Well time to have a few days rest after the Rome show and prepare for the very slow courts of Hamburg.

What to expect as long as he wins a few matches, that is all that counts as everything is geared for the one that counts.

OK, Gaston, get your stuff together. Stop letting little things like scoreboards be a distraction. Should you meet Lord Farquhar again, you need your thinking cap on.

The thing is that the "drama queens' on GM for the most part don't have a clue and Wyver made a very good point. He has had these matches before and now all of a sudden it's an issue.

It's old news, does it mean I like those bad performances. I mean I like them even more than the victories and I see the visual pollutant of an alcoholic poster tries to make a point.

I can imagine it, very easily! But I'd like to see Richie's reaction, in front of a winner of RG. He has been totally paralyzed in front of Agassi. He admitted it himself. He said he was like a little kid...I'm not pretending Gaston can have the same impact on him, but I'd like to check the reaction! :)

Gaudio played a very solid match, especially his backhand ("best backhand in tennis", quote from a poster with the top 9 seeds in Hamburg) was working very well, also his forehand and net game.
It was drizzling most of the time and there was a cold wind but he coped with the conditions very well.
On center court which is next to court 1 they made a lot of noise (Agassi was playing) and Gaston was really unhappy because it disturbed his concentration.
But in the end he won quite easily as he was clearly the better player and his game was working fine.

Hi all! I´ve just seen Gastón´s match, where he showed he´s playing very well indeed – at least today! :worship:

He appeared all dressed in white with his trademark blue socks, but it was really cold and underneath his shirt he wore another shirt, red. Sanchez was wearing the same RG shirt but didn´t look half as good!

Gastón complained as usual, but discreetly, threw no racquets, had no foot-faults or double faults, and put up with the most unbelievable racket from the centre court where Haas was playing, and later when Agassi appeared. He just laughed once at the din and carried on with the job.

His backhand was working to perfection and his forehand too, and when he tried drops they were lethal. He kept hitting shots like whiplashes close to the lines and had a lot of winners. His first serves weren´t all that dangerous and that could be a problem against a more difficult rival. The TV commentators complained that he was too far behind the baseline, but with Sánchez´s style of play it seemed to work.

There was one funny moment when he was 1-2 down in the second set and he announced to his team “The show is over!” (whatever he meant by that) and proceeded to win the next five games and the match! :haha:

I found it much healthier to see Gastón´s match knowing the result, I think I´ll take it up from now on! But tomorrow on court 2 we´ll have no TV coverage at all!
Vamos Gastón tomorrow against Costa! Show him what you´re capable of! :cat: :cat:

Hi everyone :wavey:

I saw the match on Court 2 today and in the beginning I was very worried about Gaston. He was down 0:3 against Albert and he was so angry, I have never seen him like this before. He smashed his racket very badly and got a warning for this. He was very angry about his game and I was sure he will loose the match. He was shouting and everything, but after he had won the 1st set, he was a bit more relaxed.

Okay, the 2nd set was, as you see from the result, very easy.
So I hope he will play great against Rochus...

god even though I know Gaston this kinda stuff would still freak me a out a bit, lol....I'm happy he manages to overcome it but sometimes when he doesnt...hmm, u gotta be careful if u're in the first row when he gets in such a mood lol, never know if something like a racquet wont hit ya...juz hope he gives himself a break tomorrow in that regard ;)

Yeah, that was one interesting match. Gaudio had a slow start and as Sommarsverige said was really unhappy with his game. He smashed his racket, hit the wire-mesh fence and was saying things in Spanish to himself and his team all the time.
When he was a double break behind he broke back and held. At 5-4 when Costa served for the set some idiot threw stones onto the court from the nearby street. Gaston was really mad and screamed (or cursed) out loudly. After this incident he broke Costa again with some sensational winners. After winning the first set 5-7 he became relaxed and played nearly flawlessly.
He hit many amazing shots and the crowd was impressed by the bad-etmpered spirited Argentine. While Costa could keep up with Gaston in the first set he was absolutely defenceless in the second with no weapons left to score against Gaston. In the end Gaston was not really *happy* but at least not as angry as before.
I am really looking forward to Gaston's match tomorrow on center court. Rochus is sometimes a difficult opponent but I am looking forward to Gaston beating him without probs.

Gaston won and all those games consecutively is a good thing and I just hope he is ready to go for his next match.

He is not a machine and even machines break down, but that is not the point, as long as he beats the opponents in front of him, and as I like Costa I won't be going overboard about this win at all.

