Clay court is the most favorite for Spaniards and Gauchos that include these two gentlemen from Spain, Ferrero and Nadal. They met together in Valencia 1st round yesterday and young Raphael just thrashed JC in straight sets (each set very confortablly). These two men this year almost beat Roger on hard court, JC in Dubai and Rafa in the latest final in Miami.

Didn't Nadal have any fatigue at all from Sunday? If he meets Roger on Clay in the near future (maybe in Monte Carlo), he is very very dangerous for Roger. He proved what he can do on hard court against the world no.1 on Sunday. He is certainly the guy to be watching for in this red hot sand season.

ATP Statements on Death of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III of Monaco

Roger Federer, World No. 1: "I want to express my deepest condolences to the royal family and the people of Monaco. I remember how much Prince Rainier III embraced the tournament. It will be difficult to play there at this time, but we will do so to honor the Prince, the royal family and the people of Monaco."

Mark Miles, ATP Chief Executive Officer: "Today is a sad day for the ATP and men’s tennis due to the passing of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III of Monaco. As the base of our European Headquarters and one of the world’s greatest tournaments, the Monte-Carlo Masters, Monaco is our home. Prince Rainier was a loyal and passionate supporter of professional men’s tennis, and that’s certainly also true of his son and successor, H.S.H. Prince Albert. I join the players, tournaments and staff of the ATP in extending my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the royal family."

Horst Klosterkemper, ATP Managing Director Europe: “We are deeply grieved at the passing away of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III of Monaco and would like to extend our condolences to H.S.H. Prince Albert and his family. Monaco is a very special place for the ATP; we have had our European base here since 1990 and have had great support from the Grimaldi family for one-and-a-half decades. The ATP joins the world in mourning this significant loss today."

The scariest test is if Roger has to play him on clay, in best of 3!! Does anyone know if the Euro. clay court masters finals are best of 5 also? It wouldn't surprise me if Raffy were #1 now on clay Best of 3. We'll see what Roger & Coria can do. Anyone joining me in believing that Coria ducked out of Latin American clay court season, incl. his home tournament in B- A-, going to Marseilles instead, to avoid playing Nadal as he is still regaining his form from last yrs. surgery? (Roger is my All-time favorite tennis player, w/no one even close, but I do hope that Coria didn't lose his one chance to win Paris when he was overwhelmed w/the moment last yr.)

If Raffy is in Roger's half, it's a best of 3 match. Final is best of 5. Last yr. he rested rather than playing, so he has no points to defend.

Coria wasn't avoiding Nadal, he had a contract to play in Marseille and this year it happened to clash with BA, which was unfortunate. I'm looking forward to seeing them play each other. I wonder if Nadal can get any change out of Kuerten or Gaudio as well.

I really disagree with you this time. I ve heard coria interview and he says he has a contract with Marseille for 2 yeasr I THINK ( or one) and that he could not play BA cos the calendar moved.
Besides that Coria had a title to defend and he is better on clay, so I do not think he did not play BA to avoid Nadal.
Also I SAW RAFA -Gaudio and Rafa was completely lost. That was not his day. I think on clay nadal, gaudio coria , even martin, zabaleta, verdasco, JCF, has chances, all depends how they are, mentally. I Did not mention Carlos cos the South american clay season was not soemthing to remember for him. I do like Carlos a lot and I hope hell be ready for the european tour,

Yes, you're right and I was stupid to leave the house when he was losing early in the match and not tape it only to find out later that he had won the 5-setter over Guga! It was a real triumph for Juanqui! And yes, I meant to add him to my list, along w Marcelo Rios and Guga. Thanks everyone for the info. on Coria - that's why I asked. Friends were going down & were sooo disappointed that he wasn't there.

I appreciated Dirk's thoughts on clay showdown. I'm of 2 minds. Roger said in his post-match interview (Miami) that it took him awhile to figure out how to attack Raffy forehand before it spun too high. That's critical & will clearly translate to clay. On the other hand, Roger also said he depends on the "explosiveness" of his game, so I'm just hoping that he doesn't need those free points he's able to get on faster courts from his serve to prevail. I'll be greatly relieved when he gets through his first best of 3 victory.

