I only provide the cargo for the bandwagons and good for Ferrero that he is making progress.

It would be better in some ways if he wasn't seeded as seeing the Duck and him in the 1st round at RG would have been interesting.

As much as I liked both Lendl and Wilander they took enough clay tournaments off each other in that time, and they had the same record 3 RG titles and 2 finals, that they are in a specific category of their own.

I added Wilander before seeing this. Regardless, what you're saying is that neither was dominant enough on their own to deserve the label?

Very true, however with Guga's injury and poor results Ferrero kind of replaced him for a blimp. Yet his results on clay are very respectable, he had reached the french open semis twice and losing in one final 3 years straight, has won montecarlo several times and the Italian open as well. Not sure if he's ever won the Hamburg. He only really lost to Guga on clay during their short rivalry.

I mean those are the elite 5 of all-time in relation to claycourt tennis. That's the thing they never dominated like Borg, Muster ( who Nadal is not better than contrary to some ludicrous hype, not from you around here) or Guga.

This is of all time and since when has Ferrero's ability ever been questioned on clay? Only a fool would do that and you aren't a fool, wait to the end of his career.

As I said before those players that Chloe and myself that have been mentioned are the truly deserving ones.

It's like the word great that is very much overused, just like the term king of clay is.

I have no complaints and couldnt disagree with your assestment, nonetheless even at this point Ferrero is almost deserving of such title certainly prince of clay I guess ;) lol. Nevertheless it wouldnt be wise to claim otherwise, since for beginners his career is far from over, at least I hope so, and he's only won one Rolland Garros and couldnt defend it like the greats you mentioned did countless of times. Yeah I loved Gugas backhand on clay, Gasquet's kind of reminds me of his but Gugas was much better crosscourt, however they possess a similar mechanic when going for down the line. Such power and precision! :worship: I would love to get a hold of Borgs matches and his run at both Wimby and Rolland back to back, the same goes for classic wta players of the 80's, like Mandlikova and Classic Graf vs Navi and Classic Navi vs Evert.

"King of clay" is grossly overused, btw. I maintain that the last person who deserved the title was Guga. Coria was close, but by failing to win RG he never deserved it.

I agree and disagree. Agree that Guga is the deserving king. Disagreeing that Coria was close, he can't be closer than Ferrero.

Ferrero dominates in 2003, he won TMS MC, some smaller clay tournaments and RG. Coria dominates in 2004, he won TMS MC, more smaller clay tournaments but no slam. We know that no matter how many smaller clay tournaments you can win, that's no comparison to a slam. So Coria was great but he can't be any greater than Ferrero. Still I won't call Ferrero King of Clay, but he can be the prince.

Action Jackson

Of this current generation at his peak Ferrero is the benchmark on clay, especially since Guga's best days are behind him now and no matter how much spin on it, he is not the king of clay or prince, at least prince isn't overused.

Nevertheless it wouldnt be wise to claim otherwise, since for beginners his career is far from over, at least I hope so, and he's only won one Rolland Garros and couldnt defend it like the greats you mentioned did countless of times.

It's not just RG results that do it, but there are other factors as well and he has performed well at the other big events, but it's far from over and to put him at level of those greats, isn't right, though not as bad the Nadal bandwagon at the moment.

Yeah I loved Gugas backhand on clay, Gasquet's kind of reminds me of his but Gugas was much better crosscourt, however they possess a similar mechanic when going for down the line. Such power and precision! :worship:

Gasquet would like to be able to tie Guga's shoes at his best. Gasquet is his own player and what becomes of him one doesn't know.

If Ferrero were to win Roland Garros again this year, I'd happily place him in Guga's class on the surface.

Before last season his record on clay and especially at Roland Garros was phenomonal.

Chloe le Bopper
04-24-2005, 06:25 AM
Coria's win streak on clay was longer than Ferrero's. IMO he's been more consistent over a longer period of time than Ferrero. This week was the first time since RG 2003 that he lost before the finals of a clay event, if I'm not mistaken.

That said, he never won RG so his name can't even be considered ;)

Action Jackson

How about Nastase and Bruguera?

If I were to do the top 10 it of all time I'd have it like this now. It'd be a clear 1 and then 2, 3 and 4 are about the same, then 5-is clear, 6-7 would be interchangeable, then 8, 9 and 10 could be made up of a few people.

1. Borg
2. Lendl
3. Wilander
4. Kuerten
5. Muster
6. Bruguera
7. Vilas
8. Ferrero
9.
10.

Chloe le Bopper
04-24-2005, 06:27 AM
Um, just to clarify.. I'm not saying Coria>JCF. That would be absurd. I'm saying that I'd put him above him on clay if he had won RG last year, for the reasons listed above. But he didn't. So this conversation is kind of irrelevant ;)

Action Jackson
04-24-2005, 06:29 AM
Well Coria could easily become one of the best on the surface, but a RG title is definitely needed to give it any credence in respect to his other results.
At this stage I don't think Coria can compete with Ferrero when it comes to overall achievements on the surface, in future there is a chance, but not now.
