oh and ulrike, maria just got to the FO quarters last year. had to face justine too early :o. anyway, but she has reached the quarters for the last two years so her clay game is slightly underestimated. but yeah she's def no justine on clay. it was no surprise that she didnt sign on for this tie. it was always gonna be played on clay.

well Maria probably would have done more damage...i dunno...but i really think it's too much pressure for her to be playing her first ever fedcup match on clay. a lot has already been made about Maria and her playing fedcup for Russia. I would just assume and do understand that a player of her level and popularity would want to have the upperhand in her fedcup debut. there's a lot at stake for her. in other words, she has to win i think especially since she would have been leading a team who has been the champions for the last 2 years. if this tie had been on hard or grass, she'd probably be there. oh well...why did it have to be against belgium right away dammit? :lol:

i have faith in lena though. she'll find a way to lead her team to victory. it will also be a good chance for dinara and kirilenko to step up. plus nadia is good on clay. just needs to have her head screwed on right. :)

I agree with her being underestimated, btw. It's true, she has no "touch" at the net, her volleys make me :bolt: and I've seen maybe 3 succesfull dropshots (fine, I'm overdoing it :p ) but she has a good serve and backhand and if pounding away from the baseline like she does gets you a Grand Slam and the number one spot it says more about the state of women's tennis than her game.

Congratulations! I saw tennis from Amelia island once, I think it must be the only tournament where you can watch tennis in the shade. There must have been a big tree on the site before they built the court and seating and instead of cutting the tree down they built the seating around the tree. It looked really inviting to sit in dappled shade watching tennis instead of blistering sunshine.
