Q. It's a big surprise?

DINARA SAFINA: It is, yeah.

Q. But not for you?

DINARA SAFINA: No, no, definitely. Maybe I'm not so happy like I am inside because, no, it's maybe little bit shocked. Tired, you know. So I cannot, you know, show all my emotions that I have inside, you know. So I am like little bit...(smiling).

Q. It's the first time you beat Clijsters, seventh match.

DINARA SAFINA: Yes, you know (smiling). Never late, you know. I was coming out, I was like, "She's the only one player that I lost so many times to her," you know. I was like -- when I was going on the court, actually I didn't know what to think, you know. "I will win," or "Again I will lose," you know.

But then, you know, I think she didn't play her best match today, you know. I felt like she was doing a lot of mistakes, you know. She was getting a lot of free points, you know.

I just said, you know, "If I don't take this chance, then I will never again take the chance."

Q. You had a set point against you in the second set. If you'd lost that, lost the set, would you have been prepared for a third set? Were you ready physically, mentally?

DINARA SAFINA: This, I don't know. That was the key. When I missed the shot on deuce, you know, I made a good serve and I missed like little bit down the line, I was like, "No." Because the game before I had 15-40 on her serve.

And then I was a little bit aggressive on that game, actually, yeah, and I broke her also then straightaway.

And, I mean, lucky that it turned my way today.

Q. This is one of your best wins?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah. You know, I don't have so many big wins, but I can say I beat last year Sharapova and this year, you know, Clijsters. So maybe slowly.

Q. Tomorrow, against Dementieva.

DINARA SAFINA: Another great fighter, you know. Another fight match, you know.

Yeah, it's gonna be again a tough match. I know she will give her hundred percent like always. Yeah, I have to, you know, relax now and think about this later on, you know, and just go tomorrow and give everything, die on the court (smiling).

Q. Now you are the No. 1 of your family, in this moment.

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah (smiling).

Q. Yes, it's true. Are you happy?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, very (smiling).

No, I mean, you cannot compare me and my brother. I am No. 1, but when he will put gasoline in himself, he will be again No. 1. But I have to enjoy my time at least when I am now No. 1 (smiling).

Q. So an important victory like this, you speak with Marat or not?

DINARA SAFINA: No, no. We speak. I know he is -- I SMS my mom because they're flying today to Valencia. So if my mom get the message, every family will know because they're all flying today.

Q. This is a heavy load now. You have to play three matches in a row in three days. Four matches in four days.

DINARA SAFINA: And doubles.

Q. And doubles. Yes, you are ambitious.

DINARA SAFINA: Yesterday, we finish at 10 in the night playing doubles. We won 7-6 in the third. Yeah, I'm still in doubles, so...

Not so funny.

Q. Will you stay in the doubles?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah. It's definitely. If I am playing something, I am playing til the end. Doesn't matter, you know.

And especially she's Italian, you know, so she's playing at home. I mean, I cannot tank the doubles when she is playing home, you know. The people won't have respect to me otherwise.

You know, where I will never again play the doubles, or if I step on the court, I play.

Q. Yesterday you and Roberta won your match. It was a magic moment?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, it was a big fight yesterday, 7-6 in the third. So, yeah, I mean, at least in my history I can say not in singles but in doubles I beat Navratilova (laughing).

Q. Well, tell us about it. You'd never beat her before, right?

DINARA SAFINA: I did.

Q. You did?

DINARA SAFINA: One time.

Q. One time is all.

DINARA SAFINA: And one time she beat me. First time I beat -- okay, first time she retired against me in the third set (laughing).

I played against her 2003. In the third set she retired, and we played then 2005 US Open and she beat me in three sets first round.

Q. Were you a little afraid it was getting away in that last game, 10 minutes?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, I mean, it was Love-30 then she served two times on the line. Then I just started to -- I don't know what to think in my head, "bring it back" or "hit the ball." And I was thinking about not what I have to do, like is she gonna miss or she don't gonna miss. So then I was like, "It's better I go for it than to wait a mistake from her."

