I watched the first 2 sets on BBC and Dinara had made 56 UEs by the end of the match, she had many many BP's she couldn't take advantage of, and the 2 of them continued this strenuous huge - hitting baseline game, Dinara never coming into the the net even though she has great net skills from all the doubles she plays. Instead she was attempting drop shots from the baseline (?) which didn't work, and hitting a lot of shots long. Both girls had many bp's against them and lost serve many times...I couldn't see any game plan from either other than bash the ball. It was an ugly match to watch but she will learn fromn it ...I hope. no wonder she was crying at the end...all that ball hitting for over 3 hours must have been exhausting and the whole match frusrating for her.

Safina is no one's weak sister now
By Jim Thomas, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 07/23/2008 11:06:32 PM PDT

Dinara Safina is no longer best known as former No. 1 men's player Marat Safin's precocious little sister. And she's no longer just another in a long line of promising young Russian tennis players.
Not after winning the German Open in May and then reaching the French Open final in June.

No, at the tender age of 22, the powerful 5-foot-11, 155-pound Safina is establishing her own identity. She needs no association, either brotherly or nationally, to earn recognition on the WTA, where she stands on her own as an emotional and aggressive force whose best tennis is ahead of her.

"The French was very big (for my confidence)," Safina said Wednesday after disposing of China's Shuai Peng, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round of the East West Bank Classic at Home Depot Center in Carson.
"I always feel I can do better, and then finally in Germany and at the French the results are big. It just proved to me what I can do when I play well."

Safina's best results came on Europe's clay, but she clearly is comfortable on the hardcourts that are the staple of the U.S. summer circuit.

In her first match after Wimbledon, she was relatively sharp and used her strong groundstrokes to overpower Peng whenever she needed to. She also displayed the athleticism that serves her well on clay and the feisty competitiveness that makes her future so exciting.

"She's not an easy opener after my vacation," said Safina, who is fourth-seeded in Carson and ninth-ranked in the world. "I think I played a pretty solid match, so I'm pretty happy.

"I have my best success on clay, but I like the hardcourts. You have to be a little more aggressive, take the ball a little sooner. I enjoy that."

Starting with this week's stay in Carson, where the road to a semifinal match against top seed Jelena Jankovic appears wide open, this promises to be an eventful summer for the still-improving Safina. She's 29-13 in 2008 and holds victories over the likes of Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova going into her first-ever Olympic appearance next month in Beijing.

Although she's a fighter on the court, she refuses to admit she carries lofty goals into the rest of the summer, including the U.S. Open.

"I just want to be healthy," she said, "then let's see how far I can get. I do take it one match at a time. There is no easy opener. You must be ready."

She is, course, excited about the Beijing Games.

"It is my first time, so I hope to do well," she said. "I'm not sure yet if I will go to the opening ceremonies because we play two days later, but if everyone says `let's go, let's go,' then of course I will go."

And if she doesn't follow up her French Open breakthrough with more semifinal or final appearances or a gold medal this summer? She will not be crushed.

"What can you do," she said, smiling.

Her breakthrough season has led to at least one change in her attitude, though. Next year, Safina will play with her brother in a mixed doubles event at the 2009 Hopman Cup.

"Dinara didn't feel really worthy at the time to play with her brother," tournament director Paul McNamee said recently. "She holds him in such high regard.

"But for the first time she feels as if she's worthy to play with her brother and why not? She reached the final of a major this year and is in the top 10 singles players in the world now."

Safina smiled when asked how exciting it was to play alongside her more famous brother, who at 28 is trying to regain his once-dominating form.

"Of course it is exciting," she said. "I hope we don't fight. Always he is not happy with my game."

That can't be true anymore. After all, it is Safina who is the current top-10 player in the family.

Good article!! :)

FROM THE EAST WEST BANK CLASSIC IN CARSON, CA - Has anyone ever seen Dinara Safina play perfectly?

Sure, she’s played some great matches over her career, most notably at Roland Garros at Berlin and Roland Garros just a few months ago. Bur flat out zoning from the first toss, where even a competent, strong, ambitious teenager with weapons like Victoria Azarenka had no chance?

At least in the U.S., Marat’s better sibling half has never been more impressive and tore apart Azarenka 6-3 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
“It was a perfect match,” said Safina, who is looking for her first title on US soil. “I have nothing bad to say. My coach said it was the best match I ever played.”

