UMPIRE BOOST FOR LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL
2005 Liverpool International to be judged by official LTA umpires
Wimbledon quality umpires hailed as major step forward for event
One of the North's of England's biggest summer sporting events has received a major boost - just a week before it begins.
Organisers of The Liverbird Developments Liverpool International Tennis Tournament have been informed that the UK's governing body - the LTA - will be sending two White Badge umpires to oversee matches on Centre Court at Calderstones Park.
Both umpires have adjudicated over proceedings at Wimbledon and the decision has delighted the Tournament Director, Anders Borg who hopes the tournament will eventually earn full ATP status within the next four years.
Anders said: ''The LTA's support is a major step forward for the tournament. Having umpires of this calibre further confirms its growing status among the professional tennis associations and will further improve its reputation among the players.''
Councillor Warren Bradley, Executive Member for Culture, said: ''I'm delighted that this years Liverpool International is receiving the backing of the tennis authorities. The Liverpool International is maturing into a well organised sporting event and this development is a major boost for its future.
''To have the experience of qualified umpires will further strengthen the professionalism and quality of the tournament. Their presence will provide another great stepping stone in the way the tournament is perceived within the sport.''
Players will begin to arrive in Liverpool for the June 8-12 tournament this weekend.
The tournament's star attraction Martina Navratilova is due to hit Liverpool on Monday afternoon to take advantage of practice time on the grass courts for her preparations for Wimbledon and Pat Cash will arrive on Thursday evening.
Two local players have a chance to play in the main ATP event at the tournament, which will include players such as Ivan Ljubicic, Jan-Michael Gambill and Robert Kendrick.
Qualifying takes place on Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th June at Aigburth Cricket Club and 24 players will take part in the qualifying. Clubs from Wales, Lancashire, Cheshire and Liverpool will be entering players.
The Liverpool International is organised by Northern Vision Ltd, in partnership with Liverpool City Council and the Liverpool Culture Company.
