Blake, Nestor Hit Houston Homers

On Monday in Houston, four ATP players traded the dirt of the clay courts for the dirt of the infield when they went to Minute Maid Park and took batting practice with the Houston Astros.

James Blake, Mark Knowles, Jeff Morrison and Daniel Nestor took part in a special batting practice session prior to the Astros game against the Atlanta Braves.

Blake and Nestor were the two power hitters, as both took balls deep and hit homeruns.

Nestor was first to bat, and after getting used to the pitches, he drove a ball that bounced off the top of the wall high over leftfield. For Nestor, it was his second career roundtripper in a big league park. Several years ago he homered at the Montreal Expos' Olympic Stadium, although that was with an aluminum bat.

Blake was homerless in his first effort, but in a second trip to the plate he put it into the seats in left.

Morrison and Knowles, the only lefty in the group, both reached the wall, but neither was able to get over it.

Astros Manager Phil Garner met the ATP players when they arrived at the stadium, and threw them some of the batting practice pitches.

During the hitting session, Astros’ players Morgan Ensberg and Chris Burke joined the manager in giving the players advice on hitting a baseball.

Once the batting practice session ended, the ATP guys watched the Astros take batting practice. They were then taken on a quick tour of the dugout and the clubhouse, where just outside the locker room pitcher Roger Clemens stopped to greet them.

The last ATP player to homer in a major league park was Mardy Fish, who reached the bleachers in Shea Stadium last September during the US Open.

Dupuis must be on fire because he beat a seeded player (#4) in the first round. This match will definitely be a test for James.

James won 6-4 6-1 including 9 games in a row to come back from 2-4 in the first set all the way to 5-0 in the second!!

He plays Lapentti in the QF, will be a tough match for James but he can do it. The points from his Houston QF last year came off already, that's why he's at 210 in the rankings. even if he loses tomorrow he'll be well into the top 200 again and if he wins the QF he'll be around 170. He's on his way up!

Blake is back

James Blake, whose career looks to be back on track after he endured a miserable 2004, struggled early against France's Antony Dupuis, at 31 the oldest player in the draw save for Andre Agassi. But when the 25-year-old Blake got going, Dupuis was soon a goner. Blake won 10 of the last 11 games and dropped just three points on his serve in the second set.

"It's amazing what happens when you stop making errors," Blake said. "I didn't feel I was out of it at 4-2. I think he got down on himself a little at the start of the second set and that definitely helped me."

Blake is trying to complete the "Houston Slam." He has twice won the River Oaks tournament and he was the champion of a Challenger event at Raveneaux Country Club in 2001. He was also a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team that beat Spain in the 2002 quarterfinals at Westside.

Does anyone remember the name of that sports psychologist that has worked with alot of tennis players? That's what James needs.

Oh James!

04-23-2005, 03:50 PM
I don't know if he needs a sports psychologist yet. He's still working his way back from an AWFUL year. It's not a surprise that he's playing great but having a hard time reaching the next level. Especially on clay. Give him a little more time and if he's still having these troubles mentally on hardcourt and stuff, then it might be a good idea.

I don't think James needs a sports psychologist (at least not any more than Robby, Taylor, or Mardy does). He needs matches, and he's getting them. He's going to play the Tunica Challenger on May 2nd (Indoor green clay) and then the Forest Hills Challenger on May 9th (outdoor green clay) and I wouldn't be surprised if he wins either or both of those.

Forest Hills has a Saturday night final, so its possible that James (and the others there) could still make it to RG on Monday for the first round of qualies, if they are planning to give it a try. We'll know in a few weeks when the entry list comes out.

Fee, according to the site Chris runs for James, he is planning on trying to qualify for RG. I hope he does, I think he has a good chance. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins either or both of the challengers either. In fact I might be disappointed if he doesn't take at least one of them.

I think Mardy is the only one of them that seriously seriously needs a sports psychologist right now. I think James needs more time, he's still on the way back. If he still can't close out tough matches 6 months or a year from now, then maybe.

Great news. What date is the Wimbledon cut off? I know that only the top 105 to 110 get straight in, right? Is the cut at 100? How many wildcard spots are there?

I really don't think James will get a WC for Wimbledon, even if his mother is English. Would be cool if it happened though.

2 players will probably use injury protected rankings (A Popp and Tursunov). There might be one or two more.

He's been injured again? Poor guy can't get a break.
