I've heard good things about Baghdatis - but I've never seen him play. he has had some good results but I don't think clay is his surface.

I've seen his play a great match against Federer in the USO, but it was hard. I've never seen him on clay before, and I doubt it's his surface.
Overall, I like the draw :)

jazz_girl

He only played 6 matches this year, he won 3 and lost 3. All those three he lost were on clay:
Monza, against Stoppini: 6-2 1-6 2-6
Estoril, against Ferrero: 3-6 6-2 7-6 (6)
Prague, against Norman: 1-6 2-6

I like the draw also. It's not like Coria's draw but it's ok. If' I'm not wrong, last year he was also expected to play with Federer in QF.

This draw is  David's first opponent is Marcos, a very interesting and talented player. But he is just recovered from the injury...poor Marcos :bigcry: I do think David can pass him without doubt :D

His first 3 rounds matches are not that rough, but beware Super Mario, he got good result in this year's clay.

And after 3 rounds, David could very likely play against Roger~~ :bounce:

He is very talented for sure. And Marcos's tennis is always that nice to appreciate. :D I like his running forehand, which is his big weapon. Marcos's two matches against Roger did impress me a lot!! But he is just recovered from his long time injury since AO, otherwise Marcos can be very tough to David.

If David gets into the rythm of the match, he could go far, and even get to the QF...and play Roger :)
Have they play on clay before? I've been wanting to see those two again, since the AO 2004, but it hasn't happened yet! I hope I can see him!

The only match they played before in ATP is Monte Carlo 2002, and David won it by 6-2 6-1. But it's definitely too early, Roger isn't the one in 2002 any more  It will be interesting to see they play on clay again :p but not that easy, Roger still have many tough ones ahead, such as Gonzo and Carlos Moya. So is David, he should keep his brain on this time....

Very interesting draw.
Possibly Ancic in R3, Tim in R4 and Fed in QF.
I think nalbo would have taken that this morning.
If Nalbo's 100% focused and playing well I expect him to get to the QF, and I would love to see Nalbo renew his rivalry with Fed.
Nalbo must be careful because Berdych and Ancic are players with big serves and big groundies, however over 5 sets I favour Nalbo over most players.

I saw Berdych playing live on clay, and he's no competition at all.

*Ljubica*
05-20-2005, 02:39 PM
I don't think we should underestimate Berdych though - he is a good player and will go out there with nothing to lose. From my point of view - looks like most of David's early matches will be on outside courts - which means much better seats for me nearer to the court :) but almost no TV coverage outside of Argentina for everyone else in Europe.

All I can hope for is having his matches in the night replay. Or chosen by some German chanels around here. I've noticed they were so less narrow-minded than our own commentators!

I know, khyber~~ I like Marcos no matter what. He is so unlucky after AO. But it's always nice to watch his tennis :p Personally, I really don't like Marcos and David meet so early. After the injury, he did deserve some GS winnings to increase his state. Just hope those two can play a good match :D

Me too Jazz. I'm sure Markos is a nice guy and all that - don't know, I've never met him - but I hope David wins and wins easily, because I need to save my nails and keep my stress levels low. I don't want a "nice, good" match - I just want an easy one for David

GWH - I very rarely "enjoy" any matches involving David - I get far too emotionally involved for that! A friend of mine recently saw me on the "Tennis Channel" during the David/Soderling match in Hamburg, - and she emailed me to say I looked "utterly distraught" the whole time  In that instance I think the thunder storm had a lot to do with it - it took all my strength not to run away and hide somewhere - but I still don't enjoy them!!!!!

Marcos will do better in the grass season, but one thing is that he will rise when he plays the better players and he is almost at home here, so that could be a factor.

If people here want David to get back into the Top 10, and have any chance of qualifying for TMC (though I personally think that is already out of the question for this year), then they need him to reach at least the 4th round at RG and the same at Wimbledon. The US Open is not a favourite tourney of his - there is no guarantee that he will do well enough to gain points there - and he doesn't llike Cinci either, so this part of the year is one of his last realistic chances to make up a good "cushion" of poiints in case injuries strike later in the year.

Action Jackson

Or he goes on a tear and wins the indoor events later in the year.

Well I will be there so I hope so!! But he has final points to defend in Basel and Madrid, and quarter final points in Vienna, so that will put extra pressure on him.

Someone should play 1 summer clay event then go to Montreal.

Sjengster
05-20-2005, 04:15 PM
Surely Naba has a great chance to defend the majority of his points from last year, Baghdatis, Morrison/Berdych, Hernandez/Ancic to get to the second week and then Henman, who if he does manage to make it that far will probably not provide much of a challenge. Amazing that for the second straight year Nalbandian could theoretically meet Federer in the quarters, although Federer and Henman are the two Top 8 seeds...

No one would love that more than me - but it ain't going to happen with the DC in Australia to consider. There is always Sopot I suppose ;) I actually love it there!!!!!

And Sjengster - yes - theoretically you are correct - but David is such a strange player - beats Andy Roddick easily one day and loses to Robin Soderling the next

Nalle usually does well in the Slams and this in theory isn't the hardest draw, but he needs to be motivated and be ready to go and I don't see Henman making the 16, but theory and practice are 2 different things.

i think that david can do it well in us open and toronto, and also cinci, he has no points to defend and he had played well there, and he can defend all his points and qualify for TMC, dont forget that he has no points in wimbledon, us open (only 7 points) , toronto, cinci, and paris, they are lots of very important tournaments where he usually plays very good tennis.

LOL - that comment comes from a post I made earlier - where a friend of mine saw me during the Soderling match on the "Tennis Channel", and said that I looked "utterly distraught"! Guess you can't see if people are tall on TV though - not when they're sitting down!!! Yes - David did play well today - it is obvious that he plays so much better in exhibitions without the stresses or pressures that big tournaments bring out in him - that is soemthing he will just have to conquer though.

Btw - as a fellow "Neighbours" fan - wasn't it lovely when Doctor Karl thought he was dying and told Susan that he still loved her and had never stopped loving her  I cried so much!!!!!!

I love it when Nalbo plays the big players in the big tournaments; the commentators usually see nalbo as the underdog but the players know that they're always in for a long battle. I felt he played very well in the Aussie Open, and I still can't believe he lost that match against Hewitt.
This year's RG is a good scenario for nalbo because with most of the attention is on players like Fed, Nadal and Coria nalbo can do his own thing behind the scenes.

Nalbandian is protagonist in Roland Garros
The Argentine Legion continues with its training in Roland Garros before the start of their favourite tournament, and the cordobes David Nalbandian was the protagonist of today's most crowded tennis session, against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

At midday, the cordobes, who yesterday won an exhibitiong beating Roddick by 6-4 6-4, trained for 2 hours with Rafael Nadal, the great candidate to win the tournament, before hundreads of curious people.

My views on Court 6 have been mentioned elsewhere  This court will definately be to Markos' advantage - he is probably more used to playing on small, noisy, distracting outside courts holding about 50 people than David is these days. Hope David can keep his focus or there will be major problems here I fear.

I have already resigned myself to sitting through a tedious WTA match (and probably Stepanek before it too) just to get a seat on this damned court - I remember Gaston playing on it one year and even Franco and his brother couldn't get a seat!!!!
