Ferrero, Mathieu and Lisnard Complete Wild Cards

The Organising Committee of the Masters Series Monte-Carlo has just awarded the last three wild-cards for the Main Draw of the Masters Series Monte-Carlo, which will take place from 9-17 April.

After those awarded to the young French hope, Gaël MONFILS last week, the last three “guests” for the Men's singles for the 2005 edition of the Monaco event of the ATP circuit are:

Juan-Carlos FERRERO (Esp) winner of the Monte-Carlo Tournament in 2002 and 2003

Paul-Henri MATHIEU (Fra) member of the Davis Cup team and principal actor in the victory against Sweden

Jean-René LISNARD (Fra)

It is to be noted that the qualifying rounds will take place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April with top level players. The Wild-cards for this event will be awarded by the Tournament Organising Committee during the week.

No clue... is it tomorrow? The anticipation is killing me.;) Good draw please.....

04-09-2005, 03:23 AM
Goodluck JC! Great, I hope the draw is favorable to him. But hey, no matter how difficult the draw may be, Juanqui will do well here. Of course, I still prefer an easy draw.

04-09-2005, 04:19 AM
It seems so weird JC has to get a wild card into a event his a owned over the last couple of years.

Ferrero Forever

04-09-2005, 04:34 PM
wow a half decent draw

04-09-2005, 04:37 PM
If he can't beat Karlovic on clay there are serious problems, but Novak in the second round would be very tough - he has beaten Ferrero in his prime on clay, when he won Gstaad back in 2001. Novak is of course the man who managed to lose to Dent (??!!) in the first round here last year, but he should beat Mirnyi in his opener. Still, every extra win is gravy for Ferrero in the rankings after his barren spell last year.

User id 7816
04-09-2005, 04:52 PM
yeah, I mean if he wont beat Karlovic surely it's serious so I tend to think its not that serious and he'll make it....and if its Novak which is likely, its gonna be tougher, but if JC is up for it he shud be able to fight thru it, he really needs to get it going.

04-09-2005, 05:03 PM

true. karlovis should be alright, novak trickier....hmmm....i wont complain tho cos this is a half decnt draw and jc dosen't seem to get them often.

04-09-2005, 05:14 PM
but Karlovic is a big serve,i still worry about this match.

04-09-2005, 05:52 PM
I'm with you Luna Karlovic won't be easy for him

04-09-2005, 05:57 PM
it won't be easy...though it might have come much rafa in the first round :p

04-09-2005, 05:58 PM
true!!! :yeah:

Mount Goddess
04-09-2005, 07:39 PM
I think he should do ok.

:) yeah what he said.

This draw is good i think, not insanely hard but no stroll, but what AMS draw is right? Karlovic, i agree, on clay should be no problem to a player of JC's claycourt ability. Novak is dangerous and really unpredictable, who knows what this will throw up? And losing to Dent here last year is a testament to that.
But its good overall, i like the look of it :)

04-09-2005, 08:03 PM
If he doesn't beat Karlovic I dunno what I'll do. Cry probably ;)

Novak is going to be difficult.

04-10-2005, 02:30 AM
Not a bad draw... but karlovic has a good serve and JC doesn't tend to do so well against the big servers. JC needs to improve on the form he had last week against Nadal to have any chance going through a couple of rounds. I just hope he betters his Miami performance b/c that would give him alot of confidence.

04-10-2005, 06:20 AM
big serve on clay won't be fast as on hard,so i think JC has chance to beat the big guy.but Novak...that match will be difficult to JC.and 3rd round, safin?i don't know...
step by step, poco y poco, play your tennis better and better,JC!

04-10-2005, 08:25 AM
:bounce: VAMOS Juanqui!!!!! :bounce:

04-10-2005, 11:56 AM
not bad!!karlovic's big serve won't help a lot on clay.

04-10-2005, 12:20 PM
I like JCF's draw - he deserves a good one after the Valencia draw! Karlovic and Novak/Mirnyi and then possibly Safin. I think if JCF can get through to play Safin he will be confident after the first two rounds.

