I don't think anyone would call him a favourite right now, but let's just hope he can play a few matches so he can gain some confidence and match practice :)

Definately - I agree.

well jazz he'll always be a favourite, at least for me :) I don't know why but I'm optimistic about the clay season, and i think he'll do very well in it. Actually i believe he's better on clay than other surfaces, including hard courts where everyone believes he's best at. wish the best for him anyway and as you said it's time to gain more confidence for the bigger tournaments...

This is definitely a great chance for David to win some matches, and to find some confidence heading into Roland Garros. I hope he makes it. Also I know this isn't the place, but Jose has a real shot at winning this title too..... with some of those players out. :p

David will be playing Nico Lapentti in the first round. I don't know how to take it, cause Nico's been playing really well lately, but he's still playing in Houston, he's in the SF. So, he'll have to fly to Europe to play...

Men's Look Forward: Estoril, Munich
At Munich, the biggest question is, How will Nalbandian come back from his injury? If he's in good form, Lapentti in the first round probably won't offer much resistance. Florian Mayer in the second could be tougher. His quarterfinal looks nice -- the seed is Srichaphan, though Juan Monaco might have a chance just because he's the only clay guy in that part of the draw.

We'd also pay attention to Rainer Schuettler, now that he's effectively hit bottom. Can he finally bring himself back to life? Mello isn't a great first round opponent, but he isn't bad, either, and Julien Benneteau isn't too bad in the second. After that, he would face Mario Ancic -- again, not too bad a draw, considering.

I just watched this match video this afternoon  Lapentti played great in 2nd set :yeah: His baseline is very accurate, especially the forehand. But I don't think he will make much trouble for David. He can't keep his form through all the match, and also lost many big points. Though.....i don't know how much hepatic virus still affects David :tape:

The draw is ok, Igor is in the other half...and if David can enter the semi-final, could be Ricardo, Jose or Rainer, this will be a real test.

Vamos, David :bounce:

This is an article from The Mercury newspaper in Tazmania, Australia

Nalbandian favoured for Munich
From correspondents in Munich
24apr05
ARGENTINA'S David Nalbandian has been installed as the number one seed for the BMW Open in Munich which starts this week.

The 2002 Wimbledon finalist will start as favourite for the ATP tour title as he bids to improve on his world ranking of 26.

"David Nalbandian is one of the top players in the world and I am sure he will prove that in Munich," said tournament director Rudi Berger.

"We tried to get Australia's Lleyton Hewitt too, but it looks like he will play here next year instead."

If there will be anything to show of course... It's still raining but I think it's not so strong anymore...

I hope we get some tennis for the spectators, but I personally hope David doesn't play til tomorrow. He hates last matches and always gets frustrated and irritated, and if you add the inevitable rain delays to those frustrations throughout the day, tonight could be a repeat of the ghastly Hamburg Ferrer match, where conditions were similar and he was last match on there too. The weather forecast is for warmer, nicer weather tomorrow and for the rest of the week, so I am personally hoping for a few matches and then rain so he gets to play tomorrow afternoon.

Until David loses  Which if he plays tonight will probably be tomorrow. :p Then onto Rome where the temperatures are in the 70's F according to the TV this morning - what a relief and a change from here where it's about 50 degrees and I'm even wearing a thick fleece jacket inside the Hotel!

Well done David...a win is awlays good....Hey Gravity...how is Argentina?

It's beautiful but turned very cold. I feel London must surely be warmer than Buenos Aires has been the last few days.

It's crazy how cheap everything is. I did a big shop at the supermarket yesterday and spent about £5. I've been to loads of restuarants.... enjoyed incredible lunches/dinners with wine, beer, alcohol etc. and have still spent less than £30 in total on everything. And all of the people are so nice, friendly and helpful despite my appauling Spanish.

In short: I'm having a blast :haha: The only bad thing is I'm struggling to get much work done. ;)

MY NERVES! But what a match...

I am so glad he won - I danced all the way home...

Second set: He was absent for 27 minutes  But I never doubted him - he just looked too good - some great shots (several drop shots to die for, some killer returns and passing shots and even a few aces!) and also physically he seemed okay! If I hadn't known he was just sick I would have never guessed...

Next round probably Florian Mayer - that's gonna be tough coz the audience's gonna support Mayer (except for some of course ;)). Whatever: VAMOS DAVID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK - seems Kyla has already done a match report so you don't need mine as well, - but as I've finally got Internet time - here goes. All in all I was pleasantly surprised with David's performance today, although that damned serve is - just - His first serve has got to be the worst in the Top 50 on the Tour, - but his groundstrokes (especially the backand) were excellent today. His lob and drop shot were working well too, and I was very impressed with his volleys - sometimes I thought I was at Wimbledon!!

