Lots of musicians died before their time, depriving us of great music, their genius minds could have given us. Which one is your favourite?

Lots of musicians died before their time, depriving us of great music, their genius minds could have given us. Which one is your favourite?

1) W. A. Mozart (1756-1791). Arguably the worlds greatest composer ever.

2) Charlie Parker (1920-1955). Jazz saxophonist, nicknamed the Bird. Ranks with Miles Davis as most influential musician of his time.

3) Brian Jones (1942-1969). Founding member of the Rolling Stones. Became the first Rock & Roll martyr after he drowned in a pool.

4) Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970). Worlds most influential, and arguably the greatest, guitarist ever. Suffocated in his own vomit after overdosing.

5) Janis Joplin (1943-1970). Nicknamed Pearl, Jopplin was one of the greatest sixties icons. Died from an overdose two weeks after Hendrix.

6) Jim Morrison (1943-1971). Charismatic lead singer of rock legends The Doors. Died from an overdose and was found in a Paris bath tub.

7) Kurt Cobain (1967-1994). Lead singer and guitarist of highly influential grunge band Nirvana. Commited suicide in his garage.

8) Tupac Shakur (1971-1996). Most influential gangsta rapper of the nineties, voice of a generation. Shot dead in Las Vegas.

9) Aaliyah (1979-2001). Omnitalented artist and R&B icon. Died in a plane crash after shooting a video.

Though they died too early, they lived to the ages of 45, 36, 40 and 44 respectively. This has given them plenty of time to leave a musical legacy to the world. My poll includes only artists who died at a very young age, with the exception of Mozart, and Bird. They are included both because they are icons of a tragic early death, and because I wanted to include musicians from different eras.

There are plenty more i can think of, The Allman brothers, Notorious B.I.G., Tommy Bolin, Cliff Burton to name a few. But alas, a poll can only include 10 options!

these five are close to my heart, in roughly this order:

Mozart :worship:

Janis Joplin :singer:
Charlie Parker

Jimi Hendrix :rocker2:

Kurt Cobain :)

Another big loss was Schubert, who died at age 32, I believe.

In that case I'd have to say Ian Curtis of Joy Division, who died at the age of 23 ... I am 23 now as well..!
And Tami Terrell, the soul singer who died of cancer aged 25...

How can you include Tupac on the poll without Biggie?

I don't really care for rap but Tupac brought it on every song. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind and spoke the truth like nobody else.

Cobain (voice that shaped grunge)
Hendrix (man, what sounds from that six-string)
Aaliyah (So sad, had a movie lined up and everything... )

I still say Courtney had something to do with Kurt's death..

Only 10 poll options allowed, mate.
And IMHO Tupac's death was a bigger shock as he was the more known of the two, and his music was, and still is, a lot more influential.

What about the rumours he's still alive?? It would explain how he keeps on releasing new material, even several years after his death! I think it's rather macaber!

Let's talk about music again! The deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, both motorcycle accidents yards from each other and about a year apart, were quite shocking too. They were lead guitartist and bass player for the infamous Allman Brothers Band. Luckily the band survived this bad fortune and perform up to this day.

Ok, was just going to go  at the fact Buddy Holly hasn't been mentioned when I realised that Patrice DID mention him.

Although not one of my favourites, he is undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians of all time.

Others I will mention are Ritchie Valens, Marc Bolan and Eddie Cochran

If going for the older when they died, but still died too young it's definitely John Lennon. From the list given in the poll I would choose Brian Jones coz he was the brains behind the early Stones stuff and was a musical genius. Jim Morrison would be my 2nd choice.

He was my second choice after Jimbo :yeah:

BTW curiously I met Charlie Parker not thru the music but thru literature, when I was a teenager I read a novel by Julio Cortázar called "el perseguidor" (dunno its title in english). After I finished the novel I thought it was marvelous, not only the book but also the life of Charlie Parker described by Cortázar... so as soon as I could, I got a Charlie Parker disc. His music was a great discover for me! :worship:
