When did everyone first become a fan of Lleyton?

07-21-2002, 11:03 AM
For me, I first took notice of him when he beat Sampras for his first Queens Title in 2000 but actually becoming a fan of his probably the US Open semis Vs Sampras in 2000.

Ever since I first saw him play against Pat in Scottsdale was it? I forgot it was a while back :o :p

07-21-2002, 02:38 PM
I think it was @ the US OPEN last year when he beat Sampras.

well when i became a fan of kim clijsters i read that she had a boyfriend named lleyton hewitt:hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
then i paid attention for his results and saw that he was in semis of indian wells 2001 :) :) :) but i saw him for the first time playing on tv in the french and i thought : yeah good player but not superb but then i saw him in queens andi was very impressed , now he's my favourite player by far :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I noticed him in 99' but I absolutly hated him then and then I found out he was dating Kim I hadn't a clue what she saw in him lol. But I have to admit I did cheer for him when Him and Kim played Mixed at Wimbly '00'
But I became a Lleyton fan at Queen's 2001 as I noticed he had cut that stupid ponytail off and I thought I was being rather immature having a blast at Lleyton as he was such a good tennis player and I got used to the emotion he used on court and I have been a fan since!

As y'all know, I'm a HUGE Kim fan, so it comes as no surprise that my regard for Lleyton can be traced back to her. :)

I first noticed Kim at the '99 Wimby, when she got to the 4th round as a qualifier. I though, "Hey, this chick could be good." Then I got to see some more of her when she came SO CLOSE to beating the Predator Part 2, er, I mean Serena, at the '99 US Open. Serena, of course, went on to win that  and I thought again, "Hey, this chick could be good."

As Kim was rarely on TV in the US, I didn't get to see her play, so she was one of those players I hoped was doing well, but she was always pushed to the back of my mind sort of by default.

I got to see some of Kim and Lleyton's mixed doubles matches at the '00 Wimby, and I thought they were adorable. Then I saw Lleyton in the US Open semis versus Sampras, and I really started to root for him.

THEN came the '01 French Open. ;) I loved the way Lleyton battled back from 2 sets to love down to beat Canas, even though Ferrero took him out in straights the next round. And I thought it was sooooo sweet the way he stayed to support Kim throughout the rest of the tournament.

And I was hooked! I've been a rabid Lleyki ever since. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

07-22-2002, 11:45 PM

Death to Ezel! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Or at least early retirement. :p

Ditto for the Williams sisters. They annoy the tar outta me.

I don't particularily like Justine but I would MUCH rather her than Serena and Venus! They're kinda of annoying just being them but it bugs me SO much that they win EVERYTHING  At least before they use to suck on clay and serena wasn't so good but now the world revolves around them

I actually can't remember... it's been a while though. I hated him at first, now he's become my fave :p

07-24-2002, 08:50 AM
Right back when he won his first ATP tournament in Adelaide as a 16 year old - I can't even remember what year it was!

I suppose at first it was mainly because he was Australian and talented. Then I watched him play several levels above his usual standard for Davis Cup and realised how patriotic he was ... and then Pat said Lleyton was his little mate so I was confirmed as a Lleyton fan forever!

I think it was during 2000 that I first started to root for him a little :p

I remember when he lost to Gambill at Wimbledon - pfftt what was that about? :p

The first time I recall seeing him on tv for a full match was against Corretja at the Masters Cup in 2000. I was rooting for Alex though, then later in Davis CUp for Ferrero and Costa.

SO he always seems to be playing people I like :o

last year when i started to see tennis, i saw a game of Hewitt,
and i sad: oh, he plays great tennis...

07-25-2002, 04:29 AM
From the moment they started talking about him as the next big thing. I think that was '98. Besides, I have a thing for Aussie men. I have been of fan of almost all of them, though none as much as Lleyton.

07-26-2002, 07:36 PM
I knew him since a few years ago and didnt really pay attention. He was lurking in the top ten but I didnt think he could make it to the top only because of his size. He proved me way wrong at the US Open last year and thats when I really became a fan

08-03-2002, 02:40 PM
Number 1 Kim, I became a fan when he won that Adelaide tournament too...but I can't remember what year it was either (I could work it out, but it's 1am here and I'm tired)

08-03-2002, 02:43 PM

I'm a fan of Kim and I knew she had a boyfriend who played tennis himself. I didn't payed attention on him. At RG I saw that he was watching Kim her matches and the week after RG I saw him playing at Queens and I thought well he's a good player. The week afther he won Rosmalen and I heard him for the first time talking about Kim. Since then I'm a fan of him also.

08-07-2002, 04:03 PM
when he won the us open last year... i knew he was kim's boyfriend, but i'd never seen him play before... i was so touched when he won it, and when he went to the stage and kissed kim: that was so sweet... :hearts:

I became to know Lleyton's name sice 1999,and he was the brighttest rising star at that time, but I didn't like him at that time.
I became like him since 2001 RG,totally love and support him since 2001 US Open, and since then,my favourite tennis player has been changed:I like Martina Hingis at most during the years 1998-2001,and my favourite players since then are Lleyton and Kim,I like both of them pretty much.

07-09-2003, 11:53 AM
I noticed Lleyton in 2000 I think, but I didn' t like him then. I started to like him after Kim' s speach at RG in 2001 when I realized that he is actually a nice guy! :hearts: And when he defeated Sampras at US Open in 2001 I was happy and I remember that he became my favourite then :)

I'm a fan of Kimmie for a long long time and in the beginning I never realised that LL was so Cute/good. But after Kim her RG speach I was watching him more closely and since then I'm a LLEYKI!!!

07-23-2003, 05:32 AM

First time I heard of him which was when he won that tournament in Adelaide. He was only about 15 (maybe 16) and I think it might have been his first ATP tournament. They showed some clips of him on the news and I thought to myself, this is the real deal, we are going to have another Aussie #1.

Cute thread!

I am one of the many who hated him at first, but early 2000, for some reason, I started liking him. I don't remember why. All I remember vividly is that it didn't take me Kim to force a like upon him... I liked him before it was announced they were together. So I think I was pleased to hear she was dating him. But I know with the relationship, I grew to like him more.

I was a late-comer... it wasn't until Wimbledon 2002 for me. I was randomly flipping through and saw the semifinal against Tim Henman. I was amazed by his overall play, and that was it. (It also started me on watching tennis a lot more than I used to.)

lley my love

:wavey: and welcome to tangerine dream...

feel free to post anytime despite the scariness.;)

That was a great match...my first Ll memory was of seeing a clip of him playing doubles with Serena Williams at the Aus. Open--was in '98, I think but I have a bad memory.

I thought they were pretty endearing. She was hitting the ball with far more pace than he was and making multiple errors and he had what appeared to be the build and strength of an 11 year old, but you could already see the amazing court sense, and the movement, of course.

They lost, but I was intrigued.

I then really began paying attention in 2001--he looked so crushed when he lost at Wimbledon, I started really cheering for him. That year, he seemed to get a lot better looking as well.:o

Finally, when I saw him live last summer, that's when I became really fascinated...started lurking on websites etc.

When I started watching tennis, Lleyton was one of the first players I saw and I just completely loved his game, and everything :hearts: I didn't even know Kim before i knew Lleyton! :p But then I found out their relationship I became a total Lleyki :inlove:
