Vamos Rafa anyways!!! Honestly... I hope he won't! I don't want him to miss Rosmalen  Selfish maybe, but so far my fav player, or one of my fav players, withdrew from tournaments that I was going to! I was hoping that wouldn't happen this time

I think doubles are too much, too. But a reporter said, that his trainer thinks also, that he should only concentrate on singles, but Rafa is so motivated and loves to playing doubles.

i'm worry bout rafa burning out too.

how many pre-wimbledon warm-up tournament will there be??

rafa may just want to ensure he has enough practise going wimbledon, the one he dreams of winning someday...

...with wimbledon just ard the corner...

but on the bright side, grass can't be more physically demanding than clay, right??

Neely
06-06-2005, 05:31 PM
The OOP for Tuesday is not yet out but they said on TV that Nadal is going to get a Wednesday start for his first round, so at least he has as much time as possible between RG and Halle.

wonder what color he'll wear in the grass season, and then wimbledon.

what did he wear during last year wimbledon? heard that the dress code there is more strict.

~EMiLiTA~
06-07-2005, 06:28 AM

I think the reason why he's playing both singles and doubles and every week on grass is because he knows he's not that good on it and may not go far in the tournaments and wants as much practice as possible for Wimbly? Anyway Vamos Rafa!

and here is the interview...

Interview with Rafael Nadal

Dienstag, 07.06.2005

Press-Conference with Rafael Nadal (ESP)

? It's a very big challenge to switch from clay to grass in about three days. How do you deal with it?

! Yes, it's a big change. I only have one day for that. Some things are really different, for example on clay I often play topspin, on grass this is a little bit more difficult. To change all this in only one day is not easy. But this is an important tournament for me, and I will try to play my best tennis tomorrow. I know it'll be difficult.

? You like playing on grass?

! Yes, I love playing on grass. I was playing on grass for two years: In Wimbledon I lost the junior-semi-final and the next year in third round with the professionals. I like it a lot, I know it's not my best surface, but it makes fun playing on it.

? Have you already thought about a semi-final with Roger Federer here?

! No, I've not thought about this. I only think about the match tomorrow. Every match is very difficult, on grass, on clay, on hard-court, and I know that. To play against Federer I need three matches, and this is very difficult.

? Are you mentally and physically tired after the French Open?

! I really don't know, but it could be. But I'm happy having won in Paris and I have enough confidence to play well here. This is an important tournament for me.

? How does it feel to fight head-to-head against Roger Federer for the ATP number one?

! It's unbelievable for me. I just played my best tennis, I won all the matches on clay, so I could tie with Roger. He's one of the best players in history, but I know that the state of number one is really possible for me now.

? Is playing well on grass really important for you?

! On grass there is one of the best tournaments in the world: Wimbledon. Also the two weeks before are important, because there is only one month in the year playing grass, and this month means a lot of points. Besides, I'm a young player, 19 years old, I want to improve on every surface. For me grass is a good surface, it's not my best, but I want to improve. That's why I also play doubles here in Halle.

? How was your welcome here in Halle?

! Great, really. Everybody is very friendly, the tournament is well organized. I actually planned already to come last year, but I had some problems with my knee. It's good to be finally here now.

The Interview...

Interview with Rafael Nadal
Mittwoch, 08.06.2005

Press-Conference with Rafael Nadal (ESP) after his defeat against Alexander Waske (GER) in the first round.

? What is your view on the match against Waske?

! In the beginning I took profit from some of his mistakes, but also I had a good start. I took my chances, and I also had my chances in the third but couldn't finally convert them. Besides, I felt a little bit tired. My physical condition was not as good as I would like it.

? Will this affect your preparation for Wimbledon?

! This is an important tournament, still I'm satisfied to get one match on grass. Every match is a learning experience even if you lose. Today I already felt much better than in yesterday's practice session. In the duration of the match I got some heavy physical problems, so that I even thought to retire.

? How difficult was it to get in a rhythm on grass?

! Yes, it was difficult, mostly because he was coming to the net all the time. Besides, I played a horrible game at 6:5 in the second set. My physical condition was a problem, I was a little bit late in some rallies, and in my tennis the fitness is very important. After these 15 challenging days in Paris it was not easy to hold concentration. I began well, but then I struggled a little bit mentally.

