10-05-2006, 12:04 PM
GO DINA GO!!! carroll are you watching it???

carroll
10-05-2006, 12:12 PM
Yes, i'm watching and i hate to have to say that but it's oafing time for Dinara... 5-1 for Daniela and Dina's turning mad at the umpire (for nothing special...) and start to threaten to throw the racket... She's making errors and basically lets too much hantuchova dictates the points... Not in a good day at all except on a few shots... I'm afraid the entire brain flown to Metz...

carroll
10-05-2006, 12:27 PM
6-2 hantuchova, dina missed some BP to take a chance to be 5-3... She's obviously in a day without and daniel is playing quite good so... Davai girl, just fight !

carroll
10-05-2006, 12:29 PM
Dina asked for coaching time at the end of the set and mummy Rausa come, daniela did the same and that was also her mum who came

carroll
10-05-2006, 12:40 PM
I can't believe it, she lost her serve putting a so easy smash (ball coming just near the net) out by searching a -sorry- stupid angle... Well, that's not her day at all i guess, it happens sometimes... 2-1 hantuchova with the serve...

PennyThePenguin
10-05-2006, 12:46 PM
*pat pat* are you sure it was coaching time and not mummy i need a hug time? :p

carroll
10-05-2006, 12:49 PM
Yes you're right it was hug time indeed ! But in my opinion a - sorry to be rude - "kick her ass and stop oafing please" time would have been more efficient because now it's 4-1 hantuchova with the serve and basically it's over...
Well, i hope she'll do better in the next tournament... And i hope too that Hantuchova is going to go on like that and not losing the next round by playing awful because it was not worth playing that great against Dina if she does...

6-2, 6-2, over...
Poor Dina, she's looking so disappointed and sad... I guess she's really angry at herself for playing so poorly today... Basically she never entered in the match... But a lot of credit for Daniela who served great and played really good shots... Dina really seems annoyed in her footstep, not moving as well as she used to...

I hope she'll be able to finish the season on a nice result because she made so much improvement this year that it would be tough for her to finish losing early... But maybe that was too much effort and now her mind needs rest... Maybe also the pressure of being in a tight course to thre Masters ? ANyway now i think it will be difficult for her to play a place for that...

Safina eyeing top-ten spot in 2007

Dinara Safina is determined to cement a top-ten ranking in 2007 after an injury ruined her season.

The 20-year-old Russian, whose brother Marat Safin is a former mens" number one, called time on her season in October after she was diagnosed with a fatigue-related illness.

At the time she was ranked at number ten, but slipped to 11 by the end of the year. However, she believes the experience will help her reach new heights in the coming season.

She said: "I was so tired I just wanted to stay at home but it's all experience for me." Now I know what my body can do and I know how to take care of it."

Safina makes her return to competition on New Year's Day at the Australian women's hardcourt championship in Queensland.

Safina is seeded second behind Martina Hingis for the event and plays fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva in her opening match.

Dinara Safina, the second seed, trounced Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 6-2 and then took a swipe at her fellow Russian's tactics after Likhovtseva took numerous breaks for a foot injury. "I don't think she had anything - I don't believe in these games," said Safina, the 20-year-old sister of Marat Safin. "She may be really hurt but if it really happened then why was she still running on the court? Maybe she just wanted to disturb me."

Dinara will play against Hingis in the Gold Coast final. I didn't think she would win that match when I started following the second set. She had lost her serve too many times in this match. At some point she was down 4-6 2-5 and Shahar Peer to serve for the match. The rain suspended the play for less than 5 minutes, and I don't know what happened but Dinara broke back immediately when they returned, then held easily, and broke back again! She won the tiebreak very easily as well. And the third set was a piece of cake! 4-6 7-6(1) 6-1 :woohoo:

Hingis played only 7 games and then her opponent retired. She'll be tough to beat tomorrow :awww:

Dinara and Hingis after their semifinals:

"She was playing like No.1, I couldn’t believe it," Safina said. "Then, she had 64 51 and I just started going for my shots. I held serve then we had the rain break. I saw her and she seemed to be a little nervous, and I thought, this is it, I have to go for it. I suppose I was a little lucky, but my shots just started going in."

"The match will be different from any I've played this week," Hingis said. "Safina is a tall girl and she really hits the ball; I've played her a couple times and won. I've watched her matches, and the quality was very high. I'm going to have to play well. I'm confident. You have to be when going into a final."

