I don't think Marat oafed. He was playing poorly. He couldn't play through it to get a win. Taylor played a fabulous serve and volley match. He was moving well, sticking his volleys, and getting enough serves in play to make it happen. The weight loss really paid off and Taylor looked great! Congratulations, Taylor! :D

I'm proud of Marat. He doesn't usually do well in these tournaments. He did his best and took his loss without giving up. He's my guy. So,

GO MARAT!! :D :D

Dent volleyed really well today and won 100% of the points from his first serve in the second set. Safin, on the other hand, didn't serve well at all and made too many UEs. He should really have more friendly practice sessions with serve and volley players.

I don't think Marat has a problem to deal with serve-volleyer. His loss is due to his poor play: incredibly horrible serve, forehand and volley :o . Dent played ok but not exceptionally well. It's Marat who lost it but he has never done well in this tournament :o .

In fact I didn't expect him to win at all and I don't think he will do well before RG  .

As always, mental toughness was lacking in this match though he did not tank it.

His volleys got better later in the first and in the second when he kept having to save BPs. But, you're right. He missed a couple of very easy ones. Unfortunately, he was just off tonight. It happens.

Definitely off tonite. And though not a tank (not an official OAFing as we fans have come to know it), I certainly don't like Marat's continued inability to play well at certain important tournaments. He also has issues with pre-RG clay, Wimbledon, indoors except Paris. Hopefully the New and Improved Marat of 2005 should be on-form for most of these tournies, not just his faves.

Great win of Dent, playing this way he can challenge anyone. Wasn't Safin day, but you can't play well in 100% of your matches. If he don't repeat last year and do well in Miami, that's perfectly ok.

nkhera1
03-16-2005, 06:26 AM
Taylor Dent should have beaten Marat by more than he did. He only got in about 45% of his serves but he won 95%+ of them. Marat is not a player to bet for or against becuase you never know what you are going to get.

NYCtennisfan
03-16-2005, 06:30 AM
Dent really dominated. He won 20 more points overall and only lost one point when he got his first serve in. Safin only won 57% of the points on his first serve. That's just plain wrong for a guy with Safin's serve on a fast hard court. Dent only got 45% of his first serves in. That's not very good, but Safin could not do anything on the second serve. Nice to see Dent with another big win.

But I'm freakin' thrilled for Taylor Dent. He's been my favorite American player for years, and I'm glad he can pull off these kinds of upsets (Ferrero, Hewitt, Safin, etc.). Just wish he could do it more consistently!

Marat blew a lot of chances in this match. At 5 all in the first, he had Dent 0-40, three break points, and lost the game followed by the set. Safin managed to fight back on his service games early in the second, but it was just way to many unforced errors from Marat. Dent actually outplayed Marat from the baseline, and Safin just blew way too many easy balls. Safe to say this wasn't one of Marat's better matches.

Still, this was the best all around performance I've seen from Dent (staying solid througout the course of a full match), as he was very solid from the ground, played intelligently, and moved pretty well. He looked very confident and had no nervous misses under pressure in the first or second sets. Still, I've only seen him a handful of times. Is this the biggest win of his career?

That's what every slam winner says to himself everytime he loses. Like a TV producer who wants to be succesful with his TV show: "I know I can do it, I know I can do it, I know I can do it, right?"

Just ask ToJo, Costa or Gaudio and Coria (he's still  ).

And a title is a title. So many players who never win at least one. And if it's a Masters, Slam or International Series, hey! A title is a title. Ask Wayne Arthurs.

Safin was # 1 when Santoro was beating up on him.

It doesn't matter what would Hewitt want 4 Slams or 3 Indian Wells titles? It wouldn't be the second one. Safin is one of the elite players and that's what counts the most, it's not like IW is a career breaker.

The thing is Dent was too good and deserved to win.

Agree.

IMO, it isn't a career breaker.

A title is a title, you have to remember that.

And players don't go out on court thinking, you know, this is Barcelona or MonteCarlo, I'll lose.....

That whole, oh "this title doesn't matter anyways" comes after you lose.

Roddick would love his Toronto and Cincinnati titles back. Especially after Johansson beat him in Flushing Meadows.