Field for Paris looks weak this yr, w/neither Ferrero nor Guga (did you see his results today??) back to form & Nalbandian mumbling something about Hepatitis recently. And Coria a question mark - his serve hasn't recovered yet from his recent shoulder surgery. (I'm very fond of Coria & of course, Guga.) But Roger has to learn to move on Paris clay - according to ESPN crew it's different than clay @other Euro. championships & he was sliding considerably.

(I just don't want him to injure himself sliding. I'd be devastated if his all too brief moment of magnificence were interrupted by a major injury. (One of the greatest American golfers, Jack Nicklaus, just entered a Major Golf Tournament - at age 65!!) Brilliant tennis is so fleeting!!)

TenHound

Pls. let me clarify last post - I meant to imply that Roger was said to be moving badly on the Paris clay last yr.- sliding all over the place, out of control a bit unlike on the other clay courts he played. (Since F***ESPN didn't show him, I don't have a clue.)

tHANKS FOR THE DRAW
OOPS, ROER SIDE ITS NOT easy!
He could face also Versadco that is good on clay, do you think Gonzalez is better on clay than Nando Verdasco?
then he may face joaquim? I never saw Joachim on clay.....do not know if its the best surface for his game---

then the problem come with nadal and Gaudio
If gaudio is with the chip on his head "ON" he can win Nadal, Or of RAFA is ON he can beat Gaston
I t hink that is the worst part of the game for Roger.
Then Ill focus on the second part of the draw. I will love to see Guillermo Coria defending his title against Roger! Will be a good pre_hamburgo match heee eheeeee
Poor Moya, he'll face Puerta, who re apeared in good shape this year. I saw how Puerta def Carlos in BA.- (I was one of the few scraming for MOYA.. SCREAMING!!!! heeeeeeee

OOPS, ROER SIDE ITS NOT easy!
He could face also Versadco that is good on clay, do you think Gonzalez is better on clay than Nando Verdasco?
For sure Feņa is better than Verdasco ... But both are the kings of the inconsistency, then they would not be a problem for Rogi ;)

Hopp Rogi!!! :bigclap:

I should be able to see his first round anyway as it is against Greg :)

Gonzalez or Kuerten (if he is fit) will be a big test in the 3rd round but maybe it's a good thing he gets an early test in the clay court season. Hopp Rogi :)

Poor Silvy, having to get up @5am to watch the terrible tennis. Poor baby. Meanwhile in whatever is left of america, we can go into hibernation til Paris - and even then it's on F***espn, so there will be NOTHING but deodorant & pornography.

If i'm Coria or Moya, I just pray for a draw like this in Paris. All the heavy weights are in Roger's half. At first I was distressed, but from the point of view that this is just the first of 3 warm-ups for Paris, it's fine. 6 matches in 7 days - Jesus. Either he decides he wants to play his best throughout & it's great Gaudio & Raffy are in his half for practice - what better practice could he ask for; or he needs to go slow on clay & build up like he did last yr. to do well in Hamburg, or whatever the last warmup is before Paris. Either way, we need to remember that unlike the Masters Titles in America on hardcourts that followed AO, these are get reacquainted w/tennis on clay tournaments for him. Whatever happens is part of a process he needs to go through. It'd be great for him to get practice v. Raffy in best of 3 format, or maybe he decides to play 2 matches & go practice w/Tony - he's said he was going to see Tony after Miami.

Anybody know if Monfils or Gasquet are contenders on clay? First time they've let Gasquet out of doghouse he built himself last yr. in NYC - wondered when that'd happen!!

I agree that Guga's not a contender yet- Valencia results suggest he's not back in shape yet. May not even last long enough to play Roger; even if he did results should be foregone conclusion.

Fergie, you can't tape the early matches and watch later??

If Rogi wins his first match, that's great since he has no pts to defend. If he keeps going somehow and beats guys like Montanes [or El Aynaoui], even better. If he manages to continue and beat Verdasco/Gonzalez [what a terrible draw for those guys! yuk!] OR Guga [I expect him to beat Mario], then I shall be a little surprised. That's only R3! QF Costa or Mantilla could very well beat Rogi, if he gets that far... remember [even tho neither Costa nor Mantilla are playing that well lately] Costa keeps knocking Rogi out of tourneys like Miami03 and Roma04 and Mantilla beat Rogi in the final of Roma03...

After that, it's someone like Gaudio, who is probably playing about the best on clay so far this year [having beaten Nadal in BsAs in a weird scoreline]... Rafa' there and a couple of other guys lurking in Rogi's half.

