Okay bad news to start the day sorry : Dina is out of New Haven because of a luxation of the elbow... I'm not sure that in english luxation is the same as in french so if a french in here car correct me, don't hesitate (en France on dit "une luxation du coude")
I hope she'll be able to play the US Open...

.....

It's been an eventful week for Safina.

News that her brother, tennis star Marat Safin, suffered a suspected concussion in a car crash in Cincinnati on Thursday didn't faze her in a quick win over Nicole Pratt in the quarter-finals.

She is also playing without her coach Glen Schaap, who was suspended two weeks by the WTA at last week's even in Los Angeles after an altercation with another coach. Schaap was already on probation for a similar incident at the Australian Open in January. An other oaf in the family? ;)
WTA Tour spokeswoman Isabelle Hodge denied a report that Schaap was involved in a fistfight, saying there was "no physical altercation."

Carroll>> about the injury... maybe she's not really injured but had to give an excuse for late withdrawal so that she didn't get fined? (the USO starts in 6 days, i'm trying to stay optimistic. We need a Safin to defend the family's honor again :p)

I do not know the exact story, but he's had an "encounter" with Yuri Sharapov which included a bin. Wether he pushed him in, against or over it, I'm not sure.

We should rename them SafInjury.
Anyway, she's probably just being safe for USO.

they were tossing it between the two courts for the first two sets and I guess that worked well. then when marat got it for his own, it was a little cranky cos it liked being tossed around. then it finally settled down so he could win the match :) simple really! :p but whoever was tossing the brain around must have a HUUUGGGEEEE arm.

In my opinion she has already proved that she was able to compete with the top 10 by beating Dementieva and Kuznetsova at Rome or Sharapova at the French Open... Now she just has to go and play her best, hitting hard (mauresmo hates that when the other is really agressive) and take all the opportunities she had! After all that's a remake of the Open Gaz de France final : she has done it one time, she can make it twice !

article on the USO site about uhm...wine :p

Dinara Safina (RUS). A second-label bottling from a passionate and famous family winery, this is no cynical effort to capture the mid-price market. In fact, in the last two vintages, when the winery declined to make its signature Brunello di Montalcino—a muscular and brooding, but occasionally erratic big-ticket wine—it has used the best grapes from the harvest for this release, making it an excellent value. Though it does not approach the artistry of its sibling sipper, the second wine, also a Sangiovese clone, is actually preferred by a growing number of consumers.

Safina 'idol' is inspiration
BY JEFF WILLIAMS
Newsday Staff Writer

September 5, 2006

Tennis is a family game, and the Williams sisters took family ties to the highest levels by winning Grand Slams. But brothers and sisters have never have won Grand Slams and seldom reach the heights. Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and her brothers Emilio and Javier are the most successful of all the brothers and sisters. Arantxa won four Grand Slam titles, including the 1994 U.S. Open. Her brothers never won a Slam, but each of them was a tournament winner and they each made the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.

Marat Safin, the 2000 U.S. Open champion, advanced to the fourth round yesterday with a win over Olivier Rochus. Safin has been in heady territory before, having once been the world No. 1 and winning the 2005 Australia Open. Now his 20-year-old sister, Dinara Safina, has reached the quarterfinals of the Open after a 6-0, 7-5 win over Virginie Razzano.

"He was my idol," said Dinara with a personality as endearing as her brother's. "The way he was walking, the way he hit the racket, I have to do it like this."

Safin was 20 years old when he beat Pete Sampras in the 2000 Open final. Dinara is 20 and having her best season, reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and achieving the quarterfinals or better in 11 of 18 tournaments. She is 13th in the world, her highest singles ranking. Could they become the first brother-sister Grand Slam champs? "I'm one step in front," said Dinara with a shy smile. "He's still in the [4th] round."

i hope they win the men's and women's us open this year

no maybe not what you traditionally think of as russian accent, but for some reason she sounds exactly like a very good high school friend of mine(who was also russian and was the best tennis player in school history) right down to mannerisms and intonations...when i watched it it felt like i was hearing my friend talk .
and she definitely doesn't sound like marat in terms of accent(then again they didn't grow up/learn english together, lol). Her sentence structuring is better :o, and besides her english is better than marat's when he was her age.

Dinara Safina on being watched by big brother
By Kamakshi Tandon
07 september 2006

Marat Safin may have exited the US Open one round earlier than little sister Dinara Safina, but he can still count her among his fans.

“He’s real, not fake, and he’s a very open guy,” said Safina earlier this week, explaining Safin’s appeal for tennis fans. “You can see even on the court. If the ball is out, he’s giving the point. Okay, sometimes he get angry or whatever, but people don’t come to see robots on the court.”

Safina has had better results than Safin this year, reaching a career high of No. 13 in the rankings just before the US Open while he sits outside the top 100. But she’s still in awe of her older sibling. “When I was young, he was my idol,” she said.

After having dinner together before the start of the US Open, two haven’t seen much of each other during the tournament – they’re staying in different hotels and their matches have usually been scheduled at different times. The last time Safina watched him play was during his first-round win against Greg Rusedski at Wimbledon.

But relying on second-hand accounts is nothing new for Safina – she missed Safin’s US Open win in 2000 because she had no TV coverage at her training base in Spain. She followed the match through text-message updates from Safin’s then-girlfriend.

Safin has been known to catch Safina’s matches in person when he can, such as in Moscow last October when he was off the tour with injury. Exercising his prerogative, big brother Marat sometimes has advice for little sis.

“He tells me, ‘don’t put pressure [on yourself]’,” said Safina. She feels he’s taught her to be calmer on the court and not get as frustrated by losses – even if it’s sometimes a case of: do as I say, not as I do.

