final the best match of your week ?
Yes it is. We play at a good level together. In the first set, I can’t say that I was playing better than her. Maybe, but I think I was playing smarter. I was hitting winners from my wrist shots and everything was going in.

Did you think you could make it to the final?
When I came here in Paris, I hoped I could win a match. Then I won my first round and I thought I had to win another one. Then Serena retired and I said to myself: « Now I have to take my chance to go to the final, and I did it. This is unbelievable.»

Would you rather play against Petrova or Mauresmo? If I play against Petrova, it will be a Russian match with a lot of tension. But if I play against Amélie, all the public will support her. In the two cases, it will not be a wonderful match for me (laughters). Winning here would be a dream ! But I have to take it easy and not put too much pressure on myself.

I still care about Amelie and I want to see her win a big one. But, what you say is true. The FO has been hers at least twice in the last five or six years and she's fallen short. I was soooo disappointed when she lost to Serena at this last Wimbledon. She played a beautiful match. I still root for her. But, my expectations are low.

The player I am extremely annoyed with is Kim. When she lost the Wimbledon semi to Venus two years ago, I was :fiery: :fiery: I hope she does well in her come back. But, I'm still :( about that.

it was a great match to watch. Both of them oafed a little bit sometimes, but the match was pretty entertaining. French commentators and also Davis cup and Fed cup's coaches (Guy Forget and Georges Goven) were all SO confident from the beginning that amélie would won, i was thinking : oh, don't go to fast, Dina might lack experience but she isn't that easy to crush...
and, woohooo! she showed them they talked too fast! they were saying she was playing very well, and that she had a great fighting spirit.

Those idiots didn't show the ceremony :fiery: :fiery:

Fabulous win despite the absence of Masha/S. Williams, she isn't not an unworthy winner of the Paris tournament. Shares the Paris title with her broth.
Hope she'll withdraw from Antwerp, she doesn't need the points desp. and shouldn't risk an injury, is as well in the doubles final. Better off to withdraw from Antwerp.

Safina upsets Mauresmo to win Paris Open title
Sun Feb 13, 2005 4:32 PM GMT

By Eric Salliot

PARIS, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Russia's Dinara Safina upset hot local favourite Amelie Mauresmo to win the Paris Open with a 6-4 2-6 6-3 victory on Sunday.

....
"She took her chance. She was very solid. I had many chances in the first set, which I didn't convert," said Mauresmo.

"Obviously, I didn't play my best tennis but she deserves her win. I'm still weak on some technical points. My service was awful. I have to go on working."

NO TIME

Australian Open winner Marat Safin's younger sister Safina, who meets French teenager Tatiana Golovin in next week's Antwerp Open first round, said she had no time to celebrate her win.

.......
"I've called my mum in Moscow to tell her since the game was not on TV. And as Marat is at home, the whole family knows I've won," she said.

"The difference between this game and Melbourne's is the heat. In Australia, Amelie made me run a lot and I was just worn out."

.....
"Marat told me I needed to fight during the whole game. This is what I did today," said Safina.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"To win my first big match against Amelie, she's a top five player, it's unbelieveable! You cannot imagine how happy I am," said Safina whose previous combined earnings amounted to just over 608,000 dollars.

Safina avenged her 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 defeat to the world number four in their only previous meeting in the second round of the Australian Open last month.

And the 47th-ranked Russian revealed that she had gotten a ticking off from her brother after falling in Melbourne.

"He was a bit angry with me. He told me 'you don't fight'," said Safina.

"I'm going to tell him now 'see I fight!"."

....
Safina, a semi-finalist here last year who won her previous titles in lower tier events in Sopot in 2002 and Palermo in 2003, believes that pressure of being the home favourite had gotten to Mauresmo.

"I knew Amelie was feeling pressure and I said: 'I just have to go for it'," said the Russian who was competing in just her fourth final.

A defensive Mauresmo insisted: "I don't think it's mental. I feel the difference was made in the first set when I had several chances to break her. Once I lost my service early in the third set it was hard to get back."

