Roddick, Hewitt, Henman Headline Stella Artois Field
By Tennis Week
04/28/2005

Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick will prepare for the grass-court Grand Slam by attempting to extend his reign as king of Queen's for the third straight year. Two-time defending champion Roddick, three-time champion Lleyton Hewitt and three-time finalist Tim Henman lead the field for the Stella Artois Championships set for June 6-12th at Queen’s Club in London.

Croatian Mario Ancic, a Wimbledon semifinalist last year, serve-and-volleyers Taylor Dent and Greg Rusedski, and 18-year-old French sensation Richard Gasquet, who upset world No. 1 Roger Federer on the clay courts of Monte Carlo earlier this month, are capable challengers in a formidable field.

Ancic has established a well-earned reputation as a grass-court contender with Wimbledon victories over Federer and Henman.

Sebastien Grosjean, runner-up to Roddick the past two years at Queen's Club, Thai Paradorn Srichaphan, hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, 19-year-old Czech Tomas Berdych, who beat Federer at the Olympic Games last year, Igor Andreev, Andre Agassi’s conqueror at the 2004 Stella Artois Championships, and a former junior world No.1 Marcos Baghdatis are among the other prominent players in the field.

"It’s a sparkling field," said tournament Director Ian Wight. "Lleyton, Andy and Tim are joined by an outstanding crop of young European players headed by 2004 Wimbledon semifinalist Mario Ancic and Richard Gasquet, who seemed to come of age with his performances in Monte Carlo."

For the first time since the inception of the event in 1979, every direct acceptance into the main singles draw is ranked inside the world’s top 100.

The last direct entrant is No. 94 Agustin Calleri of Argentina. Previously, the highest ranked player to gain the last direct acceptance into the draw was Julian Knowle, then ranked No.102, in 2002.

Final’s day at the 2005 Stella Artois Championships will feature a special challenge match between John McEnroe and Boris Becker to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Becker’s big breakthrough. It will be the first time that they have ever played each other on a grass court.

For more information, please visit the Stella Artois Tennis official web site.

from what i hear ian flanagan :woohoo: and andrew murray are gonna get 2 of the wild cards! dunno about the others yet though but suspect it'll be a few more brits :) but i would assume alex would probably get one too! but siobhan would probably know about that.

 I like Ian and he probably deserves one, but has had shoddy results since last Queens. One of my coaches took him to 3 sets at a satellite!
And he got so cocky after that match-I heard his friends actually wanted him to lose. Although he played off his face, and the crowd there was electric-it was unreal!

you forget that the only way of getting brits interested is by having brits involved and ian is not a no hoper he made quater finals last year! and andrew murray has a great future so both would be well deserving! and if the americans can give all their wild cards to americans (and 15 year olds being rushed in too early at that) why the hell shouldn't the brits? sorry but i think our boys are deserving!

I'm surprised that Hewitt's on the list (at least there's no word of him pulling out); I would have thought he wouldn't want to risk worsening that rib injury before Wimby... Speaking strictly as a Hewitt hater (and Roddick fan), I think that's wonderful!

Speaking strictly as a Hewitt hater (and Roddick fan), I think that's wonderful! :angel:He'll try to play. He's the type of player who plays better with matches in him. I'm sure he won't pull out til the very last minute if it's at all possible that he might be able to play. Depending on how bad the original injury was, he might be fit enough to play queens by the time it starts.

Also, I like the way that Murray gets these WC. Barcelona - given one shortly after injury problems so he is not fully ready to compete against the best players. Queen's - given one when he will have at best 2 days to practice on grass, his WORST surface.

I don't get the logic. Why not give the guy a WC when he stands a chance of winning a match!!! Some other Brit should have got his Queen's WC and instead Andy should get one for Nottingham. I very much doubt he will get both grass events...if he does then I will shut up! :p

Man you are reading my mind!! :yeah:

1. Monfils has at least made use of his WC in winning a round or two but really he should get by on his own now. He is in the top 100 for goodness sakes - if he can't get in by direct acceptance then he should qualify. There are plenty of other events later on this year where the cut off is far lower than his ranking. Our Brits need them for our events...likewise for other countrys' events.

2. I agree. We don't get WC in return. Why do we bend over backwards for others? I'm surprised Felgate, in all his dominance at the LTA, hasn't either stopped this farcical procedure altogether or rung up a few other tourneys and negotiated one of our players to get a WC there.

