To all my fellow Federer Express fans and friends:

I am sorry I have been out of touch but I have been very busy this last week and hence have not had time to tell each one of you seperately that I will be away for one week with no internet connection. I figured this would be the fastest and easiest way to tell everyone so I am sorry I didnt have the time to PM everyone.

See you next Monday :wavey:

hi, Susanne! :wavey:

yes i did. 3 weeks is too short esp. as flying to Asia is too long, but it was fun, even in those hot & humid temps.
my hubby played golf and i played tennis on hardcourt, it was like playing inside an oven!
but the food was great (i can't get seafood that fresh over here) and the mangoes were sweet like ambrosia.
and of course seeing my family (and old friends) was the big highlight.

Thanks for all your wishes everyone, the trip was awesome  but I must say hearing the news of Roger's withdrawal from Rome upon my return was anything but awesome :(

I hope you all had fun badmouthing me :p

Mrs B. and I will be playing each other tomorrow on the clay- I will most likely get pounded and crawl off the court panting like a 90 year old geezer but I will try to lose with dignity :p

Tenhound- sadly I will not have coverage of any of Roger's matches until Wimbledon so even had he played in Rome I wouldn't have seen his matches. And you are too late I will be departing for the U.S on Thursday and will be travelling there for 7 weeks, however I will have access to internet connection there so I won't go totally a-woll like I did this week.

nope, we didn't do a match...he would have kicked my butt anyway as he's a hard hitter, but he sure has a nice one handed bh. *jealous*
but two lefties on court is fun!
it was hot today, about 29C, but not humid like Asia, and afterwards we went to town and had a late lunch by the Bundesplatz. Ron walked back to the train station and i did my errands.

Glad you two had a great time - you deserve everything, that coming your way ( with "you" I mean the both of you - itīs the one thing, that bothers me about english, there is no "ihr")

Btw. I had a great time too - because it was hot here aswell,my youngest had a water-gun fight with his friend,in the garden - and it wasnīt his fault, that the kitchen door was open - now was it?

Well, it sounds like a delightful time was had by both of you!! First wonderful news around here in awhile.

Ron, can't you possibly wait til the off-season to travel further? Look what happens w/a quickie trip to the continent?! Yikes!! As for 7 wks. in America... my condolences & apologies for what the reactionaries are doing to our Republic & its currency. It could get even uglier quickly, as they've just set up the mechanism to have the draft up & running in 75-80 days. They could well decide to do something to "motivate" that...Take care & don't expect too much. Tennis coverage on espn is a Heart Breaker. They showed all Roger's matches from when I orchestrated a call-in during Wimby last yr. til ~4round IW. But since, we're totally screwed.

Did everyone see the news today that Roger is going to be wearing contacts to enhance his eyesight?? I'm praying he waits til after the season to try them, rather than on dirt or before Wimby!! It makes sense that top level athletes might benefit from having better than 20-20, but given how destructive Nike shoes are to the feet, I wouldn't want anything in my eyes they had Anything to do w/!!

RonE

Thanks Babsi and Nocko.

Tenhound- the best time to travel is now. I am between university and work so this is the only time I will have for such a trip. Besides, it's the clay court season and I only get more and more frustrated by RG with every passing year so giving it a miss this time around might actually do me some good ;)

Hello Daniel, Luna and Rogifan.

I am now in Washington DC. I will be staying here for a few days and touring the east coast finishing up in Hartford CT. From there I am flying to San Antonio, TX then Las Vegas, then San Francisco. I will be going on a two week hiking and camping tour which starts in Seattle (flying to Seattle and the trip takes me through Mt Rainier, Yellowstone Park and Yosemite Park) and then finishing in San Francisco from where I fly back to Switzerland for a few days and then back home to Israel from there.

Ron, have a wonderful trip. I just had to apologize for my country, which has become a very forlorn & embarrassing place I'm afraid.

