Well done Dmitry Vlassov, he was a very promising player a while ago, I saw him play at a tournament in Germany (I played there too btw  :p... but not very successfully) and he was good, very powerful; he won that tournament I think.
If he does well and becomes a good player, I imagine he'll be very popular with the ladies ;)

Just out of curiosity, why is Jarko playing here?

Is it in his hometown or something?

ALL RIGHT!! Jarkko v. Richard for the title.

Rebecca: I'm not sure why he's playing this challenger, but since it's his only one this year (I think), I think it's because it's in Finland, it's his birthday, and he just wanted to be home for a week before launching into the summer hardcourt season.

07-27-2002, 08:13 PM
I don't think he would play if it wasn't in Finland, besides he is titleholder so wanted to come back for his fans.

Jarkko v. Richard in final :D

Good luck Jarkko in final(sorry Richard) ;)

Not his hometown. One reason why he is here is that in last years winners speech (was ranked 200+ then) he promiced that he will come back to defend his title.

Was shaky yesterday. Trailed 0/4 in the 2nd. And escaped (again)

Current final score:

Nieminen leads Gasquet 7/5 ...

Congratulations to Jarkko (did he say again in his speech that he will be back next year?) and that's still not that bad a week for Little Richard.

Congrats Jarkko :D :bounce:

better luck next time Richard :) ,he still needs experience.

Yay, Jarkko! :) And so gracious of him to come back and defend his title successfully! Richard gave him more of a fight than I expected, and I think that says he'll be a great player as he gains experience.

He plays Richard Kraijeck in the first round next week at TMS Toronto. Hopefully he will have the confidence to do well in that match.

Does anyone know where I can find a picture of Jarkko with the trophy? I want to feature it on my site :)

Did not promise to defend title next year :(
If tournament is bigger ie. 100k then he might.
Points were according to 75k this year so it is possible.

Korben, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I've had the hardest time finding things about Jarkko on the web because I don't know any Finnish.

It's sad that Jarkko won't play at home again, but understandable. This is the first year he's qualified by the grace of his ranking for the TMS events, and hopefully he will go nowhere but up :) so he has to play the tour events now. Besides, those of us who live abroad want to see him too! :) You can't keep him to yourself forever :)

Just wanted to let those who are interested know that Jarkko and his trophy are featured prominently on my website (along with an article in English):

(looks best in Internet Explorer)

08-01-2002, 11:54 AM
Glad to be helpfull. Jarkko also has own website. At jarkkonieminen.net Not stunning and lacks photos, interviews etc.
Usefull part is "Tulevat tapahtumat" = his schedule.

08-01-2002, 05:08 PM
LOL, I had a time trying to get in touch with the folks who ran his website, but I found it in my research & linked it accordingly :)

Thanks for the lesson, heh.