...and for the record, I DO NOT WANT TO SEE MARK PHILIPPOUSSIS GET A WC for Wimbledon this year. I respect the fact that he has been a finalist but he has been in sh*t form since then when he wasn't carrying an injury, and he still obviously has injury problems now. It will be a waste and....what does the Aussie Tennis Federation do for us? Jack Sh*t.

One of them should definitely go to Jamie - he has done well the last 12 months, was the only Brit winner in Surbiton and actually caused a huge upset there last year (def. Dent). If that doesn't justify a WC I don't know what does.

The other should go to Johnny Marray. The last 12 months have been a wake-up call for him (I think he got complacent after last year's grass court season) and he has done well recently. I was impressed with his Nottingham challenger run. He has a great game for grass and, like Delgado, was hugely impressive at Queen's last year. Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch his match against Hewitt last year but I heard huge praise from everyone, and taking Hewitt to 2 tiebreaks ain't bad!!

:haha: Sorry man.

I hate to say this but his run was an absolute fluke, incredible as it was. He played well that week and fully deserved his wins but since then he hasn't been able to beat guys ranked in the 1000s. He has had injury problems yes, but I saw him at a Notts satellite event and he looked moody, unmotivated...crap. He just wasn't the same guy. The standard at the top has become even better in 12 months...he couldn't live with Grosjean at his best...now he couldn't live with the worst grass player in the Queen's acceptance list. Sorry, but he has made a lot of pathetic excuses over the last 12 months...the bottom line is that he can talk for England but not play for England and I will lose all my remaining respect for the LTA if they grant him a WC. I can assure you, they won't.

1. Hmmm, after a year in the shadows would they recognise him now? Don't think so. If I weren't such a fan of tennis and the Brits, I wouldn't know who half of them are. Yes, WC are given based on last year's performance BUT they are also given on the basis of progress over the last 12 months. Ian has gained something like 5 Entry points in that time. That would put him down at British #40 or something. His ranking is incredibly overinflated...he will drop to about #900. The LTA will weigh up trying to help him defend those points against giving a WC to someone who has a chance of winning a round at Queen's AND winning points throughout the rest of the year...Ian cannot hope to win in that situation.

2. Just ask Andy from these forums to turn up for qualies...he is apparently a good player and you would get to meet him! Besides, I'm sure Tim will be strutting around the courts and Greg will be practising harder than ever after his dismal efforts this week.

Updated list, Koubek and Schalken out.... Phau and Monfils in directly. Since Gael is into the MD before the withdraw deadline, maybe someone else can get the WC last minute. Puerta is still on the list but I'll be shocked if he plays. But he can't pull out til he loses (or wins lol) in Paris.

God this is odd...before Monfils got in by direct acceptance there were 2 WC left. 1 was given to Josh Goodall and the other was to be given to the winner of a play-off between Parmar, Bogdanovic, Delgado and Hilton.

I'm happy with the fact that the LTA are looking to the future (Goodall is only 20?) but why on earth did they not consider Johnny Marray for the WC or PO? He isn't that old and his game is PERFECT for grass.

Now, with Monfils's WC being given up, hopefully it will go to Johnny - he deserves it. However, I guess it wll probably be given to the runner-up of the PO.

Nice to see they arent handing them out just to english players who have little chance of even winning a match! Blake is a good choice.

It looks like the organizers were still trying to give Agassi a wild card up to the last minute:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,5205-1640279,00.html
The Stella Artois organisers were desperately hoping he would come back for a final time, but in a conversation on Thursday, Agassi said that he could not make the trip and was — it is believed — noncommittal about his Wimbledon prospects.

My reasons for not giving Flanagan a WC to the main draw have now been justified :p

From serving for the opening set at 5/3, he barely won another game. Enough said. :smash:

Re. Jamie Delgado's wild card:

http://www.sportinglife.com/tennis/news/story_get.dor?STORY_NAME=tennis/05/06/07/TENNIS_Queen___s_Lead.html"There were four of us to play off for a wild card because the Lawn Tennis Association could not decide who to give it to," Delgado explained.

"I won my first match and was supposed to play Arvind Parmar in the final but it rained so we ended up tossing a coin for it and I won."