"I still have to play doubles tonight so then I'm going to think about it," Safina said. "It's the last day tomorrow; I'm just going to give it everything I've got."

OMG! OMG! :woohoo: :aparty: :yippee:

6 January, AAP - Big-hitting Russian Dinara Safina outlasted world No.7 Martina Hingis to win a thrilling final at the Australian Women's Hardcourts Championships on the Gold Coast today.

The 20-year-old Safina triumphed 6-3 3-6 7-5 in two hours, 10 minutes in a high-quality decider between the top seeds at Royal Pines Resort.

It was a tremendous effort from Safina considering the world No.10 had played a gruelling semi-final against Israeli teenager Shahar Peer before backing up in the doubles last night.

In stark contrast, five-time grand slam champion Hingis had spent just three hours, 27 minutes on court this week compared to Safina's six hours, 41 minutes heading into today's decider.

It's the first time Safina has defeated Hingis in three attempts, including a final in Rome in May last year.

"Everyone's going to have to watch her because she's going to be even better than her brother (former men's world No.1 Marat Safin)," Hingis declared at the post-match presentation.
:p

Safina, sidelined towards the tailend of last season with medical fatigue syndrome, won the opening set 6-3 but the 26-year-old Hingis claimed the second set by the same scoreline to set up an exciting finish.

The Russian led 4-2 in the third set but again allowed Hingis back into the match in the battle between the 2006 Gold Coast semi-finalists.

Safina eventually edged ahead 6-5 and Hingis crumbled on serve in the next game as her opponent took out the championship with a forehand winner.

"I hope it's not our last final... and good luck in the Australian Open," she said to Hingis before holding the trophy aloft.

Safina and her Slovenian playing partner Katarina Srebotnik will contest the doubles final against unseeded pair Iveta Benesova and Galina Voskoboeva in the next match on centre court.

And then Katarina and her won the doubles in straight sets! :woohoo: First tournament of the year, 2 titles! :aparty: It couldn't start any better, could it?

Congratulations Dinara! :worship:

Congrats! It's a good thing Marat's not playing this week. :tape:

When you get engaged you also get the wedding ring but you wear it on the right hand until the wedding. And people know you are engaged to be married. At the wedding the ring moves to the left hand.
Traditionally, the engagement ring is the wedding ring itself, but now there are also engagement rings-very expensive, and the wedding ring is brought to the actual wedding.
This way, people don't know if you have an engagement ring or a simple ring on your right finger.

I think there's some tradition/habit that is: a woman wears her engagement ring on her right hand as long as she is engaged, then when she gets married, she puts the engagement ring on the same finger but on the left hand, with her wedding ring. At least that's what I was told a few years ago.

(damn, the ring on my right hand must have been confusing guys for years now! :awww: :p)

Oh brother! Dinara has game to eclipse Marat, says Hingis
Nick Smart

08Jan07

LIKE her famous brother, Australian Women's Hardcourts champion Dinara Safina has the same fiery temperament and imposing physique that intimidates opponents.

And now Safina has been paid the ultimate compliment by Swiss champion Martina Hingis -- who said she will become a better player than her brother Marat Safin.

The former world No.1 made the comment after being beaten by Safina in a thrilling three-set epic at Royal Pines on Saturday 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Hingis said the 20-year-old has a big future and believes she is well on the way to emulating the feats of Safin -- himself a former world No.1.

"Everyone's going to have to watch her because she's going to be even better than her brother," she said.

"Marat is such a genius -- he can play unbelievable tennis.

"He won the Australian Open and the US Open, and I love to watch him.

"She (Safina) definitely doesn't have as much touch but she has more will and desire."

Hingis held a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Safina going into the match but the top seed said the big-hitting youngster has improved dramatically since their last meeting in 2006.

"She's on the right path -- she's become a little calmer and she can manage her emotions better," she said.

"She is slowly but surely arriving at where she wants to get to, and she has got in the top 10 now as well."

While Hingis saw the final as a missed opportunity, she believes the tough hit-out will help her preparation for the rapidly approaching Australian Open.

"I think in a way it came down to a lack of matches, and not having played for six weeks," she said.

"And if you want to play well next week and in grand slams you definitely need matches like that, and I know physically I was able to hold against her."

Safina will take away sweet memories of the Gold Coast after also winning the doubles title on Saturday.

