well hopefully Demetieva will have a really, really awful serving day and will set the record for number of double faults in a set only to break her own record in the 2nd set

doubles with Daniela Hantuchova 1st round against the number 1 seed

and yea speaking of Daniela(who freakin lost today despite having 2 matchpoints :sobbing: , but she's playing betteeer) :p

"Saw many players tuning their games.. Out of anyone i saw today, Guga stands out with his beautiful game. To watch him ripping cross-court and down the line backhands from 5 feet is just amazing.
He practiced with some Spanish dude and then with Nalbandian on Grandstand. He beat Bandy 6-4, well actually he won 6-3 but at 5-3 40-30 he decided to break himself and play one more game to win 6-4.. Nalbandian was struggling a bit... I mean considering how much he was injured it is understandable.. Guga looked good but i seems to me he is struggling with some running forehands..
Ferrero looks sharp too beating Costa 6-2 or so.. he also practiced with Dent earlier and looked pretty good too.

Sharapova played with Capriati and both struggled.. they almost didn't have any rallies cause one of them would miss after 2 or 3 hits..

Donald Young showed nothing.. maybe he was just joking around but played horribly..

Safin was distracted from looking at Hantuchova on the next court..
Yuzhniy and Santoro had a good one going on for an hour or so..

and Massu is still looking untired!!!"

Safina extends family run in China
2004-09-20 09:32:12 GMT (Reuters)

BEIJING, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Russian Dinara Safina stormed into the second round of the China Open on Monday, the day after big brother Marat Safin won the men's title.

The 18-year-old Safina thrashed local favourite Yan Zi 6-3 6-2 to set up a showdown with top seed Serena Williams at the inaugural $585,000 tournament in Beijing.

Former world number one Safin broke a two-year title drought with a 7-6 7-5 victory over compatriot Mikhail Youzhny on Sunday.

Safina, dubbed "Little Red" after her brother became known as "Big Red" for his booming serve and imposing presence, has won two WTA titles, in Sopot in 2002 and in Palermo last year.

Fellow Russians Maria Sharapova, who beat Williams to win the Wimbledon title, and U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova are among the top four seeds who all received first-round byes.

In other matches, Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Japan's Saori Obata 7-5 6-2 while Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi edged past Flavia Pennetta of Italy 7-6 6-4.

Russian Tatiana Panova advanced to face Sharapova when Slovenian Tina Pisnik retired injured after dropping the first set 6-0.

my favourite russian is nadia and im starting to follow Kirilenko's performances, ive never actually seen her play but the accolades she's recieving are incredible, sadly she's suffering from a shoulder injury but she'll come to her own when she gets more match practice and gets stronger. Douchevina has a funky game and she's making great progress.

dinara lost 3-6 4-6

Molik was too good. Dina had a bit trouble coming into the match, then started playing(/serving) better and clinging on, trying her best. I can't really judge her play as I don't see her often enough, but I think she should go to the net way more as she can't rely on her baseline speed. Still alot of room to improve. She looked good though, a bit on the skinny side.

Too bad, but better luck next time!

Alicia is in form so it's not really a surprise. Dinara's main weakness is her speed and I hope she can improve it cause I believe then she'll be able to battle with the big girls.

Yep, everytime I see Dinara I wanna cut like 15 cm off her. It would definitely make her more agile. She's got the shots, but there some refining to do. On mentality, tactics and speed most definitely.
I'm not up to date with her coaching situation though, might there be a change needed? Cause she seems to have stagnated her progress on the moment. Or am I wrong?

Safin's sister smashes Sugiyama
January 4, 2005

YOUNG Russian Dinara Safina produced a powerhouse display to send defending champion Ai Sugiyama crashing out of the Uncle Tobys Hardcourt Championships on the Gold Coast today.

Safina, the baby sister of men's world No.4 Marat Safin, cruised to a 6-3 6-2 first-round win over her higher-ranked opponent.

A disappointed Sugiyama said she simply wasn't fit enough coming into the tournament but didn't believe pressure was a factor in the loss.

"It was really tough today," she said.

"I came back as the defending champion and I wanted to do well but I wasn't ready at all.

"I didn't feel that much pressure, I just didn't perform well."

Third seed Sugiyama got off to a perfect start, breaking Safina in the third game of the match before slumping to lose the next four games and the set.

The streak set the win up for Safina, who showed the same power in her serves that has taken her brother into the upper echelon of men's tennis.

About the sister-talk, I would probably not pay much attention to Dinara either if she wasn't his sister I think. Just see her as one of those bighitting russians, notice some big wins or good performances of her (that one match against Serena comes to mind). For example, I didn't notice Bovina 'till late last year.

