This seems tough to predict. Ljubo beats Spadea in a tight three setter, Nadal schools Verdasco 2 and 2. Normally, you'd think Ljubicic would overpower Nadal on hard, but I'm not sure what to think after those two scores.

Nadal is a fighter just like Spadea, but most people might think Spadea is better on hard. I'm not so sure anymore though, Nadal is having some pretty good results this year as well. I wish ESPN would show this, but I already know there's no chance. Unfortunately.

I can definitely see why people would pick Ivan just because of his serve and forehand, and because of the new aura surrounding him. I don't count Nadal out at all though, especially once the points get into baseline rallies. It's a travesty that most tennis fans in America will never see this one.

Rubber Ducky, if you win your bet, and have 30,000 vCash, will you be the vCash leader?

Nadal finally has a chance to go against a top player and test his skill after going deep at AO and getting the necessary experience under his belt. Barring into consideration that this surface is slower, that he hasn't lose a set, and Ljubicic going the distance with Spadea today - It's hard not to pick Nadal in this one.

Pipo, huh? Hey, Bad Gambler, do you guys make decent money in real life off betting on tennis? I'm assuming that some of these guys on here actually bet on tennis using real money. If Pipo can take $500 and turn it into 50K on here, he could do it with real money, no? Or maybe he does.

Yeah the general opinion before this year was that his backhand was the more steady of the two. The forehand was considered good, but it could go wild. This year however for the most part Ljubicic seems to have tightened his forehand which is a reason he is doing well so now he is really deadly from both sides and he has a great serve. He presents a hard matchup problem for anyone other than Federer (though no once presents a matchup problem for Federer).

Have you seen his matches against Federer this year? How has Federer played him. It seems like many of the sets have gone to tie-breaks. So, has it just been good service games and then a slight mental edge to Federer in those tie-breaks? There doesn't seem to be too much separating them in terms of score, but Federer has won them all.

No I haven't see their matches, and I wasn't really criticising Ljubicic. It was more like I was praising Federer. Also a win is a win so until Ljubicic can beat Federer I won't consider them on the same level though Ljubicic is closing the gap.

ESPN should have shown that match, it looked to be the best of the day. It's funny how Spadea has been the 3rd ranked American for some time, yet they never seem to show any of his matches. I can't remember the last time I saw him televised, yet I feel like I've seen Fish, Dent, and Blake a million times (not that I mind watching those three).

I agree, I don't really consider anyone at Federer's level, but I think he's beatable. I see Ljubicic as playing top ten (or top 5) tennis right now, but he needs to step up in a big event like this. The bottom of the draw has really opened up, so this is a good shot for him. I think after Nadal, you've got hopefully Monfils :p , but more likely Moya, JCF, or less likely Robredo. .

Federer will have a tougher draw to get through the top plus he just played three more matches than Ljubicic at the Pacific, so maybe he's got a good shot here. I do think Nadal can beat him though, although it will be tough given how Ljubicic has been playing.

I don't believe there's any possibiity that this will be televised in the states. However, if Agassi and Dent lose tommorow, then what would they do? Would they just show all women's matches or would they continue to split the coverage like tommorow? Even if they continued to split, they'd probably show Federer slaughter some poor hap over this great matchup :p

Either way, it doesn't matter. Although Coria might beat Dent, I would be very surprised if Agassi loses to Clement. Both could happen though.

I actually can't wait for this match. With the exception of Federer (who we expected it off anyway) it's the 2 form players of the year. I think it'll be a top top match.

Much depends on how Ivan serves. If he serves well it'll be tough for Rafa, Ivan will be getting a lot of cheap points off the serve and Rafa will have to fight for every point. Once they get into a rally Nadal has the slight edge, with his better footwork and more consistent groundstrokes. I really hope Rafa can win, I've been defending the accusations on this forum that "he's crap on anything but clay" for a while now, many have come from Ivan fans so I hope he shoves those comments down their throats :p

Yeah, I don't know why Rafa is even bothering to show up :( Maybe Ivan, being such a good guy, will let Rafa win. Coria does that with his opponents sometimes, so perhaps his great ability to share will rub off on Ivan too :)

Q. We don't know right now whether it will be Nadal or Verdasco. A couple days ago you said you'd rather play Roddick than Verdasco. Why?

IVAN LJUBICIC: Yes. I don't like to play lefties, but I guess I have no choice the next one; they are both lefties.

