I just "discovered" that we so far did not have a real chat thread for Thomas, so here it is ;)

We should discuss everything between sky and earth here and of course, a lot Thomas and tennis

But what kind of thread should it be? Should I teach you words/sentences or do you want to ask about words? What do you think?

Biofile: The Thomas Johansson Interview
06/17/2005

Thomas Johansson's first tennis memory came courtesy of Donald Duck, but the Swede with the solid all-around game is hardly a cartoon character on court.

The 30-year-old Swede enters Wimbledon on Monday coming off a semifinal performance at Queen's Club. The 12th-seeded Johansson, who resides in the softest section of the draw, could reach the second week.

Stockholm was stomping when Johansson put his foot down with finality today last October. Winless in his prior six meetings with Andre Agassi, the unseeded Swede overcame a one-set deficit to topple the top-seeded Agassi, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) and win his second career Stockholm Open. Johansson never trailed in the third-set tiebreak, reaching match point at 6-3. Agassi drilled a passing shot winner to save one match point. As the crowd stomped its feet and clapped in unison, Johansson calmly stepped up to serve and delivered an ace down the middle to capture the tournament title for the first time since 2000.

"This was probably my best match ever," said Johansson, who has won eight career championships. "I can't remember when I played this well. Even if I had lost, I would have said this was one of my best matches."

Scoring tournament victories over Xavier Malisse, compatriot Robin Soderling, Andrei Pavel and Michael Ryderstedt to reach the final, Johansson won all five tiebreak sets he played during the week.

Johansson's greatest career victory came in 2002 when the 16th-seeded Swede upset Marat Safin, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(4) in the Australian Open final to become the first Swede since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win the Australian Open and the second-lowest seed in history to claim the championship. The self-effacing Johansson, widely respected for his sportsmanship and competitivness, celebrated that monumental victory in a Melbourne bar with a throng of enthusiastic Swedish fans.

Status: 2002 Australian Open champion.

Height: 5-foot-11 Weight: 165 pounds.

Born On: March 24th, 1975 in Linkoping, Sweden.

Childhood Hero: "Mats Wilander."

Hobbies/Interests: "I really like to play golf. I really like to go to the movies. I really like to go and watch concerts, ice hockey games. And spend time with my friends, of course."

Early Tennis Memory: "I played a tournament called Donald Duck Cup. It's very famous in Sweden. It's like the first big one that you play. I think I was eight or nine. And I played a guy that was four years older than me, and he was a top-seeded guy. So my dad said, If you get a game from this guy, I'll buy you ice cream. And it was like 6-0 and 4-0 and then I got the first game. So that was good."

Favorite Movies: "Would be...I really like Scent of a Woman, Good Will Hunting, Shawshank Redemption is probably the number one."

Musical Tastes: "I really like U2, Depeche Mode and a Swedish group called Kent."

Pre-Match Feeling: "Just try to focus on my game. That's the most important thing. And then it doesn't really matter who you play — it's just try to go out there and do your best. And try to focus on your strokes."

Greatest Sports Moment: "When I won Australian Open 2002 (vs. Safin 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6). (What moment in particular? Match point?) Match point was very strange. It was a lob that went over me that I thought for sure was gonna go in. It went like 5 centimeters out. And then, of course, the celebration in the evening with all the Swedish fans. It was in a bar — Lotus, in Melbourne. That was a thing that I'm probably not going to experience again."

Most Painful Moment: "Was when I decided to have an operation on my left knee. That was February 2003. After that, I did not think I was gonna be able to come back, 'cause it hurt a lot. And it took a while before I could even walk on my knee. So that was very tough."

Favorite Meal: "I really like, of course, Swedish meatballs. But I really like Japanese and Chinese food."

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: "Haagen Dazs cookies and cream."

Closest Tennis Friends: "I have a good relationship with the Swedes...Enqvist, Magnus Norman, Jonas Bjorkman, Mikael Tillstrom — though he's not playing anymore. Those are probably my best friends."

Funniest Players: "A player that I really liked to watch was (Marcelo) Rios. And Agassi is always a lot of fun to watch. But outside of court, all the guys have different humors. Rios...I think he was one of the best players, ever. Because I remember one year when he was gonna play Thomas Muster in Rome. And I saw the press conference before the match. And they asked Rios, How are you gonna be able to beat Muster, because he only had lost one or two matches on clay so far. And Rios said [smiles], The guy should be happy if he gets like a couple of games. And he went out there the next day and killed (Muster). 1 and 2. And that's, for me, unbelievable. I really like to watch him. I didn't like to play him though. But I really liked to watch him. (Why? Why was he so hard to play?) He could make you feel like it was the first time you were standing on a tennis court, you know [smiles]? So, I hated to play him. You could get killed by him easily, 1 and 1 or something like that. And you could have played a good match, you know [smiles]?"