One round at a time though - vamos JC :bounce:

04-10-2005, 12:49 PM
yeah...not too bad a draw....AUPA JUANQUI!!!

04-10-2005, 01:05 PM
not a bad draw at all!

Karlovic won't be that tough I think :)
too bad, maybe Marat in the 3rd round....

04-11-2005, 05:02 AM
Good draw, bad draw - Time to win and hold a trophy Juanqui!

04-11-2005, 05:05 AM
come on!
I believe you can back

04-11-2005, 05:45 AM
vamos! :bounce:

04-11-2005, 09:57 AM
:bounce: 6-4 3-1 :bounce:

04-11-2005, 10:06 AM
Juanca 6-4 6-1 :D. The stats make me happy.

Points won on first serve: 26/30 87%
Points won on second serve: 7/9 78%

Karlovic won only 6/39 points on Juanqui's serve, 15%. And had zero breakpoints :D :D

04-11-2005, 10:10 AM
I've been gazing at the stats for while. *sigh* They are great.

Looks like a really great match from JC. Nice way to start off the tournament! :yeah:

04-11-2005, 10:13 AM
Yay  well done Juanqui :D
he played really well :woohoo:

unfortunately he is still wearing the bandage but never mind can't have everything :p

04-11-2005, 10:13 AM
Congrats, JC! Always good to win so quickly!

04-11-2005, 11:21 AM
:woohoo: well done juanqui :yeah: now keep on doing it

04-11-2005, 11:27 AM
Monte Carlo is your luck place..:pkeep going!!

04-11-2005, 11:46 AM
good result!!! now either Novak or the moment it looks like being can beat either of them! vamoooos!!!

04-11-2005, 01:15 PM

kool!....a fast match like this would do JC good!....playing Novak now, who had a harder match, no doubt JC can win!!...wont be so easy but who's the King of clay? ;)

04-11-2005, 06:15 PM
oooh yeah go jc! :woohoo:

i'm terribly xcited they might show his match on the highlights show tonight...i missed it earlier, i was at school...

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Congratulations.

Q. Apart from anything else, you played well enough, it seemed, that it wouldn't have mattered if it was five sets today. Did you feel that, too?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Could be. Could be much difficult because I had to win one more set, of course.
But, you know, for the conditions, was easy for us to play best-of-three because if we start best-of-five and it's still raining during two days, it's impossible to finish the match.
So we spoke with the referees and we thought, both players, we thought that it was better to play three sets. Is better, much better for us, because physically for the next tournament as well we have to think. That's okay.

Q. How would you sum up what's obviously been a very good week for you?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Of course, of course a very good week for me. I start playing normal tennis, normal level when I finish the match against Mantilla and Gaudio. You know, I think the key was my mentality was very strong all the time when I went down with Gaudio, you know, and Mantilla.
And I keep going all the time, you know, fighting and fighting. Finally, you know, you win a tournament and you feel very, very happy.

Q. Is that as well as you've played in a final, do you think?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I played the last two finals, I lost. So today I wanted to win, you know. I think I play unbelievable - no mistakes, a lot of winners all the time. I didn't leave him to come up, you know. I keep going, playing very well all the time. So I'm really happy for my tennis today.

Q. When you saw that he had beaten Moya, did you think that you had to be right on your game straightaway today?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think Moya, you know, when Moya is playing good, he's very difficult player to win. His forehand is one of the forehands, you know, very fast, you know. You run a lot.
Coria, I think he plays more like me, you know. He hit the ball strong with backhand and forehand, you know. He serve like me. So for me, it was better to play against Coria.
But for Spanish people, of course was better to play Moya, me. So I have to think was me, so it's much better.

Q. The fact that you had to impose your game on him straightaway, did you think that was very important?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, I spoke with my coach and, you know, we thought that we have -- I have to start very strong all the time, you know, and keep going, keep fighting more than him, you know, and play from the base of the line. Don't go back, you know, any time. I think I play all the time to try to go to the net to finish the point. I think I play with a lot of speed all the time.

