Thought we should dedicate a thread to Roland Garros, as it's...well, a little special

First up... Richie will play doubles with Gael Monfils. Wish I could see it and good luck to them both! :)

Are he and Tati going to defend their title?

Marine

No he prefers to be concentrated on single (and double) it's more important this year.
I agree !

He'll be against a qualifier for the first round and he may meet Nadal in the third round ... The French crowd will have to cheer him well...he'll need them but with his talent if he's ok in his head and ready to give a lot physically he could beat him but whatever happens it would be a splendid match...! :)

Nadal in the 3rd round = worst nightmare. :fiery: I have to admit, the best of 5 format will benefit Nadal, because he has better stamina and is a better fighter. Hopefully, Richard will beat the odds. Allez! :bounce:

*julie*
05-20-2005, 03:58 PM
OH!!! Nadal in the 3rd!!! Not really lucky to meet the favorite so early in the draw

Richard was very close to win the semi in MC so...
Nadal will be the favorite so Richard will just have to do his best and enjoy himself not to have regrets.
Anyway, Richard has to reach the 3rd round before that. 1st a qualifier then the winner of wessels/mello.
When will we know the qualifier?

:worship: Good luck Richard! :worship:

richard gasquet
05-20-2005, 04:13 PM
yes a qualifier for the first round :) not a favorite like the past years

as for the possible third round against nadal, lets see what richard will show on monday for his first match in 3 winning sets. :)

Allez richard!!!!!!!!!!make this year YOURS! :drive:

Great idea for a thread(nice new avator !!!!)

I hope Richard will be able to get past whatever qualifier he will get. I have my fingers crossed that he will be able to score his 1st Grand Slam match victory!! Did you see the part of the draw where there is like 5 qualifier names in a row? That's crazy. LOL

If Richard does get to 3rd round (and Rafa) hopefully it will be a great match. Of course, I'll be cheering for Richard but I would wish both of them luck.

I believe the qualifier will be announced sometime on Saturday, but yeah I could be wrong.

Allez Richard :inlove:

but for richard, RG is just a beginning for him, take it easy, if can see more matches, i will be so lucky to thk to god, if not, i would like to see his good status, it is enough for me

i will wait to see him at the top

and who knows he must be defeated by nadal? :boxing: :boxing:

I can just imagine the comments from the American commentators if Richard and Rafael do get to play. The young Frenchmen vs the young Spaniard. Seriously, here is someone is under 20 all they refer to them as the young person or the young tennis players every other word out of their mouth is "young". Its so annoing. However, if Richard and Rafa play they are going to have specify which young gun they are talking about. LOL :haha:

Allez

Richard will play Daniele Bracciali(Italy) in the 1st round. The two have never met before.

From the official Roland Garros site:

Richard Gasquet: "To play Nadal in the third round would be fantastic"
It's a fantastic opportunity and a great source of pride to be seeded and avoid a favourite in the first round. Having said that, playing a qualifier in my first game is tricky. My opponent will have nothing to lose and play full of confidence having won three straight to get here. I'll need to be on my guard but if I play as I know I can I should get through the first two rounds. I've seen the draw and the idea of taking on Rafael Nadal in the third round really excites me. I love playing him and it would be a superb match. Before then, I need to win my first match at a Grand Slam and I think the time is right for me. I know there is a lot of expectation after my recent performances but it's good pressure. I'm relaxed and used to the media because even though I'm still young they've been interested in me since Monte Carlo back in 2002.

Allez Richard !

Mixed doubles shouldn't be too bad....but should he make the 2nd week in the singles then I don't think it is wise at all to be playing it on top of doubles as well. Hopefully he will decide what he thinks is best!

HI guys I'm new here, I've been following the tennis from Australia Foxtel Satellite and really disappointed they didn't show Gasquet's match, but I find their showing a majority of the women's matches and their so boring. Even Marat's match only showed short highlights :( and they were showing dark clouds and even the replays they showed the women's matches again and highlights of the mens grrrrrh

Good luck Richie with your next match, hopefully get to the 3rd round and see play Nadal, Rich should play to all his strengths and his game and not worry about Nadal so much well obviously hoping Richie wins and hopefully they show it on centre court and it gets coverage :)

Great run for Richard in this tournament, winning his first 2 Grand Slam matches ever. :) It's a pity he had to meet the hot favourite so early on.

