Gooooo Guuugaaa tomorrow!
I hope all matches before will be very quick, otherwise I wonīt be able to follow the scores. But matches with Santoro (who is also schedulded on this court) are not very likely to be quick ones :p Well, it may be better for my nerves anyway if I donīt stare at the scoreboard ;)

Yes I also think it's mental.. otherwise there's no explanation:sad:

well he can still come back from 2 sets to 0, but it's always very tough and improbable, and Guga's maybe not physically ready:sad:

Yes, a very depressing day for Agassi, too

Even I don't like Agassi, watching him in the last 2 sets was painful. He should retire but he wants to keep his great record in GS  and the gamblers who bet on Jarkko will be forever grateful.

Back to Claudia's previous question. Guga only lost in 1st round of RG was the first time he played in 1996. He lost in 2nd round in 1998 and the worst results other than these were 4th round in 2002 and 2003 after his 1st hip surgery.

So, this year's lost in 1st round is very bad, IMO.

Surely this loss is bad, but his results before RG already indicated heīs not playing well. We canīt exspect him to "switch" things on once he is in Paris.

I have to go now, hubbie is waiting impatiently for me and will hopefully cheer me up.
Another big hug  for all fellow Gugaholics!

Guga should play some challengers. Look at Agassi and now Blake. In today's interview with ESPN, James said winning the 2 challengers helped him a lot.

This article from the French Open site describes the match:

Fans, desire not enough for faltering Guga
By David Tutton
Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Despite the typically unfailing support of his legion of fans, Gustavo Kuerten fell in four sets to Spaniard David Sanchez. The 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 loss will be hard to swallow for the genial Brazilian, who, even at his beloved Roland Garros, appears to be finding it harder and harder to get his game back on track.

The stats never lie, and one stat in particular stands out from this often lopsided encounter: 83. That is the number of unforced errors Kuerten committed, and, inevitably, the number of points handed over to the grateful Sanchez. The Spaniard may be 138th in the world, with a modest 2005 record of 4 wins for 10 defeats, but he was not about to pass up on such gifts. Rarely, in 42 previous matches at the French, can Guga have been so profligate. Only in the third set did he come close to the form he showed last year, when he beat Federer on a run to the quarters.

Paying the price for impatience

Guga was visibly lacking in confidence, no doubt as a result of his faltering return from injury. Two wins in six matches is a paltry season return and the lack of competitive match experience was evident in the way the three-time former champ uncharacteristically chased the game and pushed too hard at the wrong times.

For one set, the third, the Kuerten of old was back, thumping backhand winners down the line, pulling cross-court drop shots out of nowhere, whipping passing shots past his bewildered opponent and serving aces seemingly at will.

And then, suddenly, at the start of the fourth, and just as the crowd were cheering his every move, the Kuerten of the first two sets was back. The magical winners became sloppy unforced errors, and the match slipped away. Sanchez, in contrast, kept his mind on his job, reduced his unforced errors to a minimum (29), and brought home the win. Guga has gone, Agassi too. They will be sorely missed.

Today's Guga was not the Guga we know.
The number of unforced errors are unbelievable.
It brings tears to my eyes to see him out in the 1st round. He won't do much during the grass season either...

His home is somebody else's home now... even sadder

yeah i think that would help too, he can just skip the grass season and go play a few challengers to get his rank & confidence up

take care everyone http://www.dinarasafina.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_superhug.gif

There's an article on the UOL website, and Guga says he won't play until July 15th:confused: so again he skips Wimbledon! He'll come back for Davis Cup, then Umag and all the hardcourt season I guess;)!

He said the problem was his mental, exactly as we expected (we know him well, don't we;))! He knows he can come back like before:yeah: Guga knows how to make his fans happy:)!

It's much better than having the physical problem again. :)
A little bit sad for him,but he still has lots of chance to win, :yeah: good luck. ;)

I have a problem here.

If his problem is really mental, he should play more matches at a lower level like IS or challenger. He's already rusty, then why played only 2 months with 8 matches and stopped for another 6 weeks. That's totally don't make sense to me unless he's hurting physically. I'm really not buying what he's saying.

Lee, I totally agree with you. Not playing any competitive matches till July 15th wonīt do him any good in my opinion. And if I understand what heīs saying on his website, he still plans to play the big tournaments after Davis Cup using his protected ranking. This doesīnt make much sense to me either.
But if all this means he is hurting Iīm not sure. There also could be other explanations (being not sure how to deal with the situation and buying time or overestimating his ability to compete in big tournaments or simply wanting some holiday in Brazil are just a few I can think of). Or maybe he has just a completely different approach to the situation than we have. We canīt really know.

I wish my theory is wrong too (actually desperately).

edit: My theory is Guga is still hurting.

So far I have no theory (or maybe too many confusing theories melting together) because I still canīt think clearly. Not the losses, but all these bagels and mental meltdowns are worrying me.

I'm really sorry to bring up an old thread, but just wanted to put my opinion forth because I haven't been here in a while.

I think that Guga is rusty, as much as I would hate to say it, and I agree with you guys. Weeks off the tour won't do him any good, it doesn't matter how hard he trains, because there are some things that you can't replicate and that are only in matches. Like the pressure of break point, match point, etc. The only way to build confidence is match play also.

The more tennis he plays, the better he gets. Staying home and training will not be the biggest part. Improving fitness is important, but everything that he works on should be equally balanced.

BUT, GO GUGA!
