Best 50 players MUST participate in Masters Series: a joke ?

When you see the absence of so many Americans, or the last-minute excuses in Madrid, is this rule really serious. Are there some sanctions ? It seems that the Americans didn't give any excuse this time... Wake up ATP ! Time to fix the mess...

it would be a bad joke... I would always like to see the best players playing the biggest tournaments, but at the end everybody has to make his own schedule and should be allowed to make his own decisions.

With 9 compulsory tournaments + grand slams, DC and various other commitments its unrealistic to expect every top 50 player to attend every masters event.
Having said that, if the Americans dont put in the effort by playing the difficult clay events they only have themselves to blame if they crash out in the first few rounds of the FO.

well said WyveN, so maybe they should reduce the number of MS and make them really important, so that everybody attends them.
Must be a pain in the ass for a Roddick to go to RG, but it's good fun for everybody watching him getting upset by Mutis...

the sanctions would be useless, it's the schedule of some tournaments that must change !
i think TMS are too close to each other,
Madrid & Paris are very close to each other & it is in the end of the year !
Last year all top players were injured in this period !!

I don't think it is a rule that they MUST participate. It just means they can't substitute points from another tournament in the yearly rankings race.
They will not be arrested and handcuffed in Houston for not having shown up at MC.

From Madrid MS site:
"The ATP Masters Series are the gem of the men's ATP professional tennis circuit and the most important tournaments in the world together with the four Grand Slams (Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open). The 50 best players within the ESP must participate in these tournaments and they are automatically included in their qualification without exception. Furthermore, there are more prices given, more public attending them and a more press and TV coverage than in any other tournaments of the circuit"
Rod, go to jail !!

Just tournament hype. Read the ATP site rules. The top 50 players are automatically entered in MS events and if a player does not compete he is awarded zero points.
Rod, you are free to go.

Yep, could Fed take more vacations please ! In his form I think Marat could have won against Fed either, as he DID in AO (was it true or all of us were dreaming this day ?)...

You cant expect them to play every single Masters Series. It is too hard to fit them all into the schedule, and players should be allowed to give preference to tournaments they think they will do best in.

Don't they fine them for not playing unless they have an excuse?

Of course, poor Roddick was too hurt to play... but he did manage to play an exhibition match in Houston last week.

They usually play all 9, or somewhere around 7. Of course there are penalties if you don't play them. If you dont have a good enough reason, you get fined. Also those 9 TMS events count in your rankings, so if you dont play, you get 0 from that event and cant really make up for it. ATP ranking system doesn't follow the WTA one. Oh and KBF many players just skip some TMS events, and MC is actually one that a whole slew of player skip. Federer skipped it the past 2 years did he not?

Are there some sanctions? There are fines for withdrawing from any tournament (not just AMS), but they don't kick in until a player has withdrawn from his second IS/ISG or 3rd AMS in the current year. There is a fee schedule based on the rank of the player & the number of times he has withdrawn in the year.

Fines are more severe for late withdrawals; anyone who withdraws after the deadline must be seen by the ATP doctor on site to avoid a fine. All 13 players who withdrew from the Monte-Carlo main draw did so before the deadline.