She's a Russian, another one. And she has a strong serve, and hit the ball very hard from her baseline. I know her a little bit because we've been practising together a few times in the past, and so i know she's good, she's strong. I heard of sth abt this match. Dinara threw a ball to some Chinese fans after she lost a game. dunno why she did that. but I do not think it is polite enough to fans. I am a little bit annoyed at that.

AUSBOY posted this version

I was there and saw the Jie Zheng match and I disagree with some of whats been said

Can I say that I found a lot of the Chinese supporters quite obsessive. Their chanting after every point was over the top and aggressive and especially the amount of time they clapped when Dinara double faulted or missed and easy shot was disrespectful and wrong!

Now put yourself in Dinara's shoes, how would you feel if 99% of the crowd was cheering everytime you did a double fault or missed a groundstroke!!

Applause should be given to good play not on mistakes where Jie didnt even hit a ball!

Dinara did make a racist comment, but would seriously wanna give ur autograph to someone that had been cheering your mistakes, autographs are meant to be for fans after all!

Dinara was only recipricating after the crowd had showed her a lot of disrespect! Sure her actions werent very mature but she didnt start it, it was the crowd that made her angry and she didnt handle it appropriately but she is still a kid really.

Can I say that this wasnt the only instance where Chinese supporters acted inappropriately. At the Na Li match they were yelling very loudly after every point, and yelling very vigourously and aggressively. A few supporters also yelled out at the umpire, another stood up and pointed and abused a linesman, and the wrong one at that, and then some even had nerve to yell at Granville and call her a cheat at various stages.

The Chinese weren't the only group of supporters that upset their players opposition. I though the Serbians at Ivanovics match also were attrocious, and I think we would have seen a different result if they hadnt given Iveta such a headache (she was sitting half a metre directly in front of them!) Every change of ends they would scream and blow their horns right in her ear! The poor girl had to resort to wrapping a towel around her head and putting her head between her legs to try and block out the noise!

Quite frankly though it kudos to Safina for really gutsing out the win in front of an appalling crowd that was 99% against her and clapping all her errors and double faults, she showed she has enormous fight and strength. She did what Granville and Benesova werent able to do!

Well... Dinara wanted this match BAD, and so did Jie... that makes for a very feiry contest. First of all... Dinara is very bitter and not a good sportsperson. The rallies during this match followed the same pattern throughout. Jie Zheng blasting the ball at the lines and scampering about energeticly; and Dinara applying much more topspin to the ball and defending stubbornly. This match looked a little strange because the only thing Dinara did stronger then Jie Zheng was serve! Otherwise Zheng was hitting significantly flatter and going for more. Dinara cunningly calls for an injury time out when Zheng is leading 5-4 in the 1st set.... after receiving treatment to her leg... Dinara comes back onto the court retreiving as good as i have ever seen (Ala. Coetzer) ... it looked like a complete fabrication to me. Anyway... by the 3rd set Zheng's unforced errors were racking up and there were some very intense rallies.
Zheng puts a serve in which appears to be an ace... Jie walks have way to the net as if to question it... but suddenly Dinara cuts in before Zheng can talk "CAN'T YOU SEE IT?!" "ITS OUT!" "RIGHT THERE!" ......The passive Chinese girl looks a little stunned and takes a few steps back without saying anything, she just looked a little shocked. Dinara had an evil glare on her face.
Dinara had the break in the second set and held on to win... but even then Dinara was not finished.... Dinara turned around after Zheng held her serve late in the 3rd set and threw a ball into the chinese crowd. Some members of the crowd replied "Come and find the ball Dinara!!"
A good match overall... it would have been better if Dinara grew up though.

i was at this match as well and i think dinara is disgusting, not only did she do all those things you said, but she was also making the devil sign to the chinese supporters, and said 'this is not a war, can i get just a little bit of respect here'. i really dont know what her problem was, they were just being normal, nothing unusual. but the worst was yet to come, after she won the match, a few little chinese kids came up to her for an autograph and she said 'i no sign for chinese!' and just walked away. i couldnt believe my eyes. i will never cheer for her because of this behaviour now. ill talk about this more but i gotta go now 2 day 2, running late

Aurora

well, that first account definitely puts things in a different light, thanks Kiara for digging that up! I was already getting nervous about it. Okay, if she did make devil signs and said 'I don't sign for chinese' to little kids, that wasn't nice or appropriate even if part of the public was hostile. I do hope someone from her entourage (if she doesn't realise it herself already) will make it very clear her that's no good behaviour, especially as a public figure.

and yes, the comments on WTAworld are going completely overboard again
I wonder if this match was televised in China or Russia. One would hope not.

thanks so much Kiara. there was no coverage of that match in China. I just heard it from a post which is writen by a fan who is on the court then. I am glad to learn different angles on this match.
I have to admit that tennis in China has not been so popular as it in Europe and Australia. we have to improve a lot on many aspects. our fans have to learn to be more polite and show more respect to other players. all in all, we have a long way to go.
but all the above are not the excuses that Dinara refused to sign even threw the ball to the fans. I could understand her but I never support that behavior.

