Well, because Gael Monfils ended up getting directly into the MD at Queens, James was given his WC!!!!!!!! So he doesn't have to qualify! YIPPEE!!!!!

Go James, have a great grass season and get your bum into the top 100!

Puerta, James Blake's original first round opponent at Queen's Club, has supposedly withdrawn. Depending when he withdrew, he will be replaced either by new #17 seed Xavier Malisse or a lucky loser (possibly Jeff Morrison):

I believe that Monday's OP came out before the RG final even ended, which means that Puerta could not have withdrawn before the OP was released. Isn't the rule that if the player withdraws after the OP was released, the seeds are not jiggled around and the LL will go right into Puerta's spot? I mean, the draw has not been updated on the ATP site yet, and Malisse/Lee are the first match up. That would be very cruel of the tourney to change that match at this point. Do you know the actual rule on this?

Well, I've been out of touch this weekend, so I am VERY THRILLED to see that James got into Queens! This is excellent, and JJ I am so glad that you got to speak with him (envy, envy, envy) and see him play. Keep those reports coming and give James our very best wishes. :D

ATP Official Rulebook:

Any vacancy created by the withdrawal of a seed, after the draw has been made but prior to the release of the Order of Play for the first day of main draw, shall be filled according to the procedures described under vacancies. As I stated earlier, it will depend on the exact time that Puerta's withdrawal was received. If he gave his withdrawal to anyone other than the ATP supervisor on site at Queen's Club, the OOP could have been made unknowingly after his withdrawal had been accepted. That would be very cruel of the tourney to change that match at this point. But it would also be unfair to Malisse to deny him a seed if the rules entitle him to one.

but what I am saying is that if the OP came out before the RG final was over (which it did), he COULDN'T have withdrawn yet, because of the other stupid rule about not being able to withdraw from one tournament while you are still playing in another. This is the rule, correct? So he had to have withdrawn after the OP came out.

This is the rule, correct? There is a such a provision regarding ATP & challenger tournaments, but no specific provision (in either the ATP or Grand Slam handbook) when one of the tournaments in question is a Grand Slam. Obviously he will be sanctioned by the ATP for a late withdrawal (unless he goes to Queen's Club to be examined by the ATP physician).

I'm just covering the two options since there have been cases in the past when a player withdrew before the draw was made or before play started & for whatever reason (time differences, etc.) the ATP supervisor on-site didn't get the message in time & went ahead with the draw/seeding/OOP & matches/opponents didn't get correctly sorted out until the next morning right before players were to go on court. That's what happens sometimes when there are four ATP offices in four different time zones (plus other ATP officials in transit).

watched the end of the 2nd and the whole of the 3rd set of his match with jeff, was a very tight match was funny too lots of banter between them.
spoke to jeff afterwards and aske dhim what he was doing next week he said he doesn't know if he's going to nottingham roehampton or just to wimbly bless him he doesn't have a clue!

spoke to james afterwards told him i'd said he'd win it and he said "yeps you did thanks" hehe bless! then this guy said to him "i saw you beat so and so (i forgot who he said now) in milwaukee last year" james replied " no you didn't" the guy was very adamant "no i did really" james replied "no you saw my brother i've never played milwaukee" the guy looked at him and said "you have a brother?" so i asked james how thomas was and he said "see she knows" lmao it was funny :)

He's 111 this week, so I would guess that he has enough points to pass those guys ahead of him. The point totals are all pretty close in that group.

Deboogle!.
06-08-2005, 06:26 PM
Yes, he should.... I just don't feel like doing the actual math:p, so I'll just take a guess that he should move into the high 90s, depending on what he does the rest of the week and what those guys do ;)

Oh James....

Okay, this where he needs to not be so 'happy go lucky' about matches with his new attitude and all. He needed to play that TB like his life depended on it. Wonder what Eowyn will have to say, if she was able to see any of this match. I think he will have enough points to get into the Top 100 now, so that's good. If he has to play qualies on Monday, he will be one of the high seeds. :D

Deboogle!.
06-09-2005, 07:09 PM
Yea it should still be enough for the top 100, but a win today would've put him closer to 90, plus done worlds for his confidence to beat a top grass player. just... :( he's gotta get through these matches - this is too many he's lost in a third set TB.

Good luck James!I guess that explains why he didn't try to qualify at s'Hertogenbosch or Nottingham; both had really weak qualifying draws due to most players between #105-205 going to Wimbledon qualifying.

http://www.atptennis.com/en/newsandscores/news/2005/Insider_0610.asp->> – BLAKE'S COMEBACK CELEBRATED … The incredible challenges faced by JAMES BLAKE over the past 12 months make his quest to return to the Top 100 that much more compelling. After breaking his neck last May in Rome, the 25-year-old Blake dealt with the death of his father and a case of shingles in July, and was limited to just two tournaments in the final half of the 2004 season. His ranking bottomed out at 210, but the young American has battled back, and now stands at No. 111 in the ATP INDESIT Rankings, thanks in part to a pair of Challenger titles so far this year. Blake's return has recently been profiled in two magazines. People Magazine devoted four pages to Blake with a story called “A Broken Neck, Unbroken Spirit,” allowing him to write a first-person account of his last 12 months. “I'm still very blessed,” Blake wrote. “It could all be taken away from me tomorrow, but I feel fortunate that I've had it for the time that I have.” O: The Oprah Magazine also ran a first-person account of Blake's past 12 months, promoting the article by saying “The accident could have paralyzed him. The shingles almost did. The unending parade of friends (and their jokes) reconnected the tennis player to the simple pleasures of his life.”

I saw the last three sets of this match. Blake played well (he saved a match point & broke back when Hernych was serving for the match), but Hernych seemed to come up with the big shots when he needed them. If he plays as well as he did today in the next round, he might give Mr. Hewitt some trouble.