Q. To defend a title of this status, is that very special?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: It is special because it's very difficult to win this tournament two years in a row. It's special because you have to defend a lot of points against the same players, the same good players as the last year. And, you know, you never know when you gonna play bad some day or, you know...
It's pretty difficult more on clay court because you have to fight more than hard court. So it's special.

Q. Were you expecting a tougher match than you actually had?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Maybe yes, because is final. But when you see the match, I think I play one of the best finals I played. So I think was difficult to play good for him because I did a lot of winners, you know, and no mistakes and was difficult to follow me.

Q. Last year you won here, obviously. Did you feel when you got to the final at Roland Garros that maybe you just had run out of steam a little bit in that match against Albert?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know, you know. I don't think so. I want to win the final, I wanted to win the final. But that final was strange because I had a lot of problems. I didn't feel 100 percent, and he was playing so good.
But, you know...

Q. How much restricted were you in that final by your ankle?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: That time in Roland Garros?

Q. Yes.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: You know, I have to put - how is the name - anesthetic, in my ankle and some other part of my body because when I start to feel problems in my ankle, I start to feel also problems in shoulder, abdominal and everything.
I think of course was the key to lose the final, and also the key was because he was playing so good.

Q. What lesson did you learn from last year's final in Roland Garros? Did you learn a lesson from that, and are you going to change anything this season to prepare for the French?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no, I gonna prepare the French Open the same as the last year, but I hope to be there without problems with my body. I will go there and I will try to play the same level as here and the last year in Roland Garros, and that's it.

Q. The fact that you lost that final, and, as you say, the Masters Cup as well, has that made you more determined for this year?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I have more experience in the finals. And when you lose that finals, that big finals, you take the experience and you learn that there's losers. So this year I will try to improve in this finals.

Q. How much of a surprise was it for you that Nadal beat Albert Costa, and why do you think he lost?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Nadal, he has a body like us, you know. He has not the body like 16 years old. So I think this thing helped to him a lot of.
He's playing a good tennis, strong tennis. He moves his racquet with a lot of spin, you know, and his forehand. He's one of the guy that's gonna be very up in the ranking.
Albert Costa, I think he hasn't play his 100 percent level, but Nadal played so good. I think Nadal is gonna play very good in a few time.

Q. Nobody will be very surprised if one day you will win Roland Garros. Somebody may be surprised if you would win, I don't know, US Open or even more if you win Wimbledon. What is your goal? What would you like more as a major goal of your career to do, I mean, to win a tournament nobody's expecting you to win, or to win the one you always thought you wanted to win?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well... I want to be No. 1 in the world, is one of my goals, you know. And then I want to win Roland Garros some day because it's one of my goals. Of course, I want to win US Open because it's on hard court and I would shut up the, you know, the other people saying that the Spanish people is not playing good in hard courts. So I have three goals (smiling).

Q. Before Roland Garros, what are you playing before then?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I will play Barcelona now, Valencia, Rome, Hamburg, not play Dusseldorf, and Roland Garros.

Q. Barcelona is more important than Monte-Carlo for you?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Monte-Carlo is very important because it's Masters Series. It's different, because it's in Spain and it's important as well. But I am not gonna compare, you know, both tournaments.

Q. Since when have you been feeling as well physically and mentally? You look very fit and very happy to play. At the end of last year, you didn't feel good.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Last year I had the problems in my adductors in the final and I had to put some injections last year to play the final. Moya, as well. So I think we play with the same problems.
This year I felt very good all the week. I didn't have problems, I didn't have many problems in outdoor. So I felt very, very good.

Q. Did you do any physical work before this year better than last year to prevent injuries?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. Last year I didn't have a physio with me, you know. Maybe I stretch little bit less than I am doing now because it's with you all the time. So maybe. I don't know. Maybe.

Q. From the program that you gave us, it seems like you're playing every week between now and the French Open?
THE MODERATOR: No, he doesn't play the week of Dusseldorf.

Q. What is your popularity in Spain compared to football players, basketball players?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know, you have to ask to the other (inaudible). I don't know. For the tennis world, I think I am very popular.