I also remembered sth happened in China open last year. one of my friends asked a sign from Dinara then. but she refused cos she said that she hurryed with sth. I did believe her though my friend and I were a little bit disappointed. but now... I don't know what should I think abt it.

PennyThePenguin wathed the match and made a report. She couldn't post it (school doesn't wait ;) ) so here it is: (and thanks dude! )

well, i watched the match live.

the scoreline really doens't reflect the amount of work the girls had to do because there were a lot of long games and long points.

never really watched dina play before, so i was impressed today. she hits really well and started really strong...great rallies, really great shotmaking too and she controlled the first set. and took a double break.

towards the end of the set... momo started waking up so it became tougher, but dina held on to take the set.

then 2nd set.... temperature started rising...and so did dina's UEs. but... she still played well, went for the shots but too many errors unfortunately. then she started to collapse.... and lost the set.

they were offered to option to take a 10 minute break after the 2nd set, but dina chose not to take it and took a toilet break instead. got bagelled int he third....was kinda out of sorts... skying lots of shots....UEs..... was pretty pissed with herself too. ranting in russian to herself... waving the racquet around. actng EXACTLY like marat...yep..they're DEFINITELY related.

to sum up the match..."it wasn't about amelie mauresmo, it was about dinara safina..." she controlled the match pretty much.....all the way until the mental collapse. i think it's got sth to do with her endurance level as well. skill wise, she's up there with the best...but she lacks match endurance.....

but...it was a great match to watch...... and i think the crowd loved it..... stadium was packed... and well..she did give momo a scare ;)

June, i didn't watch that match either. But from some report of our countrymen in Australia who watched the match, Dinara did give me a negative impression. I never care about her winning or losing, coz i am not a safin fan like you.

Now Thanks Kiara for your report letting me know more about it. I, like June, have to admit many of our fans don't watch tennis for long years, especially the live matches, which explains some of them don't know how to "cheer right" for our country players. i don't know much about Dinara, does her emotion easily up and down like her brother's? coz i saw she threw racquet many times in the former matches. I will consider her throwing ball to Chinese fans as a inmature behavior, and let it passed. But Dinara needs to adapt different situation of matches, and this behavior not only give the bad impression to us, but also didn't benefit her any more in the future.

Anyway, that's my opponion. And good luck to hippo today.

thanks for showing your opinion, nova. :worship:
frankly, I am really a little bit in a dilemma though I know Dinara is Dinara while Marat is Marat. I do hope the girl could be more mature. anyway, she is Marat's sister. I don't want to know her behavior like that again.
now, let all pass.

 i watched her match today. To be frankly, i never cared her match before, but now i started to watch her match  Her performance is quite stunning, especially in the 1st set. and i do believe if maturing up, she can achieve more in the future, as such a potential one. ;)

Safin tells sister she missed the train

Dinara Safina felt all sorts of heat yesterday. First, there was the burden that builds when all 14 Russian women entered in this grand slam had won through to round two; an impressive statistic but one that meant someone, sometime, had to lose.

Then there was Amelie Mauresmo, the world No. 2, and the opponent trying to make her the first one to go.

Finally, there was her big brother, Marat Safin, who saw most of the match from his hotel and saw "another train" of opportunity pass Safina by and spent most of his post-match conference telling her just that.

The 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 score sheet suggested Mauresmo was unsettled by Safina on her way to the third round, but there were things it could not say.

A sluggish start became something more authoritative for the second seed by the end of a dropped first set, and she conceded just one game for the rest of the match.

"I put pressure," her opponent later lamented, "but not enough. Not every ball."

Still, Safina felt some satisfaction at how far she made Mauresmo stretch. It was the 18-year-old who got the game going yesterday, hunching her shoulders over baseline balls and smacking them ferociously at her French opponent, who looked troubled but was probably making wiser use of her energy.

