Labadze unconcerned by link to match-fixing dispute

March 23, 2005
MIAMI (AFP) - Irakli Labadze opened his campaign at the 6.565 million-dollar ATP Masters Series tournament with a three-set win over Morocco's Younes El Aynaoui, then shrugged off suggestions he was linked to match-fixing in Austria.

"It was not upsetting, actually it was funny," Labadze said of his reaction on first hearing his name had been linked to a court investigation in Austria, in which a betting shop refused to pay 23,000 dollars US to Martin Fuehrer for a winning bet against Labadze.

The firm claimed Fuehrer was a friend of the player and knew he was going to lose, but Fuehrer sued the company.

Labadze indicated Wednesday that Fuehrer was just a casual acquaintance.

"All the players know him," said Labadze, adding that he first heard of the investigation when he was in the United States to play at Scottsdale, Arizona, last month.

He said he would be happy to testify before a court in Austria if required.

"I'm happy to go and answer questions," he said. "When I go back, if the court wants me to go there and ask me some questions, of course I'll go."

But Labadze said his three-set loss to unheralded Austrian Julian Knowle at St. Poelten last year was, unfortunately, entirely in character.

"I'm the kind of player, I can lose to anybody, I can beat anybody," he said. "I'm sorry I'm not consistent." Umm, we may know that, but why would you say that aloud?

No. He's honest ;) I don't think he makes himself look like an idiot. A clown? Maybe. But that is what he is anyway ;)

He has beaten Agassi before, so he isn't that bad, when the ball goes in, but you never know with him.

TF, it's just you.

Irakli has a wonderful sense of humour - he's a naturally funny and honest guy. I don't think he comes over as an idiot at all in this - just being true to himself.

I agree with the people here, I don't think he comes over as an idiot.
And why couldn't he say aloud that he's inconsistent? Shows that he's honest to himself.

Sorry, I meant also the answers about the investigation and that everbody knows Fuehrer, based on what we know. Not just the last answer :p

Maria, hi :wavey: I always want to greet you in the Safin forum, but the discussion thread always gets so long...

I think the allegations are true, and he gets too much credit for his victory over Agassi, before last year the consensus was Agassi went to China to get the appearance fee and tanked his first round match.

Nenad is a cool guy and Irakli is just a mad Georgian, so there isn't anything unusual about that.

The inconsistent thing was to justify his loss in the match fixing scandal, he had to say that to prove it was an honest loss instead of a tank.

How come every player knows Fuehrer? If so, Fuehrer is one lucky guy :D

They all bet on their own matches

It's all rigged. Federer is just winning matches and Slams and tournaments cause he bets the least.

Exactly, he prefers to take the money in bigger amounts and only a few times a year (first he collects prize and endorsement money to make one big bet), last year only 6 times and this year until now AO SF was sufficient (that's why he didn't want to take the match points).