Just an hour after defeating Hingis in the singles final, she joined partner Katarina Srebotnik to beat unseeded pair Iveta Benesova and Galina Voskoboeva 6-3, 6-4 in the final.

The world No.10 was ecstatic and said she had low expectations coming into the tournament.

"It is great -- there is not much I can say," she said.

"Coming here I couldn't even imagine that I could win it, because looking at it I knew it was a very tough draw.

"There were many good players in the bottom of the draw like (Sam) Stosur, (Ana) Ivanovic and (Shahar) Peer.

"I am really happy with the way I played during the whole tournament."

Many thought Hingis had the wood over Safina after beating her twice before, but the No.2 seed came in prepared.

"After every loss you learn something and you try not to make the same mistakes next time," said Safina.

"So I lost to her two times before and I knew what I had to do to beat her.

"And I knew I could do it today."

Safina did remarkably well to back up for the singles final, as she played two tough matches on Friday night.

After beating Israeli gun Shahar Peer in a hard-fought three-set win, she then had to play her doubles semi-final straight afterwards.

Safina has old guard in sights
By Clive White, Sunday Telegraph

Being the sister of Marat Safin, it was perhaps understandable that Dinara Safina should believe it when everyone around her told her that success would come as a matter of course. Naturally, it didn't. There never has and never will be a substitute for hard work, no matter how good the pedigree or how great the talent, and now it's beginning to pay off, to such an extent that Martina Hingis recently predicted she could even eclipse her two-time grand slam-winning brother. Safina will take that with a pinch of salt also.

She is, however, now a genuine contender and one of a clutch of young players who are threatening to sweep aside the old guard in 2007. Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Amelie Mauresmo and Serena Williams have already this year felt the chill wind of change, even if the soon-to-retire Belgian did manage to pull it around against another young pretender, Serbia's Jelena Jankovic, when match-point down, in the final of the Medibank International in Sydney on Friday.

"Everyone should watch her because she's going to be maybe even better than her brother," said Hingis after losing to Safina in the final of the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championship on the Gold Coast last week. "She doesn't have as much touch, but she has more will and desire."

It was, as Safina said, "a nice compliment" — providing she meant it. "I hope she was honest to me. She might really see something inside of me, so now I just have to discover it myself."

It was the home truths of a little-known Russian coach, Alexandr Zlatoustov, that had the greatest effect upon Safina, now coached by Glen Schaap. She had followed in her brother's footsteps to Barcelona at a formative stage of her career, but having reached the top 50 of the Sony Ericsson Tour her career plateaued two years ago.

"I thought it was going to be much easier, that things would come by themselves," the 20-year-old said. "I had not wrong people but wrong opinions around me, telling everything will come. But then I had a Russian coach who explained everything to me, who opened my eyes.

"I asked him, 'What's going on? Why aren't I playing so good?' He asked me, 'Do you really think you're giving 100 per cent in practice?' I said, 'I think so'. He told me, 'I think you can do more'. It was tough for me to change but I understood if I want to be up there I have to change."

Work ethic has always been something which set the Russian women apart, even if the men, Safina says, are mentally "a little bit weak". She wasn't, of course, referring to her temperamental brother, but if Safin had had some of the desire that his sister now has he might have done a lot more in his career, which is what Hingis was alluding to.

Safina is nothing if not tenacious, even when the conditions, it seems, couldn't be worse for a Germanic type like herself, she will tough it out, her face glowing redder with every game.

"If the [Russian] woman really wants something she will really go and get it," she said, "we never give up, even if we have tough moments we will come through," she said.

Camaraderie is not something the Russian women are big on. Safina admitted they don't socialise together as the French do, but there was certainly nothing wrong with their team spirit when they beat France in Paris to win the Federation Cup in 2005.

Safina played a big part, partnering Elena Dementieva in the decisive doubles rubber. Now it's time for selfish thoughts and to be famous for something other than being Safin's sister. "Maybe I'm less talented than Marat, but I'm trying," she said.

She worships him soooooooo much, even now that she is a top 10 player, and has become so consistent (maybe more than he's ever been), and he isn't doing so well, she still see him as the family hero. Nothing's really changed since her first interviews when she was 16-17 and unknown from the biggest part of the public. She's still :worship::hearts: when talking about him. That's so cute. :)

thanks Pam