Where Mauresmo steadied, Safina's exertion exhausted her. She had barely enough energy to clench her fist as she secured the first set 6-2. Her on-court personality is not as overt as her brother's, but it was only after she started to looked tired that her shots appeared a bit sleepy, too.

She is starting to learn, she said later, that what she holds back on, and hides from her opponents, might be as important as what she tries to show them. "I have to have a good serve, and a forehand, because I missed a lot of shots with my forehand," Safina said. " I was taking too much risk with the backhand, for sure. I have to learn to play baseline and to play baseline for three hours."

Easy wins for Serena Williams and Jarkko Nieminem on Vodafone Arena meant Safin did not have to wait long to get on the same court on which Safina was beaten, and he made such simple work of Bohdan Ulihrach that he could spend more post-match time assessing his sister's performance than his own.

Having reeled off his own (numerous) teenage achievements - "basically, I'm having a pretty decent career" - Safin said it was time Safina started thinking for herself, finding some character and learning to scratch and fight like the other Russian girls.

There will be no lessons taught in a mixed doubles team; the time for family charity, said Safin, was up. "She has to grow up, you know, be a little responsible for the things that she is doing and the decisions she is making," he said.

"For some reason she cannot make any decisions, she needs somebody to explain everything. She is a little bit young and I know everybody is saying to her, she has a big future in front of her.

"She's my sister. It's just a little bit sad to see, to sit back and watch this train pass. She has to run away when I told her already: 'Take this train, you know, like before it's gonna be too late.'

"But I'm sorry, if you don't really understand yourself what's going on, it's a little bit difficult for somebody to fix it and explain it. Nobody can tell her what to do, she has to decide for herself. It's my duty to help her, but if she doesn't want to listen . . ."

No offense but this is a bad loss for sprem, but then again considering how she has played since montreal 2004 i dont know if its that bad. She has sucked ass for months, and i can see her dropping to 30-40 in the rankings at least. I mean dinara and sprem are both big hitters who have the same type of game, but sprem has the better groundstrokes, movement and even serve (she should be winning these type of matches :()

seriously...you're right it's concerning...this is her what 4th first round loss this year?

joeb_uk
02-08-2005, 06:12 PM
It all started happening when the issues about her and dokics coach started, then she just started sucking ass. But she has had these 1st round losses:
STOSUR, SAMANTHA AUS (Although considering how well she did, its not that bad of a loss as it first seemed)
SCHNYDER, PATTY SUI (Patty is a better player than her, more talented so this was an expected result)

Then she had a good run in the AO losing to davenport, which is surprising as in 2004 it was her grandslam results which hugely let her down.

And now a loss to dinara, which she should be winning really.

Safina : ę Marat and IÖ Ľ

By Nicolas VOLLAIRE

Still engaged in both singles and doubles competitions, Dinara Safina is doing well in this 13th Open Gaz de France. But the young and talented Russian is also Marat Safinís little sister and she has to deal with this comparison everyday.

Your brother made tough comments about you at the Australian Open. Did it bother you ?
Just a little bitÖ(laughters) We have had some private problems before that and he told me that he didnít really mean what he said. It was a misunderstanding. He said something one way and the medias understood it another way. But, you know, Iím used to it. Itís MaratÖ

Why didnít you go to Moscow to celebrate Maratís victory with your family ?
Because I came back from Australia before him and I had to go to Monte Carlo for a few days. I am an official resident here and I have to be there a specific number of days in the year to make it legal.

How hard is it to live in the shadow of your brother ?
It is very difficult because a lot of people expect of me. They want me to be as good as my brother, but I am not ! He is much better than me. Even if I am younger, time is going fast and I have a lot of pressure on me because I am Marat Safinís sister. I would love to play as well as him but itís more difficult for me.

Your brother has a strong personality. Itís not very frequent in the world of tennisÖ
He is not crazy like many people think. He has changed a little bit now but he still has his character. He is a lot of fun and I think people like that. If I was a tennis fan coming to watch a game, I would get bored if no one was showing emotions or joy or excitement or angriness. People love Marat when he breaks his rackets. Nobody does it like he does (laughters)! That is part of the show.

What do you have in common with Marat ?
Many people think that we donít look like each other. And itís true that we are not exactly the same physically. Speaking for the character, we look a lot like each other. For exemple we react the same when we lose: no one can talk to us for two or three hours. My father was like that. Marat and me are the sameÖ

Do you get along well with him ?
It depends on what we are talking about. If we speak about tennis, it always finishes with a fight. But we are very close to each other and everytime we play in the same tournament we eat together every night. Well, at least we tryÖ Marat is so busy sometimesÖ (laughters)
