mathieu will be in the team if he plays milan,if he doesnt then i think Guy'll leave him out.

so paulo isn't definately playing milan? i was surprised he was on the entry list coz i thought he wasn't coming back until like marseilles of something.

01-25-2003, 12:39 PM
good news for the french team: Pavel is likely to not play cos he's still injured.he retired at Aus Open in his first round match vs Furlan and he isnt fully recovered yet.with Pavel we will win 4-1,without him 5-0 :D lol nooo i dont want to be nasty, poor Pavel..get well soon!

Paulo: i dunno if he really plays Milan,we have to wait tomorrow when the main draw comes out ;)

01-26-2003, 07:06 AM

01-30-2003, 08:20 PM
ok guys sorry if i confused u but me and Julien thought the french team would start to practise on sunday in Paris after we listened to a Guy's interview.well we were wrong! LOL :p
in a romanian site i've just read (thanks to a translation-programm and thanks to romanian's similarity to italian!) that french team will arrive in Bucharest sunday night.they'll stay at Hotel Athenèè Hilton (5 stars!),they'll pay just 80 $ at night cos the hotel is gonna make a special prize for them and the draw will be on thursday in the same hotel.
Pavel is still injured but he's in a clinic in Austria where a very famous doctor is trying to help him and he still hopes to be fit enough to play :)

01-30-2003, 08:23 PM
Yes, now you can wonder if french is really my mothertongue :o. I didn't hear the question of the interviewer well and I thought he said they would practice for three days before leaving two days before the tie. I was wrong :o.

*taking french lessons*

01-31-2003, 05:26 AM
LOL VALE...and u say ur not a stalker...

btw, like the hotel has to make a 'special price' for them...THEY'RE RICH ENOUGH!

From Seb's official site:

29 janvier 2003

***He said he'd be in Paris on Saturday?!***

01-31-2003, 05:37 AM
He's so thoughtful to his fans that he's like thinking about when he'll have time to do his interview and for arnaud who does one once a month!

France Fired up for Third Final in a Row

They say a wounded animal is a dangerous animal, and that seems a fairly accurate summing-up of the French Davis Cup team as they prepare for their World Group first round tie in Romania, February 7-9.

Losing to Russia in defence of their Davis Cup title in Paris last November did hurt Sebastien Grosjean, Paul-Henri Mathieu and the rest, but Grosjean got away from it all afterwards, and as he explained, the loss will only serve to strengthen their team bond.

“It was really tough at the beginning and for the four or five days after,” he said. “But I went back home, I was with my wife, my daughter and my son and I spent a good time with them. I went to Orlando with my daughter, thought about something else and tried to enjoy the ‘real’ part of my life.”

It did the trick.

“You learn more when you lose,” said the Florida-based player, philosophically.

“When you win everything is fine, but when you lose you have a lot of questions for yourself and you try to improve your game."

Considering that France have already featured in three finals in the past four years, that statement might well send shivers down the spines of Andrei Pavel and his Romanian team-mates.

Not that the 24-year-old Grosjean is underestimating them. Captain Guy Forget appears to have instilled a unique sense of team spirit in his players – ensuring that they meet up 10 days in advance of each tie to prepare. The French group are probably not mega-stars in their own right but their sense of togetherness makes them almost irresistible.

“It’s going to be tough to play in Romania – they have good players,” said Grosjean.

“But we have good players too and we are really a team. In Davis Cup that can make the difference.”

Such spirit was perfectly personified by the way that every member of the French side comforted the 21-year-old Mathieu, whose heart-breaking demise against Mikhail Youzhny from two sets up, ultimately cost them the Davis Cup. The French side simply surrounded Mathieu and shared his pain. In true French musketeer style, this was a case of One For All and All For One.

Certainly Grosjean believes Mathieu has the guts and the game to come back stronger and better than before.

“He is young, he has great potential, he has won two tournaments in a row last year (Moscow and Lyon) and he’s a really, really good player,” said Grosjean. “He is going to learn a lot from that match and he wants to come back and play a lot of Davis Cup matches.”

Grosjean himself has his sights set on bettering his own performances at the Grand Slam tournaments – he has reached semifinals at the Australian Open and at Roland Garros – and to infiltrate the world’s top five for the first time.

But for the French team, there is only one goal – to make another Davis Cup final and win it, just as they did in Melbourne in 2001.

“Davis Cup is really popular in France and all the players want to do their best for the country,” said Grosjean.

“We hope that every time we start a Davis Cup match that we will win. We have played three finals in four years, which is pretty good, but we want to play more.”

02-04-2003, 08:27 PM
No news from romanian sites for today, they only talk about their players, dont really care about pix either, only Pavel's or Voinea's and i bet u arent interested in them!btw Pavel will play double for sure, they hope also singles (we not :p)

finally FFT updated its site!and i translated this article! thank me pls!