“He say, ‘don’t do this,’” said Safina. “I say, ‘but you’re doing this.’

“He say, ‘I’m telling you this from my experience.’”

Safin criticized his sister publicly at the beginning of last year, suggesting she stop relying on their mother, Rausa, as a coach. Rausa is a tennis instructor who shaped the games of Anastasia Myskina and Elena Dementieva as well as providing early training for Marat and Dinara.

Safina ultimately took Safin’s advice, and now says it’s easier when mom is just mom. Like her brother, she’s gone through her share of coaches but says she’s happy with her current choice of Glenn Schapp.

On Wednesday, Safin and Safina both played – and lost – their early afternoon matches at the US Open. Safin was contesting a delayed fourth-round encounter against Tommy Haas, which he would go onto to lose in a fifth-set tiebreak, while Safina was being dispatched by Amelie Mauresmo. “They showed a couple of times a few shots from her court,” said Safin. “I was following her.”

Safina was sitting in a press conference as Safin entered the later stages of the fifth set. Could she turn the tables and offer him some advice?, she was asked Safina shook her head. “He’s too old.”

Safin agreed. “It would never happen,” he said determinedly.

But her ascendancy has also made it more difficult for him to hold forth. “She’s doing better than me,” he said. “She’s basically on her way to become a Top 10 player in a couple of weeks. So I’m not worried about her. I should worry a little bit more myself."

Still, he can now still back and take a little credit. “It’s unacceptable from her side to do some things on the court what she was doing before. Right now, it looks like she’s stopped doing that.” he said. “She was top 50, 60, 40, 30 – jumping all around. Right now, she’s basically cracking Top 10.”

He smiled. “So it was pretty good advice, I guess.”

Yup, I actually stayed up to watch Amélie lose the third 6-0.

Before that I watched Justine vs. Jankovic (it was the first time I saw her play). What a barbie!! The way she was dabbing her face with the towel was just :haha: (it looked like she was scared to rub off her foundation or something) and she kept checking herself out on the big screen. :o
Oh and BOOHOO at her for saying Justine 'faked' her back injury. Justine didn't even call the trainer or delayed the match in any way. Jankovic was at two points of victory, the match was hers for the taking and if she f*cks it up by starting to argue with the umpire and letting her level drop, then she has only herself to blame.

Maybe she asked for the trainer when Canvas stopped broadcast for 15 minutes (news) and I had to switch to RTBF2 (they show commercials during changeover).
But I don't recall her having treatment yesterday.

Maybe she asked for the trainer when Canvas stopped broadcast for 15 minutes (news) and I had to switch to RTBF2 (they show commercials during changeover).
But I don't recall her having treatment yesterday.

I'm pretty sure I saw a trainer at the jankovic match on the court.
But the longer I think about it the more I start to doubt

I'm a doubter

lol! *patpat*

I was lmao with the whole treatment against Lindsay. It looked like the female physio was hugging her tightly. :p

(it looked a little bit uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable as that time Marat got the tigh massage during the final. That was kind of disturbing to watch :p )

Sorry but i completely disagree with you all about Jelena Jankovic.
First she has an obvious talent, she defeated 3 top ten players here and was playing amazing tennis against Justine before her nerves let her down. She's still young and that was her first semi final in a slam so it's normal and she's not the first one to experience that (ask Justine about the semi final at the French OPen 2001...).
Then i actually met her at the French OPen this year and she's really a nice person, not a diva at all... After her match on small courts she was answering fans, signing and everything with the smile.
And last she's told to be very funny and nice personnality by the other girls of the tour who said that in the locker room she's one of the funniest ones. (By the way, Amelie Mauresmo sent Jelena her own doctor before the semi final because she had a serious issue with her back.)
Really i feel like it's not really accurate to be tough with that player after what she's done and proved at the US Open... To finish, i didn't see anybody reproach to Mauresmo what she said about Justine after the AO final this year where she was saying all her doubts about justine's injury.... And that was way much harder than what Jankovic said...
That's all i wanted to say ! ;)

:sobbing: :sobbing: Dinara and Katarina... they broke in the first set but Dechy and Vera broke back immediately, then they were up 5-1 in the tie break but lost 6 points in a row :( and in the second set they broke again, kept the advantage til 5-4 but then Dechy and Zvonareva broke back and held, and broke again.
6-7 5-7  oafettes :awww:

Hopefully there will be more GS finals for her!

I'm totally with you on that! BOOOOHOOOOO Jankovic, that wasn't a fine art to talk to our dear Enric. :( http://www.smileyhut.com/yes_no/nono.gif
She may be a funny girl but she totally lost the plot.
And JuJu didn't call for a trainer or anything.

If you tell it ;) But still, i feel it's not fair to BOO at her like that for really nothing... Thats's just a detail so no problem, that was just my thought... Jankovic had tough times at the start of the season, had a virus, wasn't winning a match in 9 tournaments, fought hard to come back since the clay season... Plus she's at university, makes a lot of hard work to be able to do both so i think she's a brave one that's all... I'm like that, don't like the people to be BOOO for nothing ;)
And really if we had BOOO each time our oaf was breaking rackets, shouting at umpires and even sworing...

I actually agree with you ;) I wouldn't Booo any player for post-match itw or for arguining etc, who I'm to judge? Some things I don't tolerate but most times I think it's not that serious (qouting Marat, everybody makes mistakes LOL) especially if we talk about young girls.
And what I don't like is when people tend to judge others withount knowing the whole story, or reading some one-sided or exaggarated or distorted stories (i'm talking in general, not about Jankovic)...I think I've been taken too far LOL.
