The Monte Carlo final that never was.

The 1981 final was abandoned due to rain. Why they didn't just play it on Monday is beyond me but they denied tennis fans there what could have been a classic encounter. The two finalists were Connors and Vilas. Connors never won a clay title in Europe and was seeking his first. Vilas was seeking a second Monte Carlo title. Here is the head to head:1982

I am shocked this thread was not posted sooner. I can't believe they would cancel a final with two huge stars in it. I do wonder who would have won it though.

Yeah he probably would have won it, but it could have been close and a great match. Poor Connors the gods just didn't want him to have a chance to win his first Euro clay title.

How many Euro clay titles did Connors win in his career?

amazing that he never won even one, having the most titles in men's tennis history! well at least he can say he won the U.S.O. on clay... ;)

I did not know about this and just saw it on the past winners list as the unfinished match. Does anyone know why they cancelled and what happened with the prize money and all?

yeh saw this (as in that it happened, i didn't actually see the first 10 games) - insane stuff. Was it raining for the next few days/rest of the week or what?

Players needed to go, Monday was last day to try to finish it. Organizers was hoping for some date about 8th or 9th June after Roland Garros but that never happen

I think Connors played few tournaments on European clay apart from Roland-Garros (which he didn't play during his best years)

PS : I've seen there's a DVD of the final, 1 hour of tennis until 5-5 :p