Toughest Competitors: "Well, I haven't been able yet to beat Federer. I've played him, I don't know, seven or eight times. And Agassi is very tough."

Favorite Vacation Spot: "South Africa."

Funny Tennis Memory: "A lot of things made me laugh. In Davis Cup we have a lot of fun together. I think that's the most fun you have in the year, when you go out with your friends and you're trying to compete for your own country. We have a lot of fun when we're traveling together."

People Qualities Most Admired: "Honesty. I really like guys that are down-to-earth. Not arrogant. And nice people, of course."

Oh Birte, here's one to start... how do you pronounce the Swedish name Solveig? I was reading another Henning Mankell book and came across that name (i've seen it before, but never knew how to pronounce it).
That name isn't Swedish. It's Norwegian. Here are GWH's explanations about where it comes from. Thanks to him. :)
It was the name of the heroine of the Norwegian play "Peer Gynt" written by Ibsen. The funny thing is that, no matter how old that play, it still has some very true things to it.
It comes from Old Norse.

Don't ask me about the pronunciation, only him could help us! ;)

I read an article in the TENNIS magazine today (with nadal on the cover), it's about what other ATP players think of Hewitt's on court attitude, the loud Fanatics and the come-ons etc... they actually interviewed ToJo :) this is what he said (as far as I can remember, cos I didn't actually buy the mag):

"Of course the Fanatics help, but Hewitt himself does it on court (the come-ons). I don't think it's a distraction..."

Oh and Birte, how did you learn Swedish? Cos last year I tried, and got to chapter 4 of the grammar book but I just couldn't bring myself to continue! It's hard cos you don't know for sure if you're pronouncing some things correctly etc...

Sommarsverige

Thanks for letting us know about the tennis mag, Margaret

Well, I started to learn Swedish many, many years ago at an evening school (you almost can learn everything at these schools in Germany), but as this was only every week 1 1/2 hour, it took quite long until I really dared to speak Swedish in Sweden. I think I learnt most when I was in Sweden, when you talk to people there.

I can understand that it´s difficult to learn Swedish with such a book. I tried this with spanish and I stopped directly at chapter 1 :( It´s hard to motivate yourself.

There are a few articles on Swedish sites which I don't understand completely but if we're going to take Swedish lessons here, this might be a nice start ;)
I think the general gist of this one is that he played like crap yesterday but learned from it and winning when playing so badly is alway a nice thing. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

This site has a Swedish-English translator which sucks ass, but is better then nothing ;)

Thomas has been talking to Swedish reporters this week; there aren't any interviews on the Wimbledon site but plenty in the Swedish papers :)

From http://www.dn.se

Johansson överlägsen - klar för kvartsfinal

London.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

He played very well against Mirniy, making him run a lot, hitting dropshots and lobs. He says this was one of the best matches he ever played in a Grand Slam.

Thomas is the oldest one of the quarterfinalists, the average is 23,9 :) Nalbandian is very allround but his serve isn't that good. Thomas says he needs to use his backhand and come to the net more often than he usually does because David plays very well from the baseline.

His hay fever has been bothering him because the weather was so warm and humid last week, he woke up in the middle of the night and had trouble breathing. (poor guy, he's allergic to grass  ) But fortunately temperatures have gone down this week.

margaret_gn
06-28-2005, 11:26 AM

Here you go :)
Here is the translation of the main points:

Johansson ready for quarterfinal

Though Thomas is allergical against grass, he likes to play on it a lot.
"But I am not satisfied with this tournament yet", he says.

About the match against Mirnyi Thomas says: " This has been my best GS match in my whole career."

Thomas is older than all the other players left in the single draw of Wimbledon and he is even more than 6 years older than the next oldest, Fernando Gonzalez and Lleyton Hewitt. "I don´t want to talk about it" Thomas says with a smile.

Then he is talking about his next opponent David Nalbandian:"He is an allround player who moves very well.."
"The serve is his weekness, so I have to play agressive in this match. It will be a lot of baseline game, so I have to play backhand and try to play come to the net more often then I used to do."

Last week Thomas had such big allergical problems, that he woke up in the middle of the night and could not breathe.
Now this has become better because of the lower temperatures.
But Johansson is still hot.

