Santoro is well-known for having that game which many amateur players hate, but seems totally OKAY to pros. But my God...look at that....

Maybe Safin should have stayed longer in Spain:

Corretja 8 Santoro 1
Robredo 5 Santoro 0
A. Costa 4 Santoro 1
Ferrero 4 Santoro 1

that's no news

"He's the only person in this world who can beat me - no, I mean who beat me five times in a row without any problems. This is the only one who can drive me crazy on the court like he did already for two years.

"Being told I am having to play Santoro is like being told I am going to die."

"I want to say that I play against Fabrice in the Olympic Games. I went there with all the confidence of the world, and he drove me crazy one more time."

"I couldn't talk I was so disappointed because I hate to play against him, really (laughter). For me is like almost, "You going to die tomorrow. How you feel?" Same as they told me I have to play against Santoro . You will go out from the court without tennis, you will finish this match. You will not put one ball. You finish and you can't put one ball in or you play unbelievable. Normally is going I can't play tennis anymore against Santoro. I need two weeks to prepare. I need two weeks to practice to play the next match. Let's see. Let's see"

And when he beat him: :p
"Best day in my life. I was scared already before the match, and it's difficult to play like this. I play today like against a normal guy. I try to make what I have to do. I knew that sometimes in some moments I will have to rush a little bit, you know, to risk. I didn't look at him, what he was doing, because when you look at him, you forget how to play tennis, for sure. You know, you start to risk, you start to make some crazy things, dropshots. I'm satisfied that I didn't get scared, I didn't get paralyzed on the court."

It is so strange that someone like Fabrice can make Marat his biatch.

Actually it isn't. Fabrice slices and dices, and Safin just smacks the ball around the baseline. Santoro's style of play is perfect to keep on beating Safin because he'll frustrate the OAF in groundstroke rallies.

Safin is also a tall man, taller than all of the Spaniards, which is a major reason why he struggles on grass with the slices and low bounces. He is a hard, flat hitter and doesn't use the same kind of topspin that players like Federer and Ferrero do in order to generate short angles and drag Santoro out of court, thus exploiting his limited reach with two hands on both sides. Federer used some of the same slice and dice play very effectively against Safin last year, feeding him off-pace balls and goading him into errors on important points.

I don't find this surprising at all, I can just picture Safin melting down in each of those losses. I bet Safin would have had a similiar record against Brad G's annoying game as well.

The problem I have with both of their games is that's its kind of a pathetic way to win. Bringing your opponent's level down. I guess all is fair in war, but I'd prefer to see both players playing the highest level possible on court.

I would much rather beat Safin by outplaying him when he's hitting the ball crisp and in his zone, than by dinking and hitting him crap shots until he explodes (I'm referring more to Gilbert, who I think might have tried to make his opponent play bad on purpose, wheras Santoro seems like more of an artist on the court; Santoro's creativness I think just makes him tricky rather than him actually trying to make Safin play bad)

Either way, players like Santoro expose weakness in a players game, whether technical or mental. Notice Federer dispatched him like 1,1, and 1 at this years AO even though he's had trouble in the past (i.e. Federer has dealt with some of the mental issues he may have had in the past)

:haha: That is funny.

They should give Safin a talk show or something. He just cracks me up.

Fabrice Santoro: "After my my fourth or fifth victory against him,
whenever he saw me, he put his hands on his head and said "No, please, not him!". He teases me too: "So, Santoro, still got your slice?" or " Tell me, you've been on the tour for a long time. Don't you think it would be a good time to stop now?". He's a nice guy, and I find that our matches bring us closer."

I hold that Marat doesn't think it is a shame. as Santoro said, their matches bring them closer. and Marat is not good at leading in those statistic at all.

Plus, Fed didn't beat Safin 5 times in a row. It was 3 wins - 1 loss - 3 wins - 1 loss.
