Most beautiful/ugliest serve you've ever seen ?

Taking into account only aesthetic (efficiciency generally comes with it)...
I would rank the following:
1-Philipoussis: magnificent, fluid, natural
2-Rafter: awesome pace
3-Sampras: a missile, pure
4-Becker: a combination of force and uniqueness
5-McEnroe: so unique

In the ugly category (more difficult at pro level, easy at amateur !):
Schalken
Ivanisevic
Wessels
Moya
;)

You must be bored.

The most beautiful serve is Karsten Braasch, the rest are just artisitic impostors in comparison.

From what i've seen-prettiest is definetly Melzer
ugliest is Mirnyi, and i have a thing against how high Hrbaty tosses the ball, but it's not exactly ugly.

I might not remember correctly, but wasn't Braasch thwarted like a late Gothic madonna when serving? ;)

And there is nothing wrong with following superstars. I am guilty of the same sin ;), though not exclusively.

i saw Cyril Saulnier serve and he has a real powder puff of a serve.

I personally find Zabaletta's serve awkward, something about the toss or his body position, it is not attractive.

You remember incorrectly Braasch is what serving is about.

Off topic, do you know Horst Skoff and Alex Antonitsch?

Not personally ;) I remember Alex as a medium to good doubles player and Skoff as a talented underachiever, very "Austrian" in contrast to hard-working professional Thomas Muster. But I never had and still don't have an exaggerated sympathy for players of my own nationality.

Ok, I made a little editing of serves of different players present in Bercy TMS, I can tell you that compared to Safin or Canas, he's the most natural and clean serve, but I understand some people can find it ugly... ;)

He has modified slightly but that picture was taken after the first part of the action. He seems to lower his head so that it faces the floor and swing his left arm like a monkey

This is a bit off topic but I was just wondering if anyone else thinks that the way they show live matches on TV is anoying for watching serves.

They usually show a close-up of the player's face in the early stage of the serve, and then switch to the hole court view just before impact

Yeah I agree, when you want to see the whole motion it's boring. But for the average TV wacher, they don't care, they want to see if it's an ace or whatever, so it's normal TV do that way.
A great coverage in that regard is Wimby, they are at court level, very close to the players, and from time to time they show the entire motion, and even sometimes with ultra-slow motion. Tradition+technology=the biggest GS ;)

Federer has one of the most effective serves, maybe not as powerful as some, but he looks so relaxed in his motion, then suddenly he'll smash an ace. Feds knows how to serve in gears better than anyone in the game right now. He always knows what serves to hit at key points in a match. I just love it the way he comes up with a couple aces in a row when he's behind...and I also I love the way he will often take a little pace off and add more spin on his first serve after he's just hit a double. I get the impression that Rogi tries to hit around his opponent rather than hit through them. He knows how to exploit his opponents weaknesses starting from the first ball. Its amazing!

I agree, his posture looks as though he is constipated.
I love Federer, and Safins body flow during the serve. Federer makes it looks so easy (whats new) and I love the fact he gives his opponents his back making it harder to figure out where he is placing his serve.