And if by some happy fate Rogi makes the FINAL, he could face Guille, who can breeze thru to the SF at least and then the Final where he w love nothing more than to beat the No 1 player [he wanted to do that last yr in Hamburg] and get his revenge.

MCarlo will show who's really there!! Rogi's first clay tourney since Gstaad.

Oh Im so nervous.
I know that roger said that when he goes to a tournament is to win, but clay,, since Gstaad... poor baby.
I hope Tony practise something with him but I think the meet will be after Monte Carlo ( he has 2 weeks free right?)
Anyway I know Roger can beat Gaston in any surface but on clay and with the autoesteem so high as Gaston has right now...... shhhhhhhhhh
Anyway Fergie, I prefer to wake up early than be working. I have to leave at 7:20 AM as toooo late.... So I want to tape the match before I go to work cos If not with delays ( weather seemd pretty bad yesterday in M carlo) I do not know what time to set the vcr)

Go Roger.

Do you think oponents see different roger on clay than on a hard court=? Mean clay especialist as Coria, Gaudio, Nadal......

Coria this year doesn't seem very strong in clay like the last year, I don't believe that he will reach to the final again ... But I would be afraid of Gaudio or Nadal

And yes, I will have to tape the matchs because this week I will work in the night :sobbing:

good question, silvy... I think those guys feel they can beat Rogi on clay [and so does Rogi] altho Rogi has beaten Gaston 2x on clay, in Gstaad and in Hamburg; of course we know Rogi "upset" Guille in Hamburg last yr and he has never played Rafa on clay so OJO!! :p

I can't remember now what Rogi said but someone said that the "main statement we should notice more is the fact that he say he is really confident to win the french because of his five sets battle against safin and nadal............
he was really pleased with the way he play the fifth vs safin and nadal...........!!! and he knows it s very important to win the french he konws it will be the difficultest challenge of his life.............he said... "

I think he also said that the Spanish and the South Americans are a threat cos they can slide well [glissade] and move well on the clay [bouger] and it will be very difficult to beat them.

He says that he will have to come up w a strategy to beat those guys.

After Rogi beat Rafa in Miami, I thought, well, at least Rafa gave Rogi a clay lesson that will serve Rogi well! ;)

If I remember anything else, I will post it!

Henman also struggling. Let's see what Safin provides here. The first major clay tournement of the season could offer plenty of surprise....

I feel for you!
Vielen Dank, Susanne.
Yes, I could catch the bus, and would have missed it if I had left home a minute later. I made it to my class on time which was quite boring today, to be honest. I don't know what I have learned from it  , but anyway I feel good because Roger won today!!

Yeah, me too. I'm looking forward to the Nadal- Berdych match. (3rd round?)
Nadal is likely to advance, but if Berdych stays that way he showed today, he won't last long. But, I hope he wins at least one more match!! Yes, Nocko. It would be interesting to see actually Berdych play Nadal!!

Greg's struggle on clay continues... Sorry for him, because his first round opponent this time was the most dominant tennis player on this globe. No chance. I hope you improve yourself on sand and get somehow a win in near future, Greg. You haven't won a single match on clay since September 2001. Good luck, Greg!! :)

R. FEDERER /G. Rusedski
6‑3, 6‑1

An interview with:
ROGER FEDERER

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Roger , please.

Q. Did he have you worried there for 10 minutes?

ROGER FEDERER: (Smiling.) Yeah, he did. Yeah, he did, of course. It's never nice to start the clay court season being down because you never know the reaction.

But I told myself, you know, You can be down a break, but to lose a match, him slicing me off the court, you know, I just didn't see that.

So I just waited for my chance, and once I got it, I took it, you know. Because the conditions were very slow so of course they were against him today. I took advantage of that. You know, his serve just didn't ‑‑ he didn't get enough free points. Even though he was maybe serving 220, 230, I still got the ball back quite comfortably today. I was a little surprised about that.

Of course from the baseline, now I've got more of a variety. So for him it was tough. He wasn't coming in that much. He was relying very much upon his slice, and that is a tough way to beat me.

Q. Do you enjoy being back on the clay?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, it's good. I'm happy I came here. Get the matches in, you know, see where I am on clay. I haven't played on it for almost eight, nine months now, so it's been a while.

