oooh... read that..

"it was not a great first match", recognizes Kuerten
18/02/2003 to 22h54
Buenos Aires (Argentina) - Although satisfied for the victory on the Peruvian Ivan Miranda in the entrance of Buenos Aires, Gustavo Kuerten recognizes that he still needs to improve a lot to conquer the tournament for the second time. Champion of ATT Cup in 2001, the Brazilian beat to number 148 of the world for 2 sets the 0, with partial of 6/2 and 6/4.

"it was not a great departure", admitted Guga, in interview to the "SporTV". "It was a good first match, as always to start with a victory, but I have still much things to improve. To the times you want that the things leave better the one than they had been, but made time who did not play on clay", he analyzed.

On the duel against the native of São Paulo Flávio Saretta in the second round, Kuerten waits to play better of the one than in this match. "For me, it will be an important match, to reach the quarterfinals. I go to try to enter with confidence and to make mine better ", advanced the Brazilian. "I am certain of that, if I to be successful, I'll become better each match ", concluded.

I hope Guga will win his next match and will reach the level he wants to reach!! GO GUGAAA!!! that is the attitude of a champion!!

02-19-2003, 01:54 AM
Theres not much to say about this match.
I knew Ivan from a couple of matches Ive seen him play in chalengers here in Brasil.

He was no chalenge to Guga whatsoever. The brazilian didnt play a good match, and had to count on his serve most of the time to do something.
Miranda couldnt win this even if Guga was injured.

Kuerten said, after the match, that he would always expect to come to clay and play his best. However, he felt he was far from that, and that he would need some more matches in order to acheive that.

Our argentine friend, saff, was there, and said she would give us a couple words on the match later tomorrow.
Thats it for now. Saretta is next, and should be an interesting match.

02-21-2003, 08:39 PM
ok everybody, tonight is an important match, the one that will decide who goes to the semifinals.. I think Guga has great chances, but he has to keep his concentration! You can do it Guga! by the way, his favorite song of Bob Marley is really cool!!

02-22-2003, 12:05 AM
Guga said that he played an almost perfect first set, and I read that in the third set, when Guga advanced 5-0, he only lost 3 points! in the second set, Mantilla surprised Guga by lifting up his level.. but in the third, it was Guga all the way!!

GO GUGAAAAAA"!!!!!!!!!

I hope he does well tomorrow, he could face Moyà... Guga is confident now, I'm confident he'll do great!

02-22-2003, 12:15 AM
Too bad Diss can't give us his analysis on this match. I really want to know whether Guga is playing better than his previous 2 matches.

Diss, are you still around?

Hopefully, Guga will raise another level tomorrow in SF.

02-22-2003, 02:07 AM
Yeah, Im still around. Im leaving tomorrow morning, so wont be able to review the semis and neither the finals if he gets there.
Ill be back on monday, though. Then we can talk again...

About this match, Lee is right. Guga played a lot better. :D
He is growing on confidence and hitting the ball better and better.
Felix was really playing great in the second set, and especially the tiebreak. But he lost his head as Guga stepped up from the start of the third set.

Guga had a great strategy, strong serves, deep shots and shortening the points the most because of his long match yesterday. His backhand was especially good. ;)
Entertaining match, and as Guga says, the deeper he goes in the draw, the better he plays.

So, now good luck against, hopefuly, Moya! What a great match that can be! :D

02-22-2003, 02:08 AM
Hi Diss! Guga has cost me 2 stove top covers and I may need to see a cardiologist soon!

02-22-2003, 03:37 AM
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Gustavo Kuerten and Carlos Moya both won three-set matches Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Copa AT&T tournament.

Kuerten, the 2001 tournament winner, defeated Felix Mantilla 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, while top-ranked Moya defeated Luis Horna 6-7, 6-3, 7-5. The two will face each other Saturday.

But it was Kuerten who was the day's highlight as he seems to be steadily regaining the form that lifted him to the world's No. 1 ranking in 2001.

``This has been an incredible week,'' he said. ``I've improved a lot and with the wins I'm winning the confidence I need to return as one of the top players in the rankings.''

Happy to see Guga gains lots of confident this week.

Good Luck in tomorrow's semifinal against Moya.

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Guga will need all his concentration and his game today... he can do it! GO GUGAAAAA!!!

Ace Tracker
02-22-2003, 04:55 PM
Guga said that he was very satisfied with his game against Mantilla, especially his serving. : 61% of 1st serves in, 20 aces and only 1 DF... That's great news, because it looks like he is getting the knack out of playing on clay back, which is always so important for him... On a lighter note, Guga met with the Mexican rock group Mana after his match with Felix, and the lead vocalist confessed to being an occasional tennis player and being a huge fan of Guga's elegant playing style... Guga, who is also a fan of the band, was in a very relaxed mood and joked that he would teach the band some tennis in exchange for some music lessons...

By Javier Leira BUENOS AIRES, Feb 22 (Reuters) -

MISSED CHANCES Kuerten blamed a series of missed chances in the first set for his defeat against the Spaniard. "The first set was decisive. I had a few chances and let them go, my opponent didn't and that's why he beat me," the Brazilian said. "In the second set, I lost confidence and he had more and more and that cost me that match." Kuerten, still trying to find the form which made him world number one, said he was pleased with his performance at the tournament. "It was good for me," he said. "There were a lot of good players, a lot of whom are going to get to the finals of the most important European tournaments." Moya said: "I showed Kuerten too much respect in the first set and I didn't play at all well. In the second, my game was almost perfect."
