Yes, Joachim would be a slight caution on grass and hard court. He entered a few clay tournaments this year, but I don't think he won any. He withdrew from French Open before it began.

Many people say Nadal can't play well on grass or on faster hardcourt, but my sense is telling me, he will be still able to hit all kinds of balls back to you. Roger could have this revenge in again SF.

Stevens point,you are right
Nadal wont just go away, because it´s grass season - he is fast and strong and sure to get many balls back - just not as many.
Nadal didn´t play badly at the Aussi Open - it´s a slow hard court, but still he was not far a way from beating Lleyton.

But then again a few month ago I thought Marat had found something simelar to a brain - didn´t happen - so maybe Nadal is just Muster.

Muster was "clay court King" - when Sampres was "the Emporer"

Good luck Roger :) The best thing for Roger after RG is just to get straight back onto grass. Roger has not lost a grass court match since Wimbledon 2002. Roger has won his last 24 matches on grass and won 62 of his last 67 sets on grass  :worship:

I think Roger has proved that grass is his favourite surface. I do not think there is much technical work that Roger has to peform in his short off-time. He relishes this time of year. I do believe he waits all year for the grass court season. Roger's two losses in the GS were heart-breaking, but he did say that, after last year, his two goals were: Wimbledon and staying number 1. Once Roger sets a goal; he fullfills it. Barring injury, God-forbid, he will not ALLOW anyone to beat him on grass.

Federer and Nadal rivalry to continue in Halle
Sonntag, 05.06.2005

The GERRY WEBER OPEN will be the next stop in the exciting top-spot race between defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer and recently-crowned French Open winner Rafael Nadal. ITF president Francesco Ricci-Bitti believes their rivalry „will mean a golden era for our sport”, while tournament director Ralf Weber looks forward to bringing world-class tennis action to his home town.
“We are very proud to land the two top players of this season,” said Weber. “And in Marat Safin we also present the first Grand Slam Champion of the year. On top of that, all German top players are in the draw, too.” The duel between Federer and Nadal is certain to attract a lot of international interest, especially with a lot of Swiss and Spanish journalists coming to town.
Should everything work to plan, Federer could take revenge for his French Open semi-finals loss as the two could potentially clash in the final four again. “I hope to complete the hat-trick,” two-time defending GERRY WEBER OPEN and Wimbledon winner Federer vowed. “That would be an awesome accomplishment.”
19-year-old Nadal, however, has different plans. “Winning Halle would be great,” stated Nadal. “Unlike the French Open, triumphing at Wimbledon would be something no Spaniard has ever accomplished in modern tennis. The GERRY WEBER OPEN are a major tournament and a very important tune-up so I´d love to pick up speed for a successful Wimbledon run in Halle. I definitely want to win.” (Picture: pmk)

Roger better and I think will play more grass court tennis (serve and volley and chip and charge) than he ever has. I hope it's a return to 2003 when he mostly did it and I hope he keeps doing more of that kind of play during the summer hardcourt season too. Roger didn't use enough of his arsenal at RG during the Nadal match. I hope he learned a very important lesson about not limiting yourself.

Not that I am not confident of his baseline game giving him wins over most of the tour including Nadal on grass but he needs to mix it up more especially on their serve. I want to see Roche's work with Roger at hand here this week.

Federer seeks GERRY WEBER OPEN hattrick
Montag, 06.06.2005

World number one Roger Federer hopes the GERRY WEBER OPEN will give him a confidence booster ahead of Wimbledon. “The decisive time of the season is about to start,” Federer said at a crowded press conference in Halle. “This tournament is very important for me. I hope to win it again to get in good shape for Wimbledon. I need to be at the top of my game to defend my title in England and also finish the year as the top-ranked player.”
Federer, despite his semi-finals exit at Roland Garros, was pleased with his performance at the French Open. “I have never reached the semi-finals in Paris so I was very happy. The loss against Nadal didn´t mean the end of the world for me.” Federer hopes Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal “stays in the tournament long enough” to potentially meet in the semi-finals”.
“I will have revenge on my mind and I do fancy my chances on grass,” said Federer. “I´m more of a favourite on this surface because my game is suited for grass.” Federer was full of praise for the 19-year-old Nadal. “I was impressed by the way he shook off the pressure at the French Open,” said Federer. “It´s good for the sport of tennis that he won the tournament. There is enough pepper in tennis at the moment.”
Before he crosses Nadal´s path again, Federer has a first-round clash with Sweden´s Robin Soederling ahead. “That will be tough – he will be no push-over.” Federer considers Andy Roddick, Sebastien Grosjean and Lleyton Hewitt as favourites to win Wimbledon “due to their experience”. “But Tim Henman is always a favourite in that tournament,” stated Federer.
Federer believes “a new breed of young players” is out to make some noise on the tour. “Players like Nadal, Richard Gasquet or Tomas Berdych just live their dream. They have nothing to lose and play with a lot of energy. “But it will be tough for them to supplant me from the top spot,” he added with a smile. (picture:pmk)

Roger played every shluggish - too many short, easy to attack balls from him - it felt like you wanted to kick him at times and Soderline was serving like no tomorrow and Roger just wasn´t.
Looked more like the semis in Paris - Roger seams somewhat subdued, but he was in good spirtis when he talk to Boris - he might be more confident in the next match.Isn´t bad that he plays doubles either - all the practice he can get!