Q. Are you frustrated that the football players, even basketball players are more popular?

Q. That's okay for you?

Q. It's better?

Q. Can you still retain some privacy going about your business?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Sometimes you do. You have the privacy, but not like you want.

Q. You're very well-recognized?

Q. You still live close to Valencia, or you never think about going to stay in Barcelona because you like there, because is more private?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no, no. I will stay there because I have now the academy there. We put everything there. I have all I need there. I have family very close. I have the academy. I have the people that I love since 10 years ago. So I'm very good there.

Q. How many people work and play in the academy?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Like we have 20 players, 24 right now. You can ask to my coach, he is the director of the academy. He can sit here and tell you some things (smiling).

Q. Is there something you don't know about now with the experience you have, some years in the tour, some big level, something you really feel but you don't know about tennis? I mean the moment of tennis, the difficult moments of tennis or not? I mean, you know everything? You have a feeling that you can win wherever, you can beat whoever?
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I hope to know everything, I hope. But I think you can learn something always. So if I need to learn something, I will find it and I will try. If not, perfect.

Q. What surprised you in some way the last months?

Q. No surprise?

Q. I'd just like to say, as a sad Englishman who doesn't speak other languages, thank you for speaking English. You've done very well.
JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Thank you (smiling).

Confident Ferrero Ready for Safin Test
MONTE CARLO (Reuters) - Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero took another step back up the tennis ladder Wednesday, beating Czech Jiri Novak to reach the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Spaniard fell off the radar last year when a bout of chicken pox and niggling rib and wrist injuries wrecked his year.

The world number 69 needed a wildcard to play at Monte Carlo but his 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 defeat of 16th seed Novak fully justified his place in the draw and earned him a third round match against Marat Safin Thursday.

"I'm playing good tennis," said Ferrero, who won the French Open in 2003 and also lost in the final of the U.S. Open.

"All that has happened has made me stronger mentally, and I feel like I can beat anybody."

The 25-year-old was humbled last week by teen-ager Rafael Nadal at his home town tournament in Valencia and acknowledges that the road back to the top will be a rocky one.

"Because my ranking has slipped I'm coming up against a lot of good players in first and second rounds, like top 10 players," he said.

"Before, I would always play against them in quarter-finals or semi-finals. But I'm feeling better and my ranking is getting better day by day.

"I'm not in a hurry. But I'm aiming to get back into the top 15 by the end of the year and I will fight and fight for that.

"Sometimes it's frustrating but I am a strong tennis player and I knew that sooner or later I would be a good tennis player again."

Ferrero, twice a champion here, trails Safin 4-3 in previous meetings, with the Russian winning their last clash two years ago in Barcelona.

"It's going to be a good test," Ferrero said. "I've watched some of his matches and he's hitting the ball very strong."
anyone notice the optimisme?

it's gonna be tough.

Good luck, anyway :)

anyone notice the optimisme?
why wouldn't he be optimistic. if he was pessimistic that wouldn't be the right frame of mind to be going into his matches with ;)

and the new ferrero fan justs backs up jc's amount of optimism :rolls:

You know, nothing could be worse than last year. At least he's winning a few rounds now, and that's enough for me.

I'd rather he be optimistic than have his confidence plummet.

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. It's a long road back for you. Are you starting to feel that you're aiming for the top again?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I'm trying since the beginning of the year to playing well. But I suppose you know I meet with a lot of good guys in first and second rounds, like Top 10 players. Always it's difficult to play against them. Before this, you know, I always play against these guys quarterfinals, semifinals. Now in the first and second rounds are always very difficult.

But anyway I'm feeling better, and I'm better in the ranking day by day. We'll see.

Q. Is it a matter of confidence?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah. You know, the confidence is very important for the player. I mean, when you are winning a lot of matches, you take a lot of confidence and you feel that you can do everything.

Q. What parts of your game are improving, do you think?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: For sure mentally. I'm strongest mentally than before. All that happened to me give me a lot of ‑ I don't know ‑ confidence in me, you know, to try again everything, to make important goals. I think I'm doing a good job.