But, you know, I feel like I can make the transition quite comfortably, you know, physically, I would say. The way I move on clay is very natural for me. But, again, the serve doesn't get that many free points as maybe on other surfaces and also, you know, you just have to be more patient mentally and physically.

It's just a different game almost. You have to get used to that. Just need matches to get used to it.

Q. From the crowd point of view, do you think it's more enjoyable, this tennis?

ROGER FEDERER: Because of the points you play on clay?

Q. Yes.

ROGER FEDERER: Well, occasionally. I still believe, you know, you have sometimes the long rallies and in the end, you know, they finish by let's say an error, you know, quite often, you know.

So I prefer hard court, you know, where I have the feeling that if you hit a good shot, the point's normally over. Where here, you get back, okay, you see great defense, but sometimes the end can be disappointing. It depends really on the opponents and, on the day, form.

Q. You are beating many records. McEnroe has got 83 wins, only 3 losses in the season. Is this record in the back of your mind? Would it be satisfaction to beat him?

ROGER FEDERER: No, it's not something I'm aiming for. You know, I'm more concerned about each and every week and match and tournament.

Of course, you know, I'm, again, surprised, the way I started the season. Of course after a start like this, everybody starts wondering, "Who in the world is going to stop him?" But sometimes it happens very quickly, so I have to make sure I'm well focused.

Now this is a tough season coming up, you know, big tournaments with dangerous opponents from the first round on. So I'd rather make sure I get through the clay court season all right.

Q. Greg was saying that for you to win the French Open , you may have to sacrifice Wimbledon , keep some in your reserve for the French Open and not concentrate so much on Wimbledon . What do you think about that?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, it's his opinion. I'm not sure quite what exactly he means.

But if you win the French , you know, and you feel great on grass, I don't see the point why you should leave the French after the first week and start preparing on grass. It's just a week more there.

Maybe you are a little bit more exhausted coming to Wimbledon , but the last three years I haven't had that problem for Wimbledon . I arrived on the grass disappointed because of my losses at the French . So I hope that's going to change, so arrive on the grass actually with a great feeling. That hasn't happened.

But, no, I don't quite get the point.

Q. I think the point he was trying to make, if you were to win the French , for you then to win Wimbledon , it would be better for you, for everyone, to have a bit more time between the events.

ROGER FEDERER: Oh, yeah. Well, it's the same here. It's the same in Miami and Monte‑Carlo ; they're very close to each other, they're different surfaces. This one is even different continents.

Of course if you play well at the French ‑ doesn't mean necessarily win it ‑ but of course the time is short for Wimbledon . But I still believe, you know, you've got one and a half weeks, one week at least, you know, so that should be enough because hardly anybody can practice more than that on grass anyways.

Q. What is the most difficult point to adjust when you move from hard court to clay? Is it the way you move or the bounce or...?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, it's just the way the points are constructed. You know, you feel like you hit a good shot but sometimes it can be the totally wrong shot because the guy's on the run, he slides, and he totally gets back into the rally. Sometimes you have to of course win a point not only once, but twice or three times.

The way you can actually counterpunch on clay is quite extraordinary, you know. I can also do it myself sometimes. And, you know, it's a lot of fun, you know, but at the same time it's quite hard to do it over and over again for both sides.

Some days it's extremely slow, like today. I think it's just tough because every different day, it's almost a different game. Because maybe tomorrow we have sunshine. Then again, the points, the conditions, the balls are going to be much quicker. To adjust to this every single day is quite difficult.

Q. The clay season is basically Monte‑Carlo , Rome , Hamburg and Paris . What difference there are between these four tournaments? There is somewhere where you think it's easier, one which is more difficult for some reason?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, the thing right away I realized when I hear this is that the French Open plays with different balls than the other three tournaments, which I find a little strange, but that's how it is.

Rome , they say it's always quite fast, you know. But last year, you know, I arrived and it was incredibly slow. Suddenly I arrived, I played a match against Costa , and it was incredibly quick, you know. So it obviously depends on the conditions.

Hamburg is the coolest one of all, you know. Here it's supposed to be the best weather almost, you know. But we'll see how it goes.

You know, I don't know. For me it just depends what weather it is, and then it shows how quick the conditions are.

Q. You mean "cool" as in cold, not "cool" as in trendy?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I quite started to like Hamburg (smiling). They have good places over there, so it's not bad, don't worry. You can always find good places, you know.

