I can't believe it! I just can't believe it!!!!!!!!! Amazing Dina!!!!!!!!! What a great battle, what a great champion!!!!! She never gave up and completly deserved her victory!!!!!!!!! Now Kuznetsova in the next round: Davai!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if Marat or her mum and dad will come for the next matches if she goes on like that, she needs support after all! Anyway, this girl is fantastic! And we have to say that Sharapova is an incredible player too whatever we may think of her personality because playing like that without having played any clay tournament before, that's huge...

OMG you guys I saw ALL of the match (so much for studying :o ) and it was unbelievable in the end ("Incroyable! Incroyable!" was pretty much all our commentator could say  ).
Maria did choke at the end, she stopped 'going for it' and Dinara didn't make any unforced errors anymore.

It's amazing the constant pounding away Maria does. She has no subtlety in her game but she's great at hitting the lines hard and then it was clear Dinara needs to work on her speed (she's too slow).
Of course Kuzzie is yet another type of player. We'll see!

yeah Sharapova has no exceptional game, but she hits very hard along the line and runs on every ball like a dog. Amazing.
Dina is tall, she needs to make run training sessions to improve her speed. And maybe lose a little more weight again, although she already looks way fitter than she used to, I can't help repeating it in my mind everytime i see her play those days :yeah:

Mostly because I hate running and stuff. Only sports I like are swimming, dancing, and maybe badminton and volleyball, but I don't really practice those anymore. I should join a club or so. I like fitness too but these days it's really expensive and I think it's important to have someone who sticks through it with you, because when I'm alone I tend to stop really quick.

3.The "wannabe Ian Thorpe" kicks me all the time

Great win for Dinara!!! 2 comebacks in fact, the 2nd one harder than the first. I think Maria was surprised that Dinara was still there and fighting back. The element of surprise is always a good battle tactic. The commentators here likened this match to a boxing contest. I actually managed to see most of this match, a real achievement in the holidays.

"He said, 'Great fight, good comeback,"' she said. "It's nice." "

random info: Fourteen of the Top 16 seeds on the women's side have advanced to the Sweet 16, that's the most at the French in the Open Era

So glad Dina was part of them... maybe it's the beginning of a series of good results in the GS now

Oh, great match. I was pretty surprised to see Dinara wearing a gold necklace with a gold charm of the moon in quarter phase on it. Maybe she and I are on the same wavelength. 'Luna' means 'the moon.' Does anyone remember seeing her wearing this before? Hmmmm.... made me wonder about a few things.

No she doesn't. It's was 4th rd like Dowa said, and that was her only moment of brilliance in GS so far. If you check her results you'll see 1st rd, 2nd rd, 3rd :o

Article from L'Equipe, Monday 5 June
my comments in size1 ;)

They moved the earth/clay
(in French clay= terre battue, earth=clay... play on words here i think)

Mario Ancic and Dinara Safina mastered a surface that didn't fit them in the past. And they know what it means to hang on.

They arrived in RG with good results, one with a final in Rome, the other with a SF in Hamburg. Dinara Safina and Mario Ancic have 2 more things in common in addition to this successful preparation. They won a decisive match in the Fed Cup and Davis Cup finals last year (in doubles for the Russian, in singles for the Croatian), and they both have another tennis player in the family. A brother for Dinara ( Marat, former world #1), and a sister for Mario (Sanja, 17 y/o, ranked 338 in WTA).

(here was the Mario part, but I didn't translate it, sorry for the fans :o)

Safina, the survivor

While Safin was brooding over his loss in Moscow, Safina -the little sister- was keeping the Slavic flame of the family alive in RG. Same escapades on the spectacular aspect of the game, identical interest for daring attacks, Dinara managed Marat's legacy with dignity. The Russian never lost the tricks, she used her energy to reverse unlikely situations against Sharapova yesterday. In the first set, she saved 2 set points with authority, before making her fellow Russian sick (7-5), and we had not seen anything yet.

Rushed off her feet by her opponent's bursts, down 6-2 5-1, the youngest of the Safins, evanescent for a long time, found the way to the battleground again with bravery: 6 games swallowed (!). 6 games that she took with her fierce determination, her sens of offensive, her passing shots, her rallies with varied results; 6 games that finally made the varnish of Sharapova crumble, Sharapova who looked puzzled.
This ride from the less statuesque of the 2 players was incredible and inexorable at the same time. "There is no word to describe it, the winner simply said, more placid with her words than with her will. This comeback was unexpected. But at 5-1 I didn't want to leave the court. It was pleasant to be there. I had to play better if I wanted to stay. And I took control of the match. I said to myself: "It's you who shall make her run...". I had fun being on court actually".
(it was obvious! at 5-1 and then 5-2, she was constantly turning at Glen and smiling, even laughing   :yeah: )

"I play for myself"

Since a few months, this new positivism has transformed Safina it seems. Even though she still looks a bit potbellied, she has now more weapons to resist the tutelary shadow of her brother, whose sarcasm sometimes sounds anti-family. "Dinara must work on her physical condition if she wants to progress", mocked Safin kindly in last Wimbledon. "I run now, retorted his smiling sister yesterday, having now taken a weight off her. (again a word with 2 meanings, it think here they meant she has lost weight, and she also get free from Marat's shadow and the pressure on her shoulders) At the beginning it was difficult for me. When seeing me people were saying: "Here comes Marat's little sister". And I was probably overdoing it to prove that I could play well. I've been thinking about it since then, and I play for myself now".

Guided since January by a new coach, Dutch Glen Schaap, Safina combines a new type of game to this emancipation. Until recently, like a lot of her fellow (Russian?)female players, she used to use coaches without moderation. The drastic experiment proposed by Petrova's ex-coach seems to fit her. "We changed everything in her game actually", the long curly haired Dutchman said to journalists yesterday. Everything? Really? "Yes, everything. When we started working together I thought her game was so-so. It was a little surprise to me, I thought she would be stronger on some shots. So we started it all from the beginning". It suddenly clicked.
Yesterday Safin, being the good big brother he is, sent a SMS to congratulate his overexcited sister. (in English in the text)

This morning I read in the paper that Richard and Micha apleid for a wildcard. Micha giggled that she wasn't alowed to tell if they got it yet. I guess thats an affermative :D
LOL, cool then :yeah: They sopke about it here a few weeks ago, then again during RG they said Richard was training on grass to get fit and make his sister proud in Wimby ;) but since then, no news. Too much football as you said :p

and :woohoo: Dina.