Eva - one of Roger balls went long, but wasn´t called out,but Soderline stoped to play and the Ref called it out - apperently Roger felt Soderline should not have stoped playing until the ball WAS called out by the Ref.Roger also demeaned, that the Ref would look for the mark, because he thought it was in - now that makes no sence - does it - that Soderline stopped playing is an other issue and Roger said after the match,he still isn´t satisfied, with how this was handled - I didn´t see that piont beeing played ,because I was posting the very moment :(

Rogi barely scraped through this round but at least he made the second rd! Phew!

Now to face Mayer... anyone is dangerous these days and THEY have no pressure whatsoever.

Rogi's arguing more and more these days and it doesn't look good... he's letting things bug him... he needs to focus and block out the external crapola.

Thanks for this - we're getting no coverage of Halle here in the UK. Only live scores on the Net which I follow when I'm at work. Nearly had heart failure when I saw he'd lost the 1st set on a tiebreaker + it was real close in the 2nd. Then had to go to a meeting for over an hour and was almost too scared to pull up the scores when I got back! Think I will arrange some more meetings at the same time as his matches - his current form is just no good for the blood pressure!

Silvy, now I can answer your question. Tony is in Halle with Roger!!! You can see him in the highlights I posted above.
YES! I saw the match we had coverage! Incredible! I set the vcr and the match finished 1 minute and 30 seconds Before the tape ended.
I saw Tony. I guess Roger asked him to be with him the previous weeks of wimbledon... And he agreed, maybe Tony is enjoying the time on tour. I also saw mirka talking NON stop with Tony at the beginning and that point all people talk about. I never saw Roger like this like a statue... I read later Nalbandian had a similar attitude ( no idea the reasons) and umpire game 2 point to the oponent. Lucky Roger but .,.. gotta say I thought the sweidh stopped the point. And that was what roger was saying. I also hated the umpeire answer,,,, this is not clay roger.. HEy c mon roger won this tournament 2 times----- HE KNOWS its not clay!.
Anyway.. He won but he will need to make lots of efforts to be the king of grass this year. Hope hell be more solid and his forehand works well next match. Florian ... i saw him playing on clay and is not that bad..... so... hope our roger get used to grass!

It is really surprising for me that an unbeatable and best player on clay is already out on grass. Does surface affect the top 3 players that much!!?

Steven, I will tell you what I said on the GM before. Nadal will not win a title off clay this year. Miami was a great run but that is a slower hardcourt surface. The summer hardcourt season is too fast for him especially Cincy and USO and he won't do shit at Canada because he will likely be playing more clay after Wimbly.

Nadal's problem on the faster surfaces are that his skills are not adaptable. His FH takes too much swing and he isn't as good at hitting it flat as he is with his normal heavy topspin shot which will serve him no good on grass or the faster surfaces. He stands super far back like a pussy on the return because he thinks it's dodgeball and not tennis. His serve is another issue. His BH is very good because it is a short swing and he can hit it flat very well. Nadal will have to work very hard for his wins on the other surfaces and his grinder like movement will hurt him on the hardcourts because he moves fast but not beautifully thus his cramping issues will return like they did at Oz and Miami final. Nadal has a lot of work to do but he could be number 2 or 3 this year with his clay resume alone.

Thank you very much for your explanation, Dirk. :) So, Nadal's style is basically only suited for clay. I kind of knew it, but I didn't expect it to be such a big difference between clay and grass as you and other people say. It is also true that Nadal didn't have enough preparations (probably non) for this tournament, so, this could be also a reason of his early loss today. Now that he has time to get prepared for Wimbledon, he might come to London and surprise us. I just can't underestimate him on other surfaces as well, other than clay. If he keeps losing in early stages the rest of the year, then I will know for sure that he is only superb on clay. But, he is still young and energetic, he might be able to adjust himself to other surfaces quicker than people think. Anyway, the loss of Nadal who had dominated the tour more than Roger the last couple of months simply surprised me today. I have too less knowledge to judge his skills, so I have to see how Nadal is playing during the rest of the season to be able to say such intelligent things like you :worship: .

Dirk says it was a slower surface in Miami that he could reach the final there.

Rogifan, if Nadal proves me wrong this year then I will change my view but despite his Miami run, I don't see Nadal becoming a consistent hardcourt player yet and his physical techinque along with all that grinding will net some injuries sadly. I would follow him cautiously off the clay. I don't want to short change him because he is the best claycourter and deserved all of his success.

He will have more time to prepare but I don't see him making the second week of Wimbledon. The surface just doesn't suit him. It is too fast and will be fast like it was in the old days now due to them opening up the balls before the matches like they said they would this year. He will have to make changes yes but also remember that he must do them well enough to compete with the best. Those are too big IFs. I don't see it happening this year. Rebound Ace including Oz he could contend for possibly and events like Miami but the 2nd half of the year doesn't suit his game. Had Roger used the gameplan Waske used (grass court plan) he probably would have won that semi. I hope Roger learned his lesson and would have changed his tactics more in that match. Roger went in there trying to adapt to him instead of forcing Nadal to adapt to his style of grass court play. Roger blew it and played a messy match due to Nadal's style. Roger payed for his iffiness and I hope we won't see that kind of form and lack of intelligence from Roger again this year.

Dirk

Also don't forget that Roger has won titles on indoors, hardcourts and clay this year. Nadal has only won on clay, still it was a pretty damn huge sweep.

Phew! Much more comfortable win than Tuesday!!

In the middle of the 2nd set, Roger complained that the ball was too soft. The umpire checked the ball and admitted also that the ball was too soft. The umpire took the ball and put it into his pocked, but the play wasn't repeated. So, it wasn't a big problem, I assume. Was it only that ball that was too soft, or all the balls at Gerry Weber Open are so??