While you're in Calif. for hiking, the best guides to hiking & camping areas are books by Tom Steinstra. Also, when you leave Yosemite, pls. try to allow time to leave via the East Entrance. That's 2nd in magnificence to Big Sur. (If you can fit a day trip down there while in SF, you will see some of the most magical coastline in the world. It's home to Esalen.) Anyway, driving East from Yosemite - unlike the Westward entrance which is a long trip up through the Sierra foothills, you'll plunge down out of the Sierras entirely in just a few minutes. Right there is Mono Lake with ancient salt formations that citizens throughout the State battled to preserve. You can kayak there if you wish. This is an ecosystem known as the High Desert. If you drive 20 mins. South, you'll be in Mammoth Lakes. It's the big skiing area for L.A. in the winter. But May & September/October are the best months for enjoying the beauty w/virtually no people. If you're into mountain biking, it's a center for that in the off-season - though we've had a lot of snow this yr. 20mins. southeast of town is the Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. It's a lovely place to hike - in fact you can hike from there back into Yosemite Park - or take a horse trip there. You can also go horseback riding for 1/2 day, or 1 day trips @Reds Pack Station. It's an excellent outfit - does all the rescues for the Forest Service, and runs horseback riding trips all summer in the High Sierra. Enjoy. And Pls. Keep Us Posted.

Also, if you're not up to speed on developments in Germany check my post on the Hamburg thread. Essentially news is that Picture of Goering flanked by Nazi officers appeared on p.71 of program for German Open last week. It was in the section of the history of the club where the tournament is played. The text talked about how the exit for all the Jews from the Club in the Nazi years led to the "golden age" of German tennis. To my knowledge Becker hasn't said word one, although for those who don't know, his mother is (German- I think) Jewish & survived the war in a Concentration Camp. Responsibility is unclear, since Qatar Tennis Federation put it on, as most unfortunately they're stealing tournament next yr. Yesterday's art. in German press said that program was put out by organizers, so it's unclear. Also, unclear if the head that rolls is the head that's really responsible.(Link to article is on other thread.)

Ron, you're a powerful guy...first time you go away, Roger announces he has plantar fasciitis. 2nd time, unreconstructed Naziis emerge!! What next!!

Hi everyone :wavey:

I am now in Hartford, CT. I am having a very nice time, CT is so green and the weather is beautiful now.

Thanks again Dirk for all the sights and the Roger matches :yeah: We went to Gettysburg which is of course where the most crucial battle of the American Civil War was fought and Lincoln gave his famous address ("four score and seven years ago..."). We also went to see the Capitol of Pennsylvania and to the zoo and the Hershey chocolate factory :lick: I also got to see many of Rogi's great matches: vs Hewitt, Nalbandian and Ferrero in AO 2004, vs Andy TMC 2003 and vs Agassi Miami 2005.

Yee, Dirk's kitchen is fairly sizeable and messy :tape: I am sure he is leaving it that way in case Roger gets into a loooooong five setter he would finish cleaning the kitchen by the time the match is over ;)

Actually we ate out. ;) I will not be going to Canada on this trip- that will have to wait for another day. From here I will be going to San Antonio for a few days, then to Vegas, then to San Francisco. Then after 10 days there I will be flying to Seattle and will be going on a two week camping trip which will take me through Mt Rainier, Yellowstone Park, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite. I will be totally incomunicado between June 11th and June 24th and if I don't come back online after that it probably means I was eaten alive by a grizzly bear :p :tape:

Hello again everyone :wavey:

I am flying today from Hartford CT to San-Antonio TX. The last three days were awesome- on Wednesday I went to Boston for the day. Such a lovely city so full of history.

On Thursday I went to Newport RI to the International Tennis Hall of Fame :bounce:

It was an amazing experience! History sprang to life as I saw exhibits and watched clips of all the old greats from the past- Budge, Tilden, Perry, Newcombe, Roche, Laver, Emerson, Smith wow

And of course the modern era- Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Lenfl, Wilander, Edberg, Becker, Sampras, Courier, Chang, Agassi. I was like a kid at the candy store.

The best part was the exhibit in which our Rogi donated his attire and his racquet from his U.S. Open win last year. Yes, I saw the actual racquet, shirt and headband he wore in that match all of which were signed by him.

Wow, that was an amazing experience, I spent about three hours in the museum.

Just saw the draw for RG- it could have been worse but I am not too happy about it still, and even more pissed about Coria and Agassi always getting easy draws . Oh well, enough moaning, it's time for us and Roger to keep our focus and motivation. Lets gooo!!!!!! :bounce:

Hello again everyone :wavey:

I am flying today from Hartford CT to San-Antonio TX. The last three days were awesome- on Wednesday I went to Boston for the day. Such a lovely city so full of history.

You skipped New York! That's OK, you are smart. It's nuts here.

I hope you enjoyed the west. You went to some places I have always wanted to go (foreigners come and see more of the U.S. in three weeks than I have seen in my life ;) )

So the Hall of Fame is a worthwhile experience? Is it very big? I have never heard much about it, and even though I have been in the vicinity, I never have been. Did you get to try out playing on the grass courts?

