That's a good win. Monaco is not an easy player especially on clay. I am happy he won it in straight sets. He must have confidence now. Next round: Sanguinetti who played a 5 sets match today.
Good luck Seb!!!

woow I would have love to be there today it was a atmosphere of corrida, the crowd was fantastic, and Seb said after he won thanks to the public who helped him a lot ! :)

So, can anyone tell me what went on there in the 2nd set? I missed it (was cooking) and when I came back the - totally biased (in favour of Nadal) - commentator was saying Seb was really unsportsmanlike and that he was putting on a show. That sounds very unlike Seb! The audience was rather unfair, I thought. But what was going on
Anyway, great play by both players. Allez Seb for tomorrow!

Depends which commentary you were watching Wilma. On British Europsort, they gave Grosjean credit for trying to get the crowd to quieten down, although some commentary criticised him for not standing ready to receive, so that play could get underway. the drama that kicked it all off was in the first set when Nadal hit what he thought was a winner and what Grosjean thought was long. that happened on game point and Nadal held onto the break to win the 1st set. So basically the crowd was mad that the umpire refused to check a dubious call and they booed him for about a set and a half. Pretty vociferously too. Seemed to have calmed down by the 3rd set tho. The 2nd set was, i think, 2 breaks to grosjean and one to Nadal so Grosjean won that one. But he's 3-0 down now.

crystal
05-29-2005, 07:33 PM
actually wilma, it's that nadal's ball was out, but the umpire said it was in the court. Then at TV they showed the ball and it was clearly out of the court. And seb told the unpire to come and see the impact of the ball. It was rather clear. But the umpire refused to check it. Seb couldn't understand the umpire's decision, neither did the public. It was unfair for seb, it was a break ball for nadal, so a very important point. The ball was out and the umpire didn't want to check it. So the public became mad at the umpire, was crazy !!!! They were shouting at the unpire, and the players stop playing for at least 5-6 minutes. Then the public kept shouting at the umpire for the whole second set.
It wasn"t seb's fault. It was the umpire's. I admit I also shouted at him (although I was at home) like : f***** umpire !!!
Really, this man doesn't know his job. And the umpire in chief had to come and see what happened. It was the first time in my life that I saw it, that the public stopped the match at shouting at the umpire. Becoz it wasn't fair for seb, and the public was dor him. So it was normal, in a way. And seb wasn't "unsportmanlike" at home, he was just asking what he thought was just fair !
Anyway, he played great in the 2nd.
ALLEZ SEB !!!

Aha, thank you for explaining Allanah and Crystal. I came back into the living room when Seb refused to receive. That's when the - Dutch Eurosport - commentator called Seb unsportsmanlike. (I really hate commentators who strongly favour one particular player - in fact, I doubt whether he even heard of Grosjean before.) So, he refused to receive because the crowd made too much racket? Anyway, Seb played really well during the 2nd set - hopefully he'll be able to keep that up.

Yeah, i was watching British Eurosport and Mats Wilander and Chris Bradman commended him for at least trying to get the crowd to calm down. BBC gave him a bit of stick. I have to say I disagree with Crystal. It didn't look definitely in or out. Even after the replays they showed several times while play was halted, no-one was sure.

I'm not a big fan of either player but the tennis they were playing kept me glued to the screen. Grosjean's forehand is on fire and some of the volleys he's made....:worship: ...unbelievable. I cna't wait to see him bring some of that magic to the grass :D

My brother said me the ball was confirmed out by the computer !!!!!

Anyway the most important is that Seb wanted support at this moment and it worked well, after the crowd was 400% with him, it was amazing, and while he was leaving the court he thanked a lot the audience with his hand, he looked very glad. I was very happy to see him as excited in the match and so communicating with the crowd.

Oh, we didn't get anything as fancy as computer graphics on good ol' British eurosport Crystal ;) :D . They just slowed the picture down and then enlarged the ball and the baseline to see if the two were touching at all. I have to confess that that did make the picture a little blurry which is why no-one on the telly could be sure.

Anyway, I'm glad Grosjean managed to turn it around in that 2nd set. It should be absolute cracker tomorrow - I hope he can take it 5 sets like P-H Mathieu did today :bounce: :yeah:

PARIS (AP) -- Umpires have been taking plenty of verbal abuse at the French Open.

Damien Steiner of Argentina, the chair umpire for the match Sunday between Rafael Nadal and Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean, was jeered long and loudly, first by Grosjean, then by the center court crowd.

Fans hooted when a linesman ruled a shot by Nadal on the line, helping him win the point for a 1-0 lead in the second set. When Steiner refused to climb down from his chair to check the mark, Grosjean became incensed.

Jeering by fans delayed play for about 10 minutes, until the boos finally faded when Grosjean made a gesture appealing for quiet. Rain forced suspension of the match until Monday with Nadal leading 6-4, 3-6, 3-0.

Wonder if they will allow the same chair umpire tomorrow or replace him?

Sorry Marine but if your guy Seb needs that kind of support from the crowd--he is NOT a sportsman--just a showman. Any player that wants that kind of crowd participation should be fined. He wasted so much time & was unsportman-like when Nadal tried to serve. What a joke Seb is!! Sorry but this is MY opinion!! The fans should be ashamed of themselves for their actions!! & I wouldn't be so happy to be in that "great atmosphere"---all the fans looked like spoiled lil kids who didn't get their way!!

My hope that the rain delay has Nadal ready to "FRENCH FRY Seb!!!

No one likes to attack a Nadal fan sorry. As long as it's how the medias "keep" away some news it's always hard to judge. I worked in the media and my major is journalism so I know how it works. Seb was playing in front of his home crowd so all of us understand the situation. Sorry the font size is small but this shows that I am not intend to argue with anyone here. Seb fanz are nice!