And Madrid or Paris in 2004 are important too, you know.

I think like he said, he just did not feel comfortable enough. He really did try his best to try and fight his way back into the match. He just did not look the same as he did previously. On the other hand Taylor played well. I think that if Safin had gotten his first serve in more times and gotten more comfortable, he would have won the match. He broke his racket when he was down three break points, but he was able to pull it together to win that game. Lets hope that the feels better next week.

He will be fine though I want to see him do much better in tournaments like this one. Lets hope that he can pull himself together and make a good run in Miami next week.

Marat Mikhailovich Safin is my second all time favorite men's tennis player behind Stefan Jon Edberg. :) But Marat will never be the great player Edberg was because he has too mnay ups and downs and too many bad results. :( And while Safin is a very good tennis player he will never be the all time great men's tennis player I thought he would be when he won the U.S. Open at age 20 and showed so much promise to possibly become an all time great player someday. But I realistically hope Safin wins atleast a couple more grand slam singles titles in his career and gets inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame when his career is over. :)

As for Safin's loss to Taylor Dent last night his serve was a non factor in the match and let him down in big spots. If Marat has a good serving day he can beat anyone. But if he has a poor serving day he can be beaten by any good tennis player.

Carolinita, this is rubbish. The "player X didn't win this match, player Y lost it" is the most lame excuse ever. It's not Dent's trouble to ascertain that Marat brings his A game to the court. I'm heartbroken over this loss, but the match had only one winner and that was Dent. He won fair and square.

Both these statements can exist side-by-side. There is no doubt that Marat totally lost it in the match, and again, the same statement would have probably been true against any other player...

"I lost the match" people fail to see the other player played better.

"I won the match" people fail to see the other player was not playing well.

However, this is not the case.

Taylor Dent played better than a lot of people expected.

And that had an impact on Safin's game.

Other players would've lost to "I'm playing poorly" Safin.

Not Taylor Dent.

He won the match.

That was a fantastic exhibition of classic S/V tennis by Dent. The way he was blanketing the net, hitting gorgeous low backhand volleys and sweet drop volleys brought back memories of Cash and Edberg. I haven't enjoyed a match like that since Federer's virtuoso performances in 2003 Wimbledon SF and Final.

No one has beaten Marat until they beat him in a best of 5 match

Marat could probably lose to a 2 yr old in a best of 3 set match

he's an OAF and always will be an OAF
but in best of 5, it gives him time to OAF about and still win :o
:worship: :worship:

and you know Dent has already run of steam. he himself admitted in the post-match interview that he plays well one day and plays like crap the next.

:worship: Well said. Dent outplayed Marat. Simple as that.

Don't worry Marat fans. Your guy will probably go on to win the French Open. :)

Dent really stopped his pizza-oriented diet...

May be he switched to vegetarian pizza

Marat played poorly but Dent's play was above his normal performance. Dent covered the net really well and didn't give Marat room for passing.

Marat played with no confidence at all. Both his backhand and forehand were very tentatively, IMO.

Yep, if Dent had won the whole tournament, I wouldn't feel so bad about Marat's loss. If he was gonna have food poisoning, he could have had it one day earlier. ;) At least, there would have been a complete match.

I'm not agree with you. When Marat lost against Fed in SF (TMC), Fed was superior to Marat....Marat played really good, but this not reach to win... and when this happen, I'm calm. But now, I feel he retired to the match before finishing the first set and when this happen, I can't to say that the other player won completely "fair and square". Today, we had another example: Agassi v/s Coria....Coria tried and tried and tried...he played really good, but Agassi won 'cuz he still played much better...So, I feel that more that to lose Coria, which won was Agassi....."The "player X didn't win this match, player Y lost it" exist for me, though you don't like it. :speakles:

Again, it's not the other player's fault that his opponent fails to bring his best game to the court. Dent was beating the player who was on the other side on the net, not some ideal projection which exists somewhere on the old tapes. On that day Marat wasn't good enough to win that match. Dent played better, end of story. Besides , Marat admitted himself that he didn't give up - he just couldn't play well enough to beat Taylor - whos fault was that? But continue with the excuses if it makes you feel better.
