Continuing this convo from the other thread.

I think the longest I stayed up was until about 2 or 3 am when ESPN decided to show Lleyton's night game live.

I'm ready for the slams that keep getting closer and closer to home. lol I just noticed that it goes Australia 19 hrs difference, France 9 hrs, England 8 hrs, and then NY 3 hrs. heh little things amuse me.

Angele

Haven't seen Marly around in a while  :( I'm sure she'll turn up soon though :)

You know what's sad? I've gotten so used to calling Serena Pred Deux that now, any 2 becomes Deux and never two lol... like when I read this thread title, I read the whole thing ending with Part Deux lol

Everybody knows Kim and lleyton's superstitions...
Where did they have their dinners @ aussie Open??

I'm not sure what the time difference with England and Paris is for me... all I know is that RG and Wimbledon matches are on live here generally from 7 or 8 a.m to 3 or 4 p.m which absolutely sucks since I'm at school for all those matches  The only slam where I can actually watch some live tennis at a decent hour is the US Open, where I can watch a bit when I get home from school and then the night matches...

I'm not sure what's the latest I've stayed up for a match  I've gotten up in the middle of the night tons of times but as far as stayed up, I'm not sure... Maybe Lleyton vs. Andy at the USO 2001

He prolly didn't know what to think of Lleyton when Kim told him she was dating him because of how media portrays him. But I'm sure when he met LL he realized how shy and down to earth he is. :D
Everyone who knows LL- Newk, Roche, Rafter, and all his DC teammates etc. have all said he's a wonderful person. I don't think Lei likes him coz Kim does. LL treats Kim like a princess. He's so loyal and devoted to her. I mean, he's got millions of dollars and he is not into money at all. He's incredibly down to earth for someone his age with that kinda money. He doesn't smoke and doesn't drink much and doesn't have any bad habits. (I love that about him. ) What's not to like?
I personally LOVE his on court behaviour. The Come Ons and the profanity. :p :D I think its cool :D

Yeah, but what about the ponytail?!

C'mon_Lley
01-24-2003, 02:31 AM
Hmmmmm......the ponytail :o Its not too bad. :p Although, I must admit short hair look great on him. I liked his hair the best when he won USO 2001. He looked adorable walking up to Kimmy and his crew without the cap.
But, he's everything going for him except the minging ponytail. :o :D I think Kimmy ignored it at first coz she fell for him hard and took the matters in her own hand eventually :p

But seriously, if he goes back to his ponytai days again, I'd still love him as much as I do now. Appearance doesn't mean anything to me. He's the reason I watch tennis. I love his positive attitude, his fighting spirit and fiestyness. :D Its very inspiring.

Man/Mandeux def. Vivi/Paola 4-6 6-4 6-3

Vivi/Paola played a better match, they really did. They were up breaks in the second and third... it's just hard for two small women to compete against men. Oh well, I guess I should just get used to this and ignore them. They're not "talented," just big and strong.

Vivi/Paola proved themselves, though, and they had fun. They'll always be a better team, imo.

Better luck next time, girls.

I think Petrh had prolly one of the biggest Aus day celebrations! We have fire works bands and eveyrone even little kids and parents go to the fore shoe or KIngs Park and we wtach the sky show and soend the day bye the river!

Yes, when is Canada day?

Angele
01-24-2003, 12:00 PM
Canada day is July 1st, still a long ways away lol

We have this concert at the arena, which just seats over a thousand so there's also music and stuff outside but it's not really my kind of thing lol... it's mostly adults that are there and tourists who wanna hear a bit of our music lol

We have a bigger celebration for the Acadian holiday, which is August 15th... for that we have a huge parade and tons of stuff going on after that so it's a bit better since there's stuff for everyone :)

Not so much Canadian music, more like Acadian music lol... it's french ( of course) and has a bit of an older feel since most of it is folklore ( is that an english word  :o )... anyways Cheticamp music is definetly unique from anything else :) Most of it is in our own "slang" i guess, which makes it hard to understand... and of course everything is played with guitars and fiddles :D

If you want to hear it live Allan, you'll either have to go to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick , and perhaps a bit in P.E.I :) Although our music here in town is probably the only of it's kind that you'll find anywhere lol... It's definetly different and most people like it, if only because it's a change.

I've found out that most/all the subtitled bits in the movies are in Sindarin, but the Quenya course I'm reading suggests starting with Quenya, it's apparently easier.... I'm now looking at how to make nouns plural. LOL

LOL, I'll tell you what the signature means first... it's in Quenya.

The first sentence means: "I will love you for better or worse till death do us part."

The second sentence is a bit less gooberish :p . It means: "Take off your clothes and lie down on the bed!" :D

Tinne: I'll be working as a quasi-postdoc in the math department.... my boss tells me that as far as he is concerned, I'm a real postdoc, and he even wants me to start co-supervising his graduate students (eeep! ) ... but 1. he can't pay me full a full postdoc salary, and 2. My PhD isn't in math :o so I just call myself a quasi-postdoc..... with some luck, I might be able to land a teaching position once undergraduate classes start, though.