He started the first set badly - lost his first service game and, having broken back, then got broken again to go 3-5 down. I thought it was all over, but somehow he pulled back to take the first set 7-5, and have to say this was all due to David's good play, not to any fault of Nico's. Second set (as Kyla said) was just a total lapse of concentration. I went out for a sneaky cigarette, and when I came back he was already 1-4 down. I'm pretty sure he "tanked" that set to concentrate on the 3rd. Must admit at this stage I thought it would go to Nico because David was getting tired. Have to say Nico was great - his baseline play is excellent and he chases everything - I was impressed by his game.

In the 3rd set, everything was pretty even. David broke to go 4-1 up, but one break is never enough for him and it got really nerve wracking. Had to laugh - when he lost his serve and went 4-4, I looked at Eduardo and he looked at me with a sort of resigned "here we go again" look!! But somehow he pulled it out. It was great for his confidence and everything after the bad run he has had - he was very nervous before the match and he is very relieved (though tired) now.

Have a day off tomorrow - so need to go and find a camera shop as the shutter is jammed on mine! To be honest I think the poor old thing has died (it is old), and hope I can talk nicely to someone generous for a new one for my birthday! But in the meantime I will investigate the shops to see if there is anything anyone can do.

Anyway - it's getting late here now, - so will love you and leave you. Btw - Kyla - where were you sitting?

Rosie

David's next opponent will be the winner of Florian Mayer - Peter Luczak.

Yeah I know it has turned cold....in fact I do think it was warmer here yesterday than it was in BA....and imagine...I have a trip planned for August. Its good news that everything is cheaper...I think I will have a blast too......btw...despite my Mother's influence...my Spanish is awful too

You'll love it here. Especially as a woman, the local guys are soooo helpful to the good looking female tourists in Buenos Aires. If you like good food, clubbing, dancing, friendly good-looking people, you really can't go wrong here. Everything is ridiculously cheap for a traveller coming from Europe/USA/Australia. It's just a pity you couldn't be here the same time as me. :)

Hi everyone!! :wavey:

And I am now felling terrible guilty cause I completly forgot about David.. :smash: -at me!!

Thank God he won!!! What a long match he played :worship:

Hope you're all ok..I'm tired yes, but very happy! I am having a great time!

Oh Btw - Right now I could just kill Juan Ignacio - can't believe he is out!

Take care you all!
hi, Clau :bigwave: good to hear you enjoy your hometown tourney!! I know it's very tired if you stick on all the matches of whole day, keep your passion all day long, that's exhausted!! but, year, very nice and exciting experience  also can't believe Chela is out already :( he won the title last year, and eliminated so early now..... anyway, still many good players are alive. Keep enjoying, girl!! :wavey:

Congrats to David for your 1st winning after coming back!! :aparty: I left the s/b after 1st set, the whole match just finished over 3 a.m. at my time....
Thanks for your report, Rosie and Kyla :wavey: and welcome back, Raquel

Good win David! I thought things weren't going too well for him when he was broken and Lapentti was up 5-4 first set. Good to hear it's him playing well for the fight back. Thanks for the report, Rosie and Kayla!

Keep going David!

Rosie said what I (and others) probably figured about the 2nd set. He knew at some point that he was going to a 3rd so he conserved energy ;)

Well having talked to a few people this morning I think it was a mixture of that and sheer tiredness  David is still very lethargic from the affects of the virus - his legs get "heavy" and he just can't run - well that´s what I am being told anyway. Mayer will be a hard match, although there is a rumour going round here that Luczak could win their match  The Team are not expecting great things this week from David to be honest, but hoping to perhaps go at least into the next round. It's all good match practice and experience. He is practising at the Club later but the weather is vile and I have to get my camera fixed so I might give it a miss. A friend of mine here says he thinks my camera is "fixable" so I will go off the the shops to investigate. David is quite happy and cheerful this morning though which is good to see and I am hearing great and positive things about the new Fitness Trainer who will start in June - I'm looking forward to meeting him :)

Just returned from the tourney and actually got to see David's practice. He really seems to be in a good mood :D! Which is very good to see!

Also: Luczak really won against Mayer! :woohoo: And I definitely think Luczak is more easy to beat than Mayer (also Mayer would have had all the crowd support coz he's from Bavaria). Would be lovely if he could make it to the quarters - three matches here in Munich would be just great! And maybe that lovely car for the winner which is in plain view on Centre Court is an incentive to David too? :D

For now I don't think its really relevant in what round this boy lost. normaly David could win from this guy very easely, but well his last match took a lot of energy and I think Rosie told her in reports taht he had troubles with the virus and that it made heavier for him.. so well guess it now all depends on how he feels today and if he is able to prefor as wel as he did last match. Of course I hope he can do that and make it easy to the next round.