When pressed, the 22-year-old Safina threw in her fond memories of ’08 Berlin (her only Tier I title) and Roland Garros, where her heroic comebacks over Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva are still etched in fan’s memories.

Safina wins WTA Los Angeles tennis title

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Fourth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina won the 600,000-dollar WTA Tour hardcourt tournament here Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Italian Flavia Pennetta.

Safina, ranked ninth in the world, captured the seventh title of her career and her second of 2008, after her victory in Berlin.
Since winning that trophy in May, Safina - younger sister of Marat Safin - had reached the final of the French Open and the grasscourt event at S'Hertogenbosch.

The 22-year-old reached the final here with a semi-final win over over top seed and world No. 2 Jelena Jankovic - ending Jankovic's hopes of capturing the world number one ranking from compatriot Ana Ivanovic this week.
(I didn't know that :p)

Pennetta, 26, arrived with two titles to her credit in 2008, but she was playing in her first final at the more prestigious Tier 2 level.
The Italian, who fell to 0-4 against Safina, started strong, but when she dropped her serve in the eighth game of the opening set it signalled the onset of service struggles that she couldn't overcome.

Pennetta immediately broke back, but dropped her serve in the 10th game to surrender the set and failed to hold serve once in the second set as Safina stepped up her return game.

"I did everything I had to do. I stayed aggressive the entire time," said Safina, who finished off the match on her second match point with a stinging backhand service return.
"My serve wasn't working because she was very consistent and I was always nervous because I knew if I didn't make the first (serve), with the second she was pushing the ball so hard," Pennetta said.

Picking Up the Story
Posted 07/28/2008 @ 4 :17 PM

Yes, women’s tennis exists right now, but can you really say much more than that? The subject came up in a conversation that my friend and sometime Tennis.com correspondent Asad Raza and I were having with a casual tennis fan this weekend. He asked, like so many people seem to ask these days, “What’s going on with women’s tennis? Anything?” Neither Asad nor I had a good answer. Various wins and losses were certainly occuring, but they fit no storyline. There are few things more depressing to a sportswriter than a sport with no recognizable narrative arc. Without one, tennis is just one winner and unforced error after another.

This is nothing new to WTA fans. The summer months, when injuries and indifference tend to peak among the women, can stifle even the most fascinating emerging narratives. As of last week, Ana Ivanovic, who had won her first major this spring in Paris, hadn’t made the U.S. hard-court scene. The Williams sisters, who had found themselves together in a Slam final again at Wimbledon, had caught the injury bug. The one story that was played up last week—can Jelena Jankovic reach No. 1 for the first time?—was anything but fascinating. In fact, it only reinforced the idea that the tour makes no sense right now. Not only has Jankovic never won a Grand Slam, she’s never even been to the finalof one. She had ascended not because she had won when it counted, but because she had entered a lot of tournaments and done pretty well in most of them. Imagine if Nikolay Davydenko were the No. 1 player on the men’s computer. On second thought, don’t. You may start to wonder if there’s a point to anything.

Then, this weekend, we picked up the tale of Dinara Safina again. Marat’s little sister had been a story herself this spring at Roland Garros, where she reached her first major final. After cramping and losing at Wimbledon to Shahar Peer, she continued in Los Angeles where she had left off in Paris. There she had saved match points and won on two separate occasions; here she did the same against her countrywoman Alla Kudryavtseva. Safina was asked afterward how she did it. I liked her answer: “I just kept remembering that the match isn’t over until you shake hands.” Seems simple and realistic enough. Maybe I’ll try it the next time I’m losing.

For the first time, I’ve also begun to like watching Safina’s game. She had always seemed clumsy and overly infuriated to me in the past, a red face inevitably filled with painful emotion. Now I found myself realizing, and enjoying, how early she takes her backhand and how she isn’t afraid to gun it crosscourt on crucial points. Safina’s backhand is not just the equivalent to other players' forehands; she almost uses it like a serve. I also like how heavily she clubs her forehand, particularly from shoulder height, and how committed she seems to be to improving and winning. Like Ivanovic, Safina is fitter than she has ever been, and it’s making a difference; she can even scramble a little on defense. In the semis, she made Jankovic look more like the actress she wants to be than the top tennis player she is, beating the smiling Serb in straight sets and ending her bid for No. 1. (Jankovic wasn’t too distraught at the end.)