Fed-Express and Sommar, thank you so much for your excellent reports! :worship: Perhaps I should have remained in blissful ignorance - I hate it when Gastón gets like that!
He's obviously frustrated because he's not playing as he'd like to, but this lack of control is worrying to say the least!
Hope he has an easier match against Rochus. If he wins he's up against Chela, and we know he hates playing against friends. What little killer instinct he possesses (except against himself!) disappears, so he'll just have to beat him through sheer talent...

Choupi
05-12-2005, 01:21 PM
I agree Vale! It's sure that if he has to play Chelita in the next round, it's gonna be hard for him. Not because the player will be one of the best, but because he will have to forget that he's a friend. But don't go too fast! First, he has to show the door to Rochus!

yes I do prefer when he loses 62 57 36, instead of 06 16 - one knows he's fought in the one case so I couldn't really be too sad - all the more if Rochus really played that well, maybe he had more desire to win in the end?..But Gaston should be able to win a Masters.

ok but Gaston is better that Rochus..1 set prove it, but then he lost his mind..and it's sooooo sad for a fan, U know  Rochus have done what he had to win..this is all, but we know Gaston this is his strange world

yeah, but if Gaston isn able to continue the level of the 1st set till the end, and Rochus lifts his, heard he made a million drops and that worked for him, well, and thats what happens....I just hope Gaston is more positive than negative, and I think when he is, he's able to pull it off, but not today!

Poor Gasti... why did he lose today? Why is he being so angry??? What a shame... I haven't seen him on TV for ages... only AA, Pandy and Guille... how exciting... I shall only cheer for ROGI now... nobody else left [not even Gasquet... unless he plays Guille in the F]... crap.

Ok, everyone please don't hate me

I had errands to run but I could not leave till the match was over. I think that Gaston did give Christophe an edge by losing it but Christophe played the best that I have ever seen him play. Sorry for my sig (if anyone is offended) but this is Christophe's best result...I've liked Christophe for about as long as Gaston so this wasn't easy for me. I was :D one moment and  and then :banghead: .

Is it just me or is Gaston showing signs of truly feeling the pressure with RG so close? I'm used to his fits and temper tantrums but he just seems more so. I don't know...maybe it's just me  .

Sorry to all Gaston supporters. Big

I couldn't see the last games of the 2nd set and the third set because they stopped showing the match (a Spanish football match was about to begin)... but yeah, I don't know what was wrong with him. He was angry even when he had won the 1st set, well maybe not angry but in a bad mood. As I've said several times, only he knows what's going on in his head or whether he's feeling pressure or not (even when he's said repeatedly he doesn't feel any pressure for RG). He still has a bit to improve in the matter of letting his mood or any external situations affect his game negatively. In spite of the result, you know I keep supporting him because I know what he can do. He did a good job in this tournament nevertheless, in comparison to last year. But it's over and now on to Dusseldorf! :)

Alma, what made me react wasn't a joke, I'm already used to them... It was a very nasty and gutty comment, in French, that had nothing to do with tennis or the game or how he played. This is the sort of comment that would have me react for anybody else! I can't accept it!

Well Gaston started well and I thought this could be a good performance, but Rochus was nervous and stepped up the level of his game at the start of the 2nd set and Gaston didn't vary his play enough at all. As Rochus was getting more confident Gaston was playing some neither tennis, it was neither here nor there.

One thing that was very noticeable when Gaston had a passing shot oportunity for most of the time he tried for an outright winner, instead of varying it and on the backhand he was going down the line all the time and Rochus was camped there and just hitting little drop volleys that were even more effective as for Gaston's court positioning.

His mood well it wasn't the best, but that's him. It was a big opportunity lost, but the fact that Rochus was the better player on the day, he outhought, outmanouevered and outplayed Gaudio and deserved his win.

Time for Dusseldorf and see what happens there.

This idiot must have pissed you off in a big way. I mean you see where I was coming from yesterday when I wasn't celebrating his form so far, I mean I said earlier in the year the lack of physical base at the start of the year might not be a good thing.

Actually he has to find the key and as for pressure, it's only the pressure he puts on himself which is too much at times, but hey that's the way he is.

You know me by now...I'm not really keen on entering arguments. Certainly not when it comes from perfect idiots. But what he wrote yesterday has really made me explode! If he had stopped with "he asked for it", talking about Gaston's loss, I would never have reacted. But what he has added afterwards was a direct attack to the man, not the player. And a very nasty one. And this added to the fact that he did it in French, so that not everybody could get the whole meaning of what he had written has been the top thing! Of course, he's responded, coming with those well-used arguments about Gaston being that impostor who had been so lucky to win RG...still in French! That sounded like some war declaration for me. Important detail...it's not because it was about Gaston that I have reacted. It's that I can't accept that sort of comments for anybody.

I think I made a new friend...

At most he'd only play 4 singles matches if they made the final, but it depends on the team that Argentina have, they might use all the players in singles that's all. It's about practice and he is playing for Argentina and not himself that is the difference.