"There's no doubt about it, she deserved to win. I just didn't have what it takes today," added Mauresmo after her fourth Paris final.

By Nicolas VOLLAIRE

Dinara Safina made it. The young Russian player defeated the great favorite Amélie Mauresmo to capture an unlikely victory in the tournament. After the match, Safina could hardly believe in her achievement. It’s Dinara in her own words.

Dinara, what is your feeling after this match ?
You can’t imagine how much I am happy ! It’s unbelievable! This was my first big final and I win against a Top 5 player like Amélie, in France and all that… This is too much. It’s the best day of my career so far and my biggest victory ever.

Did you have a plan to beat Amélie ?
Not really. Amélie was not playing so well. I know she already had the pressure in front of her home crowd and I tried to put some more on her during the game… She gave me a chance and I took it.

Were you nervous ?
I was a bit nervous but not too much. It was OK because when you are too relaxed, you loose concentration. So it’s good to be a little nervous. Except for the second set, I never let Amélie win two or three games in a row. I didn’t want to let her get out of my range. I tried to be more aggressive in the third set and push her a little bit more. I was surprised she couldn’t react so I kept pushing. And it worked…

You used your mobile phone just after the match. Who did you call ?
I called my mum in Moscow. I told her « I won ! » because she didn’t see the match. Marat was not at home but I told my mum, so everybody will know…(laughters)

What do you think of the public ?
I am sorry for the crowd that I beat Amélie. They supported her but it was OK. I mean, if she comes to play against me in Moscow, that will be the same against her. I like the crowd here because they clapped me when I was winning a point.

This victory is the best answer to your brother’s critics in Australia ?
I showed him that I can fight. In Melbourne, we argued the day he said those things about me. I know that the press put it in a different way. Now I want to tell him: “You see Marat, I fight !” (laughters)

Are you going to celebrate this title ?
No. I don’t have time for that ! I am going to Antwerp tomorrow and I have to play against Tatiana Golovin in the first round. Anyway, I will keep the money for other things… (laughters).

The 'little sister' comes of age in Paris
February 13, 2005

More commonly known as the little sister of two-time Grand Slam winner Marat Safin, Russian teenager Dinara Safina came of age yesterday when she lifted her first major title at the expense of world number four Amelie Mauresmo at the Paris Indoor Open.

The 18-year-old Safina was playing in just her fourth final after previously winning lower tier events in Sopot in 2002 and Palermo in 2003, and being runner-up in Luxembourg in 2004.

But the 48th-ranked player's 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 disposal of second seed Amelie Mauresmo of France confirmed the growing mental strength which indicates things to come.

"I've started to be strong in my mind. I feel better the last few months," explained the Muscovite, who reached a career-high 29th last April before being sidelined with back and knee injuries.

Like her former world number one brother, who lifted his first Australian title last month after losing in two finals over the past three years, Safina puts her improvement, in part, down to her new Swedish coach Lars Wahlgren.

"He's a Swede and knows my brother's coach. I was beginning not to enjoy it. He started to say 'come on, have fun!'. He's opened my eyes a little bit."

Growing up is also travelling without her mum who coached her in the past.

"It's not that I don't want her with me. We get on good," explained Safina, whose first call courtside after her victory at the Pierre de Coubertin stadium was for her mother back home in Moscow.

"I've been getting a bit older. I was travelling with my mother and she was taking care of certain things. Maybe it helps to be a bit stronger in my head to travel on my own."

That mental strength helped her avenge her 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Mauresmo in their previous meeting in the Australian Open second round last month.

"In Melbourne the conditions were different. It was so hot, I was dying in the second set," she said, adding that a ticking off from big brother also helped.

"He was a bit angry with me. He told me "you don't fight'," said Safina.

"I'm going to tell him now "see I fight!'."

Her $93 000 prizemoney might be her biggest earnings to date to add to the $608 000 dollars previously earned, but there is no time to rest.

"Celebrate, no chance!" she said.

"Tomorrow I have to go to Antwerp and my next match is against Tati Golovin."

"It's better to keep the money for other things."