Guy's words:"The scar is still a little painful, says it. I try to give me other goals to reach. Romania, it is a beautiful challenge for if required playing Switzerland at home. One is n°1 with the classification of the ITF thus one is the team to beat. It is necessary that one is very vigilant, that one does not fall asleep on our bay-trees. It is necessary that one puts the bar very high"

Seb said that the court is pretty fast,it's Gerflor-the same of Pau.the team look happy and motivated.Thirty year Santoro sets out again for a new adventure. "If one had gained in Bercy vs the Russians, I would have kept to my commitment, I would have withdrawn myself from the competition", repeat it. Escudé needs convincing successes after one frustrating January and Llodra returns in full light. "the year spent, after the final lost in double with Fabrice with Melbourne, Mickaël wondered what it was necessary that it makes to be selected, eh well it was necessary to gain!" Forget at the time of the organized press conference was ironical Wednesday afternoon by the ITF.
Indeed, success in double obtained with Open from Australia, logically reopened the doors of the team to him. But the left-handed player seems to have retained the lesson on the level of his communication. "From now on, I will say nothing any more banalities in press conference. The conneries, I reserve them for the guys of the team ", sliced Mika. A "sentence" which made howl to laugh its fellow-members .

a funny thing: the Romanian captain have affirmed that his players were worse on a court but more beautiful! :p

I thought that Nico was going to play singles for sure but look at what Guy said

"I hesitated to make play Fabrice Santoro in the single cos it plays very, very well in this moment. Taraflex is probably its best surface. But it is true that the double penalizes it a little for the match of Friday. I hesitated a long time all the same between Nicolas and Fabrice for this first single."

Read funny!

at the end of training sessions of the team of France, preceding the meeting by the double, what a was not the surprise of the players while going to take their shower! A turbid water, even black left piping. The players had to be satisfied with some mineral water bottles to make their toilet before going to devour a good meal.

An article from DC site! :)

With two points in the bag, the French team needed one more point in order to clinch their qualification for the quarter finals of the 2003 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

And despite complaints from the players ranging from a painful back, or cold showers, all the players were on the court at three p.m. to hit the first balls of this doubles match.

The team that played the semifinals versus the United States in last September was reunited to try to give France the vital third point. Unlike the Parisian clay, this time the Taraflex of the Sala Polivalenta was a lot more to the liking of the recent Australian Open champions: Fabrice Santoro and Michael Llodra.

Their Romanian opponents, who brought a 7-2 win-loss record to the match, could not afford to lose and the pressure was most definitely on Pavel and Trifu’s shoulders. The match kicked off on Llodra’s serve with a double fault and two aces. The two French boys stayed focused but had a lot of trouble with the serves of the tall Trifu, who stands at 1m 93. At 2-2, Llodra was not quite as relaxed as he wanted, and found himself serving with three break points against him. These three were saved and the game with them.

In the four following games, all servers set the pace and Llodra even served an ace timed at 222 km/h. This allowed France to go ahead 5-4 and hope for an opportune break. After a shot that went long, the French were presented with a first set point, but this was saved by Pavel. However a second opportunity followed immediately and that was too much to offer to the experience of Fabrice Santoro. The first set went to 'Les Bleus' 6-4.

It was Llodra and not Santoro that started serving in the second set, which turned out to be a set that seemed a little easier for the French. Leading 1-0 and with a break opportunity, the French did not however manage to take a 2-0 lead. At 1-1 Fabrice Santoro served a love game, followed by another one by Trifu. Lots of love games and not too many points played, the set was moving fast with a third love game by Llodra.

At 3-2 the French made their move, despite the yelling of the crowd and the ringing of the cell phones. Santoro and Llodra took it up a notch by winning a fourth love game but this time on the return. The scene was reminiscent of the 2001 semi-finals in Rotterdam when Pioline-Santoro gave France the third point on Saturday night. Indeed the Romanians where not able to do much in the second set that would worry these two attacking players. It was after the third set point on Llodra’s serve that the French found themselves only a set away from qualification for the next round: the French had won the second set 6-3.

With the two first sets on their side, the French pair started off well the third set, by immediately obtaining a break opportunity. This break would not however not make its way to the country of wine and cheese. The next break opportunity came at 3-4 on Santoro’s serve. This point was erased by Forget’s Men in a beautiful manner. A poach at the net allowed Santoro to demonstrate his magical touch and catch both Romanians off balance by sending a drop-shot volley across the net.

With the score at 4-4, both teams held their serves and no risks were taken. The atmosphere was now electric and the outcome of the tie-breaker was about to determine a lot of things. Pavel served first and lost. A big confidence boost for the two Frenchmen. This mini-break was immediately lost by the French, but they however managed to gain the advantage and maintain a very high level of concentration. The advantage was not to be relinquished and the tie-breaker quickly went in favour of the visiting team, and with the victory, qualification for the quarter finals. In three matches, the French did not lose a set.

The quarterfinals in April will be versus either the Swiss or the Dutch. Regardless, the French will as usual be pumped-up, concentrated and professional.

For Guy Forget, sweet dreams in Bucharest.