Don't listen to some people...I was there and Seb wasn't unsportman at all.
He was just furious. People criticize him because he didn't say the crowd to stop earlier, he waited for some minutes before saying "stop" with his racket, it's not a bad thing.
I still love him more since yesterday. He was adorable.

hey allanah !
they showed the ball with a computer thing so maybe we didn't see the same image it's why maybe we disagree. Anyway, on the replay they were showing, it was definitely in, but maybe the computer thing is wrong :-)

sorry I just wanted to say that the ball (hit by nadal) was definitely OUT and not "in" as i wrote just before. Nadal's ball was too long and out of the court, anyway it's what was shown by the computer.
Anyway, seb lost, so sad.
Just wanted to tell the rogi fan that seb has always been a very correct player, very fair and sportmanlike. He saw the ball out so it's normal that he was angry. Then the public just wanted the umpire to come and see the mark and the umpire refused, so it's why it got worse. But seb asked the crowd to stop, it's all right. It's normal that the crowd wasn't happy if it thought that there was some unfairness against seb.
And the crowd wasn't angry at nadal but at the umpire.
Anyway, seb's match is over, but I just wanted to say that he's not "unsportmanlike" and blablabla.
GO SEB FOR THE GRASS SEASON !!!

(hi, i'm eiko by the way :) )
Er, i'm probs saying stuff everyone knows hundreds of times over...my sister was saying that there were loads of dodgy line calls in Nadal's favour before the incident anyway. Anyway, he's just coming into his own now, shame that people'll try to take that away from him. And he got into the second week of RG, yay :)

SEB WAS GRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAtTT
It was the coolest match I've seeeeeen in a very long time.. ooooh amazing... I cant believe they're all being so stupid abt the crowd.. Its just a match.. If they were booing constatly against Nadal, okay, but they werent..

And okay I didnt completely understand why Seb didnt wanted to receive, but whatever, it was a great happening, finally some action... :bounce:

ok so I now know how does a Nadal fan supports his/ her favourite sportsman.

 Don't be sad Crystal and Marine. Seb had played a good game and we are waiting for the grass season yay!!! :bounce:

Oh btw, Julie, Seb won't be upset with that. Remember the "Rumours" about his "disappearance" last year? And this year Seb's here with a good record!

This is all i can find (from l'equipe):

I read some interviews of Brad Stine these 3 last days and he's a nice guy.
He said he was touched by the support of the crowd at the end of seb's match against stepaneck and on crazy sunday, "one of his greater memories of coach ! " :D
He said also Seb is on good shape, he can play very very well this year, he's confident etc.. very nice comments which make me happy.
He's funny cos he said to the journalist on sunday evening he was searching bread for seb "my player is french he absolutly needs bread at dinner !" lol

thanks eek !!
anyway just wanted to precise to some nadal's fan there that I don't mind Nadal, he's a very good player and he seemed very sympathetic when I saw him at Monte Carlo master serie, so I didn't defend seb becoz I hated Rafael, of course not !
I wish him good luck for the rest of the tournament, and i think he deserves to win.
Oh and thanks marine for the anecdotes !
Well, let's concentrate on the grass season !!! Hope seb will play as good as he did in RG. :-)

Sebastian Grosjean - Day 8
Tuesday, July 1, 2003

S. GROSJEAN/J.C. Ferrero
6-2, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6

Q. At 4-4, there was a double bounce on one of your returns. Can you say what happened at the net.

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: At the net when I talked to the umpire, you mean?

Q. Uh-hmm.

SEBASTIEN GROSJEAN: No, I told him it bounced twice, and that's it.

But I was surprised the umpire didn't see, because it was clearly two bounce there.

*smiles with confidence in his moral superiority* ha! still, it's very worrying that an umpire missed it, isn't it?

Well, let's concentrate on the grass season !!! Hope seb will play as good as he did in RG. :-)
Let's hope Seb'll play as well as he did last year, crystal: finals at Queen's and semi-finals at Wimbledon!!!!!! :) And let's not forget that the BBC covered each and every one of Seb's matches at Queen's last year  Am really looking forward to that.

And yes, Kelly, thank you for reminding us about the nice Sébastien Grosjean we all know and love :D

 Translation, please.

Ok I will try but sorry by advance for my poor english

Sebastien Grosjean defeated by Rafael Nadal: "I have some regrets because I've had some opportunities in the beginning of the 4th set. I believed in my chances, I tried to be agressive and avoid his forehand. It was not easy with this fresh weather. He took advantage of the wind and the heavy conditions because he's stronger than me. His ball squirts  more. The wind disturbed me more than him cos his ball turns more than mine. I also missed more easy points than yesterday, overall in my forehand. I missed several points which made me lose my confidence. He is impressive. He likes to attack his adversary. He's a fighter, he loves competitons and big events. He's the favorite with Federer. About the incident (on sunday), it was strange. I only asked the umpire to come down from his chair. After that, i didn't say anything. The crowd thought he has to do it. The crowd was behind me, and supported me the day of my birthday, it was difficult to calm them down cos they were angry against the umpire. It was also difficult to go back into the match. This tournament was very positive for me. I won three good matches and had a good resistance against one of the favorites. This is encouraging for the coming tournaments. I had pleasure on the court. Physically, I felt good, even against Nadal. I have to go on this way."

Oh crystal thanks for the video... :)
Grosjean was sososososooooo fast in the video... can't believe that he was kinda like surfing/ sliding on the clay court!!!
Love to see clay events... they always go very fast :D