Yvonne: this is the site where I got the sentences from.... they have stuff in both Sindarin and Quenya, but for now I am concentrating solely on Quenya.

http://forodrim.letsrock.nu/daeron/md_parl.html

The conversation section is quite amusing... but I assume the translations are reliable... it comes from the Stockholm Tolkien Society.

Yeah, I try not to bring to much politics into non-political forums, but sometimes you just can't stop a bleeding-heard European liberal. :D A couple of days ago, Bush had this photo-op while promoting his economic plan, so they put him in front of these boxes that had "Made in USA" on the front. OK, the first list I subscribed to is the 'Elfling' list...just send a blank email to:

elfling-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Apparently the guy that did the Elvish bits for the LOTR movies (David Salo) posts here occasionally.

The second list I subscribed to is the 'Quenya' mailing list

quenya-subscribe@egroups.com

In both cases, as members post messages/discussions, they will appear in your email... I've already received two posts in Elfling concerning the Quenya translation of 'yes', but nothing from the Quenya list yet.

I don't intend to post any messages myself till I learn a bit more... but I think it may be useful for me to 'eavesdrop' for now and see if I can pick things up from there too.

Yeah, I hope so, but I'm not sure. I will know the results of the exam in about a week.

I just start reading the lesson of quanya, I think it will be difficult to learn it.

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 03:56 PM
LOL! It looks quite complex... although I think you should find it easier than me... at least you would be familiar with modifying words for different cases e.g 'genitive' etc. .... that doesn't exist in English :o

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 03:57 PM
I don't think it's easier for me! I don't know any languages what looks like quenya. And I'm very bad in learning languages, I think you will be better in learning languages!

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 03:59 PM
Tolkien's Quenya makes extensive use of big mouthfuls (as does Finnish)

Maybe I've to start learning Finnish too :D Just because I love that country :D

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:02 PM
LOL... naah... like I've said before, I only know English and a bit of Malay.....I tried to learn German some years ago and picked up a tiny bit, but kinda got lazy and stopped.... my German friends thought I had really good pronunciation though! :p French... I also tried that, but it's even harder to learn than German (for me anyway).

I guess you may have a disadvantage cos the notes are in English, it'd be a bit like me trying to learn Quenya using German notes..... maybe they'll have a Dutch translation, learning the language may be easier if you can refer back to Dutch instead of English... I'll go check...

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:03 PM
Oh yes, in fact it says somewhere on one of the sites that Finnish was a strong influence for Quenya.... Tolkien wanted to create a 'beautiful' language, and he thought Finnish was beautiful.

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:05 PM
Do you know French or Portugese? :o Apparently the Quenya course is available in those languages too....

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:07 PM
I think it's difficult to find notes translated in Dutch. There are not a lot people who speak Dutch!
And I'm already used to English, on internet a lot is in English, at tv, there are a lot of English tv programs (okey, we have subtitles offcourse) and I sometimes read books in English. For you it will be a lot more difficult to read German! I can read German too, I live just 5 km away of Germany. But you're right, French is very difficult. I had French lessons for about 4 years, but I still can't speak/ write it.

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:09 PM
I wasn't aware that not many people spoke Dutch! :o How many Dutch speakers are there in the world?

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:11 PM
Anyway, I'm also not good with languages in general... oh well... if we both can't get perfect Elvish, we'll just speak in 'broken-Elvish' then! :p

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:15 PM
yeah, broken-Elvish is good enough :D

I don't know, how many people speak Dutch. The people here in Holland, a part of the people in Belgium, and maybe at some other places in the world a few people speak Dutch.

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:20 PM
Yeah... we'll just practice our broken-Elvish with each other LOL... once I've gone through the entire course, I think I'll find some very simple children's stories and try and translate them and post on the mailing lists and ask the experts to rip me to pieces :p

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:21 PM
It will be difficult to speak Quenya! some words are almost the same, like ata (again) and atta (two). But I don't have to speak it, only write it :D

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:25 PM
Yeah...I should look at the pronunciation guide again... maybe there's a small difference in the way you say it.... but possibly once we know enough, we can tell what word should be there from the context.

I actually want to try and learn to speak it as well... did you see the link in lesson 1? It's a sound file of Tolkien reading one of his Quenya poems. I downloaded it and it was quite interesting to listen to...I wanna speak like that! :D

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:28 PM
I didn't download it, I only tried to listen it at internet, but it didn't work. I will download it another time. I want to speak like Legolas, when he speaks to Aragorn in lotr ttt, it sounds very good.

I think I'm going to ask a friend of me if she wants to learn it too, then I can speak Quenya to her!

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:30 PM
LOL... lucky you have someone to ask... the people I know in real life would think I'm absolutely mad if I asked them to learn Quenya with me. :p

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:32 PM
I think she also says I'm crazy, because she know I 'can't ' learn languages. But she's very good in learning languages, and she loves lotr too. There will be a little chance she says yes if I ask her to learn it :D

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 04:35 PM
She's very good at languages? Ah, if you get her to agree to learn, get her to post as well! :p Does she like tennis?

