Good luck, Roger! Oh, I really want him to win this tournament, but most of all I want him to feel very secure and confident about his game. His previous losses to teens haven't hurt a bit it seems, as he went on his amazing winning streak after losing at the Olympics and though he lost early in Rome, he went on to win Hamburg a week later.

I like his ponytail, but I prefer his hair the way it is now, it's just so much more stylish. Ok, on good days as in TMC 04, Australian Open and most of Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo.

I like that the women are looking to the left and the men to the right in the poster. Hm, good to see Mauresmo there. Next year it'll feature Roger and Justine in Moya's and Mauresmo's shoes, though. Allez!

Makro you worry too much. Federer couldn't win a title before RG and still contend for it.

Very true. Also maybe good for once Rogi enter a tournament/slam being the least hyped/favourite among others (I mean comparatively to his other tournaments)?

Lindsay and Martina were surgery for the same injury some years ago :rolleyes:

I read in the swiss paper that his mother said that he already had it at the beginning of the year and that it never really stopped hurting and now he just want to rest a bit longer so that it wont get worse!!!

I don't mean to add to the general gloom, but I just looked up Plantar Fasciitis, and ...well...Roger should can the clay court season altogether and REST less he ruin the rest of his career. This is Really Serious Stuff and a Degenerative Condition.

"The plantar fascia is a thick ligamentous connective tissue that runs from the calcaneus (heel bone) to the ball of the foot. This strong and tight tissue contributes to maintaining the arch of the foot. It is also one of the major transmitters of weight across the foot as you walk or run. Therefore, the stress placed on the plantar fascia is tremendous.

When a patient has plantar fasciitis, the plantar fascia becomes inflamed (tendonitis) and degenerative (tendinosis)--these abnormalities can make normal activities quite painful. Symptoms are typically worsened early in the morning after sleep. At that time, the plantar fascia is tight and simple movements stretch the contracted plantar fascia. As you begin to loosen the tendon, the pain usually subsides, but often returns with prolonged standing or walking."

I've read the same thing in my Sports Injury book which also says this condition should be treated PROMPTLY because it can be extremely difficult to treat if left to become chronic. It also says it can be caused by excessive pronation in the ankle or ... incorrect footware....

The longer I sit w/this, the more I realize we're probably witnessing the beginning of the end of Roger's career. He's far and away the best player who has ever Graced the Tennis Court. (I could never care about men's tennis again w/out him. If something hurt Roger, it would just cut my heart out.) So, he can always pull out the Best of 3 tournaments. But after Australia, if he's challenged, I don't see that his feet will allow him to prevail in a 3 1/2- 5 hr. titanic final. In a 5 setter. Wasn't it his forehand down the line that was affected by his foot problems in Aus? And should he even be playing enough to keep his #1 ranking? Should he take this yr. off entirely to rest??

Minnie mentioned "incorrect footwear". Don't get me started on this, as they say...Exc. info. on this on a tennis-x.com thread after Hewitt & AA had foot injuries in IW. Hewitt's still not back after surgery on both feet & Get This - ATP just fined him $48k for pulling out of Miami late (after IW) for that surgery!! Computers make better decisions than that! (Does Roger get fined for pulling out of Rome for foot injuries?)

(Both Hewitt & Roger wear Nike shoes - in short don't wear them. Tacchini shoes destroyed Hingis' feet.) Anyway, there is a Major Problem w/tennis shoes. It's called idiot science. They know more about the science of adhesion than kinesiology etc. The shoes in plain English are too grippy. They force the player too stop when he/she still has too much momentum in their body to otherwise do so. This causes foot injuries & god knows what injuries to the legs, etc. (Like cars that brake too fast injure passengers.)

Luna, thank you. I should have said the end of Roger as we have known him. Even sail boats that hit the rocks, can be repaired & sail again. You just wouldn't have the same expectations. For myself, I'd be surprised to see him pull out a tightly contested Major. It may happen, but now it rests far more on his feet than his Magnificent Tennis - as did Australia as it turns out. Now he's rolling the dice, whereas before his Supremacy wasn't threatened by his body. And his opponents will run him ragged...Sure makes a good case for secrecy of medical records.

I wonder if that again points to his shoes as being a possible culprit.

I hope these feet problem don't wind up being chronic. His movement is so key to him playing well. I recall him attributing a lot of his consistency last year to his improved footwork. Also, I'd hate to see him lose the psychological edge he currently has over the other players, if they perceive he's got an achilles heel (no pun intended).