So Francine, you were very good with the translation :) The things in between is not really interesting, players he lost to in the past and so on.

Sounds very good, I think, so KOM IGEN THOMAS imorgon :bounce: :yeah:

Thomas Johansson, at 30 years old, is the oldest man left in the men's singles quarter-final line-up. The last time the Swede advanced further than the fourth round in a Grand Slam was in 2002, when he went all the way to win the Australian Open.

In beating Max Mirnyi, who led the ace count of The Championships, in the fourth round, he secured a quarter-final tie against David Nalbandian.

Johansson needed mobility and agility to return Mirnyi's serves and won most of the exhaustive rallies. "It was one of my best matches. I varied my game well, returned and served well and succeeded in my lobs which does not happen every day," he told the Swedish tabloid Expressen.

Johansson has a decent serve and the versatile Swede's all-round game has been consistent this fortnight. At his best, he hits winning shots off both the forehand and backhand, as well as mixing drop shots and accurate lobs.

He is the last Swede to have won a Grand Slam since Stefan Edberg's US Open title in 1992. Returning from a left knee injury in 2004, he quickly clawed his way back into the top 30 in the world, and now ranks at No.22. Johansson's previous best at the All England Club was on his debut in 1996 when he reached the fourth round. He repeated the feat in 2000.

Curiously, one of Johansson's hitting partners is better known for his football skills. Tomas Brolin helped Sweden to a bronze medal in the 1994 World Cup in the USA with his goals. "He is a brilliant fan, and shouts and screams in my support," Johansson told the Swedish paper Kvällsposten. Brolin has been watching all Johansson's matches in The Championships.

His support should be welcome in Johansson's game against Nalbandian. The 23-year-old Argentine is seeded six points below the Swede's rank of 12 but his grass court credentials are impressive. He was the Wimbledon runner-up in 2002 and reached the fourth round in 2003. Last year he was unable to take part because of an injury.

Were Johansson to beat Nalbandian, whom he has never played, either Sebastien Grosjean or Andy Roddick would await in the last hurdle before the Wimbledon final.

Johansson has started the psychological warfare against Nalbandian, the bookies' favourite to win their match. He told Expressen: "If he trained harder, he should comfortably be among the top five in the world."

Asked about how to beat the Argentine, Johansson said: "It will be largely a baseline match. I have to play aggressively and hit the ball properly not to allow him to dictate the match."

There is a very cute article about Thomas and Gisella in Expressen.se today.
I can also translate it later today :)

Hopefully Thomas will be already in the semifinal then ;) Kom igen Thomas :yeah:

26 juni 2005

Bor i Chelsea

Paret spelar tennis ihop ibland.

Is this....Stefan Edberg, 39 has tipped Thomas Johansson to make it to the final?

Thomas Johansson har en otroligt stor potential.

and this...thomas has star potential?

Im just looking at articles in swedish  trying to figure out what they mean

Sommarsverige
06-29-2005, 08:55 PM
Yes, very good Siobhan ;) :bigclap:

The only different thing is that Stefan said Thomas has a big potential (stor = big) :)

The other article is about that Thomas says he likes to relax when he does not have to play, mostly with his girlfriend Gisella and friends, like the former Swedish football player Tomas Brolin. He says that it is hard for the body to play on grass.
Then he says that Gisella is always right out and says directly after a match what she was thinking about it.

Thomas and Gisella stay at a friends house in Chelsea and they have their own room and bathroom. Directly next to the house are tennis courts and meadows:
"we used to play frisbee, go and walk a bit and I like to watch the others play tennnis, this is very relaxing."

So Thomas is saying that it is very important for him that Gisella is with him at tournaments all the time and that she is a big help for him.

Gisella says that she now after all the time knows how to handle Thomas after defeats and when to leave him alone.
When they are at tournaments, it is always Thomas who decides the food: "We eat a lot of indian, chinese and mexican food which we order to the hotel. We do not eat that much italian food like many people think," Thomas says.

Gisella is always in the crowd supporting Thomas when he has to play and Thomas does not only get comments from his coach after the match.
"I always hear from Gisella what was good and bad in the match afterwards" Thomas says. "I think he played very well against Mirnyi" Gisella says.

Thomas and Gisella play a lot of tennis together. Some time ago Thomas was betting that he can beat Gisella with a pan, but this match did not happen yet. "I guess he did not find the right pan yet" Gisella says and laughs.

