Best serve/vollyer?

I chose Rafter, cuz im biased, just like the rest of you.

Oh ya, another note:
I didnt put all-rounders on this poll (Tommy Haas, Roger Federer, Marat Safin etc.), just pure serve/vollyers.

non of the others can actually volley really (apart from the Farmer), they just got a big serve which helps

Bjorkman is pretty decent but no where near top class.

& yes, i just forgot Mark & Richard! You see, i was just going through the top 50 in the Champs Race so i left them out by mistake. Both of them really can weep the hell out of some in this list.

I voted for Pat ;) and in 10 years time I will be including Marat in all my polls as well :p

Rafter, though I reckon he has retired as it's now Dec & there's no mention of him comping back next year.
In the past for me it was Edberg. Suppose McEnroe was up there as well, but he was never on my top list. Becker wasn't bad, but he was pretty unorthodox with it.

Okay, I admit it. Even after he retires, I will be putting Ferrero polls for the best active clay courter.

No doubt Pat. He don't hit ace that many, just serve and volley. Max is pretty good too. Pete is pretty good at volley but not half volley.

Meaningless poll, me thinks.. Serve&volleyers is a certain category of players, so it's not that we need to compare one single component of their games, we just need to compare their game as a whole thing. And then there is one simple way to compare - just find the best of them measuring tem by their success.

Notice Bjorkman has had no votes (or not enough to count anyway) and see that has been proved today as he is still an active player, whereas Edberg has been retired for several years. Yet he still beat Jonas today in an exhibition match - think the score was 6-3 4-6 10-8 (champion's tiebreak). Think that proves Stefan is the superior s & v player even today!!!

Pete has the best serve, but Rafter has the best volley. I think to be a serve-volleyer you have to have a good serve, having a good serve doesnt make you any less a serve-volleyer, it just makes it more efficient. I dont get why people say Rafters serve was nothing much, it was a very good serve, much better than Henmans anyway. So I will go with Rafter as he has good serves and good volleys.

Why isn't Stefan Edberg in this poll if other retired players are there? He's hands down the best since John McEnroe.

goran, pete, and greg have/had huge serves and didn't have to hit hard volleys most of the time. goran stayed back half the time on hard and all the time on clay.

Ah, azza getting all worked up because of the absence of his hero Philippoussis, who is in fact a much better server than a serve-volleyer. Anyone else find it amusing than in those Australian Open animations, Philippoussis' trademark shot is apparently his "missile-like return"? Because that really is the best part of his game, isn't it...?

In terms of all-time players, my vote goes to Rafter - a strong serve and great volleys, and because he didn't have a huge serve he did have to play more tough volleys than the big servers like Sampras, Ivanisevic, Rusedski et al. In terms of active players, it's a bit hard to say at the moment - none of them are great in every aspect of serve-volley, so I'll say Mirnyi is the best server and Henman the best volleyer. If Henman had anything even approaching a threatening serve, then he would be my first choice. Federer both serves and volleys well, but neither element is his signature shot like it is for Mirnyi and Henman respectively because he has so much choice of shot...

That's a good one. I watched his matches in Adelaide this year (which he won) and he barely missed a volley, almost every volley landed precisely where it should.

I second or 3rd the vote for Llodra. I'm a bit biased but I'll vote for Karlovic too, more the serve than the volley, but both are excellent strokes.

The only one that really matters at the moment is Tsonga.

Off that list I'd go with Sampras, then McEnroe (which is not listed).