Of course, Safina could be another short story. She played a nervous game at 5-1 in the second and was broken. While she broke back for the title, the top women—the Williamses, Sharapova, Ivanovic—are the ones who can serve matches out consistently, rather than break them out. Safina also didn’t beat any of those top women in this tournament. But she’s a worker, and a strong ball-striker, and she seems more focused than angry now. She's also not a pusher, which you have to like no matter what the results may be.

Safina has the down-to-earth honesty of her brother, without the dark cynicism. On match point against Jankovic, the Serb sent a ball over the baseline that was called long. As the two players walked to the net, Jankovic challenged the call. Safina looked at her and said, “I think it was out.” There was something very calm and normal, friendly and honest, about the way she looked when she said it (and she was right, it was out). One of the Safins staying calm and normal on a tennis court? OK, we’ve found our story.

Sporting Life news
By Eleanor Crooks, PA Sport

Women's tennis is still waiting for someone to seize the opportunity presented by Justine Henin's shock retirement.

Ana Ivanovic looked set to take over Henin's mantle when she won the French Open but she was a major disappointment at Wimbledon and has not played since.

Serbian compatriot Jelena Jankovic could have overtaken her as world number one by winning the title in Los Angeles last week but lost in the semi-finals.

Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova are also in contention but hardly setting the world alight while the Williams sisters have the talent but not the commitment to WTA Tour events.

The name to look out for may just be the person that scuppered Jankovic's rankings hopes - Dinara Safina.

The Russian has long been famous for being Marat Safin's little sister, but she is making a name for herself in her own right now.

Reaching the final of the French Open was the breakthrough she needed, and the manner in which she achieved it was mightily impressive - coming from match points down against Sharapova and Elena Dementieva.

And now she has another title to add to her first crown of the year in Berlin in May - which established her as a dark horse at Roland Garros.

In fact, Wimbledon was the only one of her last five tournaments where the 22-year-old did not reach the final, lifting her to a career-best eighth in the world.

Safina is still some way behind the top four but the gap is closing and she has the consistency and toughness to emerge from the pack.

That indeed was a great match. Schnyder is a very tricky player but the way Dinara held up with her was just incredible. They where playing at such a high pace throughout the match that the current world nr.1 playing afterwards just seemed like some ordinary local player.
If she is able to keep this level of tennis, the who is supposed to stop her??

Dinara Q&A @ Rogers Cup

Q. Of all the press conferences you've done in your life, what's the percentage do you get asked a question about your brother?
DINARA SAFINA: Every day.
Q. Never a press conference you don't get asked about him?
DINARA SAFINA: No. Most is like, Did you get a message from him?
Q. Every single press conference?
DINARA SAFINA: Not every single. Either they ask, How is your brother? Did you get a message from him? And what did he say? That's all.

Q. Are you getting tired of winning?
DINARA SAFINA: You never can get tired of winning (smiling). After what you have to go through sometimes in the periods of the year, you know, this is just - I don't know - kind of paying off like the patience that you have or just like some disappointing losses. So you really just enjoying those moments.

Q. And who are the changes now that have helped you?
DINARA SAFINA: My coaches. My tennis coach, fitness coach are with me. They change me, I would say.
Q. More disciplined now?
DINARA SAFINA: Disciplined? I was not a party girl. I don't smoke. I don't drink alcohol. What do you mean with this? On the court I was always giving a hundred percent. This has nothing to do. But to give this hundred percent in the right way. I was still giving a hundred percent. That's why I had some results. But maybe they were not so specific. That's why I was so up and down. Like here I play okay, I would have like two months not so good. But when it's like specific, day to day, they work, they think how to get me better. That's why I think everything comes together.

Q. Did the warning for the unsportsmanlike conduct have any impact on you? You only lost three points after that.
DINARA SAFINA: Well, it's a fair one.First of all, I almost hit her head, and I almost hit the people. So if I would hit somebody on the stands, I would be suspended. But I was just very angry with, I don't know, like I'm trying my best, but still like something is missing. And I wanted just to explore my emotions. Okay, I went a little bit too much.
That was too risky.
Q. Did that allow to you calm down?
DINARA SAFINA: Well, I know that I cannot do more because second warning is penalty point. But actually after that I started to play better, so there was no need to maybe express more my emotions.

