Without think about titles in this moment, the brazilian tennis player Gustavo Kuerten affirm that wants take the opportunity to meet the new Pope Benedict XVI, next week during the Roma Masters Series.
"I'm crazy to arrive in Roma and be the first to visit the new Pope" said Guga.

"I practiced in the morning and also in the afternoon with Coria. This is a big tournament, the court a little bit more fast than the anothers clay courts, but it's ok and I want take the nexts days to practice against the others guys and challenger some sets with them"

In both MC and Rome he faces in the first round a guy that serves and volley :o That won't help much assuming he needs to play long points from the baseline to gain confidence :awww:

As I said before, there are no easy draws in TMS tournaments. If Guga wanted an easy draw, he should have entered small tournaments. He decided against this option, so he (and we) have to live with these kinds of draw.
BTW I haven´t heard about Henman for a long time. Does anybody remember his Monte-Carlo result?

Tim lost to Zabaleta at the 1st round in MC this year. he seems not in his best form too. still I hold that he is different from Ancic. his serve is not as strong as Ancic. Guga has more chance on returning.

hhhmm I didn't see the match, but Guga can't give up when he loses opportunities! He was leading 3-2 in the second set, had a break point, lost it, then lost his serve twice and the match:(! He has to ALWAYS stay focused, and can't afford to give away his serve like that! Now he only has one tournament left before FO, so he won't have a lot of rhythm for FO I'm afraid:sad:!

According to sjengster, Guga had difficulties with his movement and with reaching balls far from him:sad: and his returns are still not there.. It should come with practice and matches, but how many:confused:??

btw, did you notice that he hitted the ball in wrong way and the ball striked a baseline man in the 1st set? then Guga walked to him and asked if he was OK until he confirmed. Guga is always classy! :angel: :worship: :worship: :worship:

I´m not surprised by this result. The last matches already showed he´s still far from his best, so we have to be patient. We mustn´t forget he started practicing seriously only 2 month ago - and for sure it takes a longer time to reach the level of the highly competitive atp-tour again. So I´m still optimistic for the future, but I´m prepared to wait a bit longer for good results.

The red clay courts were playing fast, three-time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten was slowed by his continued recovery from hip surgery and Tim Henman effectively altered the pace of his attack to reach the the second round of Rome today. The fourth-seeded Brit scored a 6-3, 6-3, victory over former No. 1 Kuerten in the opening-round of the Telecom Italia Masters.

Henman, who has failed to surpass the second round in six of his prior eight Rome appearances, will play either Olympic gold medallist Nicolas Massu or French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu in the second round.

Staying back at the baseline a bit more than he has in prior clay-court matches, Henman was content to engage an erratic Kuerten in rallies. Playing in just his fourth match of the year, Kuerten is clearly still struggling to find his form after spending nearly seven months on the sidelines while recovering from arthroscopic surgery to his right hip.

The 1999 Rome champion showed flashes of the form he displayed in reaching the Rome finals three straight years from 1999-2001, but could not sustain his rhythm or range in his first career clay-court clash with Henman.

A vocal crowd shouted support to Kuerten, but Henman, who has improved his forehand in recent years, covered the court quickly and astutely played the angles to keep Kuerten moving.

The 30-year-old Henman took a 2-0 lead to start the match before Kuerten broke back to level it at 2-2. Henman broke for a 5-3 lead before serving out the opening set.

The second set followed a similar script. On match point, a disconsolate Kuerten dumped a drop shot that failed to reach the net.

Maybe he will play this year the post-Wimbledon European clay season (which he skipped in the last 2 years to prepare himself for hardcourts). Somebody mentioned he entered Sopot (not sure if this is true). This would be in 2 months time.
Besides that, there is - even for Guga - a live after clay season ;)

Yes, and Guga also entered Umag, a smaller tourney in Croatia:)! I think it was a very good idea, because he needs softer draws in order to progress and play more matches!!

Roma - Eliminated in the first round of the Masters Series of Rome, Gustavo Kuerten approved his aggressiveness in the defeat for Tim Henman, but admitted that he felt lack of physical resistance and that he is preparing to play well only in the next year.
"I feel myself very better than before, until better of the one than when I made the first surgery and this are always a good signal", said Guga in this monday.
"Then, what I want and I making is enter in the court and to play like I played four, five years back. If I obtain to play two or three games in this level today, four in the next week , more early or later I go to obtain to play thus during all the match."
Guga believes that he had ups and downs in the match against Henman due to physical resistance. "My physical level still is very down. In the second set I already was feeling tired. I play well at some moments and badly in others. I know that I have to improve the part of force and resistance ", affirmed the tennis player, that does not feel pains, only "weakness" in the right leg.
"I know that will be hard to obtain to go far in Roland Garros, but just the fact to be there playing and competing in the same level of the other players already very goes to be important mentally and personally also for my motivation", said Guga
"This is a hard year for me, where my main objective is to be physically well, to in the next year I only think about tennis. I adore to play, to compete and to be in the circuit, even in this period that I am. I know that I have possibilities to come back to play a great tennis, if not, I would be in my home" he said. :yeah:

i watched the first 6 games before they switched to paradorn (awful match)...and guga was mistiming his shots and misjudging quite a bit of tim's returns...so..i guess it's a matter of a lack of match practice...he'll get better! :D
