FUNNIEST but most pathetic thing EVER!

Okay that got your attention!

Anyway, can you believe it? Davenport beat Sharapova 6/0 6/0!!

Form me, this just proves my point that WTA is a joke. 2 top 3 players can contest a match of that level...it defies belief.

Fed isn't too far from achieving that..I admit, but ATP never gets scorelines week in week out that are 6/1 6/1 or 6/0 6/1 or 6/2 6/2 pretty much all the time.

Not sure mate - but that sure shocked me!!

I had her down as favourite to win relatively comfortably...glad i didn't bet on her in the end! I decided that i wouldn't bet on womens' tennis again after Kuz lost yesterday...this really does prove my point!!!!

Well no, I don't agree. I didn't watch that match but I'm pretty much sure Lindsay must have played amazingly GREAT and Sharapova was in day off or something like that.
Its not that you see 6-0 6-0 scorelines in women's tennis too often either, specially among top players. It wouldn't be so surprising if not.
The reason why in women's tennis the players can't hold serves that easily is because of the power of the serve. It's not the same returning a 130 kph serve than a 180/200 kph serve for either women or men. I don't see the William sisters losing their serve game too often or at least as often as the other women players on tour.
I think female tennis and male tennis are two completely different things. You might like one and hate the other or like both. I like both. And as a woman I feel affected by that comment ("wta is a joke").

That's all I had to say, specially the last thing :o

This is the best I have seen Linsey play in a long, long, long time. So excuses from Maria won't cut it for me. Linsey gave her a whipping, and I don't think I could have cheered any louder for Linsey.

Well I must say ESPN served up a double bagle for it's most marketed match of this tournament.............................

Well Maria said in the opening interview about lindsey, "It's nice to see her still playing tennis. I admire that"

Well, now, she truly has something to admire about Lindsey.

It was one of those days when Lindsay sees the ball big and executes everything with such power and precision that no one, except maybe Venus in her own heyday could make a dent. Yes, Maria became discouraged, and pouty, and looked close to tears, but who could blame her. She played worse and worse, and Lindsay better and better. Lindsay put it well, she didn't play well today, and I played vvv well.

If they don't hold serve easily, which is true...then they break serve more often....doesn't explain why so many matches are 6/1 6/1 etc.

I think female tennis and male tennis are two completely different things.

Hole in one!!! ;)

And as a woman I feel affected by that comment ("wta is a joke").

It is a joke...all the players beat each other 6/1 6/1 6/2 6/0 etc and if they don't, there is a match of 18 service breaks. Most of the matches are boring...obviously many ATP matches are too. I can't honestly and truthfully remember one good GS final from the last few years on the WTA tour...can you?

That's all I had to say, specially the last thing :o

It's the most shocking result I have ever seen. Something must have been wrong with Sharapova. She fights too hard to lose a match so bad

This could have some very serious effects, both on Sharapova's mental state as well as the way the other players will now view her.

I am trying to think you made a mistake quoting the last part of my post.

I feel affected about your comment because saying 'wta is a joke' is like saying 'women can't play tennis'. Excuse me but I call that discriminating.

And saying female and male tennis are different is not saying one of them is better than the other.

It is a joke...all the players beat each other 6/1 6/1 6/2 6/0 etc and if they don't, there is a match of 18 service breaks. Most of the matches are boring...obviously many ATP matches are too. And so what? I know WTA matches include a lot of service breaks but that doesn't make it less interesting IMO. It's not that they give them away with DFs, (lets not mention Elena here please.) they play the games and once again the speed and strength of the serve comes into play, because as I said before its not the same returning a 130 kph serve than a 200 kph.
But then again, it's alright if you don't like women tennis, I just think you should be a bit more respectful towards it because i'm sure many of the women there worked their asses off to get to where they are just like men did.

And no, I don't remember any good GS final from the last few years, but I do remember MANY great matches far more interesting that the 2004 USO final.

At least that "boring" final put on display beautiful tennis by Federer. Most blowouts on the WTA tour are usually the result of someone playing horribly. Come to think of it, most matches on the WTA tour are played horribly.

Most of the matches are a joke, often because one player plays well (fair does) and the other....doesn't. I have seen 2 matches out of several score this year that have been worth watching.

Yep - I never said that service breaks make the match less interesting...however, it is a little upsetting to see that the only way a set gets close is to see 8 service breaks...but I know that doesn't happen in more than 70% of matches.

If you want to talk about "facing speed" - when Hewitt and Coria play each other, for example, are there many service breaks in each set? No. They aren't big servers but their games are such that they defend and attack well, and they can still hold serve 80% of the time, on average. I don't think your argument holds water here.

I haven't in a long time. I did catch the end of the Maria/Lindsay match to see Yuri's face--I think he was going to kill someone.

I never said it was boring, but it also put on display an awful performance by Hewitt.

NOt really. Not much LH could've done in that match when all of Fed's FH's and BH's were coming within a couple of inches of the baseline and sidelines. Some nervous errors early but that was because of who he was facing. But enough of that--that's all in the past now:)

they are 2 different areas....but i have have seen a few very good matches on thw wta this year

the ozzy qtr davenport v molik, both the semis, the final was good to a degree but lindsay had nothing in the tank and playing for her best friend in the doubles final meant more...i can accept that. the tokyo final dav v sharapova----lindsay faught like hell to get back into it when her coach wanted her to retire cos of the injury. the only mens match that springs to mind is safin bting federer. you either like wta or you dont, if you dont like it dont waste your time degrading it.

Agreed.

When I say "WTA is a joke" did I actually SAY that "women can't play tennis?" I DON'T RECALL THAT I DID.

Not exactly, but as far as I know WTA is played by women and saying WTA is a joke is pretty much saying women's tennis is a joke which, I'm sorry, but I find VERY offensive.

Most of the matches are a joke, often because one player plays well (fair does) and the other....doesn't. I have seen 2 matches out of several score this year that have been worth watching.

So when a player plays well and the other player doesn't the match immediately turns into a joke? I recall many ATP matches being like that but no one calling them a joke.

And that last statement might be true if you only watched 3 matches this year.

If you want to talk about "facing speed" - when Hewitt and Coria play each other, for example, are there many service breaks in each set? No. They aren't big servers but their games are such that they defend and attack well, and they can still hold serve 80% of the time, on average. I don't think your argument holds water here.

Sure, they're not big servers... among the ATP tour. But why don't you try serving at 170 kph?
Besides Coria has been serving at 180 kph lately and I don't know about Lleyton NOW because last time I watched him play was in the Australian Open and his serve was much stronger than before. So I'm sure that even if you compare these players to the WTA players their serve is more powerful than the average among WTA.

Anyway, I'm not gonna keep discussing this because you have your opinion and I have mine. I just think, as I said before, that you could have been not so rude with the 'wta is a joke' comment because I, as a woman, found it very offensive.

Excellent posting from Carito. This youngster has taken over this thread with her common sense and good points. :)

That embarrassing love and love loss for Maria Sharapova against Lindsay Davenport in Indian Wells will mean very little in her career when compared to all the good things she will do in tennis. Congrats to Davenport for playing so well. But I can't see this bad loss hurting Masha's career in any way. She brushed off that very diifficult loss to Serena Williams at the Australian open. And she will brush off this loss to.