So I beat Nadal in Doha, was tough match. Was 3 in the third, but was really difficult. Obviously, I feel like he's better player now than he was the first week of the year.

I beat Verdasco in Dubai, but I saved at least one matchpoint ‑ maybe even more.

So it's tough. It's gonna be tough match for sure. They are playing huge topspins on my backhand, obviously with one‑handed backhand it's really difficult to manage that ball.

Verdasco is just great player. I saw him in Indian Wells against Andy and I saw him here against Andy, he has powerful forehand, great serve, backhand is great. I mean, I don't know why he's not better player than he is, I mean ranking‑wise.

Nadal, obviously he won two events already this year and the Davis Cup last year. He is great future of tennis, I hope, not present.

I still don't understand how Rafa got killed in the USO by Roddick, he hits his incredibly heavy forehand to the backhand side of righthanders 90% of the time, how the hell did Roddick handle that, I wish I had watched that match.

I saw it, and of the times I've seen Rafael play, that was the worst. He seemed nervous and just out of sorts in that match. He served awfully and returned even worse.

Was it his first match in Arthur Ashe?

Chloe le Bopper
03-29-2005, 02:29 AM
Yes, it was.

I imagine he'll still have difficulty returning Roddick's serve next time that they play on hardcourt... and given his own serve, in hindsight the bagel almost sort of makes sense. But hopefully it doesn't happen again ;)

Rafael actually calmed down around the end and was playing better, but he just didn't get into is quickly enough.

I didn't look when this match starts, which I will after I post this right-quick. But just wanted to point out that you have to think Nadal will get the kind of support Zabaleta did against Federer and nearly prepelled him to a win!

The raucus crowd seemed to rally around Monfils which in no way is partisan France. And Nadal carries that in-your-face demeanor which is likely to excite the fans.

I don't understand why this isn't a night match?!?

OK, so I understand that every little child around America is going to tune in to see Venus and Serena, the role models of women's tennis, play each other. But seriously, I'd rather see Rafa/Ivan at night than Dent/Mayer.

If ESPN really wants more viewers, they need to start televising a major foreign match AFTER a majorly hyped one. Then maybe people would tune and learn more about the sport.

They showed the first five games of Molik/Hardenne before running out of time.

First paragraph: :haha:

Second paragraph: Good idea. Because fans think Ljubicic/Nadal will be a good match and just becuse these players are from Croatia and Spain, they don't exist.

I know. But I wish that Molk/Hardenne had been the hyped match, instead of Agassi/Clement, which was really kinda disappointing to watch. But, since people are tuned in to watch Agassi anyway, why not quickly turn to a really good match, show a spectacular point ( Justine), and keep running the match?

Sorry. ESPN is completely rant-worthy. *looks sheepish*

I'm still hoping Rafa can pull it off-he's still the Upset King of Miami...maybe he'll look to hold that title.

I agree totally with this viewpoint and have ranted against how ESPN has handled their coverage in the past. But, I was fairly pleased with what they managed to put together in their limited timeslot yesterday (Monday).

You have to savor any non-American coverage you can get when it comes to ESPN. Like I said, all we can hope for is a setup that allows the fan to choose the match they want to see with cameras at each court. There doesn't need to be a commentator at each match, either.

I'm sure people were alot happier with what the Arabic network provided during the AO than what is shown on ESPN.

I'm absolutely distraught sky are cutting coverage to show england under 21's in the footy. I'll be cheering my boy on while watching the scoreboard though.

Just to light the fuse ahead of the big event....A few comments from the Croats on this board recently

"Nadal has absolutely no weapons to hurt good players on a hard court"
"Nadal is crap on anything apart from clay"
"Nadal can only do well in mickey mouse tournaments, Ivan only plays in big tournaments"
"Why have a poll asking who will win this match, we should ask how many games Nadal will win"

You people are going to be throwing up on an awful lot of humble pie tonight :D :D :D

Don't attack him for this, he's right. The people in Miami are mostly hispanic and tend to support other hispanic players. Nadal will have a lot of fans there.... more than Ivan, I'm sure.

You've been better recently, you did go through a phase a couple of weeks ago when you said Ivan would wipe the floor with Rafa on hard. Your fellow Croats are in for a major shock when Nadal keeps this match very close, I think they expect Ivan to lose a maximum of 4 games