Q. Where are you now compared to the...

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Oh, it's difficult to compare, you know. It's really difficult. But I'm feeling better. I feel ‑ like always ‑ I feel like I can win anybody. So it's a good thing.

Q. Do you feel better with each match, or do you go up and down?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, of course I feel better. When you are winning good matches, you feel better.

But anyway I feel better since the beginning of the tournament and, you know, I'm trying to do everything in the court.

Q. Is playing Safin the right test for you now?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, it's a good test. Of course it's a good test. He plays really good also in clay courts. Today he won an easy match. And I watch some of his matches here and he's playing very, very strong, hitting the ball very strong.

But anyways I think I'm playing good tennis, and I will try my best tomorrow.

Q. How much of an upset was last week? I mean, he'd just come off the back of a huge final.

Q. To get off the plane, to fly to Valencia , then play you in the first round.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah. But anyway he came with a lot of confidence, and also he played three tournaments on clay court. For me, was the first match on clay court.

But anyway, the confidence, it's very important. He played really good and I played really bad.

But anyway he's playing a good tennis. He's very talent guy. He has a lot of power. He play good, so...

But this is disappointing for sure, to lost.

Q. You'd been striking the ball really well in Miami , hadn't you? You'd been playing well, striking it well, moving well.

Q. Is that as well as you'd played since you'd got everything out of your system, do you think?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, I think when I feel very good physically I can do everything because I move well, I can hit the ball good. And for sure the physically, it's almost 100% important.

So right now I feel very good physically, I'm telling you, since the beginning of the year. I have no problems physically right now, and it's that I want it.

Q. You say you're mentally stronger. How do you get mentally stronger? Is it a case of being patient?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, patient. This is the word, patient, and try to be a better player, you know. Before, like before that happened last year, I always be in the Top 5 or Top 10, you know. And I always have a great winnings, never worse than the last year, you know.

And, you know, start to be worse and worse. And, you know, have to start again and make new goals, different goals than before, you know, not winning Masters Series or winning Grand Slams , you have to be physically good and you have to be mentally again good.

So this is the important thing.

Q. I imagine the frustration is sometimes unbearable?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, sometimes is frustrating, but I am a strong tennis player. I knew that later or soon I will be again a good tennis player. I have to be patient. I have to be patient.

Q. Have you set yourself a goal in the ranking for the end of the year?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, I want to be in the Top 15. I want to be. But I will fight. I will fight.

Q. How long do you think it will take?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I have to take some time. I don't have to go in a hurry all the time. I have to go step by step, match by match. And I don't know when, but I have a lot of tournaments to get points, you know. Last year I didn't get any points, so I think I have lot of opportunities to get points if I play normal.

Q. When you won the French Open , maybe you thought this was the beginning of a great period of dominance. But you've had to come back almost, start again. What does that take out of you psychologically?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, after to win a Grand Slam , you think you are a better player and I was thinking this. But it start to happen, those things. Like you said, I have to start again everything physically because the chicken pox was amazing. And mentally it's very tough to start again. I mean, physically on everything it's really tough, but I have to do it to be again in the top, and I don't have another option if I'm gonna be like before.

I love his way of talking :hearts:

04-15-2005, 04:35 PM
my thought for the day:
Fererro and Semi-Final should be in the same sentence more often :)

MONACO (AFP) - Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero took a step closer to a third Monte Carlo Masters title with a 6-2, 6-3 quarter-final win over Italy's Filippo Volandri.

The former French Open champion, who won back-to-back crowns here in 2002 and 2003, now faces defending champion Guillermo Coria, the sixth-seeded Argentinian :bolt: (this is where we'll see where he really is at! im so so nervous)

Former world number one Ferrero needed a wildcard to play this week after a 2004 season wrecked by illness and injury but he hinted at a return to somewhere near his best with a convincing straight sets win over second seed Marat Safin in the third round.

Saturday's assignment will be his first semi-final appearance in over a year.

