Hewitt pulls out of Nasdaq; Agassi to play

By Charles Bricker

Lleyton Hewitt, who would have been seeded second at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Key Biscayne, has withdrawn from the tournament, probably with an injuried toe. His representatives did not immediately offer a public statement, but he played with the sprained toe Sunday in a straight set loss to Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final.

His absence kicks Andy Roddick, the part-time Boca Raton resident, up to No. 2 seed, and that guarantees that Roddick would not have to play No. 1 Roger Federer before the final.Andre Agassi apparently will be at the Nasdaq-100 Open, despite having pulled out of the quarterfinals at Indian Wells on Friday with an inflamed big toe.

An Agassi representative told Nasdaq officials Saturday to expect Agassi's wife, Steffi Graf, and their two children Monday. There was no indication whether Agassi will be with them or come to Key Biscayne later.

The tournament begins Wednesday but because Agassi is a seeded player and draws a first-round bye, he would not have to play until Friday or Saturday. He was to have a second MRI Saturday

It really didn't look like it was affecting him at all against Roddick or Federer. I'm thinking he just needs another break, I think the Aussie Open took a lot out of him. Maybe I'm just being cynical

That's probably why he called for the doctor yesterday, during his match against Federer. He showed his foot but it didn't seem to be painfull. Or he's gifted when it comes to faking.

Get well soon Lleyton.

Interesting. I doubting you could be the one who could see if his foot seemed painfull or not from watching it on TV screen. Think about it.

Lleyton's great a playing with an injury and not showing what sort of pain he is in.

He had a painful injury at the AO too, and still played very well in getting to the final.

Whatever one thinks of him and his game, you have to admit that he has guts. He's the last person to fake.

I agree...it must have been noticeable because roger noticed right off, and Lleyton was willing to mention it, which often dosn't even. anyway, heal!! heal!! it is the year of the toe so far, lol. Not surprising, slamming into those hardhat showes to turn is awesome. A friend I play with uses some kind of silicone thing you can buy that fits over or under socks and absorbs shock. She told me about it when I had to stop one day because of a toe cramp.

So, Safin is gonna be seeded #3? That takes him out of Federer's way before the final. I hope that's a good sign for Roger.

Doesn't necessarily take Safin out of Federer's way. I thought #1 was placed at the top, #2 was placed at the bottom, and then #3 and 4 are drawn to see which one goes in the top half and which one goes in the bottom half?

hmmm, Agassi - nike shoes - toe injury. Hewitt - nike shoes - toe injury... Coincedence? (dun dun duuuuun).

Semi-final. They're in the same half. Roddick has his work cut out to get there, as well.

Oh come on. Don't tell me that when you have a painfull foot, you can run the way Lleyton has done allthrough the final? Btw, in case you hadn't understood what my 1st post meant, which is obviously the case, it was no criticism from me towards Lleyton.

I don't think so. Roddick is defending champion and Hewitt was defending nothing here, so I don't think Roddick can close the gap at this tournament. Someone else should know for sure though (rankings confuse me!).

No, because he won Miami last year and can't gain any points here. However, Hewitt's absence prevents him from pulling away any further (good news for someone else too).

Word out of Australia (via a friend of mine who lives in Adelaide) is that, as gsm reported earlier, Lleyton is having surgery to remove ingrown toenails and will be out for a "few weeks."

Plus, it's unlikely to happen. Andy's got too many points to defend at Miami. Lleyton should be back to normal fairly soon.

So does the fact that he has to undergo surgery and looks like being out for 6 weeks convince you his injury was legitimate? Shows me how much of a gutsy fighter he is ... playing on through pain as he did in the Aussie Open. Love or hate him, one has to admire his fighting qualities.

Get well soon Lleyton! :)

As well as his capacity to resist pain!

I'll tell it here once for all so please everybody take good note: my 1st post in this thread was no criticism towards Lleyton. It was a simple notice. I have nothing against him particularly so please, stop call me a hater, or at least do some effort to know me better before making any judgement!