Q. Now, another Russian player or an Italian.

DINARA SAFINA: Okay, she's not so Italian. She's more Swiss (laughing).

Q. Okay. Half Italian.

DINARA SAFINA: Yes. I mean, it would be great match if I have to play against Kuzy. You know, we know each other very well. I just have to concentrate, same like I did today. I think who's stronger gonna win, you know.

Q. You are a little bit more nervous when you play against a Russian player, or no different than the others?

DINARA SAFINA: Well, you know, like if you play -- maybe if you didn't play for a long time with this girl or you don't know her, then doesn't matter for me against who I play. If I don't know the girl, then I'm little bit nervous. But if I know how she plays, then I just have to think, you know, what I have to do on the court. Then it's easier.

Q. You've played well on clay this year. Charleston was good. Rome is even better. How do you feel on this surface?

DINARA SAFINA: Good, you know. I had a good preparation. Okay, before Berlin, you know, I was in Monaco practicing. I was really working hard before the clay court season.

Q. What do you think your new coach is bringing to you?

DINARA SAFINA: He teach me lot of things, you know, that before maybe I was not giving like important thing, you know. And I think, you know, he really take care of me, you know. We have a great relationship, you know. He's, I can say, my best friend, you know. We understand. When he's on the court, seeing outside, and if I look at him, I know what he wants to tell me, you know. I'm really enjoying working with him.

Q. For you it's a big change comparing with last year?

DINARA SAFINA: You know, yeah. It's little bit different. That coach, he also, you know -- the Russian I had before, he teach me a lot of things, you know. He maybe teach me like at the beginning like I was like -- when I was younger I was like lazy in the practice. Not lazy, but I could, like, "I'm tired, I don't want to practice anymore." So he teach me if you want to be better, you cannot do this. So he really teach me to work hard, you know, day by day.

And then he teach me more now how to play, you know, the game, you know, what is my strongest shot, you know, what I have to do, you know. I think it's working.

Q. How long with him?

DINARA SAFINA: Since beginning of the year.

Q. It's a totally different question. This year at the French Open they start on Sunday. What do you think? Would you like to play on Sunday? They only play a few matches on the three main courts. Do you think it's a good thing, and do you agree with that?

DINARA SAFINA: No (smiling). Of course, we have one little day rest. How we can be happy with this if we don't have a rest (smiling)? lol...shades of marat

No, I mean, maybe it's good for the tournament we start on Sunday, no. But anyway I don't care. I mean, more importantly, then maybe I have two more days off (smiling).

Q. Since you beat the best seed, do you think you are favorite now? If not, who is favorite to win this tournament?

DINARA SAFINA: I don't know. It's really tough to say. Svetlana, I think she's in one of her best shape now. You know, Venus, she beat Patty yesterday. Patty, she's a great clay court player, you know.

I mean, now I think it's really open, you know. Martina, she's playing unbelievable. Flavia, you know. It's really open now. I mean, it's just matter who maybe that they fights more and has more eagerness to win or whatever, who's more make... I don't know how to say.

Q. Desire.

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, desire to win, you know.

Q. Have you got it?

DINARA SAFINA: Yes (smiling).

Q. You have also the doubles.

DINARA SAFINA: Uh-hmm. I think I'm fourth on or third on.

Q. Not today?

DINARA SAFINA: No, today I play doubles.

Q. Yes?

DINARA SAFINA: Yes, yes, I play doubles.

Q. Yes, you play doubles today?

DINARA SAFINA: Yeah, I think it's third or fourth. I know I have to play doubles (smiling).

Q. You have to think of too many things at this point of the tournament.

DINARA SAFINA: No, I go and I play. No, no, I don't even think I gonna tank. No, no, no. I go and fight. But I didn't remember which match actually I play, third or fourth. I only knew that I have first match singles.