As for the future, it's simple for the 2001 Wimbledon junior runner-up.

"I don't have any goals because any time I do something happens. It's just to have fun," she added.

Safina upsets Mauresmo to win Paris Open title
2005-02-13 16:31:21 GMT (Reuters)

By Eric Salliot

PARIS, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Russia's Dinara Safina upset hot local favourite Amelie Mauresmo to win the Paris Open with a 6-4 2-6 6-3 victory on Sunday.

Safina, who was beaten by the Frenchwoman in the Australian Open second round last month, took advantage of Mauresmo's weak serve to clinch her third WTA title in two hours and 19 minutes.

Second-seeded Mauresmo, a winner in Paris in 2001, has now lost three finals in the Pierre de Coubertin hall after two previous defeats by Serena Williams in 1999 and 2003.

"I've called my mum in Moscow to tell her since the game was not on TV. And as Marat is at home, the whole family knows I've won," she said.

"The difference between this game and Melbourne's is the heat. In Australia, Amelie made me run a lot and I was just worn out."

Safina, hitting baseline winners, won the first set in an hour after breaking Mauresmo's serve three times in a row.

However, the Frenchwoman took a 2-0 lead in the second set before ramming the advantage home as she broke Safina again in the fifth game, forcing the Russian to a decider.

Three forehand errors by Mauresmo gave Safina a 3-1 lead in the final set and the Russian then held serve before breaking an embittered Mauresmo again to serve for the match.

The Frenchwoman came back to 5-3 but eventually bowed out on Safina's first match point.

"Marat told me I needed to fight during the whole game. This is what I did today," said Safina.

i have a question that i hope you know the answer... I love Marat's style and he's my favourite not argentinean tennis player and i found that Dianara was Marat's sister and that she also plays tennis when I saw the last 2 points of the open and i heard someone having a closer lastname to Marat's .. my question is Why is she called SAFINA instead of SAFIN? is the gender added at any lastname in Russia?

thanks in advance for those who knows the answer... and congratz to Safina! did Marat said soimething about this news? are they close?

Yes, in Russia a feminin suffix is added to the last name. For example, Kouznetzova's dad is probably called Kouznetzov, Petrova's is Petrov and so on......

And, yes, they're pretty close. But there aren't any public statements abt Dina's win from Marat yet.

actually yes, "a" is a gender ending added to almost every Russian last name when we speak about a "female". so dinara is SafinA. You got it quite right! :wavey:
as far as I know Marat and Dinara are very close, and both he and his mom (tennis coach, as u know) used to say that Dinara is much more talented in tennis than he! So I guess he's very happy and proud of her  and that's no surprise! :)

I think I'm "Off Topic", but I have a question about this...

The surnames ended in "enko" are the exception???? example: Davydenko, Kirilenko, Shevshenko, Plushenko????

And my other question is: if the surnames ended in "sky or ski" in male form... in female form always ended in "skaya or skaia" or I'm wrong???? Example: Krasnoroutsky - Krasnoroutskaya, Linetsky - Linetskaya, Rusedski - Rusedskaia ???

Those ending with "o" are Ukranian and we're not allowed to change them. They'll frown on it (just like I frown that in Estonia they take Ivanov and Ivanova as separate surnames nowadays. Because of it, not a Russian name is the most common in that country but Estonian "Bramm" ;) ).

Safina Leans on Marat as She Seeks Success
Wed Mar 9, 2005 06:21 AM ET
By Matthew Cronin

INDIAN WELLS, CA (Reuters) - Dinara Safina doesn't have to look far for a role model as she builds her career in the tennis world.

Big brother Marat Safin is bidding to regain the world number one ranking and won the first grand slam of the year in Australia in January.

Dinara's achievements are more modest but she is leaning on Marat as she navigates her way on the WTA Tour.

"Sometimes he's a little hard, but he wants the best for me," she said in Indian Wells where she is preparing for the Pacific Life Open.

"He won't wish bad things on me. He told me I was traveling too much with my mom and when I was playing, I was looking too much at her and waiting for help. Now I'm playing alone, I'm more mature and concentrate more. That's what my mom wanted from me, too."