This is the first time he's taken 3 wks. off in a verrry long time. He said he had virtually no off-season last yr. And he's played more than any other player this yr. going into Rome. BTW, did you see AO (vs Safin)? Once Rogi showed big pain during that match when he step in hard. I wondered because it didn't look like blister's pain, but at that time I couldn't imagine arch problem. I thought it was his lower back or something... :sad:
Don't you think he was very nervous in every tournament this year? Sometimes he looked too agressive, having same rhythms, too tied, and made so meny errors. I thought it due to pressure.(Maybe it's true,too.) or due to something he tryed to do new, and alittle bit due to his condition.But still I didn't think about injury. I really don't think that we should panic like this guys.
I read Roger's statement on rogerfederer.com and did not get the impression that he is too worried about it. Roger has a very transparent personality, and always seeks to maintain direct communication with his fans. I truly believe that if this were some career threatening injury, he would let us know, or would at least sound more preocupied on his statement. However, this does not seem to be the case.
We must remember that Roger is under the best medical care in the world, which certainly increases his probability of getting rid of an injury. I think that the best thing that we can do now is post "get well soon" messages on roger's website.

And I wonder who will win this tournament. Nadal? Uh, he has guts, but I don't like his play style so much...not beautiful...
Gasque? I think it's too early. Pandy? :lol: His seed No.!!! on clay!! poor andy :o Safin? I don't think so.

I am still :sad: for rogerless Masters Series, but it seems like his feet are not as bad as we first thought :) . Hoping for speedy recovery.

Well, I think Nadal is the most likely player to win among the draw, but I don't want him to win here, because he is becoming a major challenger for Roger's dominance and growing incredibly fast these days (already N.7 in the world and the best player among Spaniards!)

Andy? He could advance a few or more, but not likely to win.
Safin? he is very unpredictable, but I don't think he will make it to the top.
Coria? Hmmm, maybe.
Fererro? Where is he???

Rusedsky. again he starts off against Seed No.1 (this time Andy) on clay at Masters Series. Poor Greg.

To cheer myself up a bit, I went over to the Safin section to see how they cope!! Talk about praying for rain in the Sahara.......

I'm also disappointed as I was hoping for a Rome final of Beauty & the Beast!! Clay court season has suddenly got a lot less interesting...I hope Roger just rests his feet & thinks about Wimby which is seriously in jeopardy if he doesn't.

Without Rogi and Juanqui [and maybe even Carlos] I shall cheer for Rafa, TommyR, Gaston, Nalby and Marat in Roma. ;)

But all that matters now is his health and how well he recovers. This injury sounds pretty bad in theory, but I agree that none of the statements made sounded too worrying so far, not even Roger's.

You all got some interesting stories as to why he's playing the way he has been ever since the beginning of the season. He has taken a month off later last year, TenHound. And wasn't it for the same problem? He skipped Basel, Madrid and Paris. I guess that's where everything began.

I truly hope it doesn't turn out to be cronic, as that would be a real bogus! I wish him the best and full recovery soon enough (though the more rest the better if that's what he needs).

Let's not panic over something that still is far away from something major, though all the concern is appreciated, panicking is not and will not help.

It is what it is. If it gets really bad he can have the nerves split like Lindsay did and won't feel pain. That is why she was able to come back. Really though, we should trust his statement. He knows what his doctor told him. If the doctor told him to rest and gave him meds or some treatment for it, then he should be fine and will let us know. All this panic is really sickening. Roger wouldn't be thinking like this so why should some of you?

This post was so good in the GM I decide to post it here too. I think it's great advice. I trust Roger's words that he will be fine after some rest. Think out it. He has already been off for 2 weeks so clearly he probably only has another week to go or so for him to be ok. Thank god rebound ace is over with for the year. :fiery: His feet will feel so good on that nice holy grass. :hug: Our season is coming soon. :)

Hi Silvy! Honestly...I really don't care who wins now here in Rome...my mind is already in Hamburg and most importantly RG!!! I'll probbaly ended up cheering for Henman (is he still in the tournament though? :o )or Andre (it's nice to see him doing so well on clay at this age really) or even Ferrer (having someone new or relatively unhyped to win will be nice ;) ) Well...if I'm not wrong and the trend continues, I'd just jinxed all of them and they will all pack their bags tonight :tape:

It's usual for Gaudio, but he had played a lot of tennis lately too and him winning a title last week is good enough for me. Though yes what he showd in the last match was rather pathetic.

Nadal at last. 5-7 6-1 6-1. Nadal didn't allow Stepanek to have a single break point in both 2nd and 3rd sets.

Expected results really.

I think it's not just a tennis match, but also one of fist pumping contest :o ;) I try not to be so judgmental with all these little behaviours on court and just focus on the tennis but I really do find it extremely annoying to watch.

Just too solid and too tough in every aspect Nadal.

Yes So sad the public started to be on Rafa side. It helped him a lot and also he was quite lucky.
Im HAPPY Guille showed how he can stay calm and mind cold even 2 sets under RAFA.
I think It was a rulete. It could be Rafa ior Guilee, Of course, all souls wanted to be Rafa cos he is the number 1 now for journalist. I hate them how they change.
Even if I like Rafa and cheer for him against other players. will never cheer for him agains roger or guille or Carlitos.
And Im happy to say his game is powerful but I prefer roger's, with style, he doesnt need a service of 200 miles to get an ace, he doesnt need o all the force to put a ball on the edge and win a point.