Q. Considering how well you've been playing for the last two months, when you enter a tournament, has your mindset changed at all as to your chances of winning and how you approach each opponent? Has your confidence level changed at all?
DINARA SAFINA: Well, I just go on the court and I take every opponent hundred percent serious. As I always say, there is no easy opponents because everyone gonna give their hundred percent to beat me. I respect them all. I try to go on the court and give my hundred percent and let's see who's gonna be stronger that day.

Q&A with Dinara

Q. We can't have a press conference without mentioning your brother. The best advice, the best help he ever gave to you in your career?

DINARA SAFINA: Once I remember he was playing the match against Kiefer in US Open. I came to watch him. It was my first Grand Slam singles I made. He's playing really bad match. He's like, Dinara, look, like this you don't have to play never (laughter).

Q. That was the best advice?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, because he was really like defensive, not doing anything on the court. He's like, Never play like this tennis.

Dinara Safina : Perfectionnist
(Interviewed by her brother Marat Safin)
[excerpt from a L'Equipe Interview during Kremlin Cup 2004 with Russia's top female players]

Marat Safin: Why are you so impatient? Why do you want everything immediately while you are just 17?

Dinara Safina: I love tennis too much. I love winning too much. I train myself hard. It's all I think about. So, I give everything to tennis and what I do is working. When I lose, I can't cope with it, it really makes me suffer. It's true that I'm only 17 but at this age, Martina Hingis was number one... And my temper is like that, when I want something, I need to have it.

M.S: What for example?
D.S: It's especially about tennis, about victories, about technical improvements... Anyway, nothing counts more than tennis.

M.S: And do you think it's good for you?
D.S: Yes because I love it. I want to give everything to tennis for the ten or twelve years I will play. Then I will move on to something else, I will have children, I will have another life.

M.S: But today, what do you like in this lifestyle as a professional tennis player? What really gives you pleasure?

D.S: Apart from winning matches, I like earning money. I really like to know that I can earn enough money to be able to live well for my whole life and buy whatever I want, whenever I want, without having to count my money. I'm reassured to think this, that I'll be able to spend money without having to count too much, and bring my children up without running out of anything. Apart from this, I don't really like travelling, I'm too scared of airplanes; it is the big black cloud over my life. And also defeats. Oh yes, there is something else that I like: the player's lounges. I love chatting with everybody, so I spend a lot of time there, and I talk, I talk...

M.S: Last question: What do you think of me?

D.S: You're my God! When you play, I love watching you. When you lose, I'm even sadder than when I lose. When you're hurt, I suffer. When you talk to me, I drink your words. When you come to see me playing, I'm beside myself with joy. I hate hearing or reading something bad about you. I know you are hard-working and that you do everything you can to be number one. For me, you have the biggest talent of any player and I don't have half of your talent. The only thing I have more of than you, is that I like working more than you do, I could be doing only this for 24 hours a day, and it's not your case, I know it. In any case, if you don't practice for 3 days, you're still as strong. If I miss one practice, I regress and I'm unhappy. It makes me cry, just like when I went to school and had bad marks. I want to do everything perfectly. Approximation makes me crazy.

Owwww Dina's words in that interview :awww: so sweet :cool:sure, just remember I'm first in the queue :p

that interview, was it conducted in english or translated from russain?hmmm it was an itw for French Magazine L'Equipe so maybe they did it in Russian and then it was translated in French for the readers.
It's a great itw, you could really see the admiration she has for him. I remember they had like 10 pages about Russian female players, and on each page they wrote a presentation of a girl, but for Dinara they had no presentation they had this itw of her by Marat. I found it so cool :D

Mark my words, she is gonna win a medal at this thing!

BEIJING, CHINA

D. SAFINA/N. Li
7-6, 7-5

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You had two matches yesterday and one match today. How did you survive all these very gruesome matches? How was the reaction from the crowd affecting you on today's game?
DINARA SAFINA: Well, how I survived? So I guess I survived because I could play.
Well, I just accepted they did this to me; that I had to play in less than 24 hours three matches. And maybe I was not really happy with what they did. I had a little bit anger, so I just put everything on tennis court, and I was just trying to stay focused and point by point.
I knew that the crowd would be against me. But I also accepted it because for me doesn't matter. I have my tennis coach and I don't care who is sitting there and who's clapping for who. I have my person next to me, and doesn't matter.