Q. You say that you play better with the players that you know. Do you know Romina Oprandi?

DINARA SAFINA: I know her since Juniors.

Q. Oh, yes?

DINARA SAFINA: Yes. She's the same age or one year older than me.

Q. Yes, 20 years.

DINARA SAFINA: I know (smiling).

Q. Did you see the match against...

DINARA SAFINA: Zvonareva, yeah. We saw a little bit actually because I went to warm up before it yesterday. Then I know that she has unbelievable hands. And, I mean, I think she's playing good now. She beat so easy Zvonareva. She is a great fighter. Probably it's gonna be tough one.

Safina struggled through a final set lasting more than an hour before finally defeating Kuznetsova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5
on Saturday to reach her first final in more than a year.

The 16th-seeded Safina, sister of Marat Safin, moved to within one victory of giving Russia a sixth title from six
WTA Tier I events this season.

After winning the all-Russian struggle, Safina will face a stern test Sunday on the clay of the Foro Italico.

Kuznetsova was Safin's third high-profile victim this week after knocking out former winner Kim Clijsters and
defeating two-time Grand Slam finalist Elena Dementieva in the quarters.

"I didn't expect this," said Safina.
"I knew Kim was the favourite but I beat her and then beat Dementieva and now Svetlana.
"It's a dream come true for me."

Safina played -- and won -- her last final on May 15 last year, defeating Czech Zuzana Ordraskova
to claim the Prague title. In the interim, the 20-year-old ranked 19th fell at the semi-finals stage four
times this year prior to this breakthrough week in Rome.

Safina improved to three wins, two defeats over 2004 US Open winner Kuznetsova, who failed to
capitalise on a run of six straight winning games which gave her the first set and put her up a break
in the second.

Kuznetsova won the Tier I Miami event last month, one of four compatriots to have swept all the trophies
at the WTA elite level in 2006.

The victory in two hours, 33 minutes was plagued by breaks of serve, seven apiece from
an impressive 31 break point chances. :eek:

The big-hitting Kuznetsova's seven aces did her little good as the seventh seed lost her ninth match
of the season against 29 wins.

Safina has exceeded her career-best Tier I result by passing the semis. :) She also played in the
final four in Moscow last year, losing to eventual champion Mary Pierce.

The winner failed on her first attempt to serve it out, losing serve while leading 5-4 in the third set.
But yet another break of Kuznetsova provided another chance.
Two games later, the number 16 seed came good on her next opportunity to advance.

Such a pity that she lost... But that was a fabulous week for her anyway! I hope that it's going to bring her confidence for the next tournaments and i'm sure she can do great things at the french open... And now she knows that she can beat the top players !

So...for that I can say that the statement "impossible is nothing" is true (You understand Marat?). While about the matc,Hingis was much more better,she has "that something" more that makes of her a champion,but hat off to Dinara,she fought and didn't give up.It's been an amazing week for her and she can only improve and I'm sure she will reach the top soon!

DINARA SAFINA: I cannot say that I was -- yeah, maybe I was little bit tired, you know. Like I felt like I'm not as sharp, you know, as the other matches, you know, I was like yesterday. Other matches, I was like more into it. But today I was like I know really much less energy than usual.

Q. Were you encouraged by your comeback? I mean, for a while, it seemed that you weren't in the match at all.

DINARA SAFINA: Uhm, yeah. Well, first set also I left like 5-0. Then 5-2, you know.

I mean, she is the one player, she doesn't make any mistakes. So everything, it's on yourself. Like where you make a winner or you miss shot, because you know if you don't make a winner, she will finish making the winner. So it's really tough to play against her.

And second set I think at 4-1 I just -- I think she -- maybe she was little bit tight, but I felt like I made -- like I start to hit more wider, I start was looking more for the lines, and it was working.