I have to admit, I was quite disappointed with the match. It was hot, so Nadal's topspin shots bounced higher and it was harder and more tiring for Richard to hit. As Richard said later, the weather also took a lot out of him. His serve and backhand weren't as good as they usually are, especially the backhand. It's great that Richard knows he has to work on his stamina to improve and hopefully, he does just that. :yeah:

Let's think positively. A few months ago, Richard was out of the AO with chickenpox. None of us expected him to come back so well without match practice, winning 2 challengers, beating Federer, reaching the SFs in Monte-Carlo and final in Hamburg, getting seeded for Roland Garros, and winning his first 2 Grand Slam matches. We should all be proud of him. :)

Hopefully, he'll do well this grasscourt season. Like he said himself, grass suits his game. He can serve well and he can volley well. Let's cheer him on. :D

Last year Richard played Queens' Club and lost 1st round to Igor Andreev. He also qualified last year for Wimbledon, but lost a heartbreaking 1st round match to Kenneth Carlsen in 5 sets.
We will just have to wait and see how he performs on grass!

I'm sorry girlz I didn't have a chance to reach my computer in the last few days...surely you already know he's done well in his first 2 rounds! :D his first set was really easy for him in the beginning, so our commentator guessed he started to lose points in the 2nd one just because he got too bored))) or 'maybe Richard decided to make his training longer?' (that's what he said, and yes, considering the play in the 1st set it really looked like a training for Richy rather than a serious match ;) )
eventually he won and that was great! I don't remember ever being so happy when my fav wins in the 1st round =P I think I'm just too emotional  but I can't help myself  when I see HIM :worship: :worship:
 dunno why they didn't show his 2ndround match against Delgado  anyway I'm absolutely happy he won (am I starting going mad?)

Now that Agassi is out of Wimbly, i think that it changes Richard's situation. Doesn't it? And i heard that Richard may be seeded #24 and that the top 8 could look like this:1-federer, 2-hewitt, 3-roddick, 4-safin, 5-henman, 6-nadal, 7-canas, 8-johansson joachim...But i really don't understand anything about this Wimbledon formula so...

Agassi out of Wimbledon

LONDON (AFP) - American veteran Andre Agassi, the 1992 champion, pulled out of Wimbledon because of injury, the All England Club announced.

The nature of the injury wasn't specified but the 35-year-old had revealed after his first round defeat at the French Open last month that he needed cortisone injections to cure back pain caused by sciatic nerve inflammation.

Agassi also missed the 2004 Wimbledon championships because of a hip injury.

The American, only one of five men to have captured all four Grand Slam titles, beat Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic to win his lone title here in 1992.

"Andre Agassi regrets he will have to withdraw from the Gentlemen's Singles due to injury," said a statement released by the organisers.

"Mr Agassi says in a fax that it is a regrettable decision and he will miss playing in the most prestigious tournament in the world."

Agassi is the latest injured star to pull out of Wimbledon which gets underway on Monday.

Former French Open winners Gaston Gaudio of Argentina and Spanish duo Carlos Moya and Albert Costa all withdrew on Monday.

Gaudio, who also skipped last year's Wimbledon and has only won one match on the grass at the All England Club in five visits, claimed he had a shoulder injury and has been replaced in the main draw by Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and Montenegro.

Fellow claycourt specialist Moya has a shoulder injury and is replaced by the Czech Republic's Bohdan Ulihrach while Costa, who has undergone knee surgery, will be replaced by Australian veteran Scott Draper.

Moya reached the fourth round last year while Costa was a first round victim in 2004 having stayed away for the previous four years.

America's Mardy Fish and Argentinians Juan Ignacio Chela and Mariano Zabaleta also withdrew on Monday because of injury.

On Tuesday, Russia's world number 14 Elena Bovina pulled out of the women's event because of a shoulder injury.