Very cute interview I think :worship:

So here´s the translation of the main points:

Sjarapove is not goodlooking

Everyone is talking about Maria Sjarapova. But when Sportbladet meets Thomas Johansson one hour after he reached the quartelfinal at Wimbledon and has to answer questions about his game, the next matches... and Maria Sjarapova.
"No, I don´t think she is that goodlooking in reality. But she always looks very good on photos" he says.

Q: What are you doing in the evenings when you don´t have to play?
T: I think it is very nice to stay how we stay. We stay at close friends and this is very relaxing. We are together with them, watch movies, play games and we eat.

Q: I have read that Sjarapova prepares everything before a match exactly like she did last year when she won. Do you also have these kind of things you have to do so everything goes well?
T: Yes, I am also a bit superstitious. I always use the same shower, this is a thing which most of the players do. And I also have the same place in the locker room.

Q: To talk about Sjarapova. Do you think she is that goodlooking like everyone says?
T: No, I don´t think she is that goodlooking in reality. I often see her in the players restaurants for example and so on. But she is very goodlooking on photos. On some photos I have seen of her she is very, very goodlooking.

Q: Is Wimbledon the biggest tournament for you?
T: Yes, it is. Also because there is so much history about this tournament. It is very special in many ways. For example the US Open are very loud and hectical. But here, everything is calm. I know during my 1st match here some Swedish guys started singing, they almost had to leave the crowd.

Q: You are 30 years old and are the oldest of the other players who are left in the tournament. Did you already think about what you will do after your active tennis carrier?
T: Difficult question. I hope that I can play 3 to 5 more years. But only if I stay healty, still think it is a lot of fun to play and if I can still play on the top."

These are the main points from the interview, also everything about the discussion about Sjarapova is included in the translating.
The other content is a lot about his game, what he thinks about Federer, his next opponent Nalbandian and so on.
Hope it is okay that I only translated parts :) But I have translated the most interesting parts...

I am just angry on the stupid GM threads  There are so many threads I really hate in GM (especially all the Guille Coria hate threads...), and I sometimes have the feeling the people there don´t have other things to do :(
I was very near to write something about this Toker thing, but I did not want to get attacked by them, so also in this case it is better to ignore this thread...

But as you say, they did not even quote correctly was Thomas was saying...very bad!

Francine
07-18-2005, 10:47 PM
Most people in the GM thread know that he was misquoted, there were one or two Sharapova fans who were up in arms immediately but that had nothing to do with Thomas.

I think it's a good publicity stunt ;)

Best nights sleep last night...i had a thomas dream :yippee:

My Thomas dream…

I saw him in playing his match somewhere and me and my friend Louise sat on a bench next to his chair and he looked over and recognised me. Then I had to go and do something and came back and saw a big queue of people waiting for his autograph on the stairs. He again looked over at me and I said ‘hey thomas’ and he said ‘hi’ and I said ‘do u recognise me’ and he said ‘yeah how are you’ and then the people waiting for autos disappeared and I walked with him to the lifts. Then I said ‘Thomas can I ask you something’ and he said ‘sure’ *looking interested* and I asked him why he goes to the loo after warm up but before a match like he did at Wimbledon and I cant remember what he said but I know it didn’t make sense!! (we got in a lift and I NEVER get in lifts so he must have cured my fear :o  or distracted me ;))

Then we walked to a supermarket talking and then he went to look at frozen vegetables and I waited at another aisle for ages. So I went over to see him and said ‘am I annoying you’ and he said ‘yes’ so I was like ‘oh ok I’ll leave you then bye’

I cant remember if he said anything else but he had his short hair and was wearing non tennisy clothes

Ok, this is a special msg for anybody interested...Denaon is trying to create a new game, starting with the USO. It's called PBP (Pick Best Performance). You can find all the rules here. And if ppl sign up rather fast, the game will be able to start next week. Come and join us! :p

guys... totally off-tennis-topic. but i'm applying to go on an exchange to Uppsala Uni in Sweden for next year, and i have to do this 'statement of purpose' which is basically an essay on why I want to go to sweden and Uppsala. I need help! If you can help me come up with a few reasons why Sweden is such a great country to choose for the exchange I'd be most most grateful :D (cos I can't just say that they have the greatest tennis players now can I ;) )

I'm on exchange in Ireland now, for a full year :) No tennis tourneys in Ireland though :bigcry:

Anywayzzzz, Sweden, well I think the quality of the universities there is quite good, better than say, Spain or Italy. I'll try to come up with other things :)

Sommarsverige
09-21-2005, 09:27 PM
Margaret, what kind of reasons are you looking for?

The things that come to my mind:

- it´s a great country with beautiful landscape
- people are very friendly
- the unis have a high standard (as far as I know)
- Uppsala is one of the most famous unis in Sweden
- you would like to learn swedish...

Hope this can help a bit, maybe it´s not that good, but I can´t come on more things right now...

thanks for the inputs so far guys :)

Well the questions say:
1. What are your reasons for pursuing an exchange experience?
2. How does an exchange experience fit in with your academic and career goals?
3. Highlight the key criteria that drew you to your first preference institution.
4. Highlight briefly the reasons behind the selection of your second and third preferences. (I put Lund second and Malmo third)
5. What challenges do you think you will face? Outline briefly the strategies you can employ to overcome these.
6. What contacts have you had with cultural groups other than your own? Highlight any involvement in multicultural organisations, etc.
7. When you are on exchange, you are an ambassador for the University of Sydney and for AUstralia. What does that mean to you?
8. Do you have other comments to add in support of your application?

it's like a job interview!

Siobhan, how's uni going so far? enjoying it?

Francine, did you have to do this kind of thing when you applied? What were your answers?

Birte thanks for the ideas :) I'll probably need more to fill 2 A4 pages though...

there's about 10 people applying for Swedish unis but whether or not i get in depends on how many people from Sweden want to come to Sydney... then they choose based on our grades, then the 'essay'. What uni are you at Francine?

And also does anyone know of any Swedish authors who write smaller/thinner books than Henning Mankell? Not kids books but sort of young adult type. My friend got intimidated by the thickness of Mankell's books!

Oh wow! :) I know, it's a fantastic subject to study isn't it? (well, we think so anyway - my friends don't think much of it but I don't care hehe). I live in the UK, so I don't have to worry about huge amounts of debt, I think it's really terrible that you'd be charged $40000 a year!

Thanks - I really hope they accept me once I've completed my BA. I know I'm looking ahead a little bit (3 years ahead, lol) but I've already emailed the tutors at Linkoping lol. :)
I'm going to be studying History @ Cambridge. The course is so varied, I can specialise pretty early on. In my first year, I'm taking a paper in early european history, and that encompasses some Scandinavian History, yay.

I checked out Uppsala too, it looks great - good luck with getting the place! When will you know for sure? & what will you be covering there?

I'll just be doing my maths subjects which will be credited towards my degree here :) it's only for 6 months.

Below 'Senaste video' to the right
click on 'Titelförsvararen hade problem i Stockholm Open' with a camera icon to the left.

More glorious Swedish for your pleasure :D and some footage from ToJo's match with Eleskovic.

:topic: Just want to make some promotion for a fun tennis game which Elikian (also from MTF) runs, the ATP Manager Game 2006!
This is the link: http://members.home.nl/elikian/UK/

In this game, you get a special amount every week and from this money you can buy the players you like for the tournaments running in that week.
You always have to send in your players until tuesday, 11 p.m. (in the evening)
From the site above, you download an excel sheet, and then the players from every week together with the money they cost will appear on it (but it should work without excel as well).

For more questions you can also check the forum for the ATP Manager game:
http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=64,
ask Elikian directly or you can ask me!

A lot of MTF people participate already :yeah:

:wavey: Birte, it was very nice to meet you today! I hope you didn't get too wet from the rain, I made my train by 1 minute so I was lucky! Enjoy the rest of your time here in Sweden and drop by at Uppsala if you get time!

Hope to meet you again at a tournament somewhere hopefully in Australia someday!
Margaret :)

Thanks Margaret :) I also enjoyed it a lot that we finally met eachother ;)
I had to stay at that house entrance yesterday quite long time, but then I got home dry!

Right now I am sitting in an Internet Cafe at Kulturhuset, but I have to go soon to meet my friends again !
Talk more when I am back in Hamburg :wavey:

Does anyone know when Thomas and his wife expect the baby?
In September or October?

I think their baby is due on October 14th, during Stockholm.

It's in this article: http://expressen.se/index.jsp?a=670536

Thanks. That's not the best week. I still hoped he would play in Stockholm because he is on the list.

Birte can you please translate the bold part? :worship:

I think he will play in Stockholm, I translated the article a few weeks ago and in the last part he says he's planning to play. He says he will leave in the middle of a match if he needs to :)

Yeah, of course :)
I plan to play Stockholm Open. Gisella will give birth to our child in Stockholm, but I have to see if I maybe have to run away during a match. Maybe I will play a smaller tournament in Europe before, but it depends on how Gisella feels.

Peggy, I am quite sure Thomas will play if the baby isn´t born before Stockholm!
