I just read that Marat`s wrist injury is worse than expected...he can`t play Davis Cup and he needs rest till ,at least, 2 weeks after Davis Cup!  So, no Rotterdam and Dubai.
Oooohhh noooo! Please Marat, get well!!

01-29-2003, 05:08 PM
Yes, I also read that.

However, his DC team coach (Tarpischev) did not say that Marat would not play in Rotterdam.

Can you give the link to information saying that he won't play in the tournaments you stated?

I think we need an injury thread for Marat

Get well soon, boy!

It just shows that, what with him and Roddick missing out on their first-round ties through injury, and both Henman and Rusedski having to skip Davis Cup with injury problems, there needs to be a reduced schedule on the ATP and a bigger off-season. After all, which would we rather have - fewer tournaments, or an unpredictable and ever changing series of title winners who come through on the merits of being the least injured rather than the highest quality?

Sjengster, I forgive you for posting in this forum and not mentioning the name of our baby :D but, seriously, the schedule is too heavy and too demanding for the players. I, as a fan of certain players would like to see them everyday on TV. As a fan of tennis I'd like to see my favourites healthy and winning big matches. Quality over quantity, no doubt.

I believe the ATP officials know that as well but then come the sponsors and money. A strong card in any argument. We can complain and discuss how to improve the situation but it won't change anything. We are not making decisions and have to accept whatever we get.

And if you are going to post here again, please use a certain name in your message, you know... :p (j/k)

Safin To Sit Out Russia's First-Round Davis Cup Tie

By Adrianna Outlaw

Marat Safin helped lift Russia to its first Davis Cup championship in history last month. Next week, Safin will be reduced to spectator status when Russia begins its Davis Cup defense against the host Czech Republic.

Russian Davis Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev said the torn ligament Safin sustained during the Australian Open will sideline him for the first-round tie, set for February 7-9th on red clay in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Tarpischev selected unheralded 19-year-old Igor Andreev to replace Safin on the Russian squad that includes Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny, veteran Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Nikolay Davydenko.

Jiri Novak, Radek Stepanek, Martin Damm and Cyril Suk have been named to the Czech Republic team by captain Robert Krechler.

The torn ligament forced Safin to withdraw from the Australian Open prior to his third-round match against 31st-seeded Rainer Schuettler, who went on to reach the final after scoring successive victories over James Blake, David Nalbandian and Andy Roddick.

Safin, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Monday, is expected to be out at least another two weeks.

Injured Safin pulls out

Marat Safin has pulled out of holders Russia's Davis Cup team for next week's first round World Group tie against the Czech Republic because of a wrist injury.

"Safin's injury is more serious than we first anticipated," Shamil Tarpishchev, Russian tennis chief and their Davis Cup captain, told Reuters on Thursday. "It looks like he will be out of action for at least a month."

World number three Safin injured his left wrist at the Australian Open earlier this month, forcing him to withdraw from his third round tie against German finalist Rainer Schuettler in Melbourne.

Last week, Russian coach Sergei Leonyuk said that he saw Safin's chances to play against the Czechs as 50/50 at best.

Instead, Davis Cup winner Mikhail Youzhny will lead the Russia as they open their defence of their title in Ostrava.

Youzhny won the decisive singles match as the Russians clinched their first Davis Cup title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over holders France in December.

Playing as a substitute for Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 20-year-old Youzhny came from two sets down to beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 in Paris.

In addition to former world number one Kafelnikov and Davis Cup newcomer Nikolay Davydenko, who earlier this month won his first ATP title in Adelaide, the Russians also included little-known Igor Andreyev for the February 7-9 tie, although the 989th-ranked teenager is not expected to play.

"It's hard to say right now who will carry the main load for us against the Czechs, we'll have to wait and see how everyone is doing next week," Tarpishchev said.