Ferrero broke Volandri three times in the first set as he opened a lead after 30 minutes and was soon into a 4-2 advantage in the second set.

He fought off three break points in the eighth game to lead 5-3 and that sapped the spirit of the Italian who had taken almost three hours to win his third round clash against Mariano Puerta on Thursday.

Ferrero punished (hehe i like that) him immediately taking the match after 73 minutes when Volandri hit a wild forehand long.

04-15-2005, 04:40 PM OMG OMG OMG I think im gonna cry!!!!!! :woohoo: way to go JC congrats  hes playing Coria!!!!!!!!!!!!

VAMOS JC, get to the final plz!!! ;)

Good, Keep going JC!

This is the interview he gave after defeating Safin.

J. FERRERO /M. Safin

6‑2, 6‑4

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Was that the big victory you were looking for? It obviously must do your confidence a lot of good beating Marat Safin ?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, of course this victory is very important for me. But, you know, I was looking for, you know, working day by day and training hard, so the results have to come. Finally, one of this are here, you know. We'll see what's happen.

Q. What did you do particularly well today?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think I played really solid all the time. No mistakes in important points, you know. I served with a lot of kick to his body all the time, you know. I returned his serve in important points very well.

So I think I played a complete match.

Q. (Translated from Spanish.) It was an important victory. You always had problems against him.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Translated from Spanish.) Yes, I remember the French Open on clay, I played very well this match. I played a complete match and I was believing in myself.

Q. (Translated from Spanish.) You were not confident before?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Translated from Spanish.) Well, when you don't win many matches, it becomes more complicated. But it's been a while I've been feeling well physically; therefore, I had some hopes. Now the results are coming.

But I will not be satisfied with simply a quarterfinal because I'm playing well, and I'm hoping to go further.

Q. Safin said that maybe you improve on backhand. Is that true?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. When I play well, my backhand is, you know, I normally do no mistakes.

I'm playing with a lot of confidence with forehand and my backhand. And I don't know if I improve, but I feel very comfortable in the court with both shots.

Q. (Translated from Spanish.) You played twice Volandri . What do you think about him?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Translated from Spanish.) He's a relatively complete player. I think what is dominating in his game is his very good backhand. Also, he played with a lot of confidence.

I think when he played again Canas , it was good for him to find his own rhythm, and it made him very confident especially on clay.

When he played against Puerta , Puerta is a player who puts a lot of rhythm into the shots, and he was able to counterattack very well against this.

So I didn't see the whole of the match, but what I saw showed me that he was playing very well.

Q. How tough was it mentally to be very low in the rankings?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I answered this question a lot of times. Well, of course it's difficult when you were here (indicating a high level) and you're here right now (indicating a lower level).

Q. What was your lowest ranking this year, lowest?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think 90‑something. I don't know, 94 or something like this.

It's really tough to see in the paper, weekly, to be 94. But, you know, I was preparing mentally for this, you know, because I knew that I'm gonna be pretty low in the ranking because I lose a lot of points last year and also at the beginning of the year, Australian Open and Rotterdam as well.

So I was preparing for this. And after this, I want to play with no pression, you know, and try to be in the same position as when I was 19, you know ‑ I was 90 or something like this, and to have a goal to get up in the ranking, you know.

Q. (Translated from Spanish.) You played twice against Volandri . Two years ago you were the favorite, but today who is the favorite? Is it important to be the favorite? Does it give you confidence or, on the contrary, is it a problem?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Translated from Spanish.) What helps is to believe in yourself. Being a favorite, it's more complicated. I don't think he is the favorite, and I am not either. I think it will be a match with a lot of fighting about the points and especially on clay.

I won twice against him, and he never won, so maybe that makes me slightly the favorite. But, anyway, it's different every match. I believe in my possibilities.

Q. (Translated from Spanish.) Marat Safin said it was very difficult to compare you, the way you were before being sick, and the way you are now, after being sick. What do you think?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Translated from Spanish.) Well, I always thought that when you had difficulties ahead of you, you were always gathering your strength to overcome them. Maybe that's the reason.

