i love Andre all but he is being given a tad too much credit IMO. yes there were more than a few amazing shots -- and the crowd oooh'd and aaah'd obediently -- but that's bec Andre had the time to line them up.

Andre will always look superb on hardcourts against a player like Coria -- a baseliner who plays a slower type of tennis full of topspin and not toooooo much power. the same Andre ends up looking quite ordinary against a Federer who can flatten out his shots (on any surface) and hit with serious pace. against Rogi, 'Dre doesn't have the time to set up those "amazing" shots.

having said that, it's good to see that Coria is back. he looked good, he stayed positive, he's obviously fitter -- and he will be a force to reckon with come the dirt season. ;)

To Coria's credit I think Andre played one of the best matches I've seen him play in a long time. :) The match was closer than the score suggests, there were many close games where both players were coming up with brilliant shots to stay in the points. A very good effort from Guillie! :worship:

I agree with TC- Coria's 3/4 pace shots gave Andre the time to set up for his shots and being able to take the ball so early really maneuvered him around. It was pretty close in the first set mind you.

But it was still a great match to watch in terms of quality and one that I enjoyed watching thoroughly. Can't wait for Hewitt-Agassi!!!!!

Agassi should dge the next match I think. Hewitt hasn't played any special players - Ginepri, Llodra and Mathieu. All 3 have been in slumps of form and are lacking confidence....maybe PHM is not quite as bad but he was exhausted from his previous match.

Agassi survived a encounters with Arthurs, Pavel and Coria. These are way tougher players than Lleyton. Plus, Agassi has won their last 2 meetings.

I agree . . . the first set was quite compelling actually and both of them really rose to the occasion. It's fun to watch them play because they really seem to enjoy it and they they like each other. There's a mutual respect there. Oh well, here's hoping for Miami.

As GWH said the serves and also Pete would employ rushing tactics and don't forget his FH was very powerful. He would keep Andre on the defensive and not let him dictate and that is an area which is a weakness for Andre. The moment he cannot dictate and run his opponent side to side he has a tendency to try to bash his way out of trouble resulting in errors and loss of confidence.

Bingo.

Anyone who thinks Andre is the favorite against Hewitt, Roddick, Safin, let alone Federer at this point.....doesn't know much about Agassi OR tennis for that matter.

Which is not to say he CAN'T beat them - but that he'd have to play out of his mind for that to happen, especially Roger. Move better. React quicker. More power on the strokes. Very accurate serve.

If Andre had a better serve back then, better fitness and didn't spend so much time away from tennis, things would have been more even between the two.

But as things stand, Pete is the chamption-genius and Andre is not. Andre's dad and mom should have gotten together 5-7 years earlier :)

03-17-2005, 03:14 PM
Okay, I'm a bit torn between those two guys, I can enjoy them winning both, but on hardcourt, I'm normally leaning a bit more towards Agassi as this is more his business and we all don't know for how long Andre will be around, so every win, let alone reaching the QF of a Masters is a good success for him! :yeah:

As for Coria, IMO even on hardcourt he is far better than the 1-6 in the 2nd set seemed to be representative of, but it seems as if Agassi played a very good match and Coria has nothing to be ashamed of if you ask me. I wish him all the best for the upcoming clay season, it could be another big one for him if he stays out of injury troubles :)

At least Pete did alright on the clay when there were proper claycourt players unlike that horrible era between 89-93.

One thing RonE pointed out which is very true and I have seen this many times Agassi is a shit defensive player when his normal game is not working. Sure he won RG, he was good enough to take advantage of the circumstances a back problem with Moya and a rain delay in the final.

Only a hand full of players are very good at offense and defense. Andre's game is designed to control points from the baseline, when that doesn't happen he has to play a "B" game. It's hard to beat the top people with that.

You're Norwegian, which is just a slightly exaggerated version of metrosexual.

Anyway, what's with all the Agassi hating? One of the greatest returners of all time, the guy who passed people at will in his (admittedly short) prime....has always had a "shit defensive game" according to you?

He might be 35, he may be playing hurt, he might not like clay....but if he were to play FO this year, he'd still reach 2nd week of play, barring an early encounter with Coria or something. Last year was an aberration.

That's too bad. "I'll beeeeee there......"

Do you really want to know the reasons why I don't like Agassi? I'll answer it later when I can construct what I need to say more coherently.

You don't like him because

1) He is a good-looking American
2) he was always a conceited jerk who disrespected the game with his lousy work ethic in his physical prime. He is still an impetuous child beneath all that Zen Master facade, but at least he is no longer mean-spirited. Kudos to him for growing up, even if his Inner Choker will always shine through against Federer just as it did against Sampras back in the day.

In a recent interview Agassi admits he doesn't think he is a great player, so neither should others. I wholeheartedly agree - he is NO chamption like Borg, Sampras or Federer. Just a very solid competitor who can still display good tennis on a rare occasion, despite his ancient age and chronic back/hip problem.
