The most effective serve was Sampras's.

The most efficient serve was Kafelnikov's. It looked as if he barely exerted any force and got triple-digit first serves.

The most "elegant" is Henman's.

The most scientific is Roddick's.

The worst serve? Don't know.

Kafelnikov's yeah was :yeah: He touched the bottom of his back with the tip of his racket, so got huge leverage out of his elbow..

The most effective was Goran's actually. You're bringing into the equation some player's awesome abilities that back up their serves to make them very hard to break. Sampras fits that mould, of course he is more difficult to break than Goran because he can back it up better, but in terms of just the actual serve itself, placement, speeds, spins and power. Even Sampras said it was Goran's.

The most elegant serve is easily Michael Stich in his prime. The most incredible combination of technique and timing. It's like watching water run in a stream, so smooth and perfect. I'd have to put efficient and elegant in the same category since elegance is automatically going to make the serve look efficient (in terms of biomechanics).

Scientific? I have no clue what that even means.

Worst, can't think of any off hand, but there are thousands of players and I'm sure there are some seriously shitty serves out there, but I suppose you mean of the top players? It would probably have to fit under a least effective category, i.e. not able to win points off the serve itself, or even able to effectively gain advantage from it. Most likely some clay court specialists who are more concerned about starting off the point and then using their power ground game to win points.

Although I have to say that Sampras' second serve is the best in the business.

I'm surprised that many people are putting Joachim Johansson ahead of Roddick when they think of the best serves. I think Roddick wins more of his service games, but again it comes down to how they back it up.

Go to: http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/matchfacts/default.asp

and check out the aces and service games held stats, it's kind of interesting to speculate on them, but obviously hard to draw firm conclusions. I wish they had unreturned serves, and even winners off the 3rd ball/errors off the 4th ball (i.e. a very easy setup off the serve) as additional stats. But this isn't the NBA.

Universe Man, by scientific I meant abbreviated. Zabaleta and Mauresmo also fit into this category.

Unfortunately, I've never seen Stich serve.

When Agassi retires some time in the distant future, I'd like for ESPN to spend a day highlighting all of his major victories. I'd like to see that 1994 U.S. Open Final against Stich.

The worst??? for sure, I saw him in Viña del Mar and I told to a friend that he serves like Dementieva

My dad and coach started having me watch video clips of Sampras' serve at a pretty young age and had me sorta model my serve after him. When Serena Williams rolled around, my form became more like hers; so mine's a mix between the two.

I love Sampras' serve.

Roddick may have a booming serve, but I don't think his placement is as good as Pim Pim's. That's my own personal opinion, of course. I don't care if this is ATP, Elena Dementieva has the worst serve of professional tennis history. She's lucky to have such an amazing game outside of that.

The worst has to be Schalken, with all respect though ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the question was formed in present tense.

So, therefore a current ATP professional need only apply.

BEST: Roddick
WORST: Nalbandian

Have not seen Schalken's

rochus' serve is very good!!! have you ever seen him playing or do you only judge his serve over his height?

not very much but a few.
What I saw his frist match was 2003 at Hamburg first round.Maybe he changes a lot currently, but my first impresstion on him is he has no ace and avager serve speed.

David N's isn't ineffective, it's just not as quick as some. You don't make a Grand Slam final with a shabby serve...

Nalbandian's serve is not powerful but he has very good control, spin and placement on it. I think he prefers it that way. It's not like it's the worst serve. It's not something players always try to hit straight winners off.

Karlovic has the best serve overall but if you consider the height and all that, Suzuki is a good mention. I've rarely seen someone quite small serve so well.

I've never noticed bad serves before, but I'll go with Roddick as the best currently.

I think Joachim beats Andy on "best serve" matters. Andy's serves are all about brute power, hoping some would get untouched, and even if touched the reply wouldn't be that good, allowing for a winning volley.
But Joachim can get aces on tons of different ways.. he can get aces from 230Km/h bombs, or 140Km/h slices right on the line. I've also seen him put aces on kick serves..

Wayne Arthurs' leftie bombs seem to be destructive like Rusedski's once were.

Ancic has a pretty good 1st serve, but I'd say his 2nd one is the worst on tour. The biggest contrast between 1st and 2nd serve I've seen.

Takao Suzuki does indeed have an awesome serve considering his frame. He's a small guy but his serves are around 200Km/h and placed perfectly. Actually, it's like the same as Federer.

Nalbandian's serve power is not that good, but he hardly ever faults. And he places them quite well. Besides, he's the best receiver on tour. People speak about Agassi, but to me David receives better.

not the best, but Rafter deserves a mention

one highly underrated one is Hewitts....he wins a crapload % of points when he gets the first serve in.....during Wimbledon 04 alot of the stats for his serve (except the % in) were right up there with the top guys

only problem is his % if first serves in is always pretty low, and the 2nd serve isnt nearly as effective

Personally, I think Roddicks is the best.....its just an out and out match winner - gets a really healthy % of 1st serves in, and his 2nd serve still has a heap of pace too it, and rarely finds its way into double fault....very consistent

A very close 2nd would be Rogers

I think different guys can do better on different types of serves.
Like I think Goran, Pim Pim, Beker and Samprass has/had best flat serves,

When it comes to Slice serve I guess Johny Mac had a great slice serve (also Arthur ash, remember wimbledon final), another guy who is great at slicing ball is Roger Federer, uses it very judiciously.

Andy Roddick, Patrick Rafter and Stephan Edberg are the guys with best kick serves (Ljubicic is right up there too). Specially Edberg whose game was so much built around kick serve and Volley. Edberg was more a kick serve volleyer than just a serve and volleyer!!!!

Fed and JJ have the best slice serves. Rusedski has a good one too. Scud and Roddick have the best flat bombs. Lopez and Arthurs have the best "action (spin)". Ivan and Roddick have the best kickers.

Arthurs is the best in the world, no doubts about that