Q. How does this compare to reaching the final at Roland Garros?
DINARA SAFINA: I think this is more something else 'cause French Open, at least I had some -- like everything what was going on yesterday, that I had this, then I had doubles. I still out of this won my singles match. So it makes bigger.
But doesn't matter, French Open or Olympics, it's two such a big tournaments. It's nice because the first time in my life I'm playing Olympics, and I got a chance in the last moment to play singles. And I proved that for the medal.

Q. In that second set, down a break, obviously you're fighting very hard, but you're also getting frustrated at times in that second set. What got you through the match in the end?
DINARA SAFINA: Just desire to win. Okay, I'm controlling now much more my emotions. But still I was not so getting pissed. I was just getting angry on myself. I had to be aggressive. On some points, I was a little bit passive.
But it still was nothing because I was just pushing and forcing myself for to do more on tennis court.

Q. What is the difference between an Olympic tournament and a Grand Slam tournament?
DINARA SAFINA: Well, I guess it's different 'cause it's once in four years, just make it like this. But actually I took it like it's a single tournament for me. I didn't really think it's like, let's say, Grand Slam. I just say, okay, it's another tournament. I must say draw is much tougher than somewhere else.
But, I don't know, Grand Slam and Olympics, of course if I would play in French Open, I play against a girl against France, it would be the same. They would all support this girl. Today was the same. I was playing the girl against from here. They were supporting. But it's also nice, some other fans, like Russian, they're coming and supporting me.
Maybe somewhere like in singles tournaments, there never be so many people and like supporting like each country. But here it's like you always have some people who is either cheering for them, either cheering for me.

Q. More or less Davis ambience?
DINARA SAFINA: Yeah. If I would play somebody else, it would be 50/50. Today it was maybe 80/20 or maybe more (laughter). I was trying to be polite.

Q. You look ahead now to the gold medal match against somebody you know very well, Elena Dementieva. Also there's the potential that Russia takes a gold, silver and bronze.
DINARA SAFINA: I will just cross my fingers that it's gonna be like this.

Q. You played three games in the last 24 hours. You won two of them. Maybe you are considered one of the toughest women in this tournament. How do you feel about that?
DINARA SAFINA: I already answered this question.

Q. What about your reaction to your opponent's game? What do you think of her play? The other day she beat Venus Williams. She looks like she's not as strong as she was in that game.
DINARA SAFINA: So you just want to say that I'm much worse than Venus Williams, that's why she can beat Venus and she can lose to me. That's what you're trying to say? I mean, I'm also player. I mean, she's a great player. But today maybe I was a little bit more lucky. She's a really good player. I don't know why you blaming her. I mean, she's a great player, I must say. Okay, it was like 50/50 match. She had some chances. She didn't took it. I took my chances. The score is 7-6, 7-5. It was very close. It was very fragile this match.
I guess I was a little bit luckier in this moment. I mean, if she would not be injured, she was really unlucky. Last year she doesn't play for six months. This year she started the season unbelievable. She was again unlucky. If she had been playing consistent for one year, you will see her in top 15 like this (snapping fingers)

I'm sure she was disappointed but it's still a big achievement so she should be proud of herself.

I'm slighly shocked Zvonareva won the bronze though :o

what rock have you been hiding under ;)

DINNNARAAA!! I was watching the medal ceremony, on NBC online. and tarpi :haha: :haha: :haha: somehow I knew he'd be there :p the "commentary" on the online thingy said maybe dinara had too much respect playing against an older russian girl so she was nervous

and when she challenged last in the 3rd set the commentary said: "like bro, like sis in the challenges" :o

Congrats to Dina!

Years from now, the moment of all three girls standing on the podium is what she may remember most.

Well done girl :yeah:, be very very proud of yourself ... you're still so young, plenty of chances for the gold one ;)

I saw the whole match, it wasn't the best one i've seen of her, but she did gave one helluva fight in the 3rd set ... she was so tired :awww: and she made me cry when she was :sobbing: ....

Ooooh, and Tarpi  :lick: :inlove:

I saw the very end of Dinara's practice at the Open on Tuesday. She was on the farthest court from the bleachers so she looks either very small or blurry. :o I decided to share them here because I'm not a member of WTAworld. Hope you like them. :)

Don't mind Wawrinka in the foreground - some of these pics were intended to be of him, then I realized who was playing a few courts down :p