Safina recently ended her coaching relationship with her mother, Rausa, who not only once coached her and Marat, but a slew of other top Russian players including French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and runner-up Elena Dementieva.

The player says her relationship with her mother has improved since the split.

STUPID FIGHTS

"It was tough," she said. "We saw a lot of us each other. We lived together and worked together. She'd get uptight and we'd begin to fight about stupid things, like where I put my phone.

"It's just like any family when you spend too much time together. It's better now."

The 22-year-old Dinara enters this week's $2.1 million Pacific Life Open at a career high ranking of 29, but despite lofty ranking she has no hopes of joining the glittering Russian Fed Cup team.

"There's no chance," she said. "You have to be top 10. They can make three teams: top 10, top 20 and the rest. But also there's always arguments, 'Why does one play, why doesn't the other one play, why is she playing when I'm in better shape?' There are problems. They'll play good without me."

Play at the Pacific Life Open begins Wednesday when Kim Clijsters, the 2003 champion, makes her return to U.S. soil for the first time since the end of 2003.

Clijsters came back to three weeks ago in Antwerp after being off the tour for a year with a wrist injury.

American and top ranked Lindsay Davenport is the tournament's number one seed, followed by Amelie Mauresmo, Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and her fellow Russians Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

.......
I glanced around to the court across and saw a really tall blonde. She screamed something in Russian. I thought right away that it had to be Dinara Safina. I was correct.

I walked over to that side and she was practicing with Henin-Hardenne. I really enjoyed watching Dinara. She strikes the ball so well. :worship: My dad commented “She walks just like her brother.” I died at this, because it is true. I waited so that I could get her autograph. On the way out of the court, she said “Me or Justine?” I told her “you” and she said “Oh, really? Okay, sure.” She is such a cutie. And her English is great. :yeah: I thanked her and she smiled.

:yeah: I thanked her and she smiled.

thanks jennay  where is the rest of your report?

Sharapova left out of Russia team
Maria Sharapova has been left out of Russia's squad for the Fed Cup first-round tie against Italy later this month.

Team captain Shamil Tarpishchev went to Miami last week to try and persuade the 17-year-old to join the squad.

"I spoke to her father and we decided not to include her," said Tarpishchev. "It is a burden to play all the tournaments in a row."

The team is Ana Myskina, Dinara Safina, Elena Bovina and Elena Dementieva.

Sharapova has yet to make her Fed Cup debut and denied speculation last week suggesting she was about to switch her allegiance to the US, where she has lived since childhood

The Wimbledon champion was the subject of a row last year when French Open champion Myskina threatened to quit the Russian team if Sharapova was picked.

She was unhappy with the courtside behaviour of Sharapova's father Yuri Sharapov

Sure...especially taking into account they have some things in common. That would be quite a show in case the match doesn't go their way. Marat talking to himself, Dinara talking to her racket... They even could make a family row right on the court. ;) :p

Safina Chosen for Russia
The draw for the Italy v Russia World Group I first round tie has been made in Brindisi. Dinara Safina will make her Fed Cup debut for Russia in Saturday's first match against Francesca Schiavone. Despite being injured, Flavia Pennettta still turned up to support the hosts, who must be starting to think they have a chance against a weaker Russian team than expected.

Francesca Schiavone (ITA) v Dinara Safina (RUS)
Tathiana Garbin (ITA) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)

From Tennis-X.com newsletter:

After getting spanked in the Estoril semifinals by China's Na Li, Dinara Safina says she will be seeking out her old Russian coach who dumped her due to her lack of motivation: "Even before this tournament I was thinking of going back to my Russian coach...After the Australian Open, my Russian coach broke up with me because I wasn't listening to him. My agents offered me Lars (Wahlgren) and I said yes because I needed a coach...We are not working on what I need to improve. I need to work on my serve and my forehand and I need to work to improve but I'm not improving, I'm getting worse." You and Marat both, time to chip in for a shrink, get the family discount.
