Why not a post about Safin's attitude in his last match against Acasusso? He even insulted Acasusso (Chucho took it as a joke but the public was very upset with Safin)

What did he tell him?

What did he tell him?

Safin said, "stop shooting the ball with the border of the racket ("marco", in Spanish), son of a bitch". In my view, Safin was trying to make a joke and Acasusso took it in that way. But not the public.

It's "cute" when Safin is obnoxious. Haven't you heard?

(that said, Safin is generally more liked by the players than Coria, at least so it seems)

Not for the Barcelona pulic. I don't know if you read Safin's interview (people are too busy trying to read into lines Coria's interviews) but Safin said:

- I don't care what the public said. If they don't want me in Barcelona, I won't come back here.
- The media talk too much about Nadal and forget other players (GOD īplease don't let Coria says so beacuse the forum will be flooded with posts against Coria)

Julio, you're not getting it. It's cute and funny when Safin is obnoxious! Because he's not really being obnoxious! He's just being his REALLY funny, REALLY charming self. This does not allow for the occasional whine or obnoxious comment.

"He surprised me a little," Safin said. "He was lucky on a lot of points, but was very solid, he served quite well and made no serious errors."

Can you imagine the outrage if Coria (or Roddick. Or Hewitt) said this?

LOL. I found this on another board, but the poster is reliable ;)

Safin: "Nadal is good, and what about the others?"
The Russian Marat Safin showed that personality that makes him unique. He got angry with the audience, the organizers, the media, and he didn't give importance to his loss. "If the audience doesn't like wha I do, the tournament can save the money they give me. I save my time and the tournament money, and everyone's happy", he sais after his double 6-4 loss against Acasuso. And when he was asked about Nadal, he burst: "Now it's Nadal, Nadal and Nadal; he's good, and what about it? what about the others? It's not ok because of them. It's not ok that the media and the Spanish audience make this"

Coria is a whiny dude BUT I think a lot of stuff gets taken out of context and blown up beyond belief. . . he seemingly can't say anything without getting a load of crap for it. . . yesterday he supposedly shouted to Calleri about missing a shot . . . in the heat of the battle, an intense and exhausting match between two guys who've known each other for a really long time, yeah he'll shout miss it . . . I can't imagine he meant badly by any of it. It was the moment . . . it was the fire of the match. But if you read other threads, he should be shot. It's bullshit.

The whole thing with Coria's attitude is that it is taking him down. His negativity is really bad for him. It's not his talent or his skill or his commitment that is ever in question really. Or his heart even. He gets so angry or down or something and negative shit breeds more negtive shit. Hamburg last year is a great example of that. It was miserable watching him play for the entire tournament. He was pissy from start to finish and uncomfortable and ugh . . . he lost. And even the matches he won weren't celebrations.

This year though, he seems a little better. Maybe he's adjusted to the marriage (had to be a distraction last year) and the physical training. But he is a stubborn little shit and that's what fucks with his game.

TGIF!!!

The sarcasm in this statement stings with some truth, but one has to admit that Safin's sense of humor and likablilty play a role in this. People can't help but eat it up with a spoon. I think a lot of people just can't stand Coria because of the look on his face. It seems to be in a perpetual state of annoyance and I think that biases a lot of people against him moreso than if he didn't have that look or the sulky movement on court. I don't know. I don't really dislike the guy.

He will win a tournament if he doesn't have to play Rafa.

I suspect a third set victory for Coria over Nadal is bound to happen.

well said....

for me, I like both guys, but what made me more of a Coria fan than a Safin fan was when I saw them at this years Hopman Cup.....was the first time I've seen a top 10 player other than Lleyton, so I was really looking forward to seeing 2 top 10 players playing against eachother....but once Coria fought out and won the first set, Marat just couldnt be bothered anymore, and that carried over to the doubles, where he did a great job of letting down Myskina too

but ultimately, it comes down to Marat being a more likeable guy...he probably complains and whinges on and offcourt more than Coria, but he's just a much more charismatic person

I can see I've hit a nerve with the Coria Crew.
It was not my intention to diss him, I just wondered if anyone knew why he looks so upset all the time
i dont think he IS upset most of the time, really--he is just focusing and taking each point very seriously. he is all-business on court and not fun and games; he is also more aware of little distractions than others because he's a perfectionist, and this is why his game has so many more dimensions than just about any player but federer (which is a statement federer agrees with)...he has a complex mind. being a perfectionist can make you demand more from your situation than is possible, and thats something to learn to deal with. but i'm glad he's that intense. sure, he could loosen up and entertain fans, but some of us think that's actually lame on the part of more 'popular' players. at least coria is honest about his desire and earnest about accomplishing it.

And he's not like safin, who tanks matches all the time cuz he's in a bad mood--Coria is brave enough to allow a loss to sting. I guess Safin is seen as more likeable because he seems more human, but that is more of a statement about other people's comfort level with that kind of 'i dont give a shit' attitude and discomfort with coria's 'i care too much' attitude. its much more en vogue to laugh at your own inability and wave to fans as if THEY'RE the reason you're on court.

if people ever saw mcenroe play, he looked much more agitated when he played, and was much more questioning of calls and downright abusive than coria could ever be. That's why he was known as 'the brat' but the tennis public is very strange about its obsessions these days. Connors and Nastase were also more narly on court...and they were 3 of the best and most loved players in tennis history. and coria's potential with his mind and talent and hands and feet and desire is right up there.

boliviana
04-26-2005, 06:35 PM
I agree that he is a perfectionist and I think he gets sooooo into his game that he doesn't see anything else. He also doesn't really care about what others think about him. I think it's very much about the integrity of the match.

All that said, it is easy to pick on him because of past behavior. He has done questionable things in his time and so there is less willingness to cut him slack or heaven forbid, see that he has in fact grown up a lot.

Chloe le Bopper
04-26-2005, 08:37 PM
Coria is a perfectionist. That was a good description of him. That's probably part of why I like him. I realize that people find perfectionists intollerable sometimes, because I tend to be one myself.