But, yeah, unfortunately I couldn't break her at 6-5. I had Love-40. I mean, bad luck. But, I mean, she played great that point.

Q. You beat three top 10 players. Does that make this the tournament of your lifetime perhaps?

DINARA SAFINA: I could say yeah, you know. Of course I'm disappointed, you know, today. Not because maybe like first set I couldn't maybe play as I played the other matches. But, you know, life continue.

But still, you know, I had the great week here, you know. I never even dreamed about that I could be in the final here by beating three top 10 players.

Q. Could you feel that she was a little bit nervous at the end, maybe fear to win?

DINARA SAFINA: Maybe she was, but I think I can -- I start at that moment to be more aggressive, you know. Maybe she didn't expect. But I tried, you know, to push her, you know, like I had nothing else, you know. When I tried to play back, I had to run every time around the court, you know.

But I just tried to, you know, to make her run.

Q. Was she the toughest opponent you faced this week? Do you think she's in better form than Clijsters, for instance?

DINARA SAFINA: You know, they're different players, completely different players. You know, like Clijsters, she's looking every time for a winner. Martina, you know, like -- and also Kim, she makes mistakes, you know. So it's kind of, you know, at least you have mistakes from her. But from Martina, you don't get any free points. It doesn't matter. Even it's 40-Love, you still have to fight for it to win a game because she will play it in and she plays so deep, you know, so it's tough to play with her.

Q. What will your mother say?

DINARA SAFINA: I don't know. I mean, she's my mum, you know, she's not my coach. So who can be maybe little bit angry what I did wrong is my coach. But my mum, she's my mum. She has to take like -- I think she will say like, "bad luck" and just, "you had a great week."

Q. And did you talk to your coach?

DINARA SAFINA: No, not yet because he was sitting up there and I couldn't see him. After I will talk to him.

You know yesterday I spent 9 hours at the table. FOR LUNCH. Yes, my aunt had invited 20 people. Yes, it was a nice menu. But she had two people to help her with the cooking and serving. Hors-d'oevres at 12.30. Starters at 2 PM. Soup at 3PM. And then we had to wait until bloody 17u30 for the main course!! I was really :rolleyes: by then. So of course by 6PM everyone finished their 'lunch' :tape: and was waiting for dessert. Which was served at 7.15 PM.
Finally at 8PM there was coffee and cake.

We were finally on the way back home by 9PM. Home at 10PM and by then I had missed already 1.5 episodes of Grey's Anatomy. Which pissed me off because I thought that we'd get home WAY before that.

*edit* Yes, I realise it's kind of disrespectful complaining about it (since my aunt made an effort with the food and all that) but she was constantly saying 'let's wait a little, no need to hurry' while clearly all of the people were annoyed it took so long. :lol:
I think it's annoying when you are getting 'stuffed' with food and the courses come too close together but this was the complete opposite.

Seems it's something with my inner ears where the balance center is, I've had problems with balance before, just it hasn't been that bad and it has got well again. The doc said the blood circulation in my inner ear is bad. :(

I saw the match from start to end. Kim Clijsters was there with her sister and physio ( :confused: ).
The match was nice, with some nice rallies. Overall Dinara played ok (in the second set there were some patchy moments ;) ) and seems like Vera is still too insecure about her game to keep up the consistency.

We had two commentators: the one that looooves Marat (who did comments for AO05 ;) ) and then Carl Maes who's always making fun of Marat (not in a good way).. :o

I watched the match too! there was a "sandstorm" midway through the 2nd set lol. Vera started the match a little sleepily but woke up at around 0-3. then in the 2nd set, I didn't get to watch the first 4 games because the coverage switched to court 1 but anyway, dinara was patchy and made waaaaay too many UEs, but then the wind got to vera and threw her off course.

