Let's see... Ferrero is badly out of form and he has very low confidence to boot and is not in the best condition. So I'm going to have to say JCF wins in two sets.

As much as I would like to see JC regain his form, it's hard to see him beat Marat right now when Marat seems to be playing well. So I voted for Marat, but I wouldn't mind seeing JC as a victor, either.

Safin's form is match to match, it doesn't carry over like most other players.

You said it and I can't argue that, but why the obsession with the whole rivalry thing?

Obsessed  I'm not obsessed. I like rivalries, and when great ones appear, and in this case, very infrequently, that makes me ever the more interested.

You're always mentioning them (rivalries), always looking for them whether these 2 players have a potential rivalry or not. That's just your perspective and that is why I asked.

True. But he certainly is playing better than he was in IW and Miami. He's had much easier wins so far. In IW and Miami, he barely eked out a win in the first match before losing in the next round.

But I agree with you that the level of his performance varies from match to match. I think he will beat JC here, but it wouldn't totally surprise me, either, if he just goes blah.

I never mention non-rivalries. Anyway, I rarely post on this board anymore. I don't know where you're getting the "always" from.

I remember the TF heyday that's all and more fondly than I probably should. I know you never mention non-rivalries, but you answered the question. I mean personally if I never saw the word rivalry it would be good.

It's like if Gaudio and Nadal win their next matches they'll meet in the quarters and someone will come out and try and claim it's a rivalry when it isn't. Note I am not refering to you in this case.

True but his match with Saulnier wasnt all that straight forward. Cyril had a lot of break point opportunities in the first set yet lost them all and Marat was able to take advantage of his first one. After that Marat got confident and simply outplayed Cyril. I am not sure what Ferreros level is right now but if he plays well he has a decent chance.

Rivalry or not, but anyway an interesting match and difficult to predict. Both men know the troubles of coming back after a dreadful year (Marat in 2003, JCF in 2004).

JCF's confidence or lack thereof will contribute considerably to the outcome. But the longer the match will last, the more likely Marat will win it.

Hard to tell. Ferrero had trouble against Novak, Marat cruised. They're both good on clay. They're both unpredictable. The h2h says it all.

But I hope Marat makes it. Ferrero is a good player and I wish him luck on his comeback, but not at Marat's expence.

Safin can beat anyone when he wants to.

RG coming soon, so I say Safin wins.

It would be so typical of him to lose in straights after dropping 1 game to Martin, however.

Marat didn't do a good job in Barcelona, he got BOOOHHH by the crowd and he said that if Spaniards didn't want him he would never return.

I guess he'll try to beat Ferrero just because ferrero is Spanish and Ferrero is on a mission to re-conquer his long gone throne.

I hope Ferrero wins... :D

I am torn on this match, I want both to win and proceed ;) Predicting is as difficult. Marat seems to have played well yesterday and normally does well in Hamburg, he might not like the cold, he certainly likes the roof ;) JC needs a good result to improve his ranking to be seeded in RG, I think there is slightly more at stake for him whic might give him the edge.

Reminded me of one "smart" question on press-con about extra-motivation for Marat to beat Finn player because of the rivalry in hockey between Russia and Finland

btw did you forget that Marat spent his youth in Spain and on freindly terms with many spanish players?