Q. I saw you broke a racquet at the US Open ‑‑ excuse me, in the US cement...

ROGER FEDERER: In Miami . I tried. It didn't work (smiling).

Q. Was it a test for your racquet, a test for your nerves, was it just to show that you're a human being?

ROGER FEDERER: No, no. I was just really, really disappointed, you know, with all the occasions I missed in the second set. I don't even remember when exactly I threw the racquet. I was just getting so irritated that I checked out what it can handle, you know. The strings were anyway at its end. I had to change the racquet. I said, "Okay, this is the best moment to do it."

Q. In the Juniors you were quite a bad‑tempered player. When you turned pro, you start to be cool again. Why this big change?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, I feel a little ashamed to throw around racquets and hit around balls on the court, you know, get the booing sometimes. I'm not in the mood for that.

So I changed automatically, you know, because of the respect towards the fans and the tournament and everything, I guess. That is one thing.

I also started to realize that it's not good for my game so...

Few simple reasons.

Q. We've seen some opponents of yours having some problems, Nalbandian , Henman . Which opponent do you fear more? It's Nadal or someone else, on clay?

ROGER FEDERER: You know, I don't play many tournaments, you know...

Q. But in your idea.

ROGER FEDERER: We'll see. I mean, the start of the season, you know.

I feel there's plenty of guys that can play great on this surface, you know. Definitely one of those clay court specialists, because they just feel probably mentally much stronger than on other surfaces, you know, and they believe more in their movements, they believe more in that they can beat anybody, you know, and that they are a threat to everybody, that they can win the tournament, where maybe they arrive at other tournaments and say maybe they can play quarters or semis here. They believe on clay that they can win the tournament here, and that is already quite a change in the way they play the match.

I think Nadal is tough on clay, the way he moves and his game is. But, again, he has to prove himself this year on clay. I hope he's going to stay fit all the way through, the last few years he missed the French .

Then you always think, you know, Moya and Coria . They're going to be in the mix for the big events. But also Safin and maybe Ferrero . You know, we'll see. I can't really tell because there's enough guys out there.

Q. Is patience the big thing on clay?

ROGER FEDERER: In a way it is, but you're not allowed to play too much on just waiting either, you know, because then you're going to do the running as well. So you don't want to do that too much. I think it's just at the beginning, first few matches you have to get used to.

Q. If you have to play Safin on clay, is it for you worse than to play him on cement? Because he said he would rather play you on clay?

ROGER FEDERER: I would like to play him on clay also, but I prefer that (smiling). I beat him on clay, two occasions.

Q. Hamburg and Rome ?

ROGER FEDERER: And Copa Davis , so three, thank you (smiling).

I don't think he remembers. Remember him, okay (smiling).

I am sure he knows ;) But there is no need for him to allow this fact to add pressure, the approach he takes publicly- just to get used to clay and then see what happens - is a very smart one. Good luck today!

I am glad he won today. :) Looking at the stat, however, I see that he gave the opponent today enough break chances, which Albert just converted once. The Spaniard did have a chance to force an upset. After 2nd round, the road to Final is getting harder and harder. Be careful, Roger.

I think he played better against Montaņes than yesterday. His forehand seemed so good and the only reason I can think of that the scoreline doesn't look so comfortable for some eyes is that he was not returning well, at least I thought so.

Montaņes played relatively well and pushed him sometimes, there were games (mainly in the 1st set) where Federer just couldn't do anything on his serve, so he was serving well and had "good forehand day". However, he made some stupid UEs to help Fed.

Federer's serve also looked good, though the percentage of 1st serves in didn't. I'm glad that he used all kinds of shots, going to the net sometimes, others using dropshots, some slices and topspins. His backhand was off here and there, but I wouldn't worry too much yet.

I'm glad by his performances and I'm hoping that there's no change in the weather, therefore making the court faster, which suits him better.

As for his next opponent, I don't even know who to root for. Probably Ancic is better for him on clay. How's his H2H against Gonzalez?

All the matches sound interesting to me, I'm definitely seeing everyone of them. I just don't know why did they put Coria and Gaudio playing at Court des Princes (sp?) and Volandri/Puerte and Davydenko/Gasquet in Cout Central. Maybe because it's Monaco and a player of Italy and France will draw more attention?

Well, from the glimpses I saw from Volandri's match today he seemed to have a bunch of people cheering for him.