Seems it's something with my inner ears where the balance center is, I've had problems with balance before, just it hasn't been that bad and it has got well again. The doc said the blood circulation in my inner ear is bad. :(

forgot to tell you guys this.

on sunday, just before the telecast of dina's match. they showed the OOP for the day. and showed a spanish flag next to dina's name :o 10 seconds later, they showed the right flag as they switched to pics on dina on court :(

Safina stays hot, reaches third round

Russian Dinara Safina continued her fine form on clay with a 6-0 6-2 trouncing of Hana Sromova early Wednesday on Court No3. The 14th seed is into the Roland Garros third round for the first time in her career.

Her compatriot, men's 6th-seed Nickolay Davydenko, also advanced when Brazil's Florent Serra retired because of the flu. Davydenko was leading, 6-2 4-1.

"I can say it was an easy match today," Safina admitted. "I was pretty solid today. I played aggressive."

Safina raced off with the first set in just 23 minutes, hitting 14 winners along the way. She took the opening two games of the second set, but Sromova managed to slow down Marat's younger sister by moving her around, especially with the drop shot.

But when Safina got her feet set and attacked, her power was too much for the 28-year-old Czech, ranked No99 in the world. The five-foot, 11-inch (1.82m) Safina also showed off some quickness, tracking down a number of those drop shots from Sromova.

Safina closed out the match with a blistering inside-out backhand return winner. This is her seventh win in eight matches on clay after reaching the Rome final last week. Rather quietly, she is putting together one of the better stretches of her young career.

"When I am confident, I feel more calm on the court," she explained. "I can control more what I am doing. I'm controlling the match."

Safina will continue on in Paris without the shadow cast by her big brother. Marat Safin was ousted Tuesday by 9th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez. The 20-year-old admits it was not easy following in Marat's footsteps.

"The beginning it was really tough for me, you know. It was always like 'sister of Marat'," Safina said. "I was sometimes trying for do too much. But then I relax. I am what I am. I am Dinara."

In the third round, Safina will play No33 Katarina Srebotnik, a straight set winner Wednesday over American Ashley Harkleroad. They have played five previous times with Safina claiming the last four, most recently in Antwerp earlier this year.

Can someone please tell me what the furthest Dina has gone in a GS was and where?

I saw her play for the first time in ages, in Rome...she's finally growing into her body, her movement is soo much better than what it used to be, and she plays her dtl backhands JUST like marat :D

I really hope she's going to win that third match, it would be really great for her and she deserves it a lot with all of the good results she had lately! But Srebotnik can be a dangerous player because, even she doesn't have a lot of power, her slice with the backhand can really be annoying and she often comes to the net so Dina has to be really focus and agressive but i trust her! She seems so calm and dtermined that i'm sure she's gonna make it!

Paris - Dinara Safina grew up overshadowed by her older brother, Marat Safin, but now she's finally making a name for herself. Safina beat Hana Sromova 6-0, 6-2 yesterday to move into the third round of the French Open for the first time.

"It was always like, 'sister of Marat.' And I wanted to prove that I can also play tennis," Safina said. "I was sometimes trying to do too much. But then I relax. I am what I am. I am Dinara."

En route to winning the Australian Open in 2005, Safin told the media that his sister would have to get into better shape if she was going to make it on the WTA Tour. Safina said her brother didn't just pass that message along to the media.

"He told me," said Safina, "but I also know that I had to be in much better shape to play against top players. I had to be much fitter. I'm working on it, and I'm still working on it."

This year, Safina lost in the final at the Italian Open to Martina Hingis before heading to Roland Garros. She also reached the semifinals at the Gold Coast tournament in Australia, and the quarterfinals at Paris, Antwerp, Indian Wells, Charleston and Berlin. Now, for the first time in her career, Safina has outlasted her brother at a Grand Slam tournament.

The unseeded Safin is coming off a long hiatus because of a left knee injury. He lost to ninth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the first round and skipped a mandatory post-match press conference. "I watched three sets," Safina said. "And (after the) third set, I left for dinner, so I didn't watch the fourth."