I am a player with a lot of experience; many good things happened to me and bad things also, like last year. I think when you are feeling good, you don't realize how good it is. It's only when you are sick or something bad happens that then you realize and you hope to become better again.

But I believe I'm a player with a lot of experience on the courts and also outside of the courts.

Interview after he defeated Volandri!

J. FERRERO /F. Volandri

6‑2, 6‑3

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Well‑played, Juan Carlos . Could you talk a little bit about how you won the match?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, before the match I was thinking that I have to play a solid match without mistakes because he is playing so, so well with his backhand, you know. He dominate a lot to the other players.

So, you know, I was moving so well in the court, you know. I arrive perfectly to almost all balls. I could make my game perfectly.

Q. You won over 70% of points on his second serve. Was that a big factor for you?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, I tried with his second serve to start dominate the point. You know, I did almost every game that he served.

So, you know, was perfectly for me.

Q. Do you now think you're playing well enough to win the tournament again?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I don't know. Maybe yes, maybe not. I'm playing well, and I'm with a lot of confidence again.

Tomorrow I know is going to be interesting match and very tough because Coria runs a lot and he has a lot of talent. So, you know, I played a lot of times against him; sometimes he beat me, and sometimes I beat him.

So we'll see tomorrow. Is gonna be a tough match for sure.

Q. Today you think that you were playing extremely well, or you think also that he wasn't playing at his best?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I think he start very ‑‑ a little nervous. He did a lot of mistakes at the beginning. I think also I was in the whole court moving so well and he didn't find any side to make a point. So both things are together, and makes me feel better and I go straight on this court so easy.

And also I think he's today ‑‑ he was today a little bit tired from the match of yesterday that was really tough.

But anyways I think he's a wonderful player. He has a lot of good shots, you know, and very good backhand. He can do everything he want with the ball.

So anyways I play really good match.

Q. This is your first semifinal since Valencia , almost a year. What does this do for your confidence? Does it suggest that you're back where you think you should be?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: For sure this semifinal is given to me injection of confidence. You know, I'm playing good again since long time ago, that you said.

But, you know, I work since a lot of time for this, you know, to make a good result. And then after this tournament doesn't matter if I win or if I lose, I know that I'm playing good again and I'll be ready to make good results in the next tournament.

Q. During this difficult moment you are out, was important the fact of Davis Cup that you didn't play, they prefer to yourself some other players? Mentally, was important or not?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Mentally, is important to not play every week. If I had to play Davis Cup , I had to play a lot of weeks. I play Rotterdam , Marseille , Dubai . And then if I play Davis Cup , it's four weeks in a row. Then Indian Wells , Miami , and here. So I had to make a break, you know, and was better to make it this week.

Q. But I ask about the Davis Cup final, the fact that you didn't play; someone else played in your place.

Q. Do you feel is was important?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no. Nothing about this, no.

If I had to play, was two matches, so doesn't affect to me.

Q. What about Nadal ? You were beaten so clearly. What do you think about Nadal ? You are looking for revenge as soon as possible? Some rivalry inside Spain between you, yourself, and him?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, the match of last week doesn't affect to me so much because I didn't play any point good, you know. Anyway, he played a normal match. He came with a lot of confidence. He did normal match. But anyway I played so badly.

Of course he's playing so good, and he's so up in the ranking. He has a lot of power and confidence, I would think right now, because he's winning a lot of matches anyways on hard court or clay court.

So he is very good guy, and I don't want to take a revenge because I know that we gonna play a lot of matches during the year or maybe next year.

So if I have to take a revenge any match that I lose again, so it's gonna be, you know (smiling)...

Q. (Through translation from French.) Do you feel again like a favorite now in the clay court tournaments?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: (Through translation from Spanish.) I consider myself as an important player. I played well here. I've been fighting during the former tournaments to reach that level, and I won against very good players like Canas , Safin ‑ that was an important win ‑ Volandri .

So I believe now I'm an important player and, yes, I can consider I'm one of the favorites.