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 04:37 PM
She not really likes tennis, but she sometimes watch it. But she know a lot of it, because I talk about tennis to her :D But she often watch matches of Haas, that's her favourite player. But I can ask if she want to post in Elvish, but she will not like it if we only talk about tennis.

If Legolas is talking Elvish he looks very serious.

Do you remember the part of the movie when Haldir come to helm's deep, Aragorn and legolas welcome him, and then Legolas is standing next to Haldir. He can't stop laughing there, and I don't know why. But I love that part of the movie. Because Legolas is not allowed to laugh there :D Do you know which part I mean?

Puss-in-Boots

Well, I wish I could, but I'm using a 33K modem... it'd take forever! :o

Also, I connect to the net through my university account... and they have this policy where they charge people for internet use  :( It'd be suicide if I tried to download a movie :(... I just have to get a DVD player, and wait for the DVD to come out.... then I'll watch it over, and over, and over again! :D

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 05:05 PM
I'm happy I don't have to wait for a DVD, I can watch it evry time, evry minute, always. I often watch just little parts of the movie.
Especially the part when Legolas says to Gimli: 'Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?' It's the best part of the movie, even better as the part where they speak Elvish

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 05:07 PM
LMAO.... now I do remember that part! :D

I'm a: Handsome Númenorean

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 05:34 PM

They gave my the name: Astaldohuinëwen

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 05:38 PM
Vinyacamion it is, then! :D

Wow, your name looks rather hard to pronounce!

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 05:40 PM
Yes, I think I can't pronounce it!

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 05:45 PM
LOL... maybe you could try this trick I used.... can you somehow rearrange your name?

There are two ways of writing my full name... in the traditional Chinese way, which is the way it's done on my Malaysian documents, my Christian name comes first, then surname, then my two Chinese names...this way gave me Vinyacamion, which is the nicer result.

However, in Australia, my Chinese names are considered to be 'middle names' and on my Australian documents, my Christian name comes first, then my two Chinese names, then my surname....this way, the program said I was a Beautiful Harfoot :o called Thaliglamion

So, I got a much better result with the first way, and kept that. LOL! :D

The earlier treacherous dwarf result I got by just using my Christian name and my surname.

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 05:46 PM
Hey, it's funny, a friend of me would be of the Uruk Hai!!!!

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 05:51 PM
If I just use my surname and my Chinese names... I become a Furry-footed Vanyar :o called Thauravarion

Doing the same but with a different arrangement gives:

Creepy Eorling called Baranlondeion

Hrmm.... I think I'll stick with Vinyacamion.

Nymeria
01-24-2003, 05:54 PM
It's funny all those different names. I prefer tamurile, because I can't say that other elvish name of me :D

Hrmm.... if I use all possible permutations of my 4 names, I could get 24 names to choose from :p

If I drop the restriction that all 4 of my names must be used, I increase the number of possibilities to 4! + 3! + 2! + 1! = 33.

But I guess that would be cheating. :p :p

Wait, that calculation wasn't completely correct.... 3! comes from permuting 3 names... but there's C(4,3) ways of picking the 3 names to permute out of the 4...

So, it should be C(4,4)*4! + C(4,3)*3! + C(4,2)*2! + C(4,1)*1!

and that would be 1*24 + 4*6 + 6*2 + 4*1 = 64 possibilities...

Sorry I don't often answer, I'm talking to some friends of me at msn. You could be happy you have choose of 24 names, I've just one name :(

That's OK :) I don't mind at all...

You only have one name? I always thought Europeans had lots of names... but then again... I don't know very much about Europe.

At least Tamurile is nice... and it's kinda 'official' because it's based on a translation of the origins of your name. My 'official' one isn't impressive at all! :p

But... we have Elven names! :D

Sigh. I'm just happy this miserable week is drawing to a close. Though I suppose I should be happy that Kim made it all the way to the semis--which is awesome--and she'll be the new number 3 next week, I believe. And she doesn't have any points to defend until Indian Wells, right?

Puss-in-Boots
01-24-2003, 06:13 PM
Yup, I'm quite sure Kim's #3 from next week... and by improving on last year's result :o at least Lleyton still has a pretty nice lead in the #1 position...

Hrmm... my dictionary says 'potatoes' is the correct plural... but it's a British dictionary, so that doesn't answer your second question... will have to wait till an American sees it.

Am really off now...

Hey Angie. I just went to make some tea to throw in the refrigerator, and my nose started bleeding! Yuck!
Hey, you would know about Kim's points. Does she have points to defend before IW?

Angele
01-24-2003, 07:41 PM
Actually, ranking points aren't really my thing lol... however, I don't think Kim has anything before IW and she lost in the second round ( after a first round bye ) in IW so she doesn't have much to defend there.

Hi Tinne!:wavey:

It wasn't said they were there every night, but they have been spotted there a few times. The reporter from Het Belang Van Limburg saw the Hewitts and Kim in an Italian restaurant too at the beginning of the Aussie Open. It's all a bit over the limit what they do to find them sometimes, it looks more like stalking...

Don't know what I'll do with my MSN, I think they've been on my hotmail too, not sure yet. I'm gonna make a new one, I think.