? Do you have any problems with the expectation after your French Open victory?

! No, I feel that I'm the same now. I only won a tournament, not more. And I cannot expect to come to Halle and win here easily. This is my first opening defeat this year, this change from clay to grass is the biggest challenge in the season.

? How is your level of confidence going into Wimbledon?

! I think I'll be prepared for Wimbledon. I know, it's not my best surface, but I'll try my best. I will arrive in Wimbledon five days before the start of the tournament to have good training sessions. Now I will have two or three days off to recover, after that I will concentrate to improve my serve and my game at the net.

? Are you going to play the doubles now?

! No, I have to take care, I have some problems with one fingers of my left and my right thigh. So I decided not to play doubles.

Good article that shows that Rafa is approaching Wimbledon with a good attitude:

Nadal out to learn from Wimbledon experience
Fri Jun 10, 2005 08:26 AM ET

By Simon Baskett
MADRID (Reuters) - French Open champion Rafael Nadal's main aim at Wimbledon is to enjoy himself and gain more experience on grass rather than try and win the tournament.

"I'm conscious that on clay and hard courts I can manage pretty well, but indoors and on grass I have to improve a lot if I want to achieve good results," the 19-year-old Spaniard told a news conference in Madrid on Friday.

"I'm going to go to Wimbledon to enjoy myself and do my best, but I know that it's a very tough tournament and it isn't the best surface for me.

"My intention is to go there and learn so that one day I'll be able to do something big there."

Nadal, who put together a 24-match winning streak on clay with his triumph at Roland Garros last weekend, lost his first outing on grass when he fell to Alexander Waske in the opening round of the Halle Open in Germany on Wednesday.

But the powerfully built Mallorcan said the defeat could be a blessing in disguise.

"I don't think the defeat will affect my Wimbledon preparations," he said. "I had been playing a lot of pressure games and suffered a drop in tension after the victory in Paris.

"I then only had one day to adapt to the new surface and although I did all I could it wasn't to be. I would have liked to have played another match, but having a few days rest will be good for me too."

"I'm not going to play another tournament before Wimbledon. I need to rest mentally, but I'll go there four days before to make sure I'm prepared."

GOOD YEAR

Looking relaxed and refreshed as he mingled with journalists and gave interviews to local media beside the rooftop pool of a luxury Madrid hotel, Nadal insisted that there was no danger of him losing focus after winning his first grand slam.

"I'm the same person I was six months ago when I hadn't won anything," he said. "Yes, it's been a good year for me, but I'm conscious that only with humility and hard work can I keep winning matches.

"It's only (world number one Roger) Federer who doesn't lose matches and the rest of us aren't like him."

"Things have gone well, but I know that they could go wrong at any time. In tennis there are lot of people all at the same level and I want to keep my feet on the ground so I'll be ready if I do start losing games.

"I've won one grand slam and that's the most important thing and for me Wimbledon will be very difficult. In Spain we don't have grass courts, while Roland Garros is a bit easier because we have clay courts at every club."

Nadal moved up to number three after his victory in Paris and is now tied with Federer in the champions race, but the Spaniard insisted that talk of challenging the Swiss for the top spot in the rankings was premature.

"Of course for all players being number one is an objective, but with the number one we have at the moment that is almost impossible and something very odd would have to happen for anyone to replace him. With Federer at the top being number two is a triumph."

Thank you so much, Clara. :worship:

Fantastic attitude, indeed, from Rafa. It's so refreshing to know a young clay-courter really wants to excel on grass. :yeah:

yeah it is a shame for the Dutchies that he's not going...it's always crap when a good player pulls out of a tourney...

i guess he's in Madrid because there are more facilities to practise there?? there are not many grass courts in Spain so maybe he prefers to be there to prepare?

I think Rafa is in Madrid only for publicity purposes... yes, there aren't many if any real grass courts in Spain... they had some before the DC F in AUS for the guys to practise on... they s get more now.

Rafa always skips the right tourneys and benefits... smart kid!
