to socialize

Just to have a bit of fun with the players, and a bit of match practise, too. He doesnt take doubles too serious.
For him doubles is generally more fun, because he hasnt pressure.

so that he chalks up enough matches to make shamil T pick him for DC dubs duty...though even if he didn't he'd still get picked for DC dubs duty

and of course i'm kidding...

To give his poor stressed out fans, more opportunities to see him play!? The guys that he's lost against... a lot of them are very skilled doubles specialists. :D

To have the possibility to break more racquets ;)

I think it's a combination of socializing and match practice, like someone said.

I happened to sit down during his recent loss to Dent/Ginepri, and it was a real poor effort, to say the least...:) ;)

the only one with a slight idea of doubles court coverage was Taylor Dent, whose well placed volleys and aggressive poaching were making Safin's life miserable out there...Marat and Thommas were playing doubles like two singles players slapped together, and were being constantly caught out of position or even clashing onto each other trying to chase the same ball. .. but it was also clear that Marat was enjoying the moment and just having fun, besides having dozens of female expectators scream at his every good shot... ;)

oh I see... I wonder how could they win a title... ;) I mean, c'mon, between 2 of them they hardly have enough talent to win a club tournament... :D

btw, since Roger has bee mentioned in this thread, I think we have to move it to somewhere else out of GM before MTF police comes

PennyThePenguin

well. they didn't have much talent that's for sure. they won the title under dubious conditions...

Anyway, the question has been answered. It's good that he wants to socialize with other players and get some match practice, he's been in need for some lately. I just hope he hasn't tired himself out because he has a relatively tough match in front of him. But then, Hrbaty is playing doubles too (I guess he won).

Also he's one of the few top players that still play doubles every now and then and that's good to get attention for the category.

well it's ok if he plays to socialize... it's better than to waste time in night bars.

I guess, spending a bit of energy on his day off, makes him go to bed instead of wondering what to do (after 9pm). Marat  a very smart guy :bounce:

No, I have read somewhere some tournament directors put two singles players together to play doubles. They want to attract the audience to watch more doubles matches. It is okay if a singles player plays doubles but he should choose his partner on his own. Some teams are just weird.

That's odd. But don't the players get to choose before if they want to play doubles or not? Still, I agree that some teams are weird and they should get to choose not only if they wanna play or not, but their partners as well.

T. Johansson / M. Safin = One time only AO winners? ...

Q. You're one of the few top players that still plays doubles. How do you feel that's helping your game?

MARAT SAFIN: Not much (laughter).

I didn't really win a doubles match in a tournament since very long time. Trying to ‑‑ doubles is a little bit like a practice. You work on your serve, you work on your returns, you work on your volleys. Basically, if you don't go to practice, you go to play a doubles, let's put it this way ‑ and you get paid (smiling).