I've been trying to imagine what has been going on in Gastón's mind during this clay circuit and will post a few ideas for you to discuss or destroy (!):

How will Gastón re-invent himself after these knocks? He’s come back before, but he had the incentive that he felt misunderstood after he’d lost in Málaga against players ranked first and sixth in the world. This time he must be full of self-doubt.

I think he hasn’t been able to stand these pressures:

1)He feels he HAS to be playing perfect tennis before Roland Garros.
2)He HAS to accumulate a good cushion of points before RG, “just in case”.
3)He feels all eyes upon him waiting for him to prove he deserved to win in Paris.

These are the results of all this pressure:

1)When he can’t play as perfectly as he would like to he despairs because he’s running out of time and he hasn’t yet achieved the fine tuning he’d hoped for.
2)He hasn’t accumulated sufficient points before RG and he feels that if he drops out of the top ten he’s a failure.
3)He dreads looking like a fool and each time he loses badly he also loses some of his self-esteem.

But I think there’s still time and I hope that in Düsseldorf he’ll play all-out, knowing he can’t afford to collapse under pressure. I read in the Düsseldorf website that he said “The Arag World Team Cup was the basis for my victory in France. Three guaranteed and exhausting singles matches”.

So here we go again on Monday…

Tricky_Forehand
05-13-2005, 09:19 PM
I don't have much to add Vale because I think you may have hit the target. Gaston can vocalize all he wants that he's not feeling pressure but I feel that his actions on court are speaking otherwise. It's perfectly understandable, I think, for him to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of defending. Or, at least, gaining those points to assure that his ranking won't nosedive if things don't go well in RG.

I almost think that he's putting the pressure on himself more than anything. If only, he could return to his mind-set prior to winning RG where he just played through, and still won, despite the temper tantrums. But he did win RG and things have changed. Obviously, he has won titles this year but those tournaments weren't weeks away from the biggest title that he's ever been faced with defending. Just my thoughts for now.

sonatinca
05-14-2005, 06:36 AM
They always said that noone can blame and punish us more then we can do it ourselfs. So I'm affraid just like Vale said Gaston got into this trap, so he's the onlyone to find the way out. Maybe when he see that sky didnt fall down to earth after he didnt win RG and his fans still with him he'll stop eating him self? (but of course I hope he'll win it :worship: though i wont change my attitude to him if he dont :) )

Vale, those are very good points for discussion and thanks for bringing them up.
As for pressure I heard one quote which really sums it up for me it's a bit extreme, but it makes sense. "Pressure is when someone has to find a way to get their next meal and how to survive the next day without the necessary means".

He'll never be the most confident guy on court this is a given, but the game has not changed, the principles are exactly the same and he has to do the best for himself and no one else playing tensely or not putting in at all isn't going to do the job.

Whatever he choses, the big one isn't far away and everything should be geared for this tournament.

That's what I usually do too...depending on who is posting there. Sometimes it's fun! Because you know some of the posters around and who they're cheering for, and you can play a bit with them! ;) But that's very rare...

Gaston under pressure? For sure! That's obvious, even if he claims that's not the case. Even if he doesn't feel it...the mind is so strong that he won't even notice that's the reason of his actions and reactions. And personally, as a fan, I think that I shouldn't add to that pressure in expecting that he defends his title. There are already too many who do so for me!

That's the thing what works for one player, doesn't work for another. This is the time where the psychologist has to earn his money and keep at him.

The ball is yellow and has to be hit over a net in between a set of lines, he needs to make sure his feet are always moving and mind focused on the ball, everything else is just a sideshow.

yeah its true....and even when you write it down, it seems to be so easy. But it just takes a little bit more. He just need to do what he thinks is best and have faith in that. Then everything will fall in the right places.

Like you said, everybody is different, what works for this person doesn't work for the other..

Nothing is always that easy, but there are things that are constants and those that I mentioned are constant factors that don't change. If he is happy off the court then that will help for sure.

For example, against Rochus in the 1. set, he played fantastic Tennis! But then he started to talk to himself...... He want's to play the best Tennis he can. In the 1. set he played fantastic as I said! Then he tought he have to play every time like this, so he got angry with himself, so he wasn't concentrated at all! That made me think about his matches he gave just away without fighting! see vs. Ferrer in Rome! But from Hamburg I can say something positiv! He even tried to come back when he was 4:0 in the 3. down! If he had hold his serve at 3:0 then the match could turn! It was realy sad for me cause after the 1. set I thought he will outplay him!
Is it better now with his brain then last year? If he would not have those problems he could be nr.1 for sure!!!!

your opinions?

btw can anyone give me his tournament scheudle?
