I am soooooo happy for him and all that he has accomplished this year. It would have been real sad if he had lost it after having led by two sets to love. Now, he needs to rest and not play too much tennis till the French Open. He truly deserves this victory.

I think next week he will still be top 10 easily as he has the points from both Monte Carlo events (2004 and 2005), but as soon as they come off, it's going to be difficult the next time. He either has to win Hamburg this time as compensation or playing Rome. Or winning the French Open :p

Coria said after JCF that he thought Nadal was the best claycourter in the world. I would be surprised if he made too many excuses. He wasn't at his best today, that is clear. But if he doesn't give credit to Nadal I will be dissapointed.

Congrats Rafael, he deserved it. After losing that 3rd set and then when Coria got back from 1-4 to 4-4 in the 4th I thought Nadal would fade away but he stayed strong.

Felicitaciones, Rafa!! A well-deserved first TMS title over the best on clay! Rafa was quite nervous throughout the whole match and played below his amazing level in the Miami final but he managed to hold his nerve when he needed to in the 4th set, where both players played the best tennis of the match.

First 3 sets not good tennis fr either. 2nd set Guille practically gave Rafa the set and 3rd set Rafa looked too physically tired and Guille cut back on his errors and played more of his own game to stay in the match. Both had a lot at stake: Rafa to win his first TMS and not lose 2 in a row and Guille trying to defend his TMS.

Credit to Rafa for keeping his head and not getting down when broken back as Guille really stepped it up in the last set.

Guille let the rain throw him off and his complaints backfired on him towards the end of the first set and into the 2nd set.

Guille obviously not playing his usual top-level game, not just today but the whole week, but, like many players, MC was their first tourney on clay this year and it takes a little time to get into the rhythm. He almost turned it around and defended his title. It's good that both players were healthy for this match. At least Guille did not have to call for the trainer. One can never count out Guille.

It's good that Guille made Rafa win it and not give it to him -- good experience for Rafa.

Rafa proved he was up to the task and showed that he can win when he's not playing his best.

A great end to the week!!

Now onto Barcelona!

I agree, both players didn't play their best until the 4th set. But I am really glad that they both brought their game to the some of 4th set because it was good to see Coria plotting out points like he does so well and Rafael makeing some really great shots. As always, I really liked Nadal's intesnity and how he hustled for about everything through most of the match.

I thought that for a little bit in the 4th set we were able to see glimpses of Coria in the form that he was last spring, so I think that bodes well for him in the next few weeks.

So glad that Nadal steeled his nerves and pulled this one out. Now that he has a TMS win under his belt I imagine he won't be so nervous in another final and will likely play at the higher level that he is capable of and that he has shown in other matches. I agreed with the commentators that Nadal has room for improvement (serve, backhand, net). But he is still young and has stated that he does want to improve in those areas, so I think he will.

1 set: 11 winners 21 unforced errors.
2 set: 3 winners 23 unforced errors

I'm glad that Rafa could hold his nerves together and nail the match this time. It would be terrible to lose two important finals in a row...and after the third set, I seriously feared the history from two weeks ago would repeat itself. But he did it this time. Winning an AMS (after reaching another final two weeks earlier) is a solid proof that he's a real thing and not just a hyped fluke. and it would certainly be the first important title of his promising career.

However, I don't know if any of you notice the changes in Rafa's on-court characters. Before in big matches, like in DC final or even in AO against Hewitt which he lost, Rafa played like he had no fear, had ABSOLUTELY nothing to lose. But now it seems like he has some thoughts holding him back. I suppose it's the growing pressure that comes from becoming more successful and higher ranked. Even he admitted so in the press con after Monfils match. Like Rogifan said, he has more at stake now... so he actually has things to lose, unlike before where he's just a teenager coming out to have some fun and gain some result. That's perhaps the greatest advantage of being an underdog.

One good thing is this is a clear sign of maturity...where you stop being overzealous and reckless, and become calmer and more thoughtful (or sometimes, more doubtful), realizing your limit and overcome circumstances even with that realization. However, I can't help missing the old daredevil Rafa tho.

Absolutely. Which is why Sampras' six-year No. 1 ranking is so impressive. It's one thing to get to the top when you've never been there but I think the pressure is far more intense to *stay* at the top once you've tasted that kind of success.

Anyway, is it still too early to lock Nadal in for year-end TMC? ;) Congrats to Rafa.

Nadal showed that he had the goods today, but however, next time it could be vice versa and I don't think these two guys h2h will be one-sided at the end of their careers. I guess Coria should be just too good to let this happen and not only Nadal learns and becomes better, Coria too.