Q. We have just one complaint against you. We are 20 Italian journalists, and lost. Just one Spanish journalist, and you won.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Luck. Very lucky (smiling).

Q. How can you explain to the public that Ferrero one week ago doesn't play well, loses very badly against Nadal , and one week after suddenly is in the semifinal? What is the explanation we can give?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, last week I was playing very well. I was practicing well, and I was playing before that match very well.

But this match, you know, I feel some pression of my public there in Valencia . I have to play very good, I have to show that I'm playing well, I have to show that I can play with Nadal , I have to show a lot of things. This give to me a lot of pression, and I didn't play any point good, like I said.

But before the match I was playing good. I was playing with a lot of rhythm, feeling good. But that match, you know, sometimes happen that you can't make any ball. Also because he's a left‑hander and it's very unusual, the spin and everything. So, you know, was happening this.

But I will tell you, I was playing good. It's not like one day I play good and tomorrow I play unbelievable, you know, I play so bad. That's not happen in tennis.

Okay...the guys are live walking on to Center Court. Its outdoors so obviously the rain has stopped.

They better not have the Rafa match at the same time! I'm sure they won't. People want to see both. Though I think that the international feed I'm getting will show it delayed if they do have the matches at the same time.

G. CORIA /J. Ferrero

6‑2, 7‑5

An interview with:

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You were up in the second set 4‑All. Suddenly, you... What happened?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Well, he looks like when I was 4‑0 winning, he looks like he want to lose these two games, no? And maybe I relax too much, you know, when I lost that service with 4‑Love very easy.

And then, you know, he knows that just was one break to recover everything, and he start to fight again. And maybe I didn't be the same aggressive as I was when I was until 4‑0, no.

So I don't know what's happen exactly, but he start to fight on 4‑1 and he played again good.

Q. Were you tiring? I mean, it was a problem of physical, no?

I think I played a good level in these four games, you know ‑ maybe at the same level as I was playing, you know, when I was pretty good on clay.

Q. You mean a top level at the time?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, maybe. With the forehand I was hitting the ball so well. Well, he move in the court very well and he arrive unbelievable balls and he return every ball. You have to win two or three times the point in the same point.

But anyway I'm pretty happy for the week. And, you know, today I couldn't play better, but I'm doing a good job and could keep trying to next tournament.

Q. How much of it is psychological at the moment? It was your first semifinal for almost a year. Is it a case of getting used to it again, I mean, the pressure of a semifinal?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no, no. I didn't feel any pression in the final (sic). I was trying from the beginning of the match play at the same level, you know ‑ easy, hitting the ball very hard with my forehand, try to dominate him all the time. And sometimes was good, and sometimes was not.

But I try all the time. I didn't feel pression because I want to play, you know, relax and enjoy myself in the court and that's it. {pression! i think thats so cute! altho u'd think after all these years, someone would point out that hes saying it wrong!!!}

Q. Do you think you'll be back to 100% by the time the French Open comes along? Are you quite happy the way you're making progress towards it?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I have a lot of tournaments until Roland Garros . I am going to try to be better and better each tournament. We'll see how I'm gonna arrive over there.

But for the moment, for the first tournament on clay, it's really good result for me. {someone should tell him he also played in valencia :rolls: }

Q. You said those four games were the best you've played for probably a couple of years now? I mean, that must be very encouraging for you.

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I played really good these four games, but it's not the best tennis that I played in two years, of course not. Because this week I played the same level whole time, playing good.

But maybe I was today more aggressive than the other days and I couldn't play better. But just a little bit.

But I play a good level, you know, the whole week.

Q. So where is your next tournament?

Q. And...?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: And then Estoril .

Q. So you need practice or games or both?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I need... I don't know. I have lot matches this year played. I just will relax and try to win.

Q. Do you think that Coria is more powerful this year, or is he the same? What do you think?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Different than when, last year or what?

Q. Is he more powerful with the forehand, backhand? Do you feel on the court the ball is more heavy, or it's the same?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: No, no, no, it's the same, the same.

Hmm? He played in Valencia? I guess I don't remember that. ;)