Just saw the draw for RG- it could have been worse but I am not too happy about it still, and even more pissed about Coria and Agassi always getting easy draws . :p ;)

Hey MisterQ!

Yes, sadly I had to skip New York, my schedule turned out to be a lot more hectic than I anticipated and I figured for New York I need at least a week. Nuts is ok with me, I like nuts (preferably roasted ;) )

The hall of fame is a museum it is not THAT big but it is of fair size. It is very interesting with short videos of players from the past and present. I spent about 2 and a half hours there and saw all there is to see. I didn't play on the grass courts although I would have loved to- not enough time

Thanks for stopping by, come again soon! :wavey:

Thanks everyone

"Outstanding matters" eh? I thought Lia took care of that matter :tape:

Anyway, the trip was fantastic. We started off in Seattle, Washington state. There were 14 people on the tour incluidng our 2 guides. Our first stop was Mount Rainier (aptly named for all the rain  ). The first 2 days were MISERABLE with constant rain. We went hiking up the skyline trail on the mountain and the good news was it was raining up there. The bad news was- it was snowing :tape: A 7 mile hike plodding through the snow. I am sure many of you would have derived great satisfaction in seeing me fall flat on my arse time and again and getting my shoes and pretty much the rest of me soaked to the bone.

The next day was a little better as we went on another hike down in the valley. The weather had improved and the trail was beautiful. To top it off, when we arrived at the lodge we had SHOWERS!!!!!!!! A dryer was there conveniently also to dry off our socks, towels etc. It's amazing how much one learns to take the finer things in life for granted ;)

After Mt Rainier, we drove for 2 days. On the night of the first of those two days we stopped in a small campsite in a place called Kamiah in Idaho. It was one sleepy town but it was loads of fun going to the local pub and talking to the locals and playing pool with them.

The following day we stopped at the hot springs located just accross the border in Montana. A welcomed dip in the springs was exactly what my weary limbs needed. :)

We then finished the day setting up camp in Gradiner, Montana just outside the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

The next three days were spent gooing in and out of the park. On the next day I did a 12.5 miles (app. 20 km) 7 hour hike up Sepulchre Mountain with an elevation gain of 2500 feet (or 750 metres). It started off in beautiful weather and very quickly it turned ugly with passing showers. Being up on the ridge, we tried to avoid getting struck by lightning so we had to go off the track wait for the storm to pass. This happened 4 times with each storm lasting about 20-30 minutes. The last one hit as as we were near the summit- and that time it hailed. Running for cover on muddy ground with a 70 degree incline with hails the size of golf balls pounding us- and oh yes, we also heard some bears growling in the distance as we were soaked to the bone yet again. Dream vacation isn't it? :tape:

Of course, what is a hiking trail without snow? Going back down, there was the ridge with a sheer drop to the bottom so we had to make our way through waist deep snow. My detractors yet again would have been highly amused as I slushed, slipped and plonked my way through all that slush.

The next days were spent seeing the famous geyser Old Faithful and wandering about the bacteria pools- deep blue in the middle and redish orange around the rim due to bacteria living in them.

After three days in Yellowstone we made our way south throough Wyoming to the Grand Tetons which is a lovely mountain range. I went on a very nice hike to Taggart Lake which overlooks the mountains there. We then went to Jackson where I went whitewater rafting. This is good fun and if you are in good health and not too bothered by being sent flyiing high up in the air as you breeze through rapids I strongly suggest you give this a try :p

The next day we drove to Craters of the Moon, situated in Idaho west of Idaho Falls. This area used to consist of active volcanoes which are now dormant a series of caves and interesting structures.

After the craters a long 12 hour drive awaited us as we made our way to Lake Tahoe, on the Californian side. I hiked on the shores of this magnificent lake with the snowy mountains in the background. It was like Switzerland but bigger and even more pristine!

The capper of the trip was then in Yosemite National Park where I hiked up Half Dome. 5,000 feet in elevation gain (1,500 metres) 17 miles roundtrip (~27 km) 10 and a half hours of hiking!. The last part up to the peak was almost a vertical climb as I had to hold on to steel railings for dear life!

After that exhausting excursion the last day was spent chilling out, the guides took us from place to place with the van (bliss!). The tour ended in San Frncisco the following day, and the day after that I flew back to Zurich.

Thanks Ron, great report :) :)

and thanks for the links - I want to go there again!!!!!

If the Americans could just restrict the developing in the most beautiful places.
As lovely as Lake Tahoe is - there are way too many houses and private properties around the Lake :(