I can't wait for the Wimbledon seeding. Delsa, why would Henman be 5 (and Nadal 6)? Tim lost so many points during this clay court season.
Wimbledon messes with the seedings sometimes, but I guess we will have to wait and see where Richard is seeded.

Go Richard :bounce:

Seeding arrangements (Men's and Ladies' Singles) at Wimbledon

For men: The seeds are the top 32 players on the ATP Entry System Position (ESP), BUT then rearranged on a surface-based system A seeding committee is not required for the Men's Singles since the seeding order is determined using an objective and transparent system to reflect more accurately an individual player's grass court achievements: The formula is:
Take ESP points at 13 June 2005
Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournament in the past 12 months
Add 75% points earned for best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that

For Ladies: The seeds are the top 32 players on the WTA Tour rankings. The seeding order will follow the ranking list, except where in the opinion of the Committee, the grass court credentials of a particular player necessitates a change in the interest of achieving a balanced draw.

Applying this formula results in the following men's seedings:

1 Federer, Roger
2 Roddick, Andy
3 Hewitt, Lleyton
4 Nadal, Rafael
5 Safin, Marat
6 Henman, Tim
7 Canas, Guillermo
8 Davydenko, Nikolay
9 Grosjean, Sebastien
10 Ancic, Mario
11 Johansson, Joachim
12 Johansson, Thomas
13 Robredo, Tommy
14 Stepanek, Radek
15 Coria, Guillermo
16 Puerta, Mariano
17 Ferrer, David
18 Nalbandian, David
19 Haas, Tommy
20 Ljubicic, Ivan
21 Gonzalez, Fernando
22 Hrbaty, Dominik
23 Ferrero, Juan Carlos
24 Kiefer, Nicolas
25 Dent, Taylor
26 Lopez, Feliciano
27 Gasquet, Richard
28 Novak, Jiri
29 Massu, Nicolas
30 Soderling, Robin
31 Youzhny, Mikhail
32 Volandri, Filippo

Note: Agassi, Gaudio, & Moya withdrew.

Richard drew "dangerous" first rounds opponents but he could get through if he plays his best tennis and then he was luckier than he usualy is for the 3rd round where he may face Nadal. Not that Nadal is not very dangerous especially against Richard that he'll really want to beat and in a Grand Slam with all the motivation etc...and he reached the third round in 2003 knocking out Ancic...but he was one of the 3 less worse draws Richard could have had...

Not so sure...I think it is now a more dangerous draw because Schalken was not in top form loosing twice at the first round against players that are not grass-court specialists like Sanguinetti... But now Richie'll certainly face in the 2nd round one of the very motivated lucky loosers among who there are a lot of in form players who love grass ...

" Grassquet, le génie en herbe !"

Excellent quote found on general messages !
A mix of english and french word games.

"génie en herbe" is litterally "Grass genius", in french it's an expression which means "budding genius" or something like that.

I was watching a Wimbledon preview show today on ESPN and Patrick McEnroe was making his predictions for Wimbledon. He predicted that Richard would meet Andy in the semis. This isn't the first time I've heard this prediction, but I can't believe it still. I am just worried about getting out of the 1st round on Tuesday and he's predicting an Andy and Richard semi. I think that's a bit too far in advance for now. But I just though it would be an interesting thing to know that even American sports commentators are really acknowledging Richard. :worship:

One more thing. My friend Hannah has a site dedicated to Richard in French :) If anyone is interested here is the link and there's also a message board too:
http://www.freewebs.com/richardgasquet/

Allez Richard

Yes but today Myskina survived the graveyard court...and it was very lucky...
So maybe it won't have any importance and moreover it will be your birthday to counter-balance the effect of the "curse" (another one... )... ;)

Why this court?
Maybe the curse of Nottingham times the curse of Court 2 will negate each other (just like two negatives equal a positive) and the result will be in Richie's favor. I hope so!!
I have a test tomorrow so I won't get to see any of this match except if the match it on really, really early which won't happen.

Allez Richard :bounce:
